lives of the children we serve. The dreams and concepts of our founding
and past leaders are clear; it is our responsibility to ensure that we carry out the
Continental Mission and always keep it in the forefront of our lives.
Continental Societies, Inc. had a very eventful 2011 – 2012 calendar year. As I travel
around the country this past year to different events, it was evident that our regions
and chapters are on task, and conducting the business of the organization, in a
professional and businesslike manner.
The National Board and the Co-host Richmond Chapter are gearing up for the 56th
National Conclave being held June 20 through 24th. It is my desire that we have a
fantastic turn out for this event. Our corporate sponsor, Colgate Palmolive has great
plans for the members in attendance on Wednesday.
Chapters, I commend you for your dedication and the implementation of your HEER
plus Arts and Humanities programs and projects. I also would like to thank the past
national presidents of the Continental Societies, Incorporated for your mentoring and
guidance. You have made a difference to the improvement of this organization.
Last, Continental Sisters, you make me proud to be a Continental.
Very truly yours,

Chapter: Anne Arundel County Continental Submitting Data: May 31, 2012
New member news: The Anne Arundel County Chapter of the Continental Societies held an Induction ceremony
and dinner at the LaQuinta Inn and Suites in Glen Burnie, Md on Sunday, April 15, 2012. The five new members
who were inducted into the chapter are: Ronda Brown, Lynn Gilbert, Kaycie Lomax, Gale R. Stephens, and Valecia
Winston. We are excited about these five (5) magnificent ladies who bring an array of talents and experience to the
chapter, taking us closer to the mission and goals of the Continental Societies, Inc. We are proud that our work in
Anne Arundel County has influenced the decision of these ladies to be a part of our chapter. The new members are
preparing to submit a community service proposal as part of the Employment Initiative.
Chapter Happenings:
The chapter announces its 3rd Annual Crown and Pearls Tea. The Tea was recently held on
Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the John Wesley United Methodist Church, in Glen Burnie, MD.
The theme for this year’s fundraising event was “Celebrating the Lineage of Royalty from Princess to Queen.” Members
decorated their tables using their own theme and colorful décor. The ladies wore hats of many styles, sizes, and colors. A
few of the members invited their little ladies to witness this event. Our little princesses were included in the program
when Evelyn Mason and Danise Jones-Dorsey engaged them in a ceremony with spoken-word to lead the little ones (ages
3-11) through a journey from “Princess to Queen.”The ceremony was demonstrated using shoes of various sizes from
infancy to adult, relating shoes to growing up and accepting responsibilities as they grow (from princess) and mature to
adulthood(to queen). A parent’s role to help the princesses grow through each phase was emphasized. Proceeds from the
tea will support the chapter’s programs and activities for disadvantaged children and youth in Anne Arundel County.
The chapter presented scholarship awards to two graduating seniors at a Senior Awards Ceremony held at Meade High
School on May 24, 2012. The recipients are, Cameron Anthony Ramos (Fisk University), community activist and many
years as a servant to the children and youth in Anne Arundel County and LaVonne Tynes (Howard University), William
Reid Jazzman Award.
Other News: The chapter is moving forward with passion and commitment to hold their fall fundraiser “A
Taste of Jazz: Serving it up at Café Continental.” The event will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012
in Annapolis, MD. Through this event, the chapter will once again share an appreciation for music and Jazz
with all efforts to support Arts and Humanities. More importantly, this event will provide funds for the
William Reid Jazzman Award for young musicians in Anne Arundel County. Tickets will be available on
June 16.

OKLAHOMA CITY CHAPTER
2011 - 2012 OPERATION
NEW MEMBER NEWS
The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Chapter will host a tea this fall in an effort to recruit
prospective members. We will also revisit lost members to encourage them to return to
the Chapter. The Oklahoma City Chapter was chartered February 19, 2011.
CHAPTER HAPPENINGS
At the National Conclave June, 2011 held in Washington, D. C. the Oklahoma City
Chapter received a plaque in recognition of its H.E.E.R. National Childhood Obesity
Project submitted. This year we have been busy with our H.E.E.R. Programs. During
2011 - 2012 the Oklahoma City Chapter revisited its chapter goals and focused on
membership growth, implementing more quality programs for children with a focus on
health issues and establishing partnerships with other community organizations.
During the fall of this year, under the leadership of Continental Anita Jones, we focused
on health by continuing our preventive health education program "Getting Rid of Mr.
Dirt and Blocking Mr. Tooth Decay". The project is implemented in partnership with
Colgate-Palmolive Company and with the permission, support and facilitation of
Superintendent Dr. Gloria Griffin and Principal Michael Pryor of the Millwood School
District. We can not begin too early teaching children the importance of caring for their
teeth. With this as a focus we implemented a second health education program, "Rock
Your Smile". Under the leadership of Continental Brenda Jones and in partnership with
Colgate-Palmolive Company and the Salvation Station Child Care Center. Other
programs implemented at the Salvation Station Child Care Center included "Music Last a
Life Time" presented during Music Appreciation Month and "Reading Appreciation"
presented during Reading Appreciation Month. We also completed several projects with
our Community Action Center partners in Spencer, Oklahoma under the leadership of
Continental Mercedees LaCue assisted by Continental Eleanor Smith and Continental
Mildred Ward. The activities included a Back to School Bash and our annual Easter Egg
Hunt. School supplies and book bags were given to each child as well as baskets and
eggs. These projects allowed us to address the health and physical activity issues of
children. Other projects this year included Christmas Cards to Soldiers written by
children at Johnson Elementary School under the guidance of Continental Cynthia
Johnson. Continental Carmelita Brazille and Continental Husband Emmitt Brazille, took
students from Emerson High School on a job shadowing event in partnership with AT &
T and Junior Achievement.
Our Chapter is making an impact in our community.

SAINT LOUIS CHAPTER
Continental Societies Incorporated
Saint Louis Chapter
The Saint Louis Chapter was organized on June 19, 1981 by the late Dr.
Fredda Witherspoon, renown Saint Louis educator and community leader.
The chapter then and now is comprised of conscientious, concerned and
talented ladies representing a variety of professions and interest. The Saint
Louis Chapter has received national recognition in all components of the
Five Point Programmatic Thrust. Most notably, the HEER Award which is
the highest award bestowed upon a Chapter.
American poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "Nothing great was ever
accomplished without enthusiasm," The Saint Louis Chapter
enthusiastically pursued the Continental Societies National Initiatives for
the service year of 2011-2012 to include Literacy and Childhood Obesity,
Our Literacy Project was held at the Daruby Early Learning Center. It
consisted of reading the book, "Aunt Flossie's Hats and Crab Cakes Later,"
by Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard and illustrated by James Ransome. This
project emphasized reading is fun . Also, Continentals introduced the
students as well as some of the teachers to dressing -up and wearing hats.
Continentals dressed in our Sunday finery, wore colorful hats and carried
frilly gloves. We shared with them a porcelain tea pot and cups, crystal
plates, sterling flatware and lace table cloths. Of course, we pretended to
have tea. And in so doing, introduced them to the words, pretend and
imagination. As a special treat for us, the older children modeled hats that
they made. The younger children wore costumes, hats and sang three
songs. The literacy project afforded a delightful experience for both the
Continentals and the children.
Another national initiative we explored was Childhood Obesity. Childhood
obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start
children on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults,
such as type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low self
esteem and depression. In an on-going look at childhood obesity in the
Saint Louis Post Dispatch Newspaper recently featured an article entitled,
"Action Is Urged To Battle Obesity" - "stating that today's children may be
the first generation to face shorter life spans because of the epidemic.
About one in five Saint Louis children and teenagers are obese.
Our Chapter developed the "Seed-to-Table Project and utilized Aero
Gardens to help curb Childhood Obesity. The project was presented to 2
first grade classes at Pierre Laclede Elementary School. The project was
designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle by eating a variety of vegetables.
The Aero Garden concept in the classroom allowed the children to learn
how various foods grow, incorporate vegetables, fruits and herbs in their
diets and promoted nutritional education. Three electrical Aero Gardens
were placed in the classroom. They consisted of a red ladybug, black and
yellow bumble bee and a domino design. They were selected to peak the
interest of the children. The materials include the grow lamps, bulbs and
nutrients, seed kit, garden shears and manual. This project began on
January 20, 2012. We are delighted to note that the herbs grown at Pierre
Laclede School have been shared with the Community Garden Project in
East Saint Louis, Illinois. to help combat obesity
In addition to participating in the national initiatives, the Saint Louis Chapter
pursued specific local projects to include: The Impact of Alzheimer's
Disease on Families specifically children, Say Yes to Children Campaign,
Make A Joyful Noise-Christmas Concert, High School Mentoring Program
and Dress For Success.
Saint Louis Continentals are dedicated to the mission of Continental
Societies Incorporated "To create environments within our communities
that empower children to have access to quality and appropriate
opportunities to reach their optimal potential."

with the "Seed-to-Table Project, using the Aero Gardens to help
curb childhood obesity.
