Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute FRIENDS The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, Lowy Packer Building, 405 Liverpool Street, Sydney, NSW 2010 ABN 61 068 363 235 Telephone: (02) 9295 8600 or 1300 VICTOR Fax: (02) 9295 8601 www.victorchang.edu.au Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Women Against Heart Disease May 2013 FAMED US CARDIOLOGIST GUEST SPEAKER AT THE 2ND MONICA O’LOUGHLIN WOMEN AGAINST HEART DISEASE LUNCH D r Noel Bairey Merz, Director of the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Centre and Cedars Sinai Heart Institute in the United States was the Institute’s guest speaker at the lunch held in March. Dr Merz has an extensive publication record of over 180 scientific publications, over 200 abstract and numerous book chapters. Heart disease is the biggest killer of Australian women with 52 having a heart attack every day, and 29 dying from it. That is four times more women than those who die of breast cancer. Dr Merz explained to the 400 mainly women attendees at the lunch that as a society women have been programmed to think of heart disease in a typically male way. In fact only a third of women will experience the same sort of symptoms as a male when suffering a heart attack. The ‘Yentl Syndrome’, as she refers to it, is the need for a woman to prove she is equal to a man before she will receive equal treatment as women have the same or similar risk factors as a male. The lunch concluded with a Q & A session from the guests attending. Our thanks go to Dr Merz for travelling to Australia and to the Commonwealth Bank for co-hosting the event. Also to our producer Ken Laing, Janine Perrett who stepped in a the last minute to emcee the lunch, Apac for televising the lunch and to all who supported the event either by donating prizes or by buying tickets and tables. Dr Merz offered the following tips on how to protect your heart health: The red dress is the symbol of women against heart disease 1. Don’t put it off any longer. It’s time to do everything you know you should be doing: Exercising, eating a low-fat –high-fibre diet, losing weight and quitting smoking. 2. Don’t fool yourself. Don’t think that just because you eat healthily, it’s OK to smoke a little. 3. Time Yourself. For heart health, you need to do 30 minutes of physical activity a day. 4. Focus on fitness level, not whether you are fat. If you’re fit, being a few kilograms overweight is more likely due to increased muscle. 5. Know the Symptoms. Many of us think we know what a heart attack looks like – only problem is, it’s different for women, who more typically have extreme fatigue, nausea and a feeling of tightness around their chest. 6. Keep aspirin handy. First check with your healthcare provider to ensure that aspirin is safe for you. If you notice symptoms of a heart attack, consider popping an aspirin in your mouth immediately and then call an ambulance. 7. Know your numbers. What is your blood pressure? What’s your cholesterol? Fasting blood sugar? 8. See your dentist, too. Infection in the teeth, gums and mouth can contribute to and trigger heart disease. Rather than using conventional heart failure medicine, the researchers identified and treated the gene mutation that caused their heart rhythm disorder, dilated cardiomyopathy which is a condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood to the body, making it a major risk factor for stroke and heart failure. Around 1 in 2000 Australians are affected by dilated cardiomyopathy. A s s o c i a te Professor Diane Fatkin, lead author of the study, said the results had been outstanding, with many of the patients with severe d i s e a s e returning to full health within 6 months. 42 members of an entire family with a history of dilated cardiomyopathy were screened by the VCCRI’s A/ Professor Fatkin, Prof Jamie Vandenberg and St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney’s A/Prof Rajesh Subbiah. Genetic screening of the family revealed a rare gene variant in the cardiac sodium channel that was present in all affected family members. They also found that many of these family members had a very unusual set of extra or ‘ectopic’ ventricular heart beats which are thought of as a consequence of dilated cardiomyopathy and not the other way round. Patients are treated with diuretics, beta blockers and the regular drugs you get for heart failure, but they found these patients weren’t getting any better – in fact they were getting worse. Laboratory studies on the gene mutation revealed that it caused increased ‘activity’ of the cardiac sodium channel, and in particular, increased activity in special fibres that are part of the conduction system of the ventricle – the Purkinje fibres. Based on this understanding, the researchers recommended that family members be treated with a ‘sodium Victor Chang Researcher receives a Human Frontier Science Program Grant V ictor Chang researcher Lawrence Lee has received a Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) grant, which supports collaboration among scientists working in different countries. The Human Frontier Science Program is an international program of research support, funding frontier research on the complex mechanisms of living organisms. Research is funded at all levels of biological complexity from biomolecules to the interactions between organisms. Lawrence’s project, titled “Artificial synthesis of the bacterial flagellar motor with DNA nanostructures”, will be a collaboration amongst researchers from the Victor Chang Institute (Australia), the University of Oxford (United Kingdom) and Keiichi Osaka University (Japan). Of the 715 submitted applications only 33 of those were awarded funding after having gone through a rigorous yearlong global selection process by high level expert international review committees. We congratulate Lawrence on such a wonderful achievement. channel blocker’ to potentially combat the ectopic beats. Sodium channel blockers are not usually recommended for patients with heart failure because of the potential for adverse side effects. Within 6 months following treatment with the sodium channel blocker, patients who had horrific ventricular ectopic beats, returned to almost normal electrocardiograms (ECG’s) and their heart function significantly improved. Although there is still a long way to go for many families, this research is an example of what can be achieved if we know the what, where and why about the underlying mutation. It is also a perfect example of research that extends from the bedside, to the bench and back to the bedside – and how molecular research and clinical medicine can come together to unravel the cellular mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies. The research will continue using Next Generation Sequencing to try to understand what causes inherited heart conditions in other families. VALE Dr Tommy Tycho, AM, MBE - one of Australia’s most celebrated musicians, virtuoso pianist, conductor, composer, arranger and mentor. Tommy was a patient of Dr Victor Chang’s and donated his time and talent to many Victor Chang fundraisers. The Institute offers its deepest sympathy to the Tycho family. May his memory and the wonderful contribution he made to entertainment industry live on forever. Our fully mobile and portable service brings the testing to you, to your workplace, business or event. In less than 10 minutes we measure a person’s blood pressure, total cholesterol and blood sugar levels and provide information on modifiable risk factors and healthy heart habits. A tiny blood sample from a finger prick is all that is required and results are available immediately for each person to take away with them. The heart health testing service continues to grow every year, to date we have conducted over 200 days of testing across Australia, covering 4 states and many NSW regional locations. • 10,356 individuals have been tested, with an average of 60 people per day • 2,211 or 26% of people had one or more results outside of healthy ranges and were recommended to follow-up with their doctor • 541 people or 6% of people had high blood pressure • 1,611 or 19% of had high cholesterol • 586 or 7% had high glucose/blood sugar High cholesterol continues to be the largest risk factor and is more than double the number of people with either high blood pressure or high blood sugar. Alarmingly, 52% of the individuals that were tested did not know what their cholesterol levels were. We want people to think about their hearts – these three very quick and simple tests can save a life and many heart attacks can be prevented by “knowing your numbers” and making simple lifestyle changes to diet and exercise. A heart- felt thank you to our Health Check Booth partners - HCF, KIA Motors and IMB Community Foundation, whose generous support is the foundation of our ongoing program. A select number of Sydney’s most sought after chefs vied for the title of 2012 Victor Chang Crab Eating Champion. Those competing included Justin North, Vio Pramono (The Morisson), Dan Hong (Mr Wong), Nghia Dinh (Wildfire) and, Jeremy Strode (Bistro CBD & The Fish Shop). Each chef was auctioned, by leading auctioneer Justin Miller, to the highest bidder and one of the guests attending had the chance to showcase his crab eating ability. It was a fun filled afternoon where the chefs were judged by My Kitchen Rules host and leading I chef Pete Evans, on their prowess of devouring a whole mud crab in an award winning time while obeying strict crab eating rules. Bribes and fines were encouraged. The 2012 Crab Eating Champion was Johnny Tibbetts – the guest competitor who certainly showcased his crab eating ability! To Debbie and her family, we share the pain you are feeling and offer you our love and support at this very sad time. WORKPLACE GIVING As the purse is emptied, the heart is filled – Victor Hugo D id you know that as an employer you can help the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute raise munch need funds for research by encouraging your employees to donate through your Workplace Giving Program? What is workplace giving? Workplace giving allows employees to donate money on a regular basis to one or more deductible gift recipients (DGR’s) directly through their pay. A DGR is a charity or other organisation that is entitled to receive tax deductible donations. How does workplace giving work? Employers invite their employees to enter into a workplace giving arrangement. Employees nominate their preferred DGR from the selection of DGR’s provided by their employers, the frequency of their donations (for example fortnightly, monthly etc) and the donation amount. The donation is paid directly by the employer to the DGR. When employers calculate the amount to be withheld from the employee’s salary for a pay period, they should deduct the employee’s donation amount from the gross salary before referring to the appropriate tax table. 6 For each income year employers should provide each employee with confirmation of the employee’s donation to DGR’s. The employee will need this confirmation to claim their tax deduction. The confirmation can be shown on the employee’s payment summary (formerly known as a group certificate). Alternatively, the confirmation can be provided in another written or electronic form. It is the employer’s responsibility to check a charity or other organisation’s DGR status. Benefits of Workplace Giving Program For charitable organisations, workplace giving provides long term, stable funding for core programs. This funding requires little or no administrative cost – no receipts, no cost of attracting donors, targeted communications Workplace giving can also provide access to the skills and volunteer time of employees. For employees, workplace giving enables affordable giving, through a transparent and trustworthy program, with no reduction in impact through costly fundraising. Employees are able to make donations in an efficient and tax-effective manner, eliminating the need to collect receipts or wait until the end of the year to claim a tax refund. For employers, workplace giving can provide a low cost, administratively simple way to create community-business partnerships and build employee morale, through mobilising significant funding and through volunteer involvement. Fish – Good for Your Heart Health W hat you eat is important. It may help prevent a heart attack or stroke. Healthy food habits can help you reduce three of the major risk factors for heart attack. high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and excess body weight. It will also help reduce the risk of stroke because heart disease and high blood pressure are major risk factors for stroke. By eating two serves of baked or grilled fish per week, you can help reduce your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Fish is a good source of protein without the high saturated fat found in fatty meat products. Oily fish like Swordfish, Salmon, Mackerel, Sardines and Sea Perch are also high in two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart health of not only healthy people, but also those at high risk of cardiovascular disease and those who already have cardiovascular disease. Fish and other marine life are rich sources of these polyunsaturated fatty acids. Steve Costi Seafoods® is a Victor Chang Ambassador and generously donates all the seafood for any event we stage.
