How can one possibly express the depths of the soul, the abstraction of the mind, or the yearnings of the heart with but 26 letters? A Children’s Tragedy Tues 5, 8:40pm | Thurs 7, 6:20pm and 8:10pm | Fri 8, 6:55pm Wed 13, 6:35pm | Fri 15, 7:10pm (20 mins) The Helix $5 Created by Stephanie Dimitriou, with Ariadne Sgouros and Eliza Quinn A Children’s Tragedy explores the uncertain, uneasy and uncomfortable transition from childhood into other: this growing period where you become responsible for more than you ought to, and attempt to grasp at knowledge you are not ready to understand. Drawing from Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening, this two-hander is intimate, unsettling, beautiful and tragic. A Concerta-d Effort Mon 4, 6:20pm | Wed 6, 7:35pm | Thurs 7, 8:30pm | Wed 13, 6:20pm Thurs 14, 8pm (30 mins) The Muse $5 Created and performed by Tom Middleditch The use of prescription medication to deal with the less desirable tendencies and genuine difficulties of ASD folks has been very popular for the past 30 years or so. But, what is it like being brought up on this kind of medication? How much of an answer is it? Come listen to Tom Middleditch lift the lid on the 15 years of his life that was spent on prescription medication. Growing up, dealing with things, and eventually doing away with prescription drugs, all taken one day at a time. Absurd-ish Mon 4, 8pm | Tues 5, 7pm | Tues 12, 7:20pm | Wed 13, 7pm Fri 15, 8:20pm (30 mins) The Muse $5 Written and performed by John Collopy John Collopy has been described as “funny” and “a human being”. He is at least one of these things and the strange combination of ‘sharp wit’ and a ‘brain’ means that he sometimes picks up on the bizarre, the odd, and the absurd. This show will be an amalgamation of these things, something funny, with the acceptable number of jokes: several; and numerous humorous stories that may occasionally rhyme. The show will certainly be curious, it will include laughs, it will be entertaining, but most of all it will be absurd. Ish. Acoustic Sessions with Olivia Jade Wed 6, 8:10pm | Wed 13, 6:40pm (30 mins) The HUB FREE What do you get when you take a classic show tune and turn it into a reggae song? Or a hardcore rap favourite into a sweet folk melody? Do you enjoy a good old singa-long? Perhaps it’s the sound of a rusty six-string that tickles your ears, or maybe it’s the pitter-patter of brushes on the old pig-skin. Or, if you’re just feeling lazy and you happen to be standing next to a funky little folk venue, then come on in! Drink in hand and company on arm, come and check out an acoustic session with Olivia Jade. Accompanied by the talented Mr. Fraser Nelson, you will be in for an ear-full of cheek, sweet originals and covers. But then, that’s not quite it. In a performance which is both a cabaret of a cabaret and a performance of a performance, one besotted admirer hopes to have a brief encounter with not only what it was to be the Noel Coward that the man created for the public, but also the man himself, who hid so much extraordinary brilliance behind a lightness of touch. Danception Thurs 7, 8:45pm and 9:30pm | Fri 8, 7:30pm and 8:15pm Thurs 14, 8pm and 8:45pm (30 mins) The Helix $5 By C@’s of A$cot Vale (Ashlea English and Tessa Broadby) A performance mash-up of dance, fashion, professional lip-syncing and visual art. Witness two girls bring awareness to their inner world: their thoughts, perceptions and sensations; through improvised dance offerings. Engage in a ritualistic clothing swap. View an exhibition of celebrity fan art. Connect through guided meditation and psychic forecasts. Inspiration for the work is sourced from all things popular culture including: Youtube, social media, celebrities and trends. Daily we are overloaded with sensory information including a constant mental chatter. Danception will observe how the ‘mental voice’ attempts to define ‘who we are’ and creatively challenge its existence. Dank Beats, Airtight Barrels Mon 4, 9:25pm | Tues 5, 7:05pm | Thurs 7, 6:50pm | Fri 8, 9:05pm Tues 12, 7:10pm | Fri 15, 9:15pm (25 mins) The Helix $5 Created and performed by Nick Walters Dank Beats, Airtight Barrels deconstructs the notion of intimate exchanges within the public domain, fuelled by the culture surrounding social media applications as a network for explicit encounter. Giving a voice to the nature of internet and popular culture, the work questions the portrayal of masculinity, violence and censorship in today’s cultural landscape. With ties into neurological pathways, it is an investigation of the ways in which men relate to one another and the physicality of these interactions. Charged with physical and oftentimes violent movement sequences, this testosterone-stricken work reflects the dark uncertainty and risk associated with online anonymity. Dark Paradises—Visual Art Throughout the festival The HUB FREE Created by Ryan Pola Dark Paradises is a collection of collage work that looks at the upper echelons of notoriety, seduction, and saddened beauty along with the lower tiers of consumerism, dreams, and desire. These works are born of obsession and adoration, of a time once past and of letting bygones be bygones. Drawing on former decades and modern western values, Ryan cuts and pastes images and words to create new contexts and new meanings. Collage is how he creates his Dark Paradise. (See also Old School Glamour / Hollywood Decay–Interactive Collages) Dearly Tues 5, 8:30pm | Thurs 7, 6:10pm | Tues 12, 6:50pm | Fri 15, 6:15pm (45 mins) The Quirk $5 By Sophie Jevons, Performed by Carla Scotto, Haydyn Jones, Angus Attwood, Nick Madders, Michal Klein and Jarryd Redwood The Dearly Departed. It’s what we call them. Even if they’re just a young girl. It’s the same. It’s like they’re not real anymore. But they were real. She was–she is. They say in death, all questions are answered. They never mentioned that all the questions have to be asked first. And in the end, all things finish. Sh’ma Yis’ra’el... Del Reyality Thurs 7, 7:35pm | Thurs 14, 9:30pm | Fri 15, 7:40pm (20 mins) The Helix $5 Created and performed by Long Tran Enigmatic, sensual, mysterious, luscious. Mon 4, 7pm | Mon 11, 8:30pm | Tues 12, 8pm (20 mins) The Muse $5 Performed by Elliot Roberts This Container Festival, Elliot Roberts is swapping his guitar, his musical swagger, and his James Cerche for a bare stage, painful memories, and hopefully some good jokes as he alone performs stand-up comedy. The Execution Mon 4, 6:50pm | Tues 5, 6:45pm | Mon 11, 9:30pm | Wed 13, 6:50pm Thurs 14, 6:20pm (25 mins) The Quirk $5 Written and directed by Jarryd Redwood, Performed by Carla Scotto and Rhian Wilson On the day of her execution, a criminal is given the chance to escape her deadly fate by the one who should be administering it: her own executioner. But when all does not go to plan for the executioner, and the game of life and death comes to a stalemate, the two are plunged into an existential crisis wherein they debate the meaning of life, death, and everything in-between. The Execution is an absurdist piece full of wordplay, wit and wicked humour in which the actors alternate roles with each performance. Papa G and The Starcats Fri 8, 9:35pm | Thurs 14, 9:15pm (60 mins) The HUB FREE After starting up in early 2013, Papa G and The Starcats have been playing round the Melbourne traps with a sound described as “Robert Glasper x funky soul”. They had a residency at Ding Dong Lounge in October with soul legend Vince Peach on the decks, were invited to play at the Inca Roads Music Festival late in 2013, and have played at other iconic Melbourne venues such as the Evelyn Hotel. Their grooves delve into reggae, latin, and take great inspiration from people like Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band. A plucky young nurse accompanies her to a beachside retreat to work through this strange crisis. The two women form a bond and enjoy an idyllic, quiet existence in which nurse Alma even confesses her deepest secrets to Elizabeth. The seclusion forces the women to drop these masks and to confront the disturbing truth of what lies beneath them. NB. Strobe lighting will be used in this performance Personalesque Mon 11, 6pm–9:30pm (Sessions 5–7 mins pp) miniMUST $2 at the miniMUST door—No bookings Performed by Anna Burley / Ira Luxuria Viewing burlesque, as well as performing it, creates and requires something of a magical distance between performer and audience to allow fantasies of glamour to play out. In the blind spots between stage lighting and audience seating, we can’t be entirely sure that both parties are seeing each other for what they really are. What if we eschewed this for five minutes? In a short experiment, you and I will perform our roles as voyeur and spectacle face-to-face. I’m Anna, I’m also sometimes burlesque dancer Ira Luxuria. I do sexy dances for big crowds, but not tonight. Emma and Edmund’s relationship was built on close encounters, chance meetings and missed connections. For some reason they just kept running into each other. Edmund thought it was a sign, Emma thought that was ridiculous. They both think they are meant to be together. Then they break up. Then they get lonely and get back together. Then they break up again. A pair of twenty-somethings stuck in a cycle of love and heartbreak. Serenade II: The Piano Strikes Back Tues 5, 7:30pm | Mon 11, 8:15pm | Tues 12, 6:55pm (35 mins) The Garland–The Cabaret Club $5 Performed by Sophie Jevons and Bec Whiting Last year, we brought a piano to life, and serenaded you with it. This year, the piano’s gone AWOL. A fresh look at cabaret presented by two girls who really can’t play a set of keys. So, we’ve found some intimate instruments to cruelly misuse for your entertainment. Disclaimer: we harmed many violins in the making of this piece. Shadows Wed 6, 8:30pm | Fri 8, 9:15pm | Mon 11, 8:35pm | Tues 12, 7.45pm Fri 15, 7:10pm (45 mins) The Quirk $5 Written by Tara Calaby, Directed by Ephiny Gale, Performed by Maria Roitman, Victoria Brown and Lauren O’Dwyer The Black Death. The Blitz. The clone conflict. So many dead. Survival never comes free, and blame is always subjective. Italy, 1630, the full force of the plague: Catherina has tried to save her family, but doing so has cost her everything. London, 1941, a bomb shelter: Irene’s husband is off at war, but their love story is far from conventional. Melbourne, the future: the clones have malfunctioned, and Regan doesn’t know who she can trust–perhaps not even herself. These women are still alive–for now–and some confessions can only come out of the shadows. Shakespeare Night 2.0 Sat 9, 6:30pm–10:30pm (doors open from 6pm) The HUB $8 Curated by Alex Beyer and Ryan Miller Following last year’s successful event, The Monash Shakespeare Company is returning again with Shakespeare Night 2.0, another evening full of Shakespeare-themed events and performances. Heart beats in time to the crunch of vengeful footsteps in the snow. We meet our ends at the hands of our captors. Voiceless are we, daughters us both. The Skeleton Women is a new theatrical work exploring life, death, entrapment, love, murder and betrayal in the Inuit folktale The Skeleton Woman and the legend of Icelandic murderess Agnes Magnúsdóttir. Interspersed with original music, The Skeleton Women is a sometimes chilling, at other times heartening intermingling of two stories that both begin with a wilful murder: the making of infamous legends. Stories of Us Mon 4, 6:10pm | Tues 5, 9:15pm | Wed 6, 9:25pm | Fri 8, 6:20pm Wed 13, 6pm (25 mins) The Helix $5 Written and directed by Chris Edwards, featuring a rotating cast which includes Ariadne Sgouros, James Malcher, Joseph Brown, Jordan Broadway, Sarah Branton, Niamh Hassett, Natesha Somasundaram and Mark Paguio Two performers are each handed a script as they walk on stage. In it lies the complete history of a relationship–only they don’t know whose relationship, as they’ve never seen the script before. They have no idea where they are going; only that it will take them from meet-cute to end-ugly, or maybe the other way around. There are two sides to every story, and every relationship has a lifetime worth. Well maybe not literally a lifetime, but there are definitely quite a few. Like twelve, maybe. Regardless, in the end they are the Stories of Us. Same smelly and slightly soiled seats. Same ticket inspector ready to devour your soul. Same person listening to Gangnam Style without their earphones. Except… it’s not. This carriage is hijacked and you might have to–heaven forbid–TALK to the people around you. It’s pure madness! We’re bringing the “public” back to public transport. A cabaret ride filled with all of the song, dance and anecdotal probing that can turn this train off its rails. If you can’t stand ordinary train rides, we get it. The boys soon discover that fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and lose their way. Come and follow the story of two boys following a dream with a night of laughing, weeping, and obnoxiously loud singing. Tuck in the Corners Wed 13, 8pm | Thurs 14, 7:30pm | Fri 15, 9:25pm (30 mins) The Quirk $5 Written and directed by Joseph Brown, Performed by Nicola Grear and Jonny Dutaillis The play tells the story of a young couple whose relationship has disintegrated. In the midst of the final removal of the other from each of their lives, questions emerge; questions of infidelity, the purpose of the physical and the real motives of loving someone. The show considers the language we use and the words with which we choose to represent ourselves. The true intent of a person is not in the words they use, but how much of themselves they put into those words. The audience will witness the piece twice, with the actors swapping roles. Wheelchair Access Please note: The Quirk and The Muse do not have wheelchair access. All other Container Festival venues do have wheelchair access. Sensitive Content With a festival that encourages the creation of new challenging work, there may be content that some viewers could find difficult. We encourage audiences to read the blurbs in the program carefully and use their discretion when booking for events. Please email us on msa-must@monash.edu or call 9905 8173 if you have concerns, or speak to the volunteers at the festival. Booking—Terms and Conditions With some noted exclusions (please consult The Container Festival program) audience members must book for all events they wish to attend, even if they have purchased a Festival Pass or Day Pass. Bookings close five minutes before an event’s start time. • If a Festival Pass or Day Pass is being used for payment, the pass holder’s photo ID may be requested in order to place a booking. • To attend pre-booked events in containers or The Garland, audience members must wait in the designated waiting area in the festival HUB at least five minutes before the event’s start time. Please DO NOT go directly to any venues other than the HUB. • Online booking requests via: containerfestivalbookings@gmail.com are only available to Festival Pass and Day Pass holders, and must be made at least 48 hours in advance of the requested event. The success of these requests is not absolutely guaranteed; audience members will receive an emailed reply stating whether or not their booking request was successful. • Refunds may only be issued if an event has been cancelled, and are generally only available for individual ticket purchases (not for Festival Passes or Day Passes). • Please read event descriptions carefully and make enquiries as outlined above if you would like further information on sensi- tive content. Audience members are asked to use discretion when booking for and attending events. • Intoxicated patrons may be refused entry to any part of the festival. • Food and beverages are not permitted inside the containers. For your comfort Keeping warm There will be a few blankets in each container to help keep you warm and a few spares at The HUB should you need them. We recommend wearing layers to The Container Festival, particularly if you will be attending a few venues. A warm coat that you can wear in a container and remove in The HUB while you have a dance, would be ideal. Strobe Lighting Please note that when strobe lighting will be used in a performance, this is mentioned under the performance blurb in the program. Monash University’s new smoking policy—designated areas only From 28 July 2014, you cannot smoke on any Monash campus, except for at designated smoking points. Smoking is also prohibited in all Monash buildings and vehicles. We’ve included a map so you can check out the point closest to The HUB. It’s near the permaculture garden, west of the campus centre. By 2016, Monash will be entirely smoke-free. By moving towards a smoke-free campus, Monash is supporting the health of students, staff, contractors and visitors. Transitioning to a smoke-free campus requires respect for others– both non-smokers and smokers. After 28 July, you are free to respectfully and politely remind smokers that they must only smoke at designated smoking points. Monash actively supports staff and students who wish to quit or reduce their smoking through a range of services.
