Darlington Raceway
Welcome
Dear Media Member,
As the Director of Public Relations at Darlington Raceway, I would like to thank you for your coverage
of one of NASCAR’s most historic racing facilities.
Your coverage of the sport and specifically the track Too Tough to Tame is important to the overall stability and interest of the greatest racing in the world – NASCAR. It is because of you that the sport stays in
the hearts and minds of the millions of people that call themselves race fans.
Darlington Raceway prides itself on its tradition and historical significance each and every year and this
season will be no different. The Lady in Black is home to some of the sports closest finishes with drivers
earning their Darlington Stripe along the way during 367 laps of exciting Sprint Cup racing action during
the annual Bojangles’ Southern 500.
My race weekend staff and I will do whatever is necessary to
make your stay in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina an
enjoyable and productive one.
Thank you again for your interest in Darlington Raceway and
we’ll see you at the track!
Sincerely,
Dennis Worden

Darlington’s History is in the Writing on the Wall
Whether sitting in
the grandstands or
the driver’s seat,
plenty of those at
the track today
think Darlington
Raceway is alive.
Maybe. Maybe not.
It’s all in one’s
perspective.
This 1.366-mile oval behaves differently for certain drivers and many get spooked when they try to navigate its egg shape. Some say the secret to success is letting the track reach out and push a driver through
the challenging turns. Others say it’s in a driver’s ability to push himself into the wall and catapult
himself through the turn.
Either way, the result is called a “Darlington Stripe” and whoever masters that aspect may well be on
his way to Gatorade Victory Lane.
Where it All Began
Local businessman Harold Brasington returned from the Indianapolis 500 in 1933 and told some of his
friends he wanted to build a paved susperspeedway in Darlington, South Carolina.
Most of his buddies probably thought Brasington was a little crazy, for there weren’t many paved
superspeedways anywhere in the world, let alone little ol’ Darlington. They were still racing on the beach
in Daytona when Darlington was finished.
But, Brasington proved to be a stubborn man. In 1949, he set out to build his dream on land that once
grew peanuts and cotton.
Darlington wasn’t exactly a big city back then, with a population of barely more than 6,600, but
Brasington plowed ahead with his plans — literally. He worked as part of the construction crew, often
climbing aboard one of the bulldozers to move dirt from place to place.
He soon ran into a problem, though, when Sherman Ramsey, the fellow who owned the land, said he
didn’t want anyone messing with his minnow pond. So, instead of building a true oval, Brasington
simply shrunk what became Turns 1 and 2 — thus, “egg-shaped” oval.
Ramsey’s Pond is still here, but Turns 1 and 2 became Turns 3 and 4 in a revision years later.
And, to further confuse drivers, one end of the track is banked a little higher than the other. So, maybe
the track “Too Tough to Tame” isn’t a carbon-copy of Indianapolis, but everyone agrees it has its charm.

1949 » Trucking company owner Harold Brasington and
plywood manufacturer J. Sherman Ramsey, who owned the
property where Darlington Raceway is located, planned to
build a racetrack. The land once was part cotton field and part
peanut farm. The third element on the grounds is a minnow
pond (about half the size of a football field), which dictates
how the track was situated on the land, and its egg-like shape.

driver Johnny Mantz, who showed up as a spectator, had a
car bought for him —
then being used to
run business errands.
He won after being
the slowest qualifier.
He ran the full 500
miles on the same set
of tires, as witnessed
by Firestone’s Bill McCrary. The night before the race, Mantz
attended a party in Myrtle Beach and almost didn’t make it
back in time for the race. He took two aspirins and buckled
up. Jack Smith, who finished 29th, said preparing his own car
meant placing masking tape over the headlights, securing the
doors with dog collars, and using rope as a seat belt. The race
is originally set to be sanctioned by an independent group
called Central States Racing Association and promoter Norm
Witte. However, after little interest is shown and only sparse
entries received, NASCAR is asked to step in.

Darlington’s History is in the Writing on the Wall
Getting the Green Flag
Brasington and his crew finished the track in 1950, and a race was
scheduled for Labor Day. He expected about 10,000 people – quite a
crowd for a small town like Darlington – but the fans kept pouring in.
An estimated 25,000 fans packed in, standing shoulder to shoulder
trying to get a glimpse of the exciting spectacle.
The race was called the Southern 500, and the purse was an incredible
$25,000. That doesn’t sound like much now, but, back then, that was
a load of money. The average income in 1950 was only a little more
than $3,000.
More than 70 cars showed up to contest the race, and it took two
weeks to get them all qualified for the event. When the green flag
waved, 75 cars started the race, lined up three abreast – like the
Indy 500.
The big names of the day were in the field – guys like Lee Petty, Red
Byron, Cotton Owens, Curtis Turner, Tim Flock and Buck Baker to name
only a very few. And, there were plenty of unknowns, too, as a few
drivers made their one and only NASCAR starts that day.
Curtis Turner was one of NASCAR’s
early superstars. He claimed 17 victories in 183 starts, including one
at Darlington Raceway in 1956. His
career winnings totaled a little more
than $122,000.

1953 » Harold
Turner started first, but he dropped
out after 275 of the 400 laps on what
was then a 1.25-mile track. He finished 60th.
Six hours and 38 minutes after it
started, a former Indy 500 driver
named Johnny Mantz took the checkered flag. He averaged 75.25 mph in a
Plymouth owned by Hubert Westmoreland.
Mantz won $10,510 that day, and
became the answer to Darlington’s
first trivia question.
Mantz showed up in 1951 to defend his Southern 500 title, but his
luck wasn’t so good the second time
around. He dropped a valve and finished 76th in the 82-car field.
Brasington
sells his shares in Darlington
Raceway, and Bob Colvin is
installed as general manager.
The track is enlarged from its
original 1.25-mile format to
1.366 miles by restructuring
the first turn. The first Miss
Southern 500 beauty pageant
is held. Junior Johnson wins the Modified-Sportsman
200. In the Southern 500, four drivers swap the lead 35
times. Buck Baker wins.
1954 » Manuel Ayulo wins the AAA open-wheel event.
1955 » The Board of Directors approves building a new
grandstand to hold 16,000 fans. Herb Thomas becomes the
second driver to win the Southern 500 without a tire change.
1956 » Pat O’Connor wins the AAA openwheel race. For
the Southern 500, all 32,000 seats were sold out a week before the race.
1957 » Darlington gets a second race date in the spring
to accompany the Southern 500. Fireball Roberts wins the
convertible event. Speedy Thompson wins the Southern 500,
averaging 100.094 mph, surpassing the 100-mph barrier for
the first time in the race.
1960 » David Pearson talks about
the track’s infamous “bear grease”
sealant: “I never had seen a race here
until I came to run. And, the first time
I came across the track, they’d just
put down that old ‘bear grease,’ and
it was slick and shiny. I said, ‘Lord,
have mercy!’ I couldn’t hardly walk
on it, much less race on it.”

Track History
Darlington’s History is in the Writing on the Wall
Racing Into History
The legend of the Southern 500 soon grew, and so did that of Darlington Raceway. In 1958, the steel
guardrail in Turn 1 fell down after three crashes. Jack Smith actually went through the railing and out of
the track, so NASCAR officials warned drivers to go slow through that turn.
Fireball Roberts didn’t listen, and he consistently whipped through Turn 1 on the high side. He won by five laps.
In 1957, a second race joined the schedule, and fans kept coming. Darlington Raceway soon became as
much a part of Southern tradition as barbecue and college football.
In 1962, Junior Johnson seemed to be the first driver to get to the checkered flag in the Southern 500.
A scoring check later determined that Larry Frank was the actual winner.
In 1965, Ned Jarrett won by a record margin of 14 laps. He was simply too smooth that day.
Taking a Stripe
The drivers were getting smarter in the 1960s and learned the fast way around was to actually bounce
off the wall. Teams would put extra bracing in the right side of their cars in order to sustain the beatings
they took in a race. It’s where the term “Darlington Stripe” came from and, while history didn’t record
who first coined the phrase, it stuck.
Soon, a new saying was going around Darlington: “There are two kinds of drivers at Darlington: those
who have hit the wall … and those who will.”
And, it was true. The pole speed back in 1950 was 82.034 mph. By the late 1960s, it was more than
150 mph. At those speeds, the track’s challenge level increased. In the late 1970s, Terry Labonte, Buddy
Baker and Joe Ruttman tangled on the backstretch — under caution!
“It seemed that an invisible hand came out from the wall and smacked our cars into one another,”
Labonte said later. Maybe he was right.
Darlington Raceway and the results of its infamous Darlington Stripe are illustrated quite clearly on the sides of the
cars of Fred Lorenzen (No. 28) and Richard Petty (No. 43) in 1964. The obvious question is: How does the wall look?

As Yet Untamed
Darlington has hosted some memorable races
over the years, but few drivers could say they
have truly mastered this egg-shaped lady.
David Pearson may have come close. He won
10 races and 12 Coors Light Pole Awards.
But, then, Pearson was subdued by the track
in 1979. He rolled out of the pits prematurely,
and both left-side wheels came off his car.
Not down for long, Pearson came back in
the Southern 500 that year. Substituting for
injured rookie Dale Earnhardt, Pearson came
from a lap down to win after Darrell Waltrip
spun twice in a 10-lap span.
Earnhardt won nine times, and he mastered
a passing move that left other drivers eating
his dust. Earnhardt would ease into the wider
Turn 1, often slowing enough to let another
driver dart past. But, when that driver inevitably moved up the track because he was going
too fast, Earnhardt would shoot back by to
the inside.
David Pearson holds a distinctive place in
Darlington Raceway history: most victories (10) and
most Coors Light Pole Awards (12).

Close Finish
Perhaps the most famous finish in Darlington, if not all of NASCAR history came in 2003, when Ricky
Craven and Kurt Busch battled to the checkers. Craven’s car got better on long runs, and he caught and
passed Busch in the closing laps.
But, Busch wouldn’t be denied, either, bumping past Craven. Craven fought back, and the two bounced
off each other several times in the final lap.
They were side-by-side coming to the checkered flag, and smoke billowed as the two cars came to the
finish line. Craven got there first – barely. The margin of victory was .002 seconds, still a NASCAR Sprint
Cup record for the closest finish.
The race was named the best of the decade by the media following the 2009 season.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series at Darlington Raceway
2013 Bojangles’ Southern 500 Recap – Matt Kenseth Celebrates
while Kyle Busch Seethes
Kyle Busch was the focal point during most of the Bojangles’ Southern 500, until his dominant
night finished with run-in with Kasey Kahne – for the third time this season – and deflated right rear.
Once Busch’s car faded, Matt Kenseth took charge, leading the final 13 laps to score his series-best
third victory of the season.
Trailing Kenseth across the finish line was Denny Hamlin, running his first full race since suffering a
fractured vertebrae in a last-lap crash in March at Auto Club Speedway. Jeff Gordon, making his 700th
consecutive start, finished third. Points leader Jimmie Johnson was fourth.
Kenseth needed help early, but his car improved late in the race, putting him in position to win.
“It was just a crazy, grueling, difficult race,’’ Kenseth said.
Yet, it once again ended with a Gibbs car winning. Joe Gibbs Racing has won all five races on
non-restrictor-plate tracks more than 1 mile long this season (Las Vegas, Auto Club, Texas, Kansas and
Darlington).
It appeared Busch would win until his race unraveled. An aggressive move while racing Kahne for
the lead with 34 laps left caused Kahne to crash.
“He just made another mistake,’’ Kahne said of Busch. “That’s his third one when he’s been around
me. I don’t understand it.’’
Busch’s troubles continued when a right rear began losing air. His frustration mounted.
Busch finished sixth after leading 265 of the race’s 367 laps. He walked out of the garage without
speaking to the media.
While Busch’s race soured, Hamlin’s soared, but it wasn’t easy. He was worn out after his first full
race in more than a month.
Gordon tied his season-high with this third-place effort.
“I wanted the 700th (career start) to be a memorable one,’’ he said. “I’m glad it wasn’t like last
year’s memory where we blew two left rear tires. This as much better than that. We needed this kind
of performance.’’
Johnson was poised to challenge the Gibbs cars for the victory until he lost five spots on the final
pit stop after a caution on lap 329 and restarted eighth.
Kevin Harvick finished fifth, earning his second top-five finish in the last three races.

NASCAR Nationwide Series at Darlington Raceway
2013 VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200 Recap – Kyle Busch
and Joe Gibbs Racing dominate Darlington
If you don’t drive for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Nationwide Series at Darlington, then you don’t have
much of a chance.
Kyle Busch continued the organization’s dominance by winning Friday night’s VFW Sport Clips Help
a Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway. Busch’s victory marked the seventh win in the last eight races at
Darlington for JGR. For Busch, it was his fifth victory of the season and 56th in his Nationwide career.
Gibbs cars swept the top three spots and took four of the top five positions. After Busch, JGR had
Elliott Sadler second, Brian Vickers third and Matt Kenseth fifth. Joey Logano placed fourth.
Sadler overcame a spin on lap 50 of the 147-lap race to score his best finish of the season. Vickers
had to pit during under green because of a loose left rear wheel yet tied his season-best finish. Even
Busch had his struggles, losing a few spots during a pit stop when his jackman slipped and fell.
Busch took the lead for good with 17 laps left when he got around Logano. It wasn’t hard as Busch
had fresher tires than Logano, who didn’t pit during the final caution.
“I tried to stay in front of those Gibbs cars, but they’re so fast it was just hard to do,’’ Logano said.
Busch waited for Logano to slip before taking the lead. It was a sign, drivers said, of how tires are
starting to wear more on this track as the pavement ages.
“The falloff is certainly there,’’ Busch said. “It’s kind of fun, but it’s kind of nerve-racking, too, because you’re trying to push it to the limit as much as you can. You’re inches from the fence so anything
can happen.’’
Rookie Kyle Larson finished sixth in his first series start at this track.
Regan Smith finished seventh and remains the points leader. He has a 28-point bulge on Sam
Hornish Jr. heading into the May 25 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Sadler is third in the standings,
42 points out of the lead. Justin Allgaier is fourth (43 points behind the leader) and Vickers is fifth (49
points out of the lead).
