Riviera has been judged a five-star Platinum Club since 1999. Ring in the New Year as we celebrate the Diamond anniversary of Riviera Country Club. This year’s event will surely dazzle as we convert the Club into a white and silver lounge and dance club. The party kicks off with a fabulous cocktail hour including a martini luge and Chef Mark’s delicious and creative hors d’oeuvres. Then, we’ll migrate to the Ballroom for a luscious dinner and dancing. The band will play continuously through the evening and even after we “drop the ball” to keep the festivities going. After party? You bet! The Salon will serve as a late night lounge serving up specialty drinks, coffee and delicious sweets. This year the price is only $145.00 per person, the best deal in town, so make your reservations early! On February 9th “A NIGHT AT THE OLD TROPICANA” returns to Riviera. If you have never experienced old Havana’s famous night club, you can visit it for the first time. For just $75.00 per person, you’ll dine on traditional Cuban “comida”, move to live salsa music, and be wowed by dancers decked out in Tropicana garb. To be sure to look your best on the dance floor, Riviera will offer a series of salsa dance classes in January ending right before the party to get you ready to salsa the night away. Come and enjoy the flavor of Old Havana. But, there’s more fun in store. March 16th Riviera will introduce it’s first ever CASINO AND MARTINI NIGHT. Step through the front doors of the club and enter Coral Gables’ own casino. From 7-8 PM, sip on sultry, signature martinis, nibble on the finest hors d’oeuvres and relax to live music from the University of Miami Jazz band. When the doors to the Casino open at 8 PM, bountiful dinner and dessert buffets and flowing bars will keep you going as you play blackjack, roulette and craps throughout the evening. The three top winners will win great prizes including elegant dinners and tickets to Riviera events. Dinner, casino and drinks are all included for $85.00 per person. In the spring we will have our first ever CROQUET TOURNAMENT. We will set up 10 croquet courts which will accommodate 80 players at a time for games of 20-25 minutes in length. No experience is needed, anyone can play and it’s fun. There will be instructors available to help you. While you are waiting your turn at croquet, you can wander about in your white attire sipping on cocktails and munching on outstanding hors d’oeuvres. This event will take place in the late afternoon during daylight savings time. Sounds like fun? We hope so. Come solo and sit at a club table, bring friends, or put together a table for these and other fine evenings of entertainment and dining at your Riviera Country Club. Your Entertainment Committee: Mary and Steve Lynch, Committee Chairs, Ann and Neil Chrystal, Blanchie and Al Cueto, Meg and John Daly, Jessica and Julio de Arcos, Vicky and Bert Hucks, Anne and John Knowles, Samantha and John Murphy, Lola and Allen Pegg, Loli and Tom Rainey, and Michael Wilson. Cristina’s Corner By Lee Ann Palomo By Cristina Aguirre The holidays are fast approaching and we have a full schedule. There are several dates to mark on your calendars, so you don’t miss a thing: • December 5th RWGA Guest Day There will be a lovely lunch following golf. Be sure to invite your friends to play. • December 12 Join us for a Four-person Shamble This will be a new format. Then begin your holiday celebrations at the Holiday Luncheon • Also note there will be no RWGA play on December 26. Be sure to set up your own tee times, because you will need to practice for the Triple Tournament coming up in January. • January 16, 18 and 19 will be our Triple Tournament We have had some fun this fall with events like the Two Person Scramble, won by Lina Gamble and Tamara Eggen. our even holes only had four winners: Lee Ann Palomo in 0-23, Liz Wilson and Joyce Stevens in 24-28, and Tamara Eggen in 29-up. But who could forget our winners of the Orange and Black Halloween Tournament? If we had voted for the best costume, it surely would have been the four witches (see photo below). The first place golfers, however, were Tamara Eggen, Patti Otero, Denise Campbell, and Liz Gallagher. Please enjoy some of the photos from the course and from our Fall Luncheon (below). Stay tuned to learn who will win our Fall Tournament. Only a few more weeks until the holidays arrive, and that means less time for shopping! No need to fret, because your Riviera Pro Shop has everything you need to fill stockings and put under trees. With last-minute items and merchandise coming in, you will surely find what you are looking for here at the Riviera. Women’s 1. Lilly Pulitzer adds more to her resort collection with a beautiful embellished tunic and a fun peasant skirt. 2. Lilly P. for kids also comes in with some holiday outfits and great swimwear. 3. I hope many of you have had the opportunity to play and enjoy the course since your return. We have finished our heavy summer maintenance program on the course and we are now seeing the great results it has produced. The greens have started to perform with speeds of 10 on the Stimpmeter, while still looking healthy and green. For the Riviera Classic MemberMember Tournament, the speeds reached 11 and rolled very consistently. In order to keep the speeds at 10, we will be lightly topdressing the greens every two weeks, throughout the season. This will be done on Mondays and will not produce any play disruptions. We have installed a test piece of a new product we are considering for the driving range mats. This test material is a third-generation product. It has a very different makeup, as compared to the current material on the tee. It does not require the sand topdressing and rubber material that had to be brushed in weekly. It allows you to hit through the ball without being worried about hitting the hard sand below. The 4 x 5 test area is located at the far left side of the existing range tee mat. Please find this area and hit a few balls. If we have a great response to this new product, we will replace the old material with it. The strips would be gone and this would go on the entire existing tee surface. I would like to introduce the newest member of the golf course maintenance operations team. His name is P.J. Salter, who will be an assistant golf course superintendent and help me with the daily operations of the course maintenance. P.J. is from Novi, Michigan, and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Golf Course Management. His most recent positions were at The Golf Club of the Everglades in Naples, and he interned at the historic Orchard Lake Country Club in Detroit, Michigan. Please give him a warm welcome and say hello to him if you see him on the course. In closing, I would like to thank everyone who attended the Turfgrass Management Symposium. I hope it was very helpful and you learned something about where you play everyday. Let’s have a great season. The golf course will be closed on Christmas Day The Golf Pro Shop closes early (4:00 P.M.) on Christmas Eve. Holiday starting times begin at 7:30 A.M. Please remember, guest restrictions apply to both weekends and holidays. Christmas Eve Pro Shop Hours: 7:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M. Christmas Eve Bag Room Hours: 7:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M. August Swarat “Makes the Turn” to South Carolina After six years of dedication to golf instruction at Riviera Country Club, August Swarat has announced that he and his family have decided to relocate to coastal South Carolina, during the winter season. He will be teaching at Reserve Golf Club in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. Everyone who knows August will receive this announcement with a mixture of sadness and gratitude. August is a true gentleman. As a professional, his leadership, commitment, and skills were appreciated by every Member who was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to benefit from his instruction. In his letter, August thanked the staff. “I can assure the Members that this staff works extremely hard to make their day more enjoyable. I will miss the staff very much, especially Chris Napieralski and his Golf Shop staff.” He also expressed appreciation to our Members. “To the membership of Riviera, I thank you for all your support. It truly was a pleasure going to work each and every day. I thank you all for allowing me to do what I loved to do at Riviera. I will miss you all so much.” August made significant contributions to golf instruction at Riviera, and had an extremely positive impact on those who learned from him. Our golfers have spoken in glowing terms about their improvement under his tutelage. His involvement at Riviera, however, transcended his teaching ability. August is the embodiment of everything that is great about the game of golf and he demonstrated that by his manner, respect for the game, and professionalism each and every day. He will be missed. We certainly hope that he will visit often and we wish him well in South Carolina. After School Tennis Junior Clinic Golf & Tennis Holiday Junior Clinic Pee Wee Monday-Thursday 3:15-3:45 P.M. Athletic Director For most folks, stretching is an afterthought. Or, for many people, it is the final segment at the end of a workout that gets dropped when you are in a hurry. But stretching is not just important for elite athletes or marathon runners. It is a valuable part of nearly every workout routine. Stretching helps reduce the risk of injury, while increasing your body’s flexibility. This allows for a greater range of motion in your joints. It can also increase your coordination and ability to handle everyday tasks (like carrying groceries or chasing your kids on the playground). Moreover, for many people, stretching helps relieve stress. In some cases, it can lessen the amount of muscle soreness you may experience after a vigorous workout. There are two main types of stretching: ballistic and static. Ballistic stretches use momentum – like bouncing to try and force to stretch. Static stretches, on the other hand, are traditional “stretch and hold” positions. While ballistic stretching has its place, most experts agree that ballistic stretches are more likely to lead to injury (because they are more difficult to control). Thus, static stretches are the best recommendation for most exercisers. When is the best time to stretch? Stretching when your muscles are warm and more pliable is recommended. If you want to stretch at the beginning of your workout, it is a good idea to warm up with cardio for 4-8 minutes prior to stretching. Stretching cold muscles can lead to injury, such as strained or torn muscles. Alternatively, you can stretch after you have completed your workout when your muscles are most warm. Yoga is another alternative to a full-body stretching workout, since many of the poses help stretch the muscles while increasing flexibility. If you are interested in learning new stretches, please ask our Fitness Instructors and/or Personal Trainers to demonstrate and teach you an overall body stretch routine.
