Although the sale is at the end of June, the planning begins in March when the dates are posted and requests for donations and volunteers are made. The really serious work begins the weekend before the garage sale as items are being brought to the gym and every item is sorted and priced. Joan Powers, Al Frascatore, and other dedicated volunteers work tirelessly on this. The donations are not only from Holy Cross, but the whole Charlotte area and 8 surrounding churches. Jane Lavery, an antiques assessor, looks over each donation to determine which items are more valuable and need to be priced higher. Randy Briffa takes items to a flea market or sells them on ebay if he thinks he can get more money there. During Sunday’s clean up, those things remaining that the VOA, Salvation Army, and Vietnam Veterans accept, get dropped off to each on Monday. Saint Pauly takes all of our leftover clothing. Darlene says that they see as many as 200 people over 3 days. People in the High Rise Apartments always look forward to this sale as it helps them furnish their apartments. She says that although a lot of work is involved, all have a good time seeing everyone and working with our wonderful volunteers. There are hot dogs, snacks, pop, and picnic tables available. It is a fun and festive event, and “we are helping our Holy Cross Parish!” All of this happens thanks to the cooperation and hard work of volunteers like Darlene and Jack.
