MESSAGE FROM
THE PRESIDENT
M. Silvia Bettega, Ed.D.
Salut tout le monde,
Where did the year go? It’s difficult to imagine that we are
already planning our 2011 AFH Annual meeting.
At the end of my first year of presidency, I would like to thank
all those members and friends who got involved and generously volunteered their time to help the AFH accomplish its
mission to promote the French language and culture.
Our first year’s bilan includes a trip to Québec, outreach efforts with other Alliances, local non-profit organizations, language teachers and educational organizations, a new and dramatically improved website, great numbers at the school –
yes, friends, the economy IS improving - and many interesting
and well-attended functions in English and French.
I also would like to give a special thanks to our departing Executive Director, Harriett Canty, for her dedication and her
good work at the office supporting students and teachers, helping with events, and putting together our newsletter. Unfortunately Harriett’s time as Alliance Française Executive Director
is coming to an end but she has agreed to remain as Vice
President on the 2011-12 Board of Directors.
McFarland Book Awards
May 20, 2011 at 3h30 p.m.
Founders Hall – CCSU
Special thanks go also to Del Rose, our Vice President, who is
stepping down from the Board after three years at the helm of
the Governance Committee. Del and his wife Denise will enjoy a well-deserved retirement of trips and fun.
The Alliance Française de Hartford will honor students at the middle
and high schools levels with the McFarland Memorial Book Award.
The award was named in honor our AFH past president and longtime Simsbury resident, Mr. Robert McFarland, who had a passion
for the French language and for teaching. Mr. McFarland pursued a
career in education after achieving success in the insurance industry.
I am sure that there are many challenges waiting for us around
the corner but with your help and enthusiasm, we will tackle
them successfully. Please, get involved and join us.
See you all at the Annual meeting.
En Alliance,
These awards are given at no cost as an outreach to the academic
community. The purchase of book prizes is funded through donations from the McFarland family. However, we need additional support to continue this tradition. Please consider making a taxdeductible contribution to help fund this outreach to young people
studying the language and culture of French-speaking countries.

Summer French for Fun and Fluency
Designed for intermediate students of French, this course promotes improvement of pronunciation and conversational skills, introduces and practices daily,
useful vocabulary, and explores many fundamental grammatical concepts essential for fluency. In addition to grammar and speaking, we will focus on cultural motifs of the francophone world. We will use the textbook Contacts and its workbook as well film and supplements provided by the instructor. The
course will evolve over both summer sessions, so students may take one or both segments at will. See French 101a and French 101b for information as to
how to purchase the textbook and its workbook.
"Face-À-Face: Conversational French" (I and II)
A highly interactive conversational course at the intermediate to advanced level using the innovative approach explored by the textbook Face-À-Face, this
class incorporates short segments of film, extensive vocabulary, cultural explanations, and spontaneous discussion. While grammar will also be studied and
practiced in the context of the film dialogues, the focus remains on reading, watching, and listening as preparation to freely converse about the topics under
examination. This course will continue for both sessions and can be freely taken as one or both segments.
“Lecture et conversation” - Le temps des secrets
Playwright Marcel Pagnol’s Le temps des secrets, a sequel to La gloire de mon père and Le château de ma mère, describes beautifully the Provence of the late
19th century in this touching portrayal of Marcel’s adolescent friendships and first love. Course discussions will be in French.
Book: Le temps des secrets, Mass Market Paperback/Editions de Fallois. ISBN: 978-2-87706-509-2 (Please use this edition only).
Can be purchased online (Shoenhoff’s bookstore, Boston or Amazon…)
Current Events
The class will be for intermediate to advanced level students and will concentrate on engaged conversations around events that have occurred within the past
6 months. Students will be shown videos from francophone television (Canada, Africa, Switzerland Belgium and France mainly) to analyze the content and
discuss opinions. The students will get a chance to learn about and discuss well known events and less publicized events in the francophone world from radio
excerpts and print.
Some of the topics will be the state of the province address, by Quebec Prime Minister Jean Charrest, the upcoming Canadian general elections, the general
elections in Haiti, the recent events in North Africa and more. One topic will be covered each class. Summer session II topics will be posted on the web site.
Film et conversation.
The film class will run for 6 weeks from May 16 to June 24 on Thursdays from 5:45pm to 7:45pm.
The class will be for intermediate to advanced level students and will concentrate on engaged conversations using 3 films that received the most prestigious movie award of all, the
"Palm d'Or" of the Cannes film festival. The films will be viewed in part (1 film over 2 classes) and students will engage in discussion over the content, philosophy, environment,
characters and language. There will be 2 French movies ("Entre les Murs", 2008 and "Un Homme et une Femme", 1966) and one Belgian movie ("L'enfant", 2005).
Summer session II’s theme will be “Le Festival de Cannes”
