Through an agreement forged with the City of Birmingham, the Southwestern Athletic Conference staged its first championship game at historic Legion Field. On Saturday, December 11, 1999, the Jackson State University Tigers (East Champion) and the Southern University Jaguars (West Champion) kicked off the inaugural Southwestern Athletic Conference Football Championship game. From the Western Division, Grambling State has earned seven trips to the title game – the most of any SWAC school – and holds a 6-1 record in the championship game. Southern has played in five title games holding a 3-2 record, Arkansas-Pine Bluff has two appearances, and Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern each have one appearance Alabama A&M has represented the Eastern Division on six occasions and holds a 1-5 record. Alabama State is 1-3 in four appearances, while Jackson State is 1-4. In a thriller, Southern responded from an early deficit to capture a 31-30 win. Mississippi Valley State is the only conference member to have never appeared in the SWAC Championship Game. In 16 years of the SWAC Championship game, nine of the 10 conference schools have played for the title. In all, the Western Division is 12-4 over the Eastern Division and won six straight from 2008-2013. Larkin Athletics Director: Dr. Obadiah Simmons Jr. (interim) - Grambling State will make its eighth appearance in the Southwestern Athletic Conference football championship game, which is the most in the event’s history. Grambling State boasts a 6-1 record in its prior seven trips, with the Tigers’ last trip (2011) resulting in a 16-15 win over Alabama A&M. - Grambling State’s first championship game crown came in 2000 with a 13-6 win over Alabama A&M. This kicked off a run of three straight titles for the Tigers. - Prior to the SWAC Football Championship game, Grambling State’s last conference title occured in 1994, when they shared it with this year’s SWAC Championship Game opponent Alcorn State. - Grambling State quarterback Johnathan Williams (2015 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year) leads the nation with 38 touchdown scores. He has thrown for 2,910 yards this season. - Grambling State may boast the most explosive and effective quick-strike offense in the nation. Despite ranked third to last in the nation (FCS) when it comes to time of possession among teams, Grambling State scored 43.2 points a game this year, which puts them No. 4 in the nation. - Grambling is only the second team in SWAC conference play history to amass a perfect record against in-conference opponents. The first team to do it was the 2011 incarnation of the Grambling State Tigers. - Grambling State ranks sixth overall in sacks with 36. Perhaps more impressively, the Tigers have three players with at least six sacks this season. - Grambling State coach Broderick Fobbs has amassed a sparkling 16-2 record against conference opponents since taking the reins of the Tigers in 2014. - Grambling State is tied for third in tackles per loss per game (9.6). Founded: 1871 Enrollment: 3,994 Nickname: Braves Colors: Purple and Gold Stadium: Jack Spinks Stadium (22,500) Chancellor: Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. - Alcorn State will make its second appearance in the Southwestern Athletic Conference football championship game. The defending champion Braves defeated Southern 38-24 in 2014 to claim the first SWAC Football Championship in school history. - Before the football championship game, Alcorn State’s last SWAC Conference Championship came in 1994, where they were co-champions with their opponent in the 2015 SWAC Football Championship Game, Grambling State University. Overall, Alcorn State has won eight conference championships, with seven of them coming pre-championship game era. - Alcorn State currently fields the top-ranked pass defense in the nation, as the Braves only allow an average of 104.1 yards through the air. The Braves are one of two teams in the nation that have allowed less than 100 completed passes this year. Alcorn State has given up 89 completions, which ranks No. 2 in the nation. Alcorn State is the first SWAC team since the 2011 Jackson State Tigers to lead the nation in passing defense. Alcorn State is also the only SWAC school to have led the nation in that category more than once, having led the nation in pass defense in 1987. - If Alcorn State is successful in defeating Grambling State in the SWAC Football Championship game, the Braves will be only the second team to repeat as champion in the game’s history. The only team to do that thus far? Grambling State University, which won three straight from 2000-2002. - Senior quarterback John Gibbs Jr. could become only the second player to win SWAC Championship Game MVP honors in the history of the contest. Former Grambling QB Bruce Eugene is the only player to have twice won game MVP honors. - Alcorn State’s rushing attack ranks No. 4 in the nation, as they average a smidge under 300 yards a contest. - Alcorn State’s defense stops a lot of plays before they begin, as they are third in the nation in team tackles for loss at 9.6 per game. 2015 TEAM HIGHS Rushes Yards Rushing Yards Per Rush TD Rushes Pass attempts Pass completions Yards Passing Yards Per Pass TD Passes Total Plays Total Offense Yards Per Play Points Sacks By First Downs Penalties Penalty Yards Turnovers Interceptions By Punts Punting Avg Long Punt Punts inside 20 Long Punt Return 56 500 10.8 6 35 26 305 12.6 3 91 555 10.7 65 8 27 15 141 4 2 8 52.5 77 3 42 vs Grambling State (Oct 17, 2015) vs Alabama A&M (Nov 21, 2015) at Southern (Oct 31, 2015) vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Oct 03, 2015) vs Grambling State (Oct 17, 2015) at Alabama State (Sep 12, 2015) at Alabama State (Sep 12, 2015) vs Concordia (Sep 26, 2015) vs Concordia (Sep 26, 2015) vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Oct 03, 2015) vs Grambling State (Oct 17, 2015) at Southern (Oct 31, 2015) at Southern (Oct 31, 2015) at Texas Southern (Nov 14, 2015) vs Mississippi Valley (Sep 19, 2015) vs Concordia (Sep 26, 2015) vs Alabama A&M (Nov 21, 2015) vs Grambling State (Oct 17, 2015) at Alabama State (Sep 12, 2015) at Alabama State (Sep 12, 2015) vs Mississippi Valley (Sep 19, 2015) at Southern (Oct 31, 2015) at Jackson State (Nov 28, 2015) vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Oct 03, 2015) at Georgia Tech (Sep 03, 2015) vs Concordia (Sep 26, 2015) vs Concordia (Sep 26, 2015) vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Oct 03, 2015) at Texas Southern (Nov 14, 2015) 2015 TEAM HIGHS Rushes Yards Rushing Yards Per Rush TD Rushes Pass attempts Pass completions Yards Passing Yards Per Pass TD Passes Total Plays Total Offense Yards Per Play Points Sacks By First Downs Penalties Penalty Yards Turnovers Interceptions By Punts Punting Avg Long Punt Punts inside 20 Long Punt Return 51 308 8.4 4 47 30 429 13.0 6 90 568 7.8 70 5 30 12 139 7 3 9 46.2 57 4 63 vs Mississippi Valley (Oct 24, 2015) vs Mississippi Valley (Oct 24, 2015) at Alcorn State (Oct 17, 2015) vs Mississippi Valley (Oct 24, 2015) vs Bethune Cookman (Sep 12, 2015) vs Bethune Cookman (Sep 12, 2015) at Prairie View (Sep 26, 2015) at Prairie View (Sep 26, 2015) at Prairie View (Sep 26, 2015) vs Bethune Cookman (Sep 12, 2015) vs Mississippi Valley (Oct 24, 2015) at Jackson State (Oct.03, 2015) at Prairie View (Sep 26, 2015) vs Bethune Cookman (Sep 12, 2015) at Jackson State (Oct.03, 2015) vs Mississippi Valley (Oct 24, 2015) vs Bethune Cookman (Sep 12, 2015) at Alabama State (Sep 19, 2015) at Prairie View (Sep 26, 2015) vs Bethune Cookman (Sep 12, 2015) vs Mississippi Valley (Oct 24, 2015) at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Nov 14, 2015) at California (Sep 05, 2015) at Alabama State (Sep 19, 2015) vs Southern (Nov 28, 2015) at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Nov 14, 2015) vs Alabama A&M (Oct 10, 2015) HONOR THE HERITAGE • FOUNDED 1920 • 12 PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAMERS • 15 COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAMERS Alcorn State Braves QB, John Gibbs Jr. Booker T.
