EU hits Apple with $14.6 billion tax bill
From money.cnn.com:
Ireland must recover up to 13 billion euros ($14.6 billion)
in unpaid taxes from Apple, European officials said on
Tuesday.
The tax ruling is the biggest the European Union has ever
made regarding a single company, and it could spark a
huge transatlantic row over how Europe treats U.S.
companies.

Apple shares initially fell almost 3%, but then recovered
most of their losses. The company will appeal the
decision. It said the ruling upended the international tax
system and would damage jobs and investment in
Europe.
The European Commission, which administers EU law,
said the Irish government had granted illegal state aid to
Apple by helping the tech giant to artificially lower its tax
bill for more than 20 years.

We all know about the features of
FaceTime for audio and video calls to
friends and family who have Macs and
iPhones and iPads. But what if your
friend or brother-in-law bought an
Android phone? You could use Skype
and a few others but Google has a new
app for your iPhone called Google Duo.
It was available as of August 19 in the
App Store. You don’t need a Google
account to use it. The limitation is no
group calling like Skype. Google says
voice calling features are coming. Duo
works over your wifi network and the
interface is simple and clean. So you
might want to give it a try. The person
with the Android phone also needs to
install the software.
Here is some helpful information from
your membership chairman. Annual
membership dues are $10 per couple.
A user name and password are created
when first registering and that allows
access to the member section of our
website.
Apple will be unveiling its latest iPhone on
September 7, 2016. If you have never
watched the event you can go to twit.tv at
1p.m. to watch the proceedings.
If you have an Apple TV you can download
the app-TWIT and watch Leo LePort and
friends give you an analysis of the new
Apple iPhone. If you do not have an Apple
TV you can watch TWIT,TV on any Apple
device.
I have been fan for a number (too many to
remember) years of TWIT and find it to be
the most up to date program(s) on Apple
devices and software.
Two of the shows I watch religiously are IOS
Today and MacBreak Weekly. In addition
you can watch Security Now, Tech News
Today, Triangulation, Know How, The Tech
Guy, and so forth.
The new location for Slices can be

on the Slices logo on Page #1.

This is a work in progress as we try to
improve the video quality.
The best way for members to renew
their membership is to use the online
process. That frees us up at meetings
to register new members and give out
pickups in a timely manner.
A lost name badge has a $2
replacement fee. New badges are
printed around 11 AM the day of the
meeting. If you are a new member
registering for the club after that time,
your name badge will be ready at the
following meeting. You must have your
member’s badge and it needs to be an
up-to-date membership to be eligible for
the Apple iTunes card drawing.

Okay, I sent you a direct link to this

So what’s all the fuss about signing in
to your personal page on the web site?
If Slices arrives through a direct link,
who needs to worry about usernames
and passwords? Well, for one thing,
when you log into your page and click
on Slices you can review the whole
year’s crop of newsletters. And there’s
even an archive where you can delve
into this club’s history a bit.
How will I know if my membership
expired? Refer to the colored “dot” on
your printed name badge to check the
month/year for renewal (Ex.: 09/16).
Can I pay my dues with cash or a
check? No. With nearly 1,400
members, paying dues online is much
more efficient than the old paper apps.
When you submit your online
membership app on tvaug.net, you pay
with PayPal, using either your PP
account or a personal credit card. Your
receipt will be emailed to you from PP.
And there’s a button to click to review
our meeting presentations, as well as a
bunch of videos to look at. Or you can
review your personal profile and bring it
up to date. Your personal page is
where you can sign up for Google
Group, probably the most valuable tool
we have to offer members.
“Oops! I paid twice. Now what?” If you
pressed the “Submit” button twice,
sending in a double payment, don’t
panic. Simply send me an email to let
me know. After I confirm, I will issue a
credit on your PayPal account, and you
will receive a confirmation email.
Yes, you’ll still get your Slices though a
direct link. But there’s a lot more service
waiting for you when you sign into your
personal page. Try it even if you don’t
need it right now. You’ll find a link to
directions and a video on the front page
of our website, tvaug.org.

conversions using up to date exchange
rates.
This is a handy built-in feature for travelers
and it’s built right into the latest versions of

touch. To convert any currency, open
Spotlight from the Home Screen of iOS by
pulling down on an icon, then enter the
following syntax types, specifying the
currency to start with and to convert to.

How to Use Apple Hardware Test to Diagnose Mac Problems
Most computer users get accustomed to how they use their computers. But OS X
includes many customizable settings that you may like better. Look at how you can
use a vertical dock, full screen apps, tap-to-click and sticky keys to alter your Mac
user experience.
One of the definitive ways for an average user to determine if their Mac has a
hardware problem is to run Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, which is
what we’re going to show you how to do in this tutorial. Yes, most Mac users will
experience plenty of years of trouble-free computing, but sometimes hardware
problems can surface. Perhaps it’s a failing disk drive, bad memory, a GPU issue, a
motherboard problem, or a different hardware issue, there are a myriad of potential
hardware troubles that can surface, even if they are rare.

How to Take a Screen Shot On Your Mac
The good news is that Apple Hardware Test can check to see if there are indeed
hardware issues to look into, and you can run it yourself with just a little effort.
You can take simple screen shots on your Mac by learning just a few easy keyboard
shortcuts. You can grab the whole screen, just a section, or just a window. You can
also create a file with the screen shot, or copy it to the clipboard to use in another
app.
Note that Apple Hardware Test runs on Macs built in 2013 and before, whereas
newer Mac models will run Apple Diagnostics instead. The appearances are slightly
different as are the names, but the ability to test the hardware for problems is the
same regardless of how things look or what they are called. Testing Apple hardware
for troubles works the same on all Mac models, whether it’s an iMac, MacBook,
MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Mini, or Mac Pro, and the version of Mac OS or
Mac OS X on the computer does not matter.

Where does the Apple TV go next?

For as long as it’s been in existence, Apple TV has wanted to be something more
than what it is. Whether it was purchasing and renting movies, downloading games
and apps, or simply watching live programming, Apple’s digital media player has
always been a step or two behind its expectations.
The newest version of the watchOS operating system, watchOS 3, was
introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 13, 2016.
watchOS 3 is a significant update to the operating system, introducing new
apps, new watch faces, and impressive performance improvements.
According to Apple, "it's going to feel like a whole new watch."
Even as it’s
matured from a
Mac-reliant box to a
standalone
streaming dynamo,
there’s always
been a sense that
Apple TV’s
potential is greater
than its reality. And
while it may have
graduated from its
hobby status,
there’s still a sense
that it’s a secondary
device, something that adds value to the existing ecosystem but doesn’t really
stand on its own.
At least not yet. During Apple’s third-quarter earnings call last week, Tim Cook
teased a future for Apple TV beyond voice-controlled viewing and simplified signins: “You shouldn’t look at what’s there today and think we’ve done what we want to
do,” he said. "We’ve built a foundation that we think we can do something bigger off
of.” The message is clear:
After nearly 10 years in existence, Apple TV might finally be ready for its closeup.

Apple advises immediate update to
Why “ilovefreshsashimituna” is a
iOS 9.3.5 after discovery of Spyware

*** IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ ***
Apple released an update to iOS 9 on Aug. 25th —
iOS 9.3.5—that patches multiple critical zero-day
vulnerabilities that have been shown to already
have been deployed, allegedly by governments to
target activists and dissidents, according to a
report from Citizen Lab and Lookout Security.
Apple turned around an update within 10 days from
when the company received Citizen Lab’s initial
report. The update is recommended immediately
for all iOS 9 devices.
When used together, the exploits allow someone to
hijack an iOS device and control or monitor it
remotely. Hijackers would have access to the
device’s camera and microphone, and could
capture audio calls even in otherwise end-to-end
secured apps like WhatsApp. They could also grab
stored images, tracking movements, and retrieve
files.

parents' basements, trying to guess your passwords. That is
not typically how it is done.

A Look at Malware Terminology
When you read about computer security and
malware, the terminology can be dizzying. You may
feel that you've entered a world with some very
strange words whose meanings you can only guess
at. In order to help you understand malware, here's
a look at the most common terms used to describe
malicious software that can harm your computer and
mobile device, and threaten your security and
privacy.
These days it's more likely that dozens of hackers are
working together in an office building somewhere. They try
breaking into computer systems and ultimately take over your
computer, demanding a ransom to give it back. Or they could
try making a fast buck by selling your usernames and
passwords on the Black Market.
They use sophisticated computer systems to scan through
hundreds of thousands of passwords very quickly. These
computer systems are excellent at guessing passwords.
Until now, we've all been told that a good and secure
password requires at least eight or nine characters, using
both upper and lower case letters, a number or two, and a
few symbols. But not everyone adheres to those warnings
because it's difficult to remember a password made up of
gibberish.
Now for the good news: Researchers at Carnegie Mellon
University say that passphrases are just as good for your
online security as what we've been taught.

I’ve got a museum of old gadgets once destined to change
