What is your choice? Giving your power away sets you up to blame. – Giving your power away to children sets them up to be “pleasers” or “controllers.” It also sets you up to blame them for your frustrations. Ask yourself, “How do I help the child more likely choose to ________,” rather than “How can I get the child to _____________?” Power comes from choice – not force Change “Don’t make me have to _____.” to “I’m going to _________.” And you will reclaim your power. This also moves the conversation from being personal to being logical. A positive and a negative option is not really a choice but a manipulation. Get your shoes on to go or I will leave without you. Two positive choices optimize the chance for cooperation. You can put your shoes on alone or I can help you. You can start with your left shoe or your right. Which do you prefer? It is impossible to make your own choices and simultaneously please others. When a child comes to tell on another child you can ask: “Are you telling me to be helpful or hurtful?” If it is just telling to get the classmate or sibling in trouble then we need to refocus the child on the meaning. Child- “Lana isn’t cleaning up!” Adult- “Are you telling me to be helpful or hurtful?” Child – “Helpful?” Adult – “So you want to make sure everyone is helping keep the classroom/home clean? Great! Then you could be helpful by reminding Lana to help clean-up too. You can say ‘Lana, it’s time to clean up. I can help you get started with these blocks.’” *By giving the child the example of what it should sound like to remind another child to clean up help set the tone and gives the wording. This prevents the other child from saying the typical “Mom said you have to …” Join us next time--- Wednesday, March 16th – 10:30am – Positive Intent & Empathy ISP’s WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Educational excellence for a future without borders. www.isp.edu.pa Issue 24 Middle School Diane Guevara Middle School Principal—dguevara@isp.edu.pa Vickie Swann Assistant Principal vswann@isp.edu.pa STEM: Hands on learning for 8th Grade Students 8th Grade STEM students had a special opportunity to visit the ongoing Field Renovation Project and learn about the engineering design process first hand. Carlos Leignadier, ISP's project manager, spoke with the class about the new soccer field project, which included a review of the detailed scale plans of the field, the schedule start to finish, and information about the different materials being used for the project. Students also enjoyed learning about the slope of the field in order for the pipes to drain properly. Mr. Leignadier and Mr. Smyth even allowed the class to walk around the construction site in order to see all the action and how everything is coming together. Many students are even more excited to pursue engineering! #THEREISNOPLACELIKEISP ISP’s WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Educational excellence for a future without borders. www.isp.edu.pa Issue 24 Middle School Diane Guevara Middle School Principal—dguevara@isp.edu.pa Vickie Swann Assistant Principal vswann@isp.edu.pa This week the 8th grade students began the process of transition to high school. The high school counselors, along with experienced 9th grade students, visited Advisory on Tuesday to share important information. There will be additional meetings and activities for our 8th graders to support them in this exciting process. Many parents asked us to share the presentation so we have loaded it on to our webpage. This meeting will be about course registration for next year -- and about academic choices (and beyond) in high school in general. This is not a critical “must attend” meeting – but an optional meeting for those of you who have questions, would like more perspective, or would appreciate the opportunity to discuss all of this. All eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade parents are invited. Parents of seniors are also welcome – though not much of this will be relevant to you at this point. However, your perspectives may prove helpful to other parents (of younger students). Remember, please, that very specific questions about your son’s or daughter’s courses next year are best taken care of via meetings with your son’s or daughter’s counselor. Tuesday morning’s meeting will be more about the decision process in general – and broader perspectives and considerations. Eric Monson and John Shea will begin the meeting with their thoughts – which will be about 25-30 minutes. The rest of the time will be Q&A and discussion. Coffee, juice, light snacks will be provided, of course. Thankfully, I was appointed Editor-inChief of MUNITY Press, THIMUN's official newspaper, also considered a Special Committee. I can easily say that the THIMUN conference in the Netherlands was one of the best experiences of my life. I worked rigorously with the most diverse and intelligent group of people I have ever met, and all of us became extremely united by the end of the conference. My role as an Officer also taught me a lot about the real world, considering that we had to produce a daily newspaper for approximately 3,500 delegates, board members, and MUN directors. I got the opportunity to work in a real press room with real deadlines and so many commitments, but all the hard work was worth it when I saw the end product. As a whole, THIMUN broadened my views on so many current issues and taught me a lot about how the world works in the big scheme - something that I would never be able to learn in a classroom. Out of all the MUN conferences I have participated in, THIMUN was by far the most thrilling. Peter Smyth, Athletic Director—psmyth@isp.edu.pa AASCA soccer 2016 – A year to remember The AASCA soccer tournament is arguably the flagship event in the AASCA sporting calendar. 23 teams and over 420 players form around Central America competing over three days. This year’s tournament took place in El Salvador, was hosted by Escuela Americana de El Salvador, and was played in some wonderful venues including the historic Cuscatlán Stadium. There is no doubt that the soccer program has been gaining momentum in both the boys and girls teams over the last 3 years. The hard work put forth in training has paid dividends both in local ADECOP tournaments and private competition (Copa Talento and Liga 10) with both boys and girls making successive finals in multiple age categories. The teams left Panama early Tuesday morning during Carnival eager to get settled and excited for the upcoming days of competition. Coach Daniel Aquino for the boys and coach Gustavo Aguiar felt that this year could be the year. Since transitioning form the small schools competition to the large schools competition ISP has made steady improvement. The level of competition and standard of play in the large schools competition is excellent and attracts many scouts from the US and various academies. This year saw the IMG academy in attendance looking at players and providing advice to players and coaches alike. The boys played exceptionally well and for the first time ever won all their group games coming top of the group. Several 8th graders, under the guidance of Senior stalwarts in the squad, made great contributions on the field of play (the future looks bright for boys soccer). The quarter finals proved the stumbling block for the boys. Despite huge pressure against ANS the boys were unable to find the net and the score was 0-0 at full time. ISP once again found themselves in the uncomfortable position of penalties to decide the winner. Unfortunately despite a tight shootout (7-6) ISP did not go through to the semifinals. Similar to the boys basketball performance in October, ISP soccer is now officially on the map. Who knows what might have been if he boys had gone through. All we know is that this is the best any ISP boys team have done at the Large schools AASCA event and Coach Aquino is excited about the upcoming year and already making plans for next year. Girls make ISP AASCA history AASC 2016 was always going to be a tough tournament. The travelling squad was small and the players knew they had their work cut out. With limited subs the team was going to be pushing themselves to their mental and physical limit. The group stages saw the girls playing on the massive field of Estadio Cuscatlán. Coach Aguiar knew that he would have to count on his AASCA veterans to show the leadership and strength required to perform – and they did. The final game in the group stages was a tense affair against Lincoln Costa Rica and was looking to go to penalties. Both teams pushing equally and missing chances to go ahead. The final 5 minutes saw Lincoln pushing hard and ISP looked to be on the ropes when a free kick to ISP was awarded just outside the Lincoln box. A stunning goal from ISP made for a frenzied burst of energy from the ISP players and when they scored again in the closing seconds the girl’s fate was sealed. ISP were through to the AASCA semifinals. With only 13 girls they had pulled off the impossible and the buzz in the team and surrounding teams was palpable. The semifinal was again played at Cuscatlán and the girls were unable to beat the host school (they went on to win the tournament) despite playing some excellent soccer. Exhausted physically and mentally it took some time for time to realize that they had achieved what has eluded so many teams before them. Congratulations to ALL the boys, girls and coaches on an excellent AASCA. Stay tuned for when they are in action during the ADECOP season and make sure you put a date in your calendar to come out and cheer our Dolphins. You can always stay up to date with matches and events through Twitter and Instagram. #ispathletics #goispdolphins ISP’s WEEKLY NEWSLETTER Educational excellence for a future without borders. www.isp.edu.pa Issue 24 Athletics: #GOISPDOLPHINS! The level of competition was fierce, and our swimmers looked fantastic, demonstrating the gains from their hard work and practice this semester. It was a fantastic meet featuring many personal best times for our swimmers. The final meet results were ISP victorious over the MET with scores of 702 and 509, respectively. The ISP Dolphins Middle and High School Swim Team will be in action again next week on Friday and Saturday at the second AASCA Swimming Invitational at the American Nicaraguan School in Managua. The meet will feature nearly 120 swimmers from 7 schools in Central America. Please wish good luck to our Dolphin swimmers next week before they leave. We are looking forward to a great trip.
