Visiting Hamilton is like taking a step back in time, as the
town is full of history. Many pre-Civil War houses remain
to be seen on the historic walking tour, as well as sites
like Fort Branch, and the Rosenwald River Center. In
addition, you can put a boat in the Roanoke River here,
or enjoy fishing from the public dock.

Hamilton was incorporated in 1804 and with its location on
the Roanoke River, the town long prospered as a bustling
commercial port. After the Civil War, tobacco and peanuts
replaced cotton as the area's major commodity, but
passengers, produce and merchandise continued to be
unloaded at Hamilton's port. The current population of
Hamilton is about 516 people.

Though the congregation of the Bear Grass Primitive Church organized
CR
in 1828, the town was not officially incorporated until 1909. Bear Grass
was once known as the "Moonshine Capital of the World" and gained
it's fame during our country's history of prohibition. The current
population of Bear Grass is less than 100 people.

seat of Martin County. The town's population is about
5,511 people. There was a village in the general locality
as early as 1730. The settlement prospered and was

Jamesville is a great town to visit, boasting the only
riverfront restaurants in Martin County. Visitors can also
tour many historic sites, such as the pre-Civil War
Burra's house and the old Astoria Saw Mill. In addition,
you can put a boat in the Roanoke River, or just relax and
enjoy fishing from the public dock. Fishing has historically
been an important industry for the town, and Jamesville
hosts the NC Herring Festival annually.

Robersonville was incorporated in 1870, becoming the
first town in Martin County dependent on a railroad
rather than the Roanoke River. Robersonville grew
slowly in the first decade, but grew more expansively
as it became the county's first tobacco market around
1900. Though the railroad has since been replaced
with a highway bypass, Robersonville continues to
thrive. The current population is about 1,488 people.
