Stand next to Percheron draft horses during a barn tour and learn the secret life of bees at a farm producing honey. All in all, you can “bet the farm” that these tours will sow fun for your groups. PIECES, PIES & POSIES TOUR County-wide, half-day to full-day A delectable tour guaranteed to make quilt lovers’ mouths water! At Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College hear how they are bringing renewal and vitality to ecosystems. Visit fabulous gardens including the unique DeFries Calendar Garden, Wellfield Botanic Gardens and the Quilt Gardens. Step into a tiny world of fantasy at a nursery specializing in miniatures. Learn about surprising and innovative growing practices at an Amish operated hydroponic vegetable farm. And at a community-based organic farm, the focus is on healthy. Build in a stop at the area’s largest garden center and include fresh and tasty Amish Country meals and you have a tour sure to take root. ROCKET SCIENCE ICE CREAM AT COPPES COMMONS Enjoy a scoop of “out of this world” ice cream from Rocket Science! Each individual serving is crafted from a premium ice cream mix and real fruits, nuts, candies, and sauces, using their own special recipes. It is then quick frozen right before your eyes with liquid nitrogen. It’s the creamiest and the most amazing treat you’ll find anywhere in the US. REAL INDIANA AMISH COUNTRY HOUSEWIVES Forget reality TV and meet the real housewives of Amish Country. Get a first-hand look at a day in the life of Amish women. Learn how these ladies do household chores without electrical appliances and run their businesses without modern technology. Enjoy a cinnamon roll demo with Elaine or Mary Lou. Visit Carolyn’s home for a haystack lunch and a peanut butter crumb pie making demo. Chat with a basket weaver about her thriving business. Meet an Amish school teacher and and find out how she manages her classes in a one-room school. Everyone gets an after school treat too - a whoopie pie to take home. At the end of the day, groups go home with a renewed respect for these women who live a simple life, yet they’re anything but simple. RUTHMERE CELEBRATES DOWNTON ABBEY AFTERNOON TOUR & TEA Step into the past and experience what life was like for the affluent at the turn of the previous century. Tour the opulent home built in 1910 by Albert and Elizabeth Beardsley, a prominent Elkhart couple. Admire the elaborate window treatments, silk wall coverings, carved mahogany woodwork, revival-style furnishings and fabulous art works that adorn the mansion. Peek into Elizabeth’s boudoir where dresses still hang in the closet. Then enjoy a “Downton Abbey” style afternoon tea complete with hot tea, cold lemonade, tea sandwiches and fresh fruit served in the Game Room or on the covered Piazza if weather permits. Everyone goes home feeling grand. 800.262.8161 AmishCountryTours.org 5 > MORE WHAT’S NEW IN AMISH COUNTRY AMISH ACRES CANDY KITCHEN Amish Acres is best known for their historic farm and education on Amish beliefs fostering a tolerance among different religions and cultures, but did you know the fudge shop makes over 50,000 lbs of fudge and candy a year? Learn how to make your own delicious candies from one of their expert candy makers and have a treat to enjoy later. “UDDERLY” FUN AT KNOLLBROOK FARM See plenty of contented cows touring family-operated Knollbrook Farm in Goshen. It’s one of only ten robotic dairy farms in Indiana using cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices in maintaining their herd of more than 100 dairy cows. Watch as their “girls” are pampered relaxing on the regularly aerated compost bedding pack (soft, fluffy, sustainable bedding) and roam freely with no stalls to hamper their movements. Then observe how they line up for their “candy” treat while being robotically milked. And where there are dairy cows there are always irresistibly cute calves. Groups love the chance to get close to these “cuties” to pet and feed them. Great photo op too! The farm also provides plenty of fun photo ops around the “cow” and “spider” made of hay bales. Come autumn (mid-September / October) their giant corn maze, pumpkin sling shot and carpet ball are extra sure-to-please activities. Guarantee your group an “udderly” fun day and plan a tour of Knollbrook Farm. SONSHINE BASKETS Weave some fun into your tour with a stop at Sonshine Baskets, an authentic Amish Country handcraft experience. Lovely hand-woven baskets of every shape and for every purpose fill this Amish owned and operated country shop located on the family farm of Calvin & Anna Yoder. Watch as family members demonstrate and talk about the processes of turning plain reed into something of beauty and function. And it seems every family member is involved from weaving to making the fabric liners, from hand-staining to adding the leather handles that adorn many of the baskets. As Anna says, “We weave our way through life one day at a time!” After learning first hand, take time to shop for your own piece of authentic “made in Amish Country” basket. THE GARDEN CAFE AT LINTON’S ENCHANTED GARDENS GROUP BOX LUNCH The Garden Cafe features over one hundred handcrafted hot and cold drink choices plus fresh baked cookies all day long. Menu items include healthy breakfast offerings, custom made sandwiches, crisp garden salads and homemade soups featuring Linton’s own locally grown seasonal herbs and garden vegetables. Groups enjoy a gourmet box lunch including your choice of sandwich served with Veggie Chips and Linton’s own Mango Lime Salsa, a fresh baked cookie and soft drink. MUNCH A BUNCH IN AMISH COUNTRY Groups delight in every bite and no one goes home hungry on this tour that samples the culinary specialties of Amish Country. Begin at a bustling Amish bakery famous for its addictive cashew crunch candy and cinnamon-caramel donuts that satisfy every connoisseur’s sweet tooth. A stop an Amish cheese factory is awarded with tastings of Baby Swiss and Colby Jack cheeses among others. At a nearby country market watch the Lehman family roll-out made-from-scratch noodles and put them on racks to dry. They also specialize in fresh-from-the-hive honey and rich nut butters. Top off this food foray with a cooking demo and hearty meal in an Amish home complete with a hefty slice of just-baked pie. It’s the perfect end to a scrumptious tour.
