PANDAN LEAVES (pandanus amaryllifolius) AS A NATURAL RATS OR MICE REPELLENT INTRODUCTION : Mice or rat infestation is a problem prevalent in a large number of Malaysia homes and restaurants. The two common types of rodents found in Malaysia are the house mouse (Mus domesticus) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus). OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY : The objective of this research is to investigate whether pandan extracts within the leaves of P. amaryllifolius are effective repellent on rats or mice as cockroaches. Using plant material to control pests may alleviate the burden of heavy reliance on synthetic pesticides as both the public and regulators recognize the environment and human health risks associated with chemical pesticides. RESULT : METHOD OF RESEARCH : •PART 1 : • Extracting essential oils and chemicals using acetone and also by aqueous extraction. •PART 2 : • Observing repellency response of domestic pet mice to the aroma in pandan extracts. REPELLENCY ASSAY In the repellency test , the effectiveness of each candidate extract was expressed in terms of the excess proportion of mouse that is attracted to the targeted area. CONCLUSION : Although both attractive and repellent compounds are present in the plant, it is likely that the proportion of attractive components in mature pandan leaves outweighs that of its repellent counterparts. Hence, bunches of pandan leaves might not repel bigger pests such as mice or rats since the repellent volatile compounds in the leaves might not be concentrated enough to repel rats or mice.
