NEWS nature’s source ™ ISSUE 5, 2007 Anti-Aging and Skin Care GREAT SKIN BEGINS WITH YOU! Everyone loves to have that great acne free, age spot free and wrinkle free complexion and I am sure you, the reader, feel no different. Yes, great skin does begin with you and let me show you why! I love this subject because so often it clashes with the fashion and cosmetic industry that tell you that using topical makeup as well as facial products will solve your problem. While I agree that there are some great products out there that help you look younger, the truth is that only proper nutrition internally can pave the way to keeping great skin. Many people are making the connection and realizing that it is the types of foods they are eating that are responsible for causing their symptoms. When your mother and father said, “You are what you eat”, they were right. So hats off to mom and dad who knew something when they said that a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables provides the body with the optimal nutrition and energy it needs. Quite simply put, whole foods provide your body with essential phyto-nutrients, vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, enzymes and amino acids. They feed and nourish your skin and contribute to your overall health. Benefits include improved skin structure and firmness, reduced signs of sagging and eye circles, reduced roughness and scaling, better sleeping patterns, and improved mood. Without these nutrients you can expect to have greater difficulty dealing with the repair and elasticity of your skin. Moreover poor dietary habits lead to many degenerative diseases that are easy to avoid but instead give you an insatiable appetite for junk food and sugar. This type of diet creates free radical damage. Eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and acne are all signs that there is inflammation in your body. Skin tissue is damaged both on the visible outer layers and non-visible inner layers. There are many things that affect the structure of a cell and its production that topical creams do not address. However, the most important message here is that if the outer membrane of the cell (the protective layer) breaks down and deteriorates, how will your body protect itself against the excess toxins and oxidative stress? Your cells will lose their ability to resist the influx of these toxins. Toxins entering the cell mitochondria and the nucleus disrupt the working environment of the cell (protein synthesis, ATP production, etc.). This is especially true in diseases such as cancer, fibromyalgia, IBS, and diabetes where chronic inflammation is at work, quickly aging the body. Excessive sugar causes your cells to actually caramelize through a process called “glycation” where your cells are actual beginning to change like a turkey browning in the oven. Prevention is the solution. Natural foods and supplements containing the highest “Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC)” are what we need. High ORAC foods counter active inflammation and cellular tissue damage and may reduce -continued on pg. 7 natures-source.com IN THIS ISSUE Great Skin Begins With You! - pg. 1 SILICA - Anti-Aging Superstar - pg. 3 Evening Primrose Oil for Healthy Skin - pg. 3 Muscle loss and Aging – Advice for the Elderly - pg. 4 Got Spice? - pg. 4 Healthy Skin with Tissue Salts - pg. 5 NEW PRODUCTS - pg. 7 Spray Paint is Not the Answer - pg. 7 Hair Care - pg. 8 nature’s source news is written, edited and designed by nature’s source staff mail order 1.866.502.6789 store hours monday to friday: 10am - 9pm saturday: 10am - 6pm sunday: 11am - 6pm other oils. It is the second-most-common element on the earth’s crust, led only by oxygen, and yet we still cannot seem to get enough from our diets. It’s role in maintaining overall health cannot be understated as many of the diseases of aging are the result of the collagen-based breakdown of our tissues. Silica is absolutely essential as the foundational matrix for the formation of collagen, the primary connective tissue of the human body. Yet this simple element is often missing from most anti-aging protocols. Here is what we know. The average human body holds approximately 7 grams of silica, which is far in excess of other important minerals like iron, yet we hear far more about iron deficiency. When we are young silica levels in our bodies are high and coincidentally we enjoy having strong, flexible bones and joints along with healthy wrinkle-free skin. As we age, silica levels decline and without adequate tissue levels of silica, we manifest many of the symptoms of aging. Effects and symptoms include osteoporosis along with the subsequent impaired ability to heal and repair wounds, loss of mobility, increased aging of the skin, hair and nails, declining arterial integrity (the aortas of healthy individuals contain 10 times the amount of silica of those with diseased aortas); in short, just about any condition where connective tissue is involved. Another important aspect of silica is that it appears to displace the absorption of aluminium in the body, perhaps making it a crucial element in preventing Alzheimer’s which many have linked to the element aluminium. Theoretically we should be able to get enough silica from our diets from readily available foodstuffs like oats, rice, barley, wheat and potatoes. However modern processing often removes most of whatever silica there was to begin with. Also the silica from these foods cannot be directly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract without first being made soluble via stomach secretions causing the production of orthosilicic acid, the form of silica the body actually uses. Through age or condition, many individuals do not make sufficient stomach acid to absorb silica and other nutrients. In light of its many benefits it would seem prudent to add silica to any anti-aging or health regimen one may wish to consider. Current estimates are that we are getting somewhere between 20 and 60 milligrams of silica in our daily diet, (less if we are heavy meat eaters). When this is compared with the much higher doses (e.g. 300+ mg) seen to produce therapeutic benefits, it clearly demonstrates that our requirements are not being met. A final note - if one has impaired digestion try the orthosilicic form of silica, as this type of silica will raise tissue concentrations much more effectively than the herbal and/or colloidal forms. Mario Alonzi, B.Sc., is Manager of the nature’s source store in Mississauga. Skin care is therefore important not just for our outer beauty but more importantly for maintaining our inner health. (from Efamol Nutritional Solutions, Edition 14). Skin must be kept in good health to perform its functions correctly. Fatty acids are important components of skin. Some of the first signs of EFA (essential fatty acid) deficiency are dry skin, poor wound healing, and reduced ability to fight skin infections. Omega-6 EFAs including linoleic acid (LA) and its derivative gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) play an important role in skin health. Evening Primrose Oil is rich in LA and GLA. Clinical studies with Efamol brand Evening Primrose Oil showed that supplementation can enhance the structure and function of normal healthy skin. In a double-blind, placebo controlled study, supplementation with Efamol Evening Primrose Oil for 84 days was shown to statistically significantly improve: • Skin moisture Evening Primrose Oil for Healthy Skin We all love to have healthy looking skin, but did you know that when skin looks better it also functions better? Skin is our largest organ. It covers about two square meters and weighs several kilograms. Although we often take it for granted, skin is vitally important to our everyday survival. It protects our bodies from infection and disease, prevents water loss and controls body temperature. Receptors in our skin allow us to detect heat, cold, pressure, touch and pain, which enables us to interact with our environment without sustaining injury. As well, skin synthesizes vitamin D. • TEWL (The rate at which the water escapes from the body through the skin) • Skin Roughness • Skin Elasticity • Skin Firmness • Skin Fatigue The changes seen with Evening Primrose Oil provide benefits to both skin function and appearance. These improvements tighten skin, reduce wrinkles and dryness, and give a more youthful glow to normal healthy skin (Efamol Nutritional Solutions, Edition 14). Heather Allsop, B.Sc., Ph.D., RNCP is a nutritional consultant and editor of the nature’s source Newsletter. 3 nature’s source NEWS ™ This leads to the next question – what should the elderly consume to prevent the associated muscle loss with aging? In the elderly, the data seems to support the idea of you using Branch Chain Amino Acids, aka BCAA’s (Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine) along with a mixture of just essential amino acids. Leucine seems to be the most important of the BCAA’s in protein synthesis. The researchers state that in order to achieve the highest anabolic efficiency per energy unit it is important to deliver only nutrients that are absolutely necessary for the stimulation of muscle protein. The Bottom Line Muscle loss and Aging –Advice for the Elderly Sarcopenia is an age-related progressive loss of muscle mass that leads to muscle weakness, limited mobility, and increased susceptibility to injury. The exact mechanisms involved in sarcopenia have not been clearly understood. Indeed, an imbalance between protein synthesis and protein breakdown rate can lead to the loss of muscle proteins. In 2006 researchers Fujita et al reviewed the available literature and discussed the difference between young muscle fibers vs old muscle fibers. The authors concluded that there is in fact a difference between how younger and older muscle fibers utilize protein. Normally, in younger subjects carbohydrates (via insulin) stimulate greater utilization of protein and increase protein synthesis. However, the available literature reported by Fujita suggests that older individuals don’t respond to this carbohydrate and protein mixture due to a decrease in sensitivity of older muscle fibers to insulin. In fact, the authors conclude the following: “We found that whereas the addition of carbohydrate to an amino acid meal enhanced the amino acid stimulation of muscle protein synthesis in young subjects, such a combination did not have any additive effect on muscle protein synthesis in older subjects.” 4 Look for a product that has just essential amino acids and a high content of BCAA’s (12grams/day). Whey protein is high in essential amino acids, along with BCAA’s, however for certain cases just amino acids/BCAA’s may be optimal. Below is a list of benefits of exercising for older adults. Keep in mind that an increase in protein consumption and exercise synergistically has a profound effect on many aspects of health. Discuss your specifics with your health care provider, as the information presented here is general. Older adults: Physical Activity and Health Report of the Surgeon General - Physical Activity and Health, 1996 Benefits of Physical Activity • Helps maintain the ability to live independently and reduces the risk of falling and fracturing bones. • Reduces the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and of developing high blood pressure, colon cancer, and diabetes. • Can help reduce blood pressure in some people with hypertension. • Helps people with chronic, disabling conditions improve their stamina and muscle strength. • Reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression and fosters improvements in mood and feelings of well-being. • Helps maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints. • Helps control joint swelling and pain associated with arthritis. Spice teas are aromatic, often consisting of a blend of spices, such as cinnamon or ginger, with a base of black or green tea. Imagine such a cup of tea on a cold winter day! There are a variety of commercial spice teas available; otherwise, you can make your own, following the directions below. Black Tea (Camellia sinensis) The base of a spice tea is usually black tea. Harvested from hedge-like tea bushes along mountainsides in the east, the “black tea” that we know is actually the top 3 leaves of each branch of the tea bushes. Once picked, the tea leaves are dried; and once dried, the leaves are then cut, roasted, and swept into large rectangular piles to ferment. Black tea is used for both medicinal and non-medicinal purposes. On the medicinal spectrum, black tea is traditionally used in Ayurveda for conditions requiring an astringent agent, such as hemorrhoids. Additionally, black tea is commonly employed as a diaphoretic and febrifuge (the diaphoretic-induced sweat release aids in lowering elevated body temperatures), and also as a nerve tonic. A cloth soaked in tea is applied to the closed eyelid to combat eye infections, since the tannins in the black tea help draw the infection out. Recent research at the Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka has confirmed these ancient Ayurvedic medicinal properties, in addition to several others, including anti-carcinogenic and slight cholesterol-lowering effects. Spice It! On the spicy end, if you plan to create a spicy tea experience on your own, you can add ½ tsp black tea and ½ tsp of spice (for instance, cinnamon, crushed cardamom, and/or ginger) to 4 cups of hot water in your teapot. The medicinal benefits of some of the spices you might include in your spice tea are discussed below. Cardamom (Eletteria cardamomum) The aromatic seeds of the cardamom plant grow in pods like peas; each pod holds as many as 20 seeds. Cardamom plants are a familiar sight in Sri Lankan mountain forests. The seeds are wild- crafted just prior to breaking open in the late summer. The pods are sun-dried whole; once dried, the seeds are separated and used. Current research shows cardamom seeds contain volatile oils, which primarily target the digestive system. To this end, cardamom is a good carminative and is thought to provide digestive stimulation when required. Cardamom is also traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for treating vata deficiencies in the body, seen by impaired nervous system heath. Additionally, cardamom can be effective against halitosis, and is able to mask the strong odor of raw garlic when cardamom is consumed after the garlic. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) A relative of turmeric, ginger (or Singabera as it is called in Sanskrit), has traditionally been used as a digestive tonic (indigestion, nausea, cramping, and colic). Ginger enhances circulation to the periphery, a useful action, especially during the wintertime! The characteristic hot, peppery taste of ginger is due to its oleoresin compound, called gingerol. As discussed above, the components in spice tea, such as black tea, cardamom, and ginger, have medicinal value. Today, brew a pot of hot spice tea...and warm up and relax! Healthy Skin with TISSUE SALTS Tissue salts, also known as cell salts, bio-chemic salts and Scheussler salts, were developed by Dr. William Scheussler, a homeopath, back in the 1870’s. Through his research of analyzing human blood and ashes after death, he was able to isolate 12 mineral compounds of the body. Dr. Scheussler concluded that any deficiency of these cells could result in an abnormal state in the body. Dr. Scheussler made homeopathic preparations of these cell salts, to be administered as a single salt or in combination, to act as a catalyst in restoring the body back to health. The 12 Tissue Salts are: Calc Fluor, Calc Phos, Calc Sulph, Ferr Phos, Kali Mur, Kali Phos, Kali Sulph, Mag Phos, Nat Mur, Nat Phos, Nat Sulph, and Silicea. These tissue salts usually come in tablet form in a lactose base, and dissolve easily under the tongue. They are now available in a liquid or a spray format by some suppliers. Cell salts are found in potencies of 3X, 6X, 12X which represents the dilutions factor of the original substance (see Issue 2, 2006 for an explanation). In general the lower potency is for acute conditions and the higher potency is for chronic conditions. The dosage can vary between 2 – 4 tablets, 2-6 times a day, dissolved under the tongue. It is important to know that you may take any tissue salt individually or in combination with any others. Most of the suppliers make combinations for pre-existing conditions, be it for skin health or any other problem. For more information you can contact Baljinder S. Chhoker at nature’s source at 905-257-1655. Of these 12 cell salts there are 4 that are commonly used for skin disorders. They were on sale because of their brown, withered condition. She planted them in the front yard, convinced that they’d recover. The neighbours weren’t as convinced, and pretty soon those pathetic bushes became the joke of the neighbourhood. My Dad, never one to pass up an opportunity to thwart the “neighbourhood watch”, snuck out one night and gave those shrubs a thorough coating of green spray paint. There stood the shrubs the next day miraculously restored to their green, youthful glory. In our youth obsessed culture, our challenge lies in redefining the aging process as an evolutionary process of learning, fitness and vitality. It’s not enough to just spray on the paint and have the outside look good – we have to make the time to discover the ways of redesigning our interiors as well. How can we accomplish this? Learn one new thing about your body every day and put your antiaging strategy into practice. Self education is important to the discovery process and is a great way to improve brain function. -continued on pg. 8 At some point in our lives, we all begin to feel the inevitable pressure that comes with aging. Thanks to mainstream media, we all think we should look younger than we are, and with easy access to a multitude of health and beauty aids it’s not difficult. If we can’t actually be younger, then it’s nice to think we can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in only 8 days – or appear to look 30 pounds lighter in a month. It reminds me of a story my Dad used to tell 7 HAIR CARE Spray Paint is Not the Answer -continued from pg. 7 Take stress, for instance. Adrenal burnout is common because of the negative effects of constant, everyday stress. Continual production of the stress hormone cortisol not only exhausts the adrenal glands, but can contribute to thyroid problems as well. Managing stress through exercise, meditation, supplementation and diet will be an important component of your anti-aging strategy. Did you know that as our cardiovascular and respiratory systems age, oxygen and nutrients are not delivered in sufficient quantities to the tissues? In addition, as a result of pollution, soil stripping and food processing, the majority of us are not receiving sufficient amounts of nutrients coming into the body to prevent degeneration. What does this mean for you? It means that if you’re thinking about spray painting, it’s probably time to do a little work from the inside out – and if you’re not sure where to begin, there are lots of us out here who are happy to help you get started. It’s never too late to learn. Anne Brownell, B.A., is an Assistant Manager at nature’s source in Oakville. She is enrolled in the Registered Holistic Nutritionist Program at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition. Hair is a symbol of our overall health and vitality. Many people think that hair care starts with shampooing. Not so! It starts with what you eat. In general, a healthy diet of whole foods – whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sufficient protein and lots of water is needed. Hair contains all the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients the body needs for health. This is why diet is so important for the condition of your hair. It is about 97% protein, which is the building block for strong hair. Hair loss (alopecia) is becoming increasingly common today, even among women. To prevent hair loss, nutrients such as Vitamin C, PABA, Biotin, L-Cysteine and Glutathione can assist by preventing hair follicles from clogging. Essential oils are known for their therapeutic properties in hair care. Some essential oils have resulted in much success against alopecia, however they are not likely to cure baldness. To help with hair loss, you can use a mild, natural shampoo (100ml) mixed with the following oils: • 15 drops of jojoba oil • 8 drops of carrot oil • 7 drops of rosemary oil • 7 drops of lavender oil • 2 drops of tea tree oil If you have never used a specific essential oil, it may be wise to do a skin patch test to test for an allergic reaction before using it on your hair. As well, here are some simple treatments that you can apply to help manage certain hair conditions: Oily Hair Massage ground cucumber or watermelon into shampooed hair and leave on your scalp for 15 minutes before rinsing. Dry Hair Massage mashed avocado into shampooed hair and leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing. Normal Hair Massage mashed peaches into wet hair for 15 minutes before rinsing. Shine and Volume-Boosting Combine 1 Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 2 cups warm water in a bowl. Pour mixture over shampooed hair. This rinse will restore the natural balance of your hair and add shine and softness.
