Tonight we honor three special individuals, who in their own ways remind me of Abraham. According to a midrash or biblical interpretation, the patriarch’s father Terach was an idol salesman. One
day he left Abraham in charge of his shop. Abraham, who was thirteen years old, took a stick and
smashed all of the statues except for the largest one; into this one’s hand he placed the stick. When
Terach returned, he was furious about the mess! When he questioned his son, Abraham replied, “The
idols had an argument about which one of them was the best. The biggest idol declared that he was
number one, and he took the stick and destroyed all of the others.” “You’re lying,” Terach yelled at
his child. “You know that these idols are made of stone or wood, and that they cannot move or talk
or do anything!” “If they are as you say,” Abraham responded, “then why do you worship them?!”
For me, this story exemplifies why God chose Abraham to be the first Jew. Our patriarch knew that
he did not have to blindly accept the status quo. Abraham knew that there must be a better way to
find God and to understand the world than worshipping idols. He was not afraid to explore new
possibilities, even if it involved risks and dissent from those who liked things just the way they were.
As Jews we follow Abraham’s example, trying our best to improve life as we know it. Each of tonight’s
special guests does as well, and I am thrilled that we are honoring them.
David I. Green is one of my favorite idol smashers. Taking the reins of MJC at a challenging moment,
he helped to usher in stability and a renewed spirit. Through adversity, he never lost sight of the fact
that MJC is a great congregation. He did not accept the status quo, that this community is destined
to wither amidst discord and apathy. I will always be grateful to David, for easing my transition at
MJC. I enjoyed our weekly meetings, casual conversations, and bimah chats. His recurring question,
“Rabbi, what are you solving for?” has kept me focused on the big picture in leading the congregation.
Ruth Nadler and her family have supported MJC since its inception. Tragically, Ruth’s sister Ilene
passed away at a very young age. Others might have become bitter, turning their backs on organized
religion and on God. This was not Ruth’s way. Instead, she smashed the idol of bitterness, redoubling
her commitment to the synagogue and to Jewish life. Her leadership of Sisterhood sets an example
for all of us. In serving with her on the Executive Board, I was impressed with her kind ways and
also her quiet strength. Ruth’s smile, sense of humor, love of family and passion for Jewish life are all
contagious.
Dr. Andrew Elkwood is one of the state’s top reconstructive surgeons. Both locally and abroad, he
partners with other doctors to provide highly specialized surgical care for underprivileged children.
Andrew smashes the idol of despair, giving hope to families scarred by physical defect or by violence.
I was honored to officiate at his daughter Lily’s Bat Mitzvah in November, and I was glad to get to
know Andrew better in preparing for that special moment in his life.
I wish a hearty mazel tov to David, Ruth and Andrew and to their families. May they continue to
smash idols by doing acts of chesed (kindness) and tikkun olam (fixing the world). May they continue
to inspire us, and with them may we all go from strength to strength!
Shalom,
Rabbi Michael Pont

Dear MJC Family:
Every two years, we gather on a night in June to celebrate and recognize the stars of
our congregation. This year, those shining stars are David Green, Ruth Nadler and
Dr. Andrew Elkwood. I have had the pleasure of working with the three of them over
the last several years.
David Green aka Thing One and I (Thing Two) had the pleasure of serving on the
Executive Committee together for three years. During David’s tenure as EVP and
President, he guided our synagogue through difficult financial times and the change
in rabbinical leadership. Somehow or another, he was always able to remain calm,
even tempered, and for the most part had a smile while dealing with the ups and
downs of being a congregational president. One of David’s favorite expressions is
“Spot on!” I can tell, you, he was “spot on” in accomplishing so much as our president
and he truly deserves tonight’s recognition.
Everyone talks about Ruth and her family’s wonderful history here at MJC. But, for
me, I would rather talk about the two years that we sat next to each other at the front
of the room on the last Thursday of every month. We are very lucky that there was not
a tape recorder between the two of us as we made jokes, sarcastic remarks, and had
quite a few laughs that, to this day, most people have no idea why we were laughing.
On a serious side, we all are thankful for Ruth’s dedication and loyalty to the MJC
Sisterhood, Board of Trustees and the congregation. She is truly the energizer bunny
when it comes to volunteering for our synagogue.
My first opportunity to meet Dr. Andrew Elkwood was three years ago when we
served on the Rabbi Search Committee. I quickly found why David had recommended
placing Andy on the committee. His attention to detail, insight and humor helped
make long nights seem like short evenings. As a fellow healthcare professional, I
marvel at the wonderful surgical procedures that Dr. Elkwood has voluntarily
performed on underprivileged children throughout the world.
Mazel tov to David, Ruth and Andy on a well-deserved honor.
Sincerely,
Jay Solomon
President

Judaism teaches us the power, value and preciousness of L’Dor V’Dor (from generation to
generation) and in this case from President to President, a time-honored tradition. Personally I am very humbled to have served as the President of MJC and to accept the honor that
has been bestowed upon me. MJC has established a proud and rich community heritage of
42 wonderful years and continues to embark on new and exciting journeys each year.
Journeys like ours only happen when great communities come together. This year’s Journal
and Gala mark not only another milestone for MJC in that Journey, but honors two astonishing and beautiful individuals, congregants and most of all friends; Ruth Nadler and Dr.
Andy Elkwood. Their passion for MJC, Judaism and helping all those around them is simply amazing and infectious. We are fortunate to be blessed by all the acts of loving kindness
that they generously do for our congregation and our community.
It cannot go without saying; these events take on a life of their own. Direction, passion and
life for this year come directly from our very own Committee Chairs Mindy and Jeff Wolf
and Ronnie Levy. You have surrounded us with love, care and an incredible amount of
hard work. Thank you and your extended team and Yasher Koach!
Throughout the last few years I have been privileged to work with so many great volunteers, board members, our staff, the Nursery and Hebrew School. Not to mention, the
special partnership with Rabbi Pont, Bonnie Komito and Jay Solomon. The team spirit that
came through every day will be cherished forever.
To my wife Nadine, we made MJC our home 21+ years ago and I appreciate your unwavering support; you are amazing! To my sons Mitchell and Jayson, you are simply reason
enough to wake up every day and realize what’s important. You are our life and you make
us so proud, every day! We can only hope that we have raised you half as well as our parents did. Thank you Dad, Mom, Norman and Myra.
To the entire MJC Community and to all those fortunate enough to support us, I thank you
all for this incredible honor. May our doors always grow wider and hearts even fonder to
ensure that our journey will continue from generation to generation.
B’Shalom,
David I Green

Dear Friends,
It has been a pleasure being a part of the Marlboro Jewish Center community since its
inception in 1970. My involvement in many different aspects of the synagogue has given me
a great appreciation of Jewish heritage as well as the importance of living a Jewish life in and
out of my home.
I am delighted to be sharing this evening with two special people, David Green and Andy
Elkwood, who I am proud to call my friends. David and Andy have devoted their time to
the synagogue as well as the community at large. They have contributed much to the success
of Marlboro Jewish Center during the past few years as a conservative synagogue that truly
cares about their members in addition to providing for those outside of our home in places
like Israel. Both men have certainly helped to make a difference in many meaningful ways.
Throughout the years, I have worked with many dedicated volunteers at MJC who are
committed to our congregation. I am especially grateful to the hard working Journal
Committee chair people and members. These individuals have given so much of their
precious time to our shul and in making tonight’s Journal Dinner Dance a huge success.
Working with the clergy, the entire staff in both the Synagogue and Chai Buildings, the PreSchool and Hebrew School teachers and administrators, and the maintenance division has
always been easy for me. Everyone contributes from their own area of expertise in order to
have things run smoothly. My experience has always been a positive one and all of their hard
work is greatly appreciated.
Words cannot describe how much I am thankful for the love and guidance that my family
has given to me. My dedicated parents, Sylvia and Edward Fleischer, have always shown
me how important it is to be part of a Jewish community by being an involved member and
volunteer of Marlboro Jewish Center. My wonderful husband, Steven, and my awesome
children, Lauren and Matthew have stood by me every step of the way along this journey. To
my extended family and friends, I am very lucky to have your support and encouragement
as well.
To everyone who has contributed to the Journal Dinner Dance either by being here tonight
or sending their good wishes to the journal, I am thrilled to be sharing this evening with you.
Looking forward to celebrating many more simchas together.
L’Chaim,
Ruth Nadler

Fellow Congregants,
Thank you so much for this honor, I am truly touched and humbled by its bestowal. Composing this letter has given me pause for thought, and both oddly and unexpectedly, it has
brought up mixed emotions.
Firstly, I am honored and humbled to be included in such an esteemed group with my cohonorees, Ruth Nadler and David Green. Ruth is a very close personal friend, so dedicated
to our synagogue, and a “mensch” in every sense of the word. She is like another sister to
me and my family. I am proud to consider David a friend of many years, and am so grateful
for his tireless and steadfast leadership of our congregation. ..Congratulations to both of you.
Why do I have mixed feelings about this award? Upon great reflection, I realize that it puts
two of my core beliefs at odds. By way of background, the genesis for my being afforded
this honor has to do with my work as a reconstructive surgeon. I am very involved in treating deformities and injuries in children; I recently traveled to Jerusalem to treat children in
East Jerusalem, particularly Muslim children. It is my strong belief that treating the sick …
especially children should be blind to politics and outside influences. I am sure that many of
those reading this letter, would think that it is from these issues that my inner stirrings arise,
that is not the case. To me the above is a given, an absolute moral imperative.
Our tradition teaches us that the highest form of giving is “double blind” Tzedaka. Obviously, that is logistically impossible in caring for a patient. I do feel, however, that one should
hold as close to that ideal as possible. I feel that any good physician should actively avoid
recognition for pro bono work; I have always gleaned an extra bit of silent self-satisfaction
by doing so. Whereas, I am so deeply honored by this award it robs me of some anonymity. The controversy? We as Jews believe in Tikkun Olam, fixing the world piece by piece.
As a father, one of Caryn and my, firms beliefs is that our children learn by example, not by
lecture…by deeds, not by words. I think that philosophy extends to our community as well.
How can we lead by example if our deeds go silent and uncovered? That is the controversy.
I don’t want his letter to become a treatise in philosophy, but I would like to further bolster
my point. Upon setting out on my trip to Israel, I thought that what I was doing was unique;
nothing could be further from the truth. I toured a few medical institutions including Hadassah Hospital and was amazed to see how many Arabic children were patients, most of
them treated by Jewish Israeli physicians and staff. They carry out this Mitzvah on a daily
basis. I dedicate this award to my Israeli surgical colleagues.
Thank you.
Dr. Andrew Elkwood

A favorite saying of the Rabbis of Yavneh was, “I am God’s creature and others are God’s
creatures. My work is in town, theirs is in the country, I rise early to do my work, they rise
early for theirs. They do not presume to do my work, and I do not presume to do theirs.
Can you say that I do much and they do less: We have learned one may do little or a lot; it is
all the same as long as we direct our heart to heaven.” - Babylonian Talmud, Berakhot, 17a
This Journal and the Gala Dinner Dance we are celebrating tonight signifies the work of the
community, made up of individuals and teams that bind together to direct their hearts to
heaven on behalf of the traditions that we hold sacred. Each member of the Journal Gala
Committee, each congregant, each honoree, each participant and each business or family that
placed an ad has strengthened MJC in our effort to provide a meaningful Jewish connection
within the community.
As we honor David I. Green, who served as President from 2010-2012, I add my personal
thanks for two years working as partners. David’s tenure was characterized by his team
building approach, strategic vision, and his uncanny problem solving ability. I can hear him
whispering (or shouting) in my ear, “what are we solving for?” David keeps his eye on all
the balls in the air while they are moving at full speed, and yet can step back and say, “thanks
team, spot on!” If there was a theme or a trademark that characterized this time, it was B’
Yachad – which means together and became the name of MJC’s strategic planning initiative.
David is now part of the team of distinguished Past Presidents and we wish him and his
family well in all their new ventures.
Mazel Tov to Ruth Nadler, recipient of the treasured Ohev Shalom Award, for her lifelong
service and dedication to MJC. Ruth personifies L’Dor V’Dor, from generation to generation.
Everyone knows that her parents, Sylvia and Ed Fleischer were Founding Members and Past
Presidents of MJC, so it’s no surprise that she has spent her life here. But the reason that she
is being honored is that she has devoted her life to the congregation with a full heart. In her
many roles as volunteer, committee member, Sisterhood President, Trustee and Officer, she
is always accessible, gracious and focused on the needs of the shul. Ruth is treasured by her
friends and family, as well as by her extended MJC mishpocha.
Yasher Koach to Dr. Andrew Elkwood for receiving the Humanitarian Award. Andy’s work
prohibits him from being visible in the day to day life of the congregation, but it is for the
work of his heart that he is recognized this evening. He gives of his time and skill to provide
surgical care for children and adults whose lives have been torn apart by suffering. He
demonstrates a sense of moral dedication that embodies the spirit of our tradition, for “he
who saves one life, saves the world,” and Andy’s work brings smiles and healing to those who
can’t ask for help on their own.
The respect and honor granted to David, Ruth and Andy this evening brings much needed
revenue to MJC, and equally important, allows us all the opportunity to share in a meaningful
connection to the synagogue and the community at large. We also appreciate the honorees’
families and friends for sharing in this celebration. Amid the journal ads, the roses, the
sumptuous dinner and dancing, there is a greater purpose that enables us all together, B’
Yachad, to direct our hearts to heaven.
