Temple Beth Am October 20 Tishri/Cheshvan 5773 2250 Central Blvd. Jupiter, FL 33458 Published Monthly (561) 747-1109 Issue No. 155 The Midrash tells of Rabbi Joshua ben Levi, who in a visit to Rome saw marble pillars covered with sheets, so they wouldn't crack with the heat, nor freeze from the cold. He also saw a poor person with only a reed mat under him and a reed mat over him (Pesikta de-Rav Kahana 9:1). One doesn't need to go back in time to 2nd Century Rome to find buildings and other possessions that are treated better than human beings. One look out of our own window will reveal a similar illogical picture. On Rosh Hashanah I told you about my family’s experience with the Food Stamp Challenge. For one week, Gali, Maya, Ben and I (Yoni was exempt) lived on a family budget of food stamps recipients. $128.11 for ALL the food for the four of us for a week ($1.57 a meal). We took on the challenge because we felt that it is important for us and for our children to have a better understanding of hunger and poverty in America. With 1 out of 5 adults in the US receiving food stamps subsidies, this is a reality that we cannot ignore. We cannot stand idly by when 1 in 4 children (17 million) under the age of 18 in the U.S. is going to bed hungry each night. Our state, Florida, is a mong the top 5 states with the highest rates of children in households without consistent access to food. For us, it was a tough and interesting week that taught us more valuable lessons than we expected. We learned that it is very hard to keep a balanced and healthy diet on this budget and that is probably one of the reasons why lower income families that depend on food stamps over a prolonged period of time also suffer from obesity. Planning meals on such a limited budget requires very much time and effort and cooking skills, and one cannot afford to be a picky eater. Sadly, it is nearly impossible to take pleasure in the simple joys of having meals with friends and extended family, having people over or meeting up at restaurants. You can read more about my own family’s Food Stamp Challenge in my blog www.onejewishdad.com Here at Temple Beth Am we run many programs that help the poor and feed the hungry. Our Yom Kippur food drive (Project Isaiah) provides hundreds of pounds of valuable nutrition to those who come to the JFCS food pantry. We collected food and bagged rice for the local North County Food Pantry. We serve dinners at St. George’s soup kitchen and some of our congregants help deliver meals to the home-bound and the elderly through Morse Life. We are involved with Family Promise and help feed and take care of the homeless. As a rabbi I am very proud of all of our congregational efforts. As Jews it is our obligation to do all these things. Now I am inviting you to take our tzedaka efforts to another level. Please join my family and me in a congregational Food Stamp Challenge, for one week, when your schedule allows it in the month of November, before Thanksgiving. The main lesson from our challenge was that as much as we knew about hunger, we were not able to appreciate the pain, frustration and the feeling of worthlessness it brings about. It was truly a humbling and eye opening experience. Before we decide how we want to help in alleviating the misery of hunger, we have to better understand it. The Food Stamp Challenge has five simple guidelines: 1. Each person should spend a set amount for food and beverages during the Challenge week. That amount is $4.57 per person per day for all food and beverage. 2. All food purchased and eaten during the Challenge week, including fast food and dining out, must be included in the total spending. 3. During the Challenge, only eat food that you purchase for the project. Do not eat food that you already own (this does not include spices and condiments). 4. Avoid accepting free food from friends, family, or at work, including at receptions, briefings, or other events where food is served. 5. Keep track of receipts on food spending and take note of your experiences throughout the week. As we ease out of the Jewish High Holy Days, with their message of mercy and compassion, let us embrace this challenge and try and experience, in a limited form, the pain of so many of our fellow Americans. Experience and familiarity bring about true empathy. And only when we truly understand the problem, will we be able to bring about change. Although the preparations for High Holy Day observances are more organized and run smoother at TBA than any other Temple I know of (thanks in large part to Debbie Baseman’s hard work and amazing dedication), this year I admit that I’ve been nervous. Back in the August Scribe, Rabbi Alon told us about a new High Holy Day initiative for TBA: inviting all unaffiliated Jews to join us for evening Services at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur at no charge. As a congregation we pride ourselves for being the warm and welcoming heart of Judaism in northern Palm Beach County. We even say so right in our mission statement. At this season, being truly warm and welcoming means more than smiling and saying “L’shanah tovah.” It means providing all Jews with a place to pray together for the New Year. I’m very pleased to tell you that the community’s response to this initiative has been overwhelming. We issued over 200 tickets, mostly to folks who would not have attended any High Holy Day observance this year if we hadn’t opened our doors to them. For many of them, this was their first interaction with Temple Beth Am so it was very important for us to make them feel wanted and welcomed. Despite the fact that the phones were ringing off the hook, both Debbie and Margot Hauser were unfailingly friendly and helpful. They both went to great lengths to give all the callers the attention and time they needed. They made each caller feel special. Judging from the feedback of our members, I am confident that our High Holy Day guests will be greeted warmly and have a wonderful holiday experience at TBA. But if we are truly the warm and welcoming heart of Jewish life in northern Palm Beach County, these efforts shouldn’t end at the conclusion of the Yom Kippur Service. To sincerely welcome our guests to be part of the TBA family, we should keep in touch, even after the holidays are over. That’s why I’m asking for your help. Can you commit to making a few phone calls in the first two weeks of October? These are easy, feel-good calls. We are NOT asking for money. We are NOT recruiting members. As good hosts, we are just calling our High Holy Day guests to thank them for joining us to bring in the New Year. Warm and friendly TBA members needed! If you can help make a few phone calls to our High Holy Day guests, please email Carol Safran csafran@templebetham.com This will be a wonderful way to start the New Year! I hope to get lots of emails. Thank you! Temple Beth Am 3 October 2012 CANTOR TANYA GREENBLATT This year’s Friday Night LIVE series is new and exciting. Over the years, our TBA family has built relationships with some of the top Jewish musicians, and we’re about to expand that list. This year we welcome a new artist each and every month of the series, and their varied styles and talents promise something for everyone. On October 12th, Todd Herzog will join us for our season opening Friday Night LIVE Service. Todd’s original music is sensitive, nuanced, and exciting. I listened to his CD in my car when he first sent it, and I haven’t taken it out since! He writes songs in English with Jewish themes and messages that could easily be heard on the radio. His liturgical settings of familiar prayers are fun, catchy and will have everyone singing along. Check him out on the Temple Beth Am website at www.templebetham.com. Click on the Special Event Link on our home and hear some of the songs he’ll share with us this month. Once you get that taste of his incredible talent, you might want to visit his website at www.toddherzog.com. Be sure to listen to my favorites, “Tree of Life” and “Shalom Aleichem/Calling All Angels”. I can’t wait to hear what your favorites are! Here’s a preview of the rest of the season: Noah Aronson, who will be here November 9th, is one of the most popular young composers and performers on the Jewish music scene today. Along with having an incredible voice, he writes complex, sophisticated music that has universal appeal. We’ve started using his version of the Bar’chu, “Am I Awake”, in Services, and I love the way it draws the congregation together and prepares us to stand before God. If you can’t wait, check him out at www.noaharonson.com. On December 14th we’ll welcome back the incredible string quartet we heard on Yom Kippur, for a special Service of chamber music. Lovers of classical and contemporary music will be moved by this unique Service. On January 11th our Friday Night LIVE Service will turn to Jazz, led by Mark Bloom. This talented singer and Jazz musician will transform our familiar Shabbat melodies, opening up a new experience through Jazz. You can get a taste of his style and charismatic presence at www.markbloom.com. February’s Friday Night LIVE is part of our Shabbaton weekend, February 8th and 9th. Dan Nichols will be here for a rousing, rocking Service and will stay with us on Saturday for our Shabbat in Nature Shabbaton, leading us in song throughout the day and treating us to an awesome concert. Anyone who has been to a Reform camp or Youth Group event knows Dan’s contagious personality and music. Check him out at www.jewishrock.com if you aren’t already familiar with this rock star of the Jewish world! Our season will conclude with Beth Schafer on March 8th. I love her music and I know you will, too. We already sing her Sh’ma often on Friday nights, and you heard her Esa Einai on Rosh Hashanah and her Sh’ma Koleinu at the end of our Yom Kippur Services. Along with her incredible, sensitive artistry, fun personality and great music, she is on the cutting edge of worship innovation and will share some new elements of worship with us. You can get to know her at www.bethschafer.com. Be sure to check back to the Temple Beth Am website often for updates and to learn some of the new music we’ll hear in Services from these amazing artists. Temple Beth Am 6 October 2012 Temple Beth Am 7 October 2012 MEN’S CLUB Jerry Holinstat It is with great pleasure that the Men’s Club wishes the entire Congregation L’Shanah Tovah, a happy and healthy New Year to all. Here’s what’s going to occur in the near future: Sunday, September 30th: Sukkah Construction: Want to have fun and meet some new people? Join us on Sunday, September 30th, at 8:30am at the Temple. Under the leadership of Paul Steidle and Mike Deakter, please pick up a hammer or screwdriver and take joy in the building of our Sukkah- a Sukkah that your children and grandchildren will be using. If you’re interested please contact Paul at 747-4369. Sunday, October 14th: Sukkah Take Down: What goes up must come down, so on Sunday, October 14th, at 8:30am we will be disassembling the Sukkah. Again, if you would like to join a great bunch of guys, and have a good time, please call Paul Steidle and sign up for this fun activity. Bring your screwdrivers as well. Saturday, October 20th: Temple DELI Dinner & Silent Auction: The Temple Beth Am Deli Dinner will be the REAL THING. We are having this Deli dinner catered by a Delray area deli. If you haven’t had a really delicious Corned Beef or Pastrami sandwich in a while, you’re in for a treat. This is the closest quality and taste that I’ve had since I left New York. We are serving hot dogs in a wrap, chopped liver, chicken, and a Deli Tray at each table. No one will be admitted without reservations. We are also having a Silent Auction at the Deli Dinner. One of the items to be auctioned off will be the FIRST PITCH thrown during SPRING TRAINING at Roger Dean Stadium. Now wouldn’t that be a terrific gift for your child or grandchild or even yourself? Please make your reservations at the Temple office with a check to Men’s Club for $15 per person. And if you wish to sit with your own group, make reservations for a table of 10 and make a check out for $150 and collect from your friends. We will also be supplying babysitting with dinner for $10 per child. They will be fed pizza, etc. There will be activities for the children after they eat. This is one dinner that you don’t want to miss!! Please see the flyer in this Scribe for details and reservations. Sunday, October 21st: League of Women Voters Breakfast: Our National and State elections are coming up two weeks after this event. We are very fortunate to have the Florida Director of the Educational branch of the League of Women Voters as our speaker. Her topic will be to explain all eleven of the Florida constitutional amendments. She will translate the amendments into lay terms so that we can understand what the politicians are asking us to vote on. Our speaker has agreed to open up the floor for questions. This Men’s Club Breakfast will most likely have a large attendance, so PLEASE make your reservations by sending your check to the Temple office early so that there will be enough food and tables. Costs are $10.00 for MC members and spouses, $12.00 for nonmembers. RSVP by Wednesday, 10/17. By the way, this is the first time that we have ever hosted the League of Women Voters at Temple Beth Am. Saturday, November 10th: Mystery Progressive Dinner IV: Please join us again for this exciting, and fun-filled evening! WHO’S COOKING? WHAT’S THE MENU? WHERE WILL WE EAT? WHY? JUST TO HAVE FUN!!! Please see the flyer in this Scribe for details and reservations. Before closing this Scribe article, I want to express my pride in the Men’s Club of Temple Beth Am, and to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the entire Temple family including our Religious School and Preschool. The Men’s Club members are tirelessly dedicated to partnering with all of the segments of our Temple. So, as their President, I ask you to please join me in thanking them for all of their efforts. Warmest regards, Jerry Holinstat Temple Beth Am 8 October 2012 Temple Beth Am 9 October 2012 Temple Beth Am 10 October 2012 SISTERHOOD SCOOP Lois Remick You Deserve to be treated like a Queen! There is no WHY to this statement! You either work outside the home, work at home, or work at both……and you deserve a day when you are treated like a Queen…more specifically Queen Elizabeth II. While Elizabeth (ok, so I take the liberty of calling her by her first name) takes “Afternoon Tea” at Buckingham Palace, you will have the American version called High Tea at the Hibel Museum. Both versions serve the same sweets, tea sandwiches and of course, English Tea. However, you will get something that Queen Elizabeth will not: a tour of the Hibel Museum. As you listen to the museum docents explain the art of Edna Hibel, you will enjoy the tastes of an English Afternoon Tea: it is local and easy to find, right on the campus of FAU in Abacoa. So….if you need a babysitter, get one; if you need a ride, make plans with a friend (who does drive) to attend, and if your husband wants to go….WONDERFUL! Please send your check with the bottom of the flyer below by October 22nd. For those of you who have never forgiven the British for burning Washington in the War of 1812…and are not into English teas, get over it, we probably should have never fought that war anyway!!!! We invite all Sisterhood members to attend our next meeting on Thursday, October 4 and learn about our activities for this coming year. HIGH TEA AT HIBEL MUSEUM Temple Beth Am 11 October 2012 Life in the W3 Howard Freedland A note to a few folks that helped out: Dear all, I want to take a moment and thank all of you, and your team members, for making our Welcome & Welcome Back open house a big success! I agree with many others that the rain may have helped us get more warmth out of the program. The program does not get off of the ground without a good amount of planning. Carol Safran and Maureen Cohen handled a large amount of the organizing, and I am grateful for their willingness and their help. Margot, Debbie, Sara and Carol Sleeper also played a large role in making sure that the marketing and planning came off properly. Thank you all for that! Bruce Cohen - Thank you for the running around to Costco, and for your dance-floor demolition skills! Joey Abrin-your table had a lot of life to it!. As the kids looked happy, it attracted many other parents to bring their kids over for a look. The positives to having a solid youth program are many. Furthermore, I cannot say enough about Rachel and Jax Smith, Jared White (I think it was Jared...might have been Seth), Zoey Chia and the rest of the JAMTY leaders that took prospective members on the tour of the building. They executed beautifully, and I thank you for working with me to experiment with this type of program. David Sherman, Yael Lawrence and Paula Deakter, thank you for doing what you do...the schools showed well, and I appreciate your planning with me. The scavenger hunt was enjoyed by kids of all ages. Carol Carswell, Harvey Silverman, Paul Steidle, Liz Cohn and Amy Russell - Thank you for representing your groups and events. It is surprising how much we have going on, and when people really see how easy it is to be involved in programs at TBA, they will have your groups to thank for the opportunities. John Marzina, Jared Bucker, Gideon Kroyter and Bruce Cohen ran the Men's Club Kitchen Patrol. If I missed anyone, please let me know, but I know that the entire congregation appreciates all that you guys do to provide for them. Lastly, a special thank you goes to Nava Viniar. Nava baked hundreds of Biscotti for us and they were fantastic!!! My goal was to provide a warm and welcoming program, and having home baked goodies from a special congregant is the best way that I know how. We all wanted to start the year out right. I feel that with this program, we did just that. Let's keep the momentum going! Thank you all. Howard Freedland The TBA Orientation Experience For New Families and Individuals to our Temple Mispacha (family) Thursday, October 18, 2012 7:00pm We would like to “officially” welcome our new Temple members and invite you to a program on October 18th at 7:00pm @ Temple Beth Am. This will be an introduction to Temple life, and will provide you an opportunity to meet several of our Temple leaders. If you are NOT a new family member to our Temple, but want to join us, please call me at 561-889-2735 and we will do our best to include you. Temple Beth Am 12 October 2012 CAMP COLEMAN CAMPING EXPERIENCE Liz Denmark Believe it or not, it is already that time of year to start thinking about what your children will do for summer vacation. Maybe you are considering sending your child to sleep-away camp? If you are anything like me, you may be spending a few sleepless nights asking yourself if you are making the right decision by even considering sending your child away to camp for a month. Some of you may know that my only child attended sleep away camp for the first time last summer in the beautiful mountains of Cleveland, Georgia at URJ Camp Coleman. What you may not know is that I also went to Coleman for the month as the camp photographer. A first for both of us! I could tell you here what a wonderful time Zoe had. I could tell you that she made new friends, learned new things, and tried new food, but I’m not. Instead, I’m going to tell you about my experience at camp in the hope it might help provide comfort to you if you are considering sending your child to Camp Coleman. Since I was part of the staff, I arrived at camp a week early to attend “staff week”. Initially I wasn’t sure why I needed to attend since I wasn’t a counselor or a unit head looking after the children; but, after all was said and done, I was happy that I went. I got “a behind the scenes” look at the wonderful training that the staff experienced. I felt relieved knowing that the training covered so many important topics besides just the usual policies and procedures, (and there are very strict policies in place for the staff). It is truly fabulous. I can’t begin to tell you how much time and effort goes into planning the seminars to help prepare the counselors for situations that may arise at camp. It is clear that the safety and well being of the campers comes first. Rabbi Michael Mellen facilitated a wonderful program on reinforcing positive behaviors, being a good role model, tips for better communication and teaching children about feeling good about themselves. You can read more about him here: http://www.michaelmellen.com/about/. As a parent, I feel confident knowing that the staff training gave the counselors the tools needed to assure that our children have a positive, safe, educational, meaningful and spiritual summer. As a staff member, I was pleasantly surprised to see the large number of dedicated employees that return to Camp Coleman year after year after year! I loved being at camp. One of my favorite things about camp was the traditional Shabbat walk, where everyone dresses in all white, and walks from their bunks across camp to the dining hall for a wonderful Shabbat dinner/services that are held outside in the beautiful chapel. Camp Director, Bobby Harris and his leadership staff certainly have a method to the madness. Even with the daily hustle and bustle that goes on behind the scenes; from the assistant directors, the unit heads, the staff specialists, the office staff, the nursing staff, the kitchen crew, to the drivers that pick up our children from the airport, there are many people collaborating to ensure that our children have an amazing summer! Camp Coleman has everything your child could want! There is a time for everything at Camp Coleman, time to be serious, time to pray, time to sing, time to rest, time to eat, time to learn, time to zip-across-the-zip-line, time for arts and crafts, and so much more! If you want your child to have a Jewish camping experience this summer, you’ll have the chance to learn more about Camp Coleman at Friday Night Services on November 9th. Cheryl Kornfeld will be at TBA that evening, representing the camp. Cheryl was a camper at Coleman before becoming a staff member, so she is a great source of information about the program. And, of course, feel free to contact me at lizdenmark@mac.com if you have any questions regarding the camp and why you should support your child going next summer with Zoe. KVELL AND TELL Mazal Tov to Hal & Debbie Baseman on their son Matt’s marriage to Stephanie Beaulieu. Mazal Tov to Seymour & Sandra Fox on the marriage of their daughter Barbara-Ann to Ted Winner. Congratulations to Tal Lifshitz on passing the Bar Exam. Temple Beth Am 13 October 2012 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL David Sherman, MJEd Director of Education Welcome to Elul / October! The solemnness of the High Holy Days will soon be behind us and coming up next are the festive holidays of Sukkot and Simchat Torah – Please keep your eyes peeled in the weekly Temple e-mail blasts, our TBA Facebook page (while there, “like” it too!) and on our NEW TBA web site (www.templebetham.com) for the details for these and all other TBA goings–on, as well as blogs, pix, … there are even specialized calendars, like the one with the programming just for Kindergarten – 2nd grade families! (You can also find “hold the dates open” on the next page of this article!) By now, your children have met their teachers and classmates, received their free TBA Religious School t-shirts, and generally, settled into the school year. We are asking that all students wear their t-shirts every Sunday – it is an amazing sight to see all those green t’s on Sundays at Kehillah! Please email me if your children have not received theirs, or with anything else that you would like to talk about regarding the school (dsherman@templebetham.com). And, speaking of Kehillah, please stop by the Sanctuary at 11:30am on Sundays and become part of the ruach (spirit!) of Kehillah. Our first Friday Night LIVE Service is October 12th. Todd Herzog will be here on the bima with Rabbi Alon and Cantor Tanya along with our FNL musicians - what a fantastic combination. The teachers and I look forward to seeing you all there. Shalom Chai reopened its doors on Tuesday evening, September 11th with a crowd of teens in attendance. The energy was over the top (in a good way)! There is still time to register your teen for Shalom Chai- bring her / him / them on a Tuesday at 6:30pm – you have the teen; I have the registration forms! Have you checked out our Temple’s Facebook page yet? We post items of interest and Religious School photos (and other photos, too) every week- go to our TBA Facebook page, “like” us and you will get to see all the excitement the students generate every week learning about their rich Jewish heritage and having fun at the same time! Before I close this month’s article, I would like to thank several people for all that they do, both in front of & behind the scenes: Fran Sachs is our new VP of Education. Fran is eager to hear from you with any comments or questions you may have about TBA’s learning programs. You may reach her at: francinesachs@yahoo.com. We thank Liz Denmark for her hard work and shepherding as the Ed VP over the past 2 years and welcome Fran! The gals in the office – what would we do without you? (Rhetorically asked…) Carol Safran, Carol Sleeper, Margot Hauser & Debbie Baseman- right from the start- todah RABAH! Also, a special thanks to Bruce Cohen along with Laura Stein for stepping up to the ‘plate’ and serving our hungry Tuesday students with pizza! Also, there’s Rich Remick, Alfredo & Pedro – always watching out to help make things run smoother. The Religious School needs the rest of YOU too! Please contact me if you have some time to help out – Bruce cannot do this on his own! We need volunteers to help make phone calls every now and then, chefs, artists, Hebrew helpers, and folks to ‘man’ the phones on Sundays. Just drop me an email if you can help out. Lastly, a shout-out to Yael Lawrence. Not only does she provide our little ones and their moms with amazing programs in our Mishpacha Center, and run a Joga (Jewish Yoga) elective for our teens at Shalom Chai, but now she will also be bringing Israeli folk dancing and movement to our Religious School! Once a month, the children will be letting their hair down and boogying to Yael’s music and dance! Temple Beth Am 14 October 2012 RELIGIOUS SCHOOL (cont.) Joey Here…When I was 16 years old, I went on a trip to Poland and Israel called the March of the Living (MOTL) to learn about the Holocaust. It changed my life and is no doubt one of the reasons I decided to dedicate my life (and profession) to Judaism. In April, we were fortunate enough to have the past JAMTY president, Nathan Ward, participate. Here is his story; “When I first thought about participating in the MOTL program I struggled with whether or not this trip was worth missing two weeks of school in my senior year, now I really understand why it’s so important. We began the first week of the trip in Poland, visiting (if that’s even the right word to use) the concentration camps and ghetto sites within cities such as Warsaw and Krakow. The second week was spent in Israel, celebrating Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut and connecting to the people and land of Israel. One significant event was the actual “March”, where I joined with 12,000 other participants from around the country to walk from the Auschwitz concentration camp to the Birkenau camp, a trek that during the Holocaust was referred to as a “death march”. We interacted with fellow Jewish teens from all over the world – Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and Morocco. We were here to rejoice in our Judaism and to show that Hitler’s plan ultimately failed. I experienced emotional extremes, especially when we visited the former site of the Treblinka extermination camp, which is now an awe-inspiring monument. The magnitude of deaths occurring at Treblinka became apparent when I looked at all the jagged stones scattered across the campsite, symbolizing lives lost and entire villages wiped out. I also felt an emotional connection to this camp because it made me think of my family members who did not make it out of the Ukraine before the war started - family that I’ve only seen in an old black-andwhite picture that resides in my home. Following my eye-opening stay in Poland was my first visit to Israel, where the stark contrasts between the two countries became very clear. During Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, it was amazing to see how every Israeli is affected by war. A siren sounds and all activity, even traffic, stops as people think about those who gave their lives defending the State of Israel. The mood of the day soon shifts as Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, immediately follows. We celebrated on Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem with a giant party. In addition to these celebrations, we also toured Masada, enjoyed Israeli home hospitality, interacted with Israeli teens, ate lots of falafel, and spent Shabbat in Jerusalem. Upon returning from the trip, I had missed ten school days, my senior prom, and an AP exam review, but I did not regret my decision to go at all. Through the MOTL program I made a deep connection to my Jewish identity and Israel, and made many close friends. The pre-trip preparation class helped me understand that the Holocaust is not old history that can just be read about in a book – it is relevant and important to learn about it today. We still have work to do to combat prejudice and it is our responsibility to stand up for others here, and around the world.” Hi, Joey Again…Recruiting for the trip starts soon; if you are in 11th or 12th grade and are interested, please contact me. Joshua is a 7th grader at Bak Middle School of the Arts where he majors in keyboard. Joshua is an avid pianist who loves playing Classical and Jazz music. In fact, for Joshua’s Mitzvah Project, he decided to create a CD of himself playing some of his favorite pieces on the piano. He will donate all of his profits from selling the CDs to the Jupiter Volunteer Clinic. This is a clinic where Joshua’s dad sees patients who are unable to afford health care. Look for the CDs in the TBA lobby on certain Tuesdays and Sundays during Religious School. In addition to his interest in music, Joshua is an active athlete. He has played travel soccer for several years with the Palm Beach Nomads and greatly enjoys a pick up game of football, tennis and basketball. He also loves sailing and waterskiing. Joshua spends his summers at Camp Skylemar in Maine where he is able to play sports all day long. Joshua is a huge sports fan and especially loves the Miami Dolphins and Miami Heat. Joshua looks forward to celebrating his special day with close friends and family. We are proud of the hard work Joshua has put in to preparing for his Bar Mitzvah. We want to thank Cantor Tanya, Rabbi Alon, David Sherman and all of Joshua’s teachers for helping to prepare him for this event. Jen and Dan Boss OCT0BER 13, 2012 BAT MITZVAH HALEY ROTHMAN Please share our joy as our daughter, Haley Rothman is called to the Torah to become a Bat Mitzvah on October 13, 2012. Haley is in the 8 th grade at Jupiter Middle School. She has been swimming for the Jupiter Dragons Swim Team since she was 8 years old. Haley has earned many medals and swims at Junior Olympic swim meets. Haley has a lot of compassion for animals and has wanted to be a veterinarian since a very young age. Next year, she will start to pursue that dream by applying to the Medical Program at Jupiter High School. Haley wants to focus on marine life animals, and because of this, her Mitzvah project will be dedicated to supporting Loggerhead Marinelife Center. She will be collecting donations to Adopt a Sea Turtle Patient or Nest which will directly benefit the continued care and treatment of LMC’s sick and injured turtles. We are so proud of Haley, as she has worked very hard and has been waiting for this day. We want to thank Rabbi Alon, Cantor Tanya, Hilary Lange and everyone at Temple Beth Am for helping Haley prepare for her upcoming Bat Mitzvah. With Love Always, Elisa Fraley, Sean and Suzanne Rothman OCTOBER 27, 2012 BAT MITZVAH OF ALEXA BECKER With great pride and joy we invite you to join us as our daughter, Alexa Jo is called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on October 27, 2012. Alexa is a 7th grade student at Bak School of the Arts with a major in Theatre. She loves music, especially musical theatre, both from the audience as well as being a participating cast member. Alexa has been able to join her passion for horses with her Bat Mitzvah project. She has raised both money and awareness for Vinceremos, an equestrian therapeutic riding center. With the funds she raised she was able to help send physically and mentally challenged riders to the Special Olympics in Tampa this past Spring. Alexa looks forward to spending more time riding and working with horses as well as continuing the work she began with Vinceremos this year. We would like to thank both Rabbi Alon, Cantor Tanya, and all of Alexa's teachers for their guidance and encouragement as Alexa prepares for this special day.
