2008-2009 Giving Report - Maui Preparatory Academy
MAUI PREPARATORY ACADEMY ‘OHANA GIVING REPORT JULY 1, 2008 – JUNE 30, 2009 Maui Preparatory Academy is fully accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC). S CHOOL M ISSION Maui Preparatory Academy provides a superior educational program in a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment. We promote character development, community service, and the values of sustainability. We foster a love of learning while instilling academic excellence, artistic expression, athletic achievement and the skills necessary for success in the 21st century. 2008-2009 GIVING SUMMARY Aloha Maui Prep ‘Ohana, UNRESTRICTED Mahalo and congratulations to everyone for a great school year in 2008-2009! It was a year full of hard work and dedication on the part of everyone in our Maui Prep ‘Ohana. I want to personally thank each of you for ensuring that this wonderful school continues to grow and thrive and enrich the lives of our students. The success of our fundraising efforts last year, beginning with the Annual Fund Drive, was nothing short of phenomenal for a school of our size and age. In its second year, the Annual Fund, under the stellar leadership of Dean Otto, set new records in donor participation: 100% of our Board of Trustees, 100% of our Faculty & Staff and 91% of our Parents made gifts. This clearly demonstrates the extraordinary level of support the school receives from our ‘ohana. By the end of the year, 183 donors contributed $175,275 in unrestricted gifts, $376,678 in restricted gifts and $580,018 in loan guarantee interest payments from our MPA Angels. And there was more … the elegant and memorable Jingle Bell Ball raised $107,486 for the school, and the fun-filled Pueo Scramble raised an additional $43,880. All told, Maui Prep’s fundraising efforts in 2008-2009 raised a total of $1,283,337 – wow! The 2008-2009 school year marked the continued development of Maui Prep as we completed our Strategic Plan 2008-2011. The Strategic Plan was an enormous community effort that identified the critical issues facing the school and created goals and objectives to address each of these issues. Parents, trustees, students, faculty, administrators and community members all had a voice in creating this Plan. The Plan was approved in January 2009 by the Board of Trustees and has become the road map for the future of Maui Prep. The year also began with the opening of a new two-classroom building to house our expanding school and the addition of our 11th grade class. In MIL sports, we sent our first athletes to State Championships in Cross Country, Swimming and Golf. The Maui Prep drama tradition continued with the Lower School production of 101 Dalmatians and the Middle and Upper School production of Bugsy Malone. Our students ably represented the school at the statewide Science Olympiad as well as other competitions throughout the year. College admissions officers made their first visits to our campus in preparation for our first graduating class in 2010. Finally, Maui Prep was honored to receive a Schools of the Future grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation to help the school develop ways to better prepare our students for the challenges of the 21st century. This was an exceptional school year because of the combined efforts of our volunteers, our donors, our faculty and staff, our parents and our trustees. Each played an important role in its success. With this solidly established foundation, we can now look forward to another terrific year. Mahalo, George C. REID FOUNDATION $10,000 OTHER $31,815 To Our Maui Prep ‘Ohana: Thank you, thank you, thank you for a successful ’08-’09 Annual Fund Drive. To put it in perspective, here are some statistics that say a lot about our Maui Prep ‘Ohana: Annual Fund Percentage of Participation Comparison 91% 100% Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) 36.4% 57.3% National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) 61.2% 69.5% 100% 83.4% 93.5% Participants Maui Preparatory Academy Parents Faculty & Staff Trustees As you can see, Maui Prep nailed it last year in our effort to expand participation in the Annual Fund. This is an extraordinary accomplishment, one that we can all take pride in. So, again, I say thank you to all who made it possible. Gifts to the Annual Fund help us connect the pieces of the puzzle that comprise the Maui Prep educational experience. Your Annual Fund gifts are used to fund enhancements to our academic program, support our dynamic arts, technology and athletic programs, and maintain our beautiful campus. Most importantly, your gifts support the recruitment and retention of the outstanding teachers who educate our children. The Annual Fund enables Maui Prep to maintain a superior educational experience at a time when educational programs are being cut nationwide. A thriving Annual Fund Drive is an important cornerstone of Maui Prep’s financial foundation and a key indicator of a successful school. Last year’s results are impressive and clearly demonstrate our ’ohana’s dedication to Maui Prep. We know that other people and institutions are much more willing to give to our school when they see us stretching to help ourselves. Consequently, your support last year and every year goes a long way toward shaping the future of our school. Now we are poised to build upon last year’s success as we launch the 2009-2010 Annual Fund Drive. Please join me in welcoming and thanking Kelly and Doug Pitzer who have assumed the leadership of this most important all-school event. Under their guidance, I know that we can look forward to another terrific Annual Fund Drive and school year. With all of us working MAHALO TO OUR ANNUAL FUND VOLUNTEERS together, the sky’s the limit! This loan refinanced the original $4.2 million construction debt and provided an operating cushion of $1.8 million in the form of a line of credit to sustain the school during challenging economic times. First to step forward, with each guaranteeing $2.5 million of the loan, were: Tom Rosenquist Family Scott & Elaine Shoemaker These wonderful donors were then joined by the following generous families who, together, helped to guarantee the remaining $1 million of the loan: Chuck & Gail Bergson Robert & Corie Bluh Jim & Michelle Falk Mary Anne Fitch & Nam Le Viet Lisa & Warren Gibson Dana & Greg Howeth Brett & Elena MacDonald Jurg & Linda Munch Dean & Michelle Otto Maui Preparatory Academy is incredibly fortunate to have a group of visionaries whose deep and steadfast commitment to Maui Prep has caused them to make extraordinary gifts to the school. Tom, one of Maui Prep’s founders, is a parent and trustee of the school as well as a past President of the Board. When asked what has inspired him to contribute so significantly to Maui Prep, Tom said, “What could possibly be more important than the education and development of our children? What we have created at Maui Prep will provide a pathway to success for many in our community for years to come. It’s a terrific feeling, knowing that I’m helping to make that happen.” Tom made his first gift to Maui Prep in December 2004, prior to the school’s opening in the fall of 2005. His most recent contribution of $125,000 has brought his total giving to Maui Prep to $1,075,818. In talking about Rosenquist’s outstanding generosity towards the school, Headmaster George Baker said, “Tom has been an extraordinary supporter of Maui Prep since the beginning. He has devoted literally thousands of volunteer hours and more than $1 million since 2004 to ensure that our school will continue to grow and thrive. We are truly fortunate to have him as a member of our Maui Prep ‘Ohana.” The Third Annual Jingle Bell Ball (Shoot for the Stars) was a rousing success. Leadership Team Gail Bergson, Corie Bluh, Lisa DeSalvio, Denise Fleetham, Tess Lerback and Jurg Munch and their committees created a fabulous event which raised lots of money for the school. Many thanks to all of our sponsors, donors and attendees for helping us raise over $100,000 for our students.
