President’s Message:
Our Awards and Scholarship Dinner was aimed at promoting the engineering profession
and recognizing outstanding professional engineers and engineering students. This was
the first year where we combined the Scholarships and Awards events, and it was a total
success. It was an honor to recognize the following individuals:
Outstanding Technical Achievement
David Stewart, P.E.
Outstanding Service to the Profession
Blake Guillory, P.E.
Engineer of the Year
Denise Palmatier, P.E.
Government Engineer of the Year
Tony Miller, P.E.
FES Mission Statement:
FES supports engineering
education, advocates
licensure, promotes the
ethical and competent
practice of engineering,
and enhances the image
and well-being of all
engineers in the state of
Florida; and furthers the
public’s knowledge and
understanding of the
importance of the
profession.
Congratulations!
We also awarded $1,000 scholarships to four high school students and six college
students, for a total of $10,000. This was possible thanks to our Scholarship Sponsors,
your participation in the golf tournament, and the Richard A. Rogers Scholarship
Foundation.
Our guest speaker, Ramon Castella, P.E., one of the original founders of C3TS and now
with Stantec, gave a great presentation on upcoming development opportunities in Cuba.
We thank him for his presentation.
I hope to see you all at our Annual Conference in Ponte Vedra Beach in August. Enjoy
your summer with family and friends!
Sincerely,
Arnoldo Artiles, P.E.

Each year our chapter partners with the South Florida
Science Center to provide a fun engineering design event for
K-12 students in Palm Beach County. This year we
celebrated the 30th anniversary of the competition on April
16, 2016 with a record breaking attendance of 376 students.
The following engineers and Palm Beach State College FES
members helped make the day possible assisting with the
planning of the event and judging. We thank you for the
225+ hours you collectively contributed to encourage
students to pursue engineering.

Are you smarter than a MATHCOUNTS mathlete?

As Kyle walked along a street at a constant speed, he noticed that every 12 minutes, a bus passed him traveling in the
same direction, and every 4 minutes, a bus passed him traveling in the opposite direction as Kyle. If all of the buses
travel at a constant speed and leave the terminals at each end of the street at equally spaced intervals, how many
minutes long is that interval?
Z
Answer from April. Full explanation online http://mathcounts.org/resources/problem-archive
Since 1 pound is included in the initial $20.00, Cornelius’ mom will be charged the $2.00 per 4-ounce overage rate
for 3.75 pounds – 1 pound = 2.75 pounds. The 2.75 pounds is equivalent to 2.75 pounds × 16 ounces/pound = 44
ounces and will result in 44 ounces × $2.00/4 ounces = $22.00 in overage charges. Thus, the total cost to ship the
package via Speedy Delivery’s two-day service will be $20.00 + $22.00 = $42.00..
