Who can attend Training: AACOG Academy training is for all peace officers, probation & parole officers, corrections officers, and telecommunications specialists. Federal and military law enforcement are allowed to attend AACOG training. Certain civilians in criminal justice occupations can attend certain classes with Academy Coordinator approval. Anyone who is currently between law enforcement agencies (not currently commissioned) can also attend as long as they do not currently have their TCLEOSE license suspended or revoked. 2. Method of Payment - Currently, the Academy does not accept credit cards or debit cards. Training can be paid by check, money order, exact cash, or AACOG can invoice an officer’s agency. Payment or payment arrangements are generally made on the day of class. 3. Dress Policy – The AACOG Law Enforcement Academy is a place of business. No one will be admitted to training wearing shorts, flip-flops, or any clothing deemed inappropriate or offensive. 4. TCLEOSE PID#’s – TCLEOSE went to Personal Identification Numbers (PIDs) for all Texas peace officers several years ago. These numbers are required in order for a peace officer to receive credit for training. Individual officers are responsible for having their TCLEOSE PID# at the beginning of class. If you do not know your PID#, ask your training officer/administrator beforehand or contact TCLEOSE directly: 512-936-7700. 5. Classroom Etiquette – Understandably, some people may need to have their cell phones on during training. Please have the phones on vibrate, and if you need to take a call, quietly exit the classroom and take your call outside the room. Texting in the class – As a general rule, this should be done sparingly. This will be left to the individual instructor for each class as to what level of texting is acceptable. Please keep it reasonable and related to business or emergencies. General Behavior – Reading the morning paper while a class is in session is simply rude. Please refrain from such actions. Although rarely a problem, it should be noted that anyone who is disruptive and interfering with instruction during training will be asked to leave and the administrative head for their agency will be notified. Food and drink may or may not be permissible in the training classroom depending on which classroom you are in. Please follow the local guidelines where the training is taking place. If there are any questions or comments, please feel free to contact Mr. Richard Bryan, Academy Coordinator at 210-362-5258 or rbryan@aacog.com. 4 CORRECTIONS Corrections Officer Certification Date Call for Dates 8:30-5:30 Hours 96 Course & Class Location Cost Basic County Corrections Officer $400 w/Agency Kerr County Sheriff’s Dept. $450 w/o Agency 400 Clearwater Paseo Instructor/Staff Kerrville, Texas 78028 For individuals not employed by an agency, the following documents are required prior to beginning the class: Entrance Exam Background Check Physical Exam Drug Screen Psychological Exam For information on completing these requirements, enrolling, or to schedule an entrance examination date, call the Academy at 210-362-5291. BACK TO TABLE OF CONTENTS 39 CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM The AACOG Criminal Investigator Certification Program is a comprehensive program consisting of training in some of the expected skill sets of knowledgeable criminal investigators. Whether you are currently a criminal investigator or looking to become one in the future, the AACOG Criminal Investigator Certification Program will provide the training and resources you need towards running a successful investigation. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION TRAINING PROGRAMS IN TEXAS! The program curriculum contains a total of fifteen (15) criminal investigation training courses. Upon completion of all fifteen courses, a person may submit an application for a certificate of completion for the program to the Academy along with copies of their course certificates (see page 46 for course listing and application). All courses must have been completed through the AACOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy. See the following page for Frequently Asked Questions. BACK TO TABLE OF CONTENTS 40 Frequently Asked Questions For the AACOG Criminal Investigator (CI) Certification Program 1. How long is the program? It depends how often someone attends the training when it is available. The Academy has recently updated the program with even more valuable training, and we intend to offer the courses in a structured manner so someone seeking certification and attending every class as it is made available can complete the program within the year. Understandably, if every class is not attended in sequence, it will extend the total amount time before the program is completed. 2. Why must every class in the program be through the Academy? We cannot attest to the quality of the curriculum from other trainers. Case in point, our original curriculum allowed for any TCLEOSE Intermediate Crime Scene Investigation class to be accepted towards completion of the CI Program. It was later discovered the TCLEOSE Intermediate Crime Scene Investigation class is offered on-line through some training providers. We at the AACOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy feel a practical training course such as Crime Scene Investigation should never be offered as an on-line course. We teach this course using actual mock crime scenes. 3. Are your instructors experienced investigators? Yes! Our instructors are subject matter experts with real life experiences as criminal investigators. 4. Do I have to pursue the AACOG Criminal Investigator Certification in order to take one of the classes listed in the curriculum? No. Enrollment in any of our listed courses is open to all law enforcement personnel seeking training. The program is designed so people can take the courses one at a time as available and there is no requirement that someone be actively pursuing Criminal Investigator Certification. 5. If I take a couple of classes from the program curriculum and later decide to attend the other courses to achieve certification, will the previous classes count? Yes. As long as you can provide the AACOG course certificates from all the classes taken. This program is self-paced. When you complete all the required courses, you will need to send copies of your course certificates with a completed application. Tymrak presented the family of Miguel Angel Alonzo, III with an academy badge pendant donated by David Putnam of Alamo City Gold & Silver in San Antonio. Mr. Putnam is a retired San Antonio Police Officer who provides badge pendants to the families of fallen officers. In October 2011, Miguel Alonzo, a recent graduate of the AACOG Academy, was in a parking lot of a business when one of his friends who had an altercation with another man was run over by the man as he stood in the parking lot. Miguel ran to the aid of his friend when the suspect then intentionally ran over Miguel with his vehicle and fled the scene. Miguel passed away as a result of the injuries he incurred. The suspect was arrested months later and is currently awaiting trial. Because Miguel had not been commissioned with a law enforcement agency at the time, his story was not known to David Putnam, owner of Alamo City Gold & Silver. Mr. Ed Coffey, AACOG Academy Advisory Board Member, shared Miguel’s story in passing at a meeting, and David later agreed to provide a custom academy badge pendant inscribed with Miguel’s name and End of Watch (EOW) date. The pendant was later presented to Miguel’s mother at the AACOG January Board of Directors meeting. Special Thanks to Mr. Ed Coffey, Mr. David Putnam, and AACOG Chair Don J. Tymrak for remembering and recognizing our cadet, Miguel Angel Alonzo III, for his honorable actions and desire to pursue a law enforcement career. BACK TO TABLE OF CONTENTS 56 The Academy Visits the Capitol for AACOG Day March 12, 2013 Along with members of other AACOG divisions and local elected officials, members of the AACOG Academy staff visited the State Capitol on March 12, 2013. The AACOG agenda was to raise awareness to elected officials in Austin about the importance and value of service AACOG (and other council of governments in general) provide to their respective regions. Some of the main topics of discussion in Austin centered around AACOG’s involvement in assisting local communities with the Eagle Ford Shale project, water availability, and of course, regional law enforcement academy funding. Many state leaders were visited and their offices informed about the services provided by AACOG. The importance of their support on issues with law enforcement academy funding, and training funds in general, was highly stressed. The good news thus far from the Criminal Justice Division of the Governor’s Office is that the AACOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy will receive funding for the next two years beginning September 1, 2013. Any additional funding beyond 2015 will need the support and action of state legislatures. This will hopefully be addressed before the 83rd Session of the Texas State Legislature ends in June 2013. BACK TO TABLE OF CONTENTS 57 AACOG LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREER AND EDUCATION FAIR The Academy will be hosting a peace officer career and education fair at our offices at 8700 Tesoro Drive, in San Antonio on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 (9:00a – 11:30a). Agency recruiters looking for eligible applicants can contact BPOC Academy Supervisor Mike Davis at 210-362-5272 or mdavis@aacog.com to reserve their spot. There is no charge for agencies or attendees. This is a free community service provided by the Academy. HAVE YOU HEARD THE RUMOR? It has been brought to our attention at AACOG there is a rumor we were going to close the doors of the Academy on January 1, 2013. We would like to squash this rumor immediately. Like most every other government entity in the State, the AACOG Law Enforcement Academy has endured budget cuts. We are adjusting accordingly. Funding was cut for all regional academies across the state in the 2011 legislative session due to an oversight. That issue is currently being addressed in Austin. Meanwhile, the AACOG Law Enforcement Academy is still here and continuing to provide the best licensing and in-service training we can. Best Regards, Richard D.
