MESSAGE FROM THE
PRESIDENT
FIMA Council meeting is the
most important landmark and well
attended activity in the working of
FIMA (Federation of Islamic
Medical Associations), which is
held annually and is a great source
of reinforcing its working and
activities, exchange of ideas and
execution of plans of the
organization. The delegates from
IMA’s all around the world gather
on an invitation from a local host
and two days are allocated for the
FIMA council meeting followed
by a scientific session and later
sightseeing. The 33rd FIMA

PIMA HOLDS A HISTORIC CONVENTION IN PESHAWAR - PAKISTAN
The 24th central biennial convention of Pakistan Islamic Medical
Association was held at Peshawar Medical College on 2-3 April 2016.
PIMA convention is one of the largest medical gathering in Pakistan. More
than 2000 delegates from all over the country and abroad attended its
various sessions. In the concluding session Dr Abdul Malik, Cardiac
Surgeon from Peshawar was elected as central President of PIMA for the
session 2016-18. He did his graduation from Khyber Medical College
(KMC) in 1994 and FCPS in Cardiac Surgery in 2002. At present, he is
Associate Professor of Department of Cardiovascular surgery in Lady
Reading Hospital Peshawar. He joined PIMA in 1994 and served on
different responsibilities like President of local unit, then Peshawar city
and then PIMA President KPK Province in 2011. The salient feature of this
convention was its very well organized scientific session with more than
40 national and international speakers updating the recent advances in

"Polio Eradication: A Public
Health Challenge" was presided
over by Mr. Iqbal Zadar Jhagra
(Governor KPK). The guests of
honors were Shahram Khan
Tarakai (Health Minister KPK),
Prof Shoaib Shafi (CPSP).Prof
Musa Nordin (Malaysia), Dr
Mufti Zubair Wadood (WHO), Dr
Ta n v e e r u l H a s s a n Z u b a i r i
(President FIMA) and Mufti
Ghulam ur Rehman. The speakers
addressed on "Poliomyelitis: The
End Game", "Current Situation of
Polio", "FIMA, PIMA and PMC
initiatives in preventive health"
and "Health and Polio
Vaccination" respectively.

we are making progress in
eradicating the virus of the
crippling disease adding that all
out efforts are being made for
complete eradication of polio from
the country to make Pakistan a
polio free state to save the future of
next generations.

CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR GREEN CRESCENTS HELD IN ISTANBUL
International Federation of Green
Crescents held its capacity
building training workshop in
Istanbul last month. Thirty
countries are the member of this
umbrella organization.
Green crescent society has a
history of ninety years of fighting
the menace of addiction. It has
grown with unparalleled
dimension during the last decade
and now its activities can be
witnessed in the international
arena, as Green Crescent has
reached the status of a global civil
society. The Green Crescent and
the International Federation of
Green Crescent organizations
signed a declaration in Istanbul on
April 8, 2016 with the
participation of 30 countries.
Federation's founding meeting
was attended by delegates from
Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan,
Bangladesh, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Bulgaria, China
(Xinjiang), Indonesia, Ivory
Coast, Palestine, Georgia,
Montenegro, Kenya, Cyprus
(TRNC), Congo, Kosovo,
Lebanon, Malaysia, Mali, Niger,
Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal,
Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania,
Thailand, Uganda and was
attended by representatives of
countries from Yemen antiaddiction Society. Prof. Dr. M.
İhsan Karaman was elected as the
chairman of Federation by the
General Assembly.
Prof. Dr. M. Ihsan Karaman, in his
speech at the press conference
reiterated the objective of Green
crescent movement in fighting and
prevention of all kinds of
addiction and dependence,
moreover he emphasized the
importance of rehabilitation as it
would play an important role in
achieving the ultimate target.
Professor Karaman said, "Each
year, 6 million people smoke
worldwide, 3.3 million people die of
alcohol-induced illnesses. The
number of deaths from the drug use
is around 200,000 per annum. In
each of our member states various
problems exists in the field of
addiction. He pledged that the
federation will leave no stone
unturned to fight against addiction
of any kind. He was of the view that
scientific studies shall be conducted
and evidence-based prevention
methods, using rehabilitation,
advocacy and coordination be
adopted.
Green Crescent is working closely
with the United Nations, European
Union, Council of Europe, the
World Health Organization, the
Organization of Islamic
Cooperation (OIC) and Federation
of Islamic Medical Associations
(FIMA).
SYRIA RELIEF...... ROLE OF EGYPTIAN IMA
Dr Omar all Ayat the former
member of FIMA ExCo along
with his family went to Hatay and
then to a farthest point inside
Aleppo and took with them huge
supplies of food items, clothing
and drugs.

ASEAN FIMA MEETING
A regional meeting of FIMA
members from Indonesia (IMANI)
& Bangsamoro Medical Societies,
Mindanao (Philippines) and
IMAM was held recently in Johor
Bahu, Malaysia.
IMAM is part of a larger
Federation of Islamic Medical
Association (FIMA). The issues
relating to the region were
discussed and it was re-affirmed
that such meetings shall be held
periodically preferably in
conjunction with the annual
meetings of individual IMAs. Dr.
Rashid, General Secretary of
FIMA was hopeful that it will
positively contribute towards a
better medical fraternity that
benefits the Ummah.
ISLAMIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA (IMASA)
HOLDS ANNUAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY IN LENASIA
Our “Free Medical Screening &
Health Awareness Day” was
offered to the community of
Lenasia on Sunday - 10th April
2016 with a total of 547 screened.
Screening offered: Weight, Height
& BMI, Peak expiratory flow
screening, Blood Pressure Testing,
Glucose Testing & Cholesterol
Testing and Eye screening. In
addition to this, various specialists
offered their expertise by
consulting with patients who made
appointments during their times of
availability Eg: Occupational
Therapists, Physiotherapists,
Dermatologists, Podiatrists,
Dentists, a Cardiologist & Heart
Rhythm Screening. MAP
conducted HIV / AIDS Testing /
Counselling & TB Screening. We
have also included the IMA CPR
Team facilitating the “Hands
Only” CPR training sessions and
demos.
Each year the participation of
medical students [MSA] is
growing and this year around 30
students attended the camp
Alhumdulillah, their eagerness
and dedication to volunteer the
whole day was truly admirable.

to Syrian refugee camps in
Lebanon. We need funds to

disposables and equipments for

DR. KEREM KıNıK ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF TURKISH RED CRESCENT
General Assembly of Turkish Red
Crescent was held in Ankara with
participation of delegates across
the country and distinguished
guests. Dr. Kerem Kınık was
selected the President with the
majority of votes.
The General Assembly, which was
held in ATO Congresium where
1,303 delegates from about 700
Turkish Red Crescent Branches
attended, had the expected
atmosphere of enthusiasm and
Red Crescent spirit. Kerem Kınık
was selected the new President of
Turkish Red Crescent at the
General Assembly whit
participation of President Recep
Tayyip Erdoğan as the guest of
honor, Prime Minister Ahmet
Davutoğlu, ministers, members of
parliament, bureaucrats, and
directors of non-governmental
organizations.
REMAINING MESSAGE OF THE PRESIDENT
being held in Abuja, Nigeria hosted by the Islamic
Medical Association of Nigeria. The idea to host
FIMA meeting in Nigeria was put forth in Cape
Town South Africa in 2013. The process of
Sensitization and mobilization of members was
started and it was finally approved in 32nd FIMA
council meeting held in Makassar, Indonesia in
2015. The Theme of the scientific conference has
been decided to be “Polio End game in Nigeria;
Challenges and lessons to other vaccine preventable
disease”. Following Sub-themes were also selected
to be presented and discussed in parallel sessions:
Management of victims of armed conflicts,
Provision of health care needs for refuges; Dilemma
of 21st century, Prophetic medicine; the role of
Muslim Health professionals. The conference work
amounts to tremendous input by its members and
organizers. The following subcommittees have
been formed for arrangements in the areas of
advocacy, publicity, fund raising, mobilization,
accommodation, transport and logistics, welfare,
venue and exhibition, security and sanitation, venue
and accommodation. The venue of the 33rd FIMA
council meeting and the 17th IMAN & FIMA
scientific conference will be at Nicon Luxury
Hotel in the heart of Abuja. The programme shall
be as follows. Pre council FIMA ExCo meeting
19th July.2016. FIMA council meeting 20-21st
July 2016. 22-23rd July are allocated for FIMAIMAN International scientific session. The
scientific committee has invited the FIMA
fraternity for abstracts. The deadline of
submission is 15th June 2016.
In addition to the FIMA council meeting and
scientific sessions there will be Students'
activities and Sightseeing tour of the city. All the
IMAs are requested to immediately start
preparing for this mega event. Visa arrangements
and boarding/lodging arrangements are being
actively arranged by the local hosts. Contact Dr.
