“May the peak be with you!”
I
It has been a while since we last
published our Antattler newsletter.
This is for no reason other than
we believed it appropriate to scale
back from a quarterly to a halfyearly.
2015 has been a busy year and although the industry
has come under renewed stresses and strain, not all of
which are of our own doing, with very little changing in
the macro-economy to encourage business to improve,
never mind grow. Load shedding has become a way of
life for most of us, privately and in business, despite
some recent progress in stabilising power supply.
This coupled with the recent collapse of the rand
has presented some new challenges as our costs are
escalating, given that almost every consumable our
industry uses every day is imported. Times are tough and
the light at the end of the tunnel might just have moved
a little further away.
From a local paper supply perspective the decision by
Sappi to dispose of their paper machines at Enstra
(Springs) brings to an end an nearly 80 year era. While
the new owners of PM2 at Enstra plan to continue
supplying a small range of papers, by and large, this
marks the end of commodity print-paper product
manufacture by Sappi, and in particular, uncoated woodfree papers in sheets. (Mondi continues to manufacture,
but supplies only on reels.)
Therefore the printing industry’s dependence has fallen
further on imported products; be they mainstream
uncoated, coated or, of course, specialty papers – all of
which are now at the mercy of the rand. Global paper
prices have not seen any major escalation over the past
year, but producers are pushing for increases in both
Europe and the United States of America (USA) in the
coming months.
Against this backdrop prices in South Africa have moved
substantially by over 10% so far this year, with another
increase likely before the end of the year should the rand
remain at its current weaker levels.
The real challenges facing the paper and print industries
remain ever-present in the face of advancing technology,
social media and perhaps more so, an emerging
generation (or generations) that don’t make the time to
read from paper. And they don’t have to – it’s all in the
palm of their hands, wherever they go. Next time you’re
out to dinner, take a look around you and you will see
people absorbed by their screens.
Chat
by Raymond Waldeck
“Two Sides”, an initiative started in the UK about
three years ago and to which Printing SA has aligned
themselves, is an organisation committed to promoting
the use of paper, and challenging the many misleading,
even false claims against paper and print many
companies adopt to promote their products and services.
For example, my bank imposes a levy to continue
providing me with a printed and mailed statement every
month. Had it not been for the SA Post Office fiasco I
might have challenged this more vigorously!
Two Sides is concerned with the incorrect and damaging
impressions being made as digital communication
channels are promoted as the “greener” alternative to
printed media.
Their mission is to encourage clients, in the environmental
context at least, to re-think their preference for electronic
communication, as it has not been proven that the
electronic option results in a lower carbon footprint. In
reality all channels have an environmental impact, but
print remains a vital and effective element of the modern
marketing and communication mix.
Martyn Eustace, Director Two Sides, makes the following
point: “Considering all the environmental costs of
electronic communication, print and paper may well
be the most environmentally sustainable way to
communicate.”
That said, the misnomers regarding the paper industry
are plentiful, with hacking down forests being the most
common, but what the general public may not know is
paper-makers are arguably the most responsible forest
managers in the world. Only 11% of harvested trees
are used in the manufacture of paper. The wider uses
of harvested timber are in the construction, energy and
mining industries.
Foresters also replant as much as four times more trees
than are harvested. For example in Europe the area of
forest cover has grown by 30% since 1950 and has been
increasing at a rate of 1,5 million football pitches every
year.
I realise I might be preaching to the converted, but my
request is we support the motives of Two Sides. It is a
worthwhile, and perhaps the only globally coordinated,
initiative that is committed to the sustainability of this
industry in any real meaningful and visible way.
We need to embrace it and optimise the opportunities
it will present – “green-washing” is fine, but for the right
reasons and with the right information, which is very
often not the case for the paper and print industry.
Moving on, the FESPA exhibition has come and gone.
Thank you to all our clients, customers and friends for
visiting our stand. The VUTEk H1625 display and demo
created a great deal of interest which, we are pleased
to advise has already resulted in a successful sale. Much
interest, too, was shown in the Esko Kongsberg XN 24
digital finishing and cutting table, which has also been
sold. Antalis will have a presence at Drupa 2016 and will
not exhibit at FESPA Africa 2016.
Traditional “peak” season and the New Year is upon us,
with many of us holding thumbs that it will bring some
relief to the strained conditions in which we currently
find ourselves.
We thank you for your ongoing and valued support.
“May the peak be with you!”
Best regards d
Raymon

Full house for Loeries’
Creative Use of Paper
O
One Gold, a Silver and three
Bronze Loeries were awarded
in the Creative Use of Paper
category, sponsored by Antalis
South Africa (Pty) Ltd, at the
Loerie Awards.
Held in late August in Durban, the Loeries Awards are part
of a year-round focus on creative inspiration. The Awards
showcase and award the best locally and in the Middle East
in the creative economy.
This year Loeries introduced a separate category under
Communication and Design for the Creative Use of Paper
award. It was rewarding to see five Loeries awarded in this
category.
The past 30 years have seen Antalis South Africa (Pty) Ltd
involved in the creative world of visual imaging.
Its partnership with the Loeries forms a very important part
of this, especially the Creative Use of Paper Award.
“The Awards serves to remind just how creative paper can
be and by doing so, the results it can yield for agencies and
their clients,” says Caroline Coughlan, Marketing Manager,
Antalis.
Gold was awarded to Havas Worldwide for Ubci Groupe
Bnp Paribas. The campaign produced recycled boxes and
note pads for students.
The Silver Loerie was presented to Jupiter Drawing Room,
South Africa, for the Cape Town Design Indaba Banner for
its client Interactive Africa. The 3D design was printed on
Xanita Board which is officially distributed by Antalis South
Africa (Pty) Ltd. The Banner was illustrated by Carla Kreaser
and Sarah Gregg-Mcdonald and Alwine Nolte assisted on
design.
The Agency also won a Bronze Loerie for its Cape Town
Design Indaba postcards printed on Ivory Board, for
Interactive Africa for the Design Indaba.
Another Bronze Loerie was awarded to 360eight,
a solutions-based integrated advertising agency for Paper
Art for Trudon (publishers of the Yellow Pages).
Y&R SA’s Night Tours for Johannesburg Zoo posters took
the final Bronze Loerie. Its beautifully crafted posters allow
the shape of the animals head to appear when you shine a
light onto to it. The paper used for the project was Curious
Matter Goya White 380gsm and the posters were die-cut.
Antalis to distribute

At recently held launches in
Johannesburg, Cape Town and
Durban, Antalis South Africa
(Pty) Ltd and Sappi announced a
partnership to distribute Sappi’s
Atelier™ Folding Box Board (FBB).
Michael Rushworth, Product Manager Antalis South Africa (Pty)
Ltd, who welcomed the guests at the launches, says Antalis is
thrilled to partner with Sappi on Atelier™. “Sappi and Antalis
South Africa (Pty) Ltd have a long history of partnering on
particular products, such as Magno and Masuga. With Atelier™
we believe that we have a grade that will set the benchmark
for FBBs in South Africa. The grade fits exceptionally well into
our offering of cost effective, quality products.”
Atelier™ is a GC1 FBB with high bulk, an ultra silky smooth
coating and a really white reverse side, with a lick of coating.
Available from 220gsm to 350gsm, with a bulk 1,72. This
allows you to reduce grammage without sacrificing stiffness
and thickness. “Sappi have shown that they are no longer just
an art paper manufacturer, but that they have grown into a first
rate packaging board producer,” says Rushworth. "While there
exist other products that play in the same field as Atelier™, its
quality and yield, makes it unique and competitive,” he adds.
Antalis also undertook their own trials and market research
with their customers. “Our trials determined that the paper
produces an exceptional print quality and runnability, with
great rigidity and foldability. We have no doubt that this board
will set the standard for excellence in this market. This product
will add a perception of quality to any packaging or graphical
board print job.”
As Lars Scheidwieler, Product Group Manager for Rigid
Packaging at Sappi, stated in his presentation, this multi-ply
board supplies ultimate brightness, purity and class. This
product was his brain child and this was reflected in the
passion he showed when presenting the product. Atelier™
took three years of research and development to ensure it met
market requirements. It is produced at Sappi’s Maastricht Mill,
Netherlands.
As can be deduced from its name, which means workshop or
studio, especially for artists and designers, the product is a
convergence of ideals and craftsmanship. Antalis and Sappi

In March this year Antalis South Africa
(Pty) Ltd introduced Curious Matter in
South Africa. Launches took place in
Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
The paper, part of the highly innovative
Curious Collection, from Arjowiggins
Creative Papers, is an exciting part of the
multi-sensory Curious Collection brand.
It has a pallet of six rich matt and homogenous colours:
• three lights (Ibizenca Sand, Andina Grey and Goya White)
for multiple applications,
• one deep pure intense black (Black Truffle) for high-end
uses, and
• two beautiful deep colours (Désirée Red and Adiron Blue).
Each paper has been carefully honed, aesthetically and
physically, to have resonance in lifestyle-oriented markets –
from food and drink, beauty and cosmetics, to luxury goods
and engaging environments.
Described as a “gloriously tactile ‘avant-garde’ paper”,
and an “intriguing patented paper”, it is a one-of-the-kind,
indescribable texture, which makes it very addictive to touch.
Caroline Coughlan, Marketing Manager, Antalis South Africa
(Pty) Ltd says it is the startling texture of the paper with its
rich matt, ultra-pigmented homogenous surface that makes
Curious Matter such an intriguing paper. “This makes the
paper both surprising and revolutionary… and will spark
everyone’s creativity. By your second touch, it will evoke
creative thoughts of how it can be transformed. This paper
inspires to create,” she says.
Its robust nature and four weights (125, 135, 270 and
380gsm) make it an ideal partner for all applications where
an eye-catching, contemporary look and irresistible feel will
make a difference. From food and drink and beauty and
cosmetics, to luxury goods and engaging Environments;
there is one stock of Curious Matter fitting your needs,
aesthetically and physically.

Jerome Noyelle, Brand Manager at Arjowiggins Creative
Papers in France, calls the paper is a “tactile experience like
no other”. “When someone touches the paper for the first
time, most of the time they feel intrigued and sometimes
they even hesitate before touching the paper again.”
It is already used by numerous international brands, from
TV broadcasters through design magazines, to museum
catalogues and luxury end-users. “Curious Matter is an ideal

Rugby World Cup
Poster – Stick to
the game Plan
F
In August Antalis South Africa (Pty) Ltd launched a poster featuring
the Rugby World Cup inviting clients to Stick with their team in the
Rugby challenge 2015.
Of course the theme was ’In the Land of the Roses’ which was beautifully
illustrated by Sunshine Gun. Added was a card printed on YUPOTako®
with kiss-cut circular flags for all the participating countries to add to the
pools. These non-adhesive stickers can be moved around the poster as the
counties positions change. These, together with t-shirts, were presented to
printers for events they would host during the Rugby World Cup.
Riaan Bester, who was appointed General Manager Packaging
Antalis South Africa (Pty) Ltd in June this year, says Antalis offers
the market a range of packaging solutions. “We offer protective
packaging for food safety and tamper proof bags (or security
bags) as well as medical and evidence bags, although these are
a very niche part of our business.”
The poster was printed by ColourPress and featured three spot colours –
silver metallic red and black – as well an UV varnish. The poster was also
embossed. All of these features promoted the benefits of Hi-Q Titan.

Flexographic
Solutions
Flexographic printing may have been perceived
as rudimentary in quality, but this is certainly not
the case today.
Ben Britz, Product Manager Plate and Press Antalis, manages the full
product offering for this portfolio. Since his entry into the industry
in 1991, he has often seen customer uncertainty of which plate is
best suited for specific requirements. So, Antalis recently launched
its Kodak Sonora plate guide. For your own guide – ‘Just ask
Antalis’. He added that more and more customers are moving
toward process free plates.
“The Kodak Sonora plate is a major development – offering
customers a significant saving compared to current digital offset
plates. It removes the need for a plate processing unit and
combines savings of all the elements associated with processing
plates,” he says.
Customers can save on chemicals and the associated disposal
cost thereof, water, electricity, manpower, on the lessor physical
space required for the processing equipment and all other related
maintenance costs.
Kodak was the first of the plate manufacturers to launch a
commercially viable process free plate to the market. Antalis South
Africa (Pty) Ltd has completed a number of successful equipment
installations in the local market in all sectors. “This is proving to be a
very successful plate solution for customers in both web, offset and
sheet-fed markets. This, coupled with our technical and after sales
support, makes Antalis a force to be reckoned with,” he says.
This is according to Kevin Tucker, National Sales Manager
Flexographic, Antalis South Africa (Pty) Ltd. Appointed in
March this year, he says over the past decade flexographic
printing’s quality has improved and this has enabled it
to compete with Gravure printing. “Add to this it's cost
effectiveness, it is no surprise that it is taking over the
market.”
Antalis flexing with the Internationals
He says the growth in this area of packaging is particularly
in food packaging. “This is due to the growth in population
in the world, especially in Africa and the need for lower
cost packaging.”
The name covers a diverse range of system solutions for industrial and professional applications, close to 300 products
for consumers. “Antalis will specialise in the Flexographic segment supplying high quality print consumable solutions such
as flexographic plate mounting tape and roll splicing tape that deliver consistent results," says Kevin Tucker, National Sales
Manager Flexographic, Antalis South Africa (Pty) Ltd.
He adds that Flexographic Printing is a great solution
for packaging because of its wide variety of printing
applications – ranging from printing on corrugated, plastic,
and many other materials, for example cereal boxes to
labels and toothpaste packaging.
For more information and samples contact Kevin Tucker or ‘Just ask Antalis’.
“The flexographic printing process also give you an almost
complete product at the end of the process as it includes
lamination, varnish, die-cutting, foiling and embossing, etc.
– all processes that previously would be done after the
printing process was completed.”

“And improvements in the field keep coming. In the
third quarter of 2015 we launched 'Du Pont Easy Plate
technology as well as Cyrel Easy Plate with 'flat-top-dot'
technology built into it. This means a better image with
improved quality without the need for expensive work
flows or equipment.”
For more information on this exciting
technology – 'Just Ask Antalis'.
DuPont’s DSP plate or (Surface Engineered Plate) has a
chemically treated surface which allows for a higher ink
density and smoother ink lay-down for improved quality,
while Esko, the supplier for CTP systems, also has its CDI
(Cyrel Digital Imager) that allows for high quality digital
flexographic plates, which before were only achievable in
offset or gravure. Esko also offer high definition output
(HD and Full HD), giving a superior image quality print.
Antalis is proud to announce its recent partnering with tesa® SE, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of self-adhesive
product and system solutions in the print and paper market. In August Antalis South Africa (Pty) Ltd was appointed the
national distributor for the tesa® brand in South Africa. Since 1941, the name tesa® has been the umbrella brand used for all
self-adhesive products manufactured by our group of companies.
“It also offers full work flow solutions, which include 3D
proofing solutions such as Esko Studio. This offers a
3D proof, allowing customers to realistically view their
product. For example packaging, such as a bottle with a
label around it, or a folding box. Esko also provide specific
plug-ins for Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
that allow for automated corrections of designs for the
Flexographic print process," he elaborates.
Antalis is committed to the Flexographic industry
and regularly support the FTASA Awards that honour
flexographic printers in South Africa for excellence in print.
