2010 Hack n` Smack program
7th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic Kerry Daveline Memorial Monday, April 19, 2010 El Caballero Country Club supporting “The cancer we can see, but no one talks about.” Presented by The Actors’ Network Aaron, Darla & Mike... You simply have made the event possible since its inception! Thank you. Kerry Scot Daveline March 4, 1961 South Bend, ID January 4, 2003 Sherman Oaks, CA Kerry Daveline (far left), at his final USC / Notre Dame game with tournament Co-Hosts Kevin E. West and Michael Moynahan. “Every man dies. Not every man truly lives.” — Braveheart The Hack n’ Smack event is the fulfillment of a promise made to Kerry Daveline by his friend, Kevin E. West, just prior to Kerry’s death on January 4th, 2003. Kevin and Kerry wanted to combine their passion for golf to raise money and awareness in the fight against melanoma. Kerry fought like a champ for nearly five years, still singing, doing voice over work and traveling. While Kerry was not able to share in the joy of their birth, his widow, Mia Daveline gave birth to their miracle post-mortem twin daughters on January 3rd, 2005. They all attend the event annually. Michelle Cerznin von Chudenitz We are proud to support The Melanoma Research Foundation in memory of our friend Kerry Daveline Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren & Richman, LLP Silver Lake’s “Walking Man” is far more than that! Thanks so much for caring about Kerry and being the man you are... shirt or no shirt. Dr. Marc Abrams is a giant amongst giants. Generous and sincere. We are forever in your debt. Why we are here! Every hour of every day, someone dies of melanoma in the US. Melanoma strikes people of all ages, race, and economic level. One in 75 Americans will develop melanoma during their lifetime. Melanoma is the most highly preventable, and treatable if caught early. Please help start the awareness this particular cancer needs now more than ever. Of all of the various skin cancers, melanoma is known to be the most deadly if not caught in its earliest phases. Approximately 60,000 will be diagnosed with melanoma and 8,00 will die this year from melanoma. Melanoma is the fastest rising cancer it continues to receive less than 10% of the funding given to basic research of other cancers. In fact, funding for melanoma research is typically distributed to studies focused on treatments for other cancers in the hope that there might be benefit for the melanoma patient. This has been happening since the late 70’s and 80’s. We know that therapies effective for other cancers typically are not effective for the melanoma patient. Yet critical funds are expended in basic research that is over 20 years old and known to have little benefit to the melanoma community. To find new and more effective treatments, funding MUST be increased now. On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors, thank you for being a part of this event to benefit the Melanoma Research Foundation. Randy Lomax, Chair Tim Turnham, Executive Director Tournament Co-Host Tournament Co-Host Kevin E. West Michael Moynahan “On January 4, 2003 I lost a 17year friend and became glaringly aware of how precious life is.“ You don’t have to have a spouse, kids or be old to realize...time is short. We hurry, we rush, and push to succeed...guilty as charged. But since the death of my friend...I’ve slowed just a hair, so that I won’t miss much from here on out. “I feel so honored to have been a part of Kerry’s life. I met him in 1987 and shared many of my most memorable life experiences with him and his family. I think about him everyday. I wish he could be here playing with us today (preferably in someone else’s foursome).’ He taught me so much in his living and in his dying. The love he shared with Mia, is but one shining example. Let’s play hard and enjoy every minute of it. Kerry would have wanted it that way. I hope you enjoyed the sky, the golf, the grass, and the laughs. Kerry would have liked that. I hope it brings you good cheer and back here...next year! Irish eyes are smiling on you.” “Oh, and Mia...he still owes me 20 bucks.” Event Coordinator Jenn Wilson Event Director Ron Ransen CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS Major Tee Gift Sponsors élevée Nektar Genentech Studio 9 Executive Sponsors Steiner Bros. West Mike Moynahan The Actors’ Network The Beach Toys Aaron Postil 2010 Honoree Allie MacKay 2010 Warrior Our 2010 Honoree is Aaron Postil From the inception of the Hack n’ Smack Celebrity Golf event there was Aaron Postil. It goes without question, the Hack n’ Smack event would not likely have gone beyond year one, had it not been for the influence and efforts of Mr. Aaron Postil and his family. We stand most grateful. Aaron Postil established End It Entertainment in early 2007 as a natural outgrowth of his years in the music and entertainment business, primarily in management. As President and Founder of the fullservice production company, Postil is looking to incubate a wide range of multi-media projects and bring time-intensive artist development back into fashion. Postil has also been on the Committee of the Hack n’ Smack annual golf tournament for 7 years now which all benefits goes to the Melanoma Foundation. “Melanoma is the most over looked cancer in the world and if I can use my influences and contacts to bring awareness then I feel like have given back.” Postil has got stars like Justin Timberlake, Joe Pesci, Alfonso Ribiero, Grant Show and Harold Green involved in the charity. An L.A. native who grew up in a musical household, Postil hadn’t originally planned to go into the “family business.” An avid, lifelong golfer who had a four handicap at age twelve and was even par at sixteen, Postil intended to go pro. He’s been fortunate enough to travel extensively and play at the world’s best courses, but ultimately opted against it as a career. “I’m among the top 1% in the world,” he says, “and the PGA tour pros, they’re in the top .01%. I knew I wasn’t ever going to be as good as Tiger Woods, and I decided to just enjoy the sport rather than become competitive.” Postil’s main clients at End It include longtime friend Qura Rankin, an acclaimed composer and producer who’s recently worked with Beyonce and Christina Aguilera. Award-winning producer Damizza (Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mariah Carey) is another collaborator, and Postil also helps oversee Damizza’s independent label, BabyRee Recordings. In 2007, BabyRee released What A Life, the debut album by the all-star blues-rock group L.A. Blues Alliance. The project, which features ace musicians including Keb’ Mo’ and Sonny Landreth, was produced by Postil’s father, famed television composer Mike Post (who, in addition to a spate of awards including Emmys and GRAMMYs, has a song by The Who named after him). In 2003 Postil was with the Gorfaine-Schwarz Agency, a firm specializing in managing top producers and composers (with clients including Glen Ballard, Phil Ramone and Dave Stewart). It was there that Postil formed his associations with Qura and Damizza. Along with the great producers Postil works with he has cultivated some great artists as well. Bishop Lamont has gained a solid underground fan base over the last 4 years working with (Dr. Dre, 50 cent, Eminem). Bishop is set to release his first record and star in a movie with Tom Sizemore in 2010. Butch Cassidy has been in the game since 1998. Breaking through with Snoop Dogg, Westside Connection. Butch also has worked with Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Nate Dogg. In addition Butch will release his first record sometime in 2010. Our 2010 Warrior of the Year is Allie MacKay. Allie Mac Kay is thrilled to be back home in southern California. She started her broadcast career atop a billboard as part of a radio stunt for XTRA Sports 1150. She was the “sports update girl” for the morning show when she was dared to live on a billboard until the Clippers won their first game. She then moved to morning t.v. doing features in Salt Lake City, Sacramento, Good Morning America weekends and Fox and Friends weekends. Allie’s story: “It would seem clear to any sane person that spending afternoons playing with friends on the beaches in Malibu and spending Summers baking on a lake in Maine, that a freckly, blonde haired, blue eyed girl from Scottish and Irish ancestry should not be tan... let alone anything other than pink. But I was not sane... I was a teenager. Couple that with being the “California Girl” at Boston college... I had an image to uphold - so tanning salons became my comfort during those snowy Winters. It didn’t take long for all of that insanity to take it’s toll. In October of 2005 I was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma. I thought it would be just like the previous squamous and basal cells that I had spliced off, and I would be on my way. I was wrong - and beyond lucky. That little pink mole on my hip that looked nothing like anything I had googled turned out to be something that would change the way I looked at each day. Since my surgeries I have had 14 more basal and squamous cell carcinomas removed - and have not been in the sun since. I have also had 2 friends pass away from melanoma. Both under the age of 35. I has opened my eyes, and more importantly the eyes of others around me that had no idea how fast this cancer spreads. I have now become “that” girl. That girl that will kindly point out moles on friends (and oh yes, strangers). That girl that wants each and every tanning salon shut down. That girl that buys up Loreal Sunless Tanning Towels like they are the only thing to save us in a nuclear war. I have yet to master the spray tan - but I will take splotchy fingers and kneecaps over the alternative any day.” Genentech A SPECIAL THANK YOU to the following individuals and corporations who have donated goods and services helping make our tournament a success. West have been friends since 1992. Wayne was one of the first 20 members of The Actors’ Network way back inits infancy. They both shared a passion for golf (Wayne is better), snow skiing (Wayne is better), and acting. When Kerry was diagnosed in 1998 they found one more thing in Common…Melanoma. Wayne’s hits about as close to home as one can. Here’s his story. We are blessed to still have him with us. I am a two-time cancer survivor. My latest bout was with malignant melanoma. I found out about my first cancer diagnosis on my birthday in 1984—it was cancer of the muscle, Desmoid Sarcoma, and it was also malignant. They removed my right-top quadriceps and I had radiation treatments twice a day for three months. After a lot of pain, and rehab (and being told by doctors that I would never play sports again, which, by the way, I still do!) I’m fine, and VERY lucky. Wayne Benson I went to see the doctor told him my story. He showed me some pictures of what melanoma looks like, looked at my face and said it was nothing. I told him that I had cancer before in LA and was concerned. He asked me what I did in LA, and when I told him I was an actor he said, and I quote, “oh, so it’s a vanity thing.” I said no, it was because a friend new someone who had a similar looking mark on her face and she had died. “I’m a doctor and your friend is not, you believe whomever you want—your friend is wrong, that is not melanoma.” 5 days later, another call: still didn’t clear the margins. Dr. Altman told me if we didn’t clear the margins this time we would need to go to Mayo clinic for mosh surgery. We called Mayo just in case but hoped for the best with the third surgery. The third biopsy came back, we had cleared the margins(!) and once again I had (knock on wood) been extremely lucky and survived something that many people had not. Remember, the one thing I found to be true is that if a doctor tells you 30% of the people die, that means 70% live. The mind and body are powerful things and can go a long way to healing one’s self if you maintain a positive attitude. Yes, I am a 2-time cancer survivor and, depending on how you look at it, either very unlucky or lucky. I choose to believe the latter. Wayne Benson 7th Annual Hack n’ Smack is presented by... “Help us, help you...help all of us.” “Learn from the mistakes of others, you don’t have time to make them all yourself.” 323-848-6700 www.actors-network.com Alums include: Christopher Gorham (Harper’s Island/Ugly Betty), Maggie Grace (Taken/Lost), Masi Oka (Heroes), and Merrin Dungey (King of Queens)!
