A Publication of the Upper Midwest Region of The Shelby American Automobile Club THE PONY EXPRESS Spring Show Recap 433 – REGISTERED SHOW CARS 1156 – SPECTATORS 16 – SWAP / CAR CORRAL July 2016 In this issue Car Show Recap, Photos, and Trophy results High Five Tour June Meeting Minutes Upcoming Events New Members Flyers BIR Schedule RA Schedule You’ve Got Mail President’s Corner Where is the Steg? Want Ads Club Contact Info I have to say…….. Simply amazing! Yes, the spring show was an outstanding success. It ranked among one of the best shows ever. Why was that? I’d have to say it’s because many members that have never volunteered to work stepped up. Not to mention all of those that step up year after year. THANK YOU! I also have to say I very much appreciated the help and support we received from AVF. I personally have never witnessed such a smooth new car move in the years that I’ve been a member. I did observe a few things I believe we can improve on. To name a few, we probably could have manned the show car entrance a little earlier and made sure they had supplies such as sticky notes for class I.D. on the windshields. A few more people to assist with show car parking earlier in the day. But all in all an exceptional show! I believe we have made significant progress and built on past success in running the show. The Registration went to the computer this year. I was told this was a significant time saver. I believe another nice touch this year was members at the exit gates thanking people as they left. Thanks to those members that assisted in that effort. My vision when I volunteered to chair was to have someone take responsibility for each aspect. A person to oversee each specific segments, co-chair for parking, registration, pre-class and so on. That person could also do any of those jobs but assist in signing volunteers for each of the positions. We plan to meet soon to discuss possible changes and improvements. I heard many times the food line was too long. Some classes are too large. Not enough people parking show cars early on. Why is there Chevy powered vehicles in an all Ford powered show? The show is too long. Again, all of you should feel major accomplishment as the show this year was one of our best. But I truly believe we can improve on it. I plan to continue as show chairmen next year. Can we top it? I think we can! Thank you, thank you, and thank you! Roger Stolley Hi Everyone, Thanks again for all your hard work on the car show. It was extremely well organized and everything from moving the cars to setup, appearance, attendance and the weather was excellent! We couldn't have had a better day and all your hard work paid off. We really appreciate what the club and the car show does for the dealership and Ford. Congratulations on another successful year and one of the best shows yet! Thanks, Chris CAR SHOW…The Night Before Volunteers moved cars and filled goody bags, then enjoyed pizza and cookies and conversation. Thanks Mike Ackerman for photos…also see full album from show (90 photos 5 videos) thanks to Sandy Beck, photographer, and Chuck Anderson. https://flic.kr/s/aHskCmdVMr CAR SHOW Time of show was 9AM, but chaos ensued by 7!! Workers adapted and pitched in everywhere! New volunteers learned quickly and did a GREAT job!! Thanks to everyone…wish I could post photos of all, but space is limited. You are ALL greatly appreciated! HUGE thanks to the Apple Valley Fire Department for their demonstration. Once again this year, they captivated the crowd. Fun photo submission from Sue Lindberg: Different signs of the Mustang “I meant to take all of them-but it was too big of a job and I had to help at the gate.” 2016 All-Ford Show Results Class 100 - Pre-1960 stock (all cars) 1957 red/black Ford Retractable 1934 ascot maroon Ford Roadster Cabriolet 1922 blue Ford Model T Touring 1st 106 Gary Chapman 2nd 110 Bob Grant 3rd 111 Jerry Mattson Class 200 - 1967-73 Cougar stock 1st 202 Rod & Sandy LaBahn 1969 yellow Mercury Cougar Eliminator coupe 2nd 204 Chad Peters 1967 green Mercury Cougar XR7 GT coupe 3rd 203 Ken Jones 1968 saxony yellow Mercury Cougar XR7 coupe 1st 302 Lyle Sumner 2nd 301 Matt Vacek 3rd 305 Karl Flick Class 300 - Lincoln thru 2015 stock 1979 blue Lincoln Collector Series sedan 1997 silver Lincoln Town Car Cartier 1939 black Lincoln Zephyr coupe 1st 407 Gene Poole 2nd 402 Tom Howard 3rd 403 Don McCormick Class 400 - Trucks Pre-1980 stock 1949 green Ford F-1 pickup 1964 white Ford Econoline pickup 1970 blue Ford Ranchero pickup Class 500 - Trucks 1980-2015 stock 1995 black Ford F150 SVT Lightning 1984 black Ford Bronco 2003 silver Ford F150 pickup 1st 503 Bryan Bicknese 2nd 508 Josh Tesch 3rd 507 Saul Perez 1st 601 Bryan Harp 2nd 602 Dale Jacobson 3rd 603 Mike Nichols Class 600 - 1960-2015 Compact stock 1964 red Mercury Comet Cyclone hardtop 1977 silver Ford Pinto wagon 1978 dove gray Ford Granada 2-door 1st 703 Phillip Schmidt 2nd 704 Clark McKenney 3rd 708 Larry Werner Class 700 - 1960-2015 Midsize stock 1970 coral Ford Torino GT sportsroof 1970 orange Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 1969 gulf stream blue Ford Torino GT hardtop 1st 801 Martha Davies 2nd 806 Tim Conrad 3rd 809 Jerry Germscheid Class 800 - 1960-2015 Full-size stock 1963 red Ford Galaxie convertible 1964 silver mist black Ford Galazie 500 fastback 1966 gold Ford 7 Litre 1st 906 Duane Saunders 2nd 902 John Childers 3rd 903 Rick Nielson 1st 1005 Jeff Mattson 2nd 1014 Kay Itzin 3rd 1004 Bob Hollister 1st 1106 Dave & Deb Green 2nd 1109 Jerry Mike 3rd 1107 Tim Brunner Class 900 - Thunderbird stock 1956 white Ford Thunderbird 2 door 1955 green Ford Thunderbird coupe 1990 black Ford Thunderbird SC coupe Class 1000 - 1965-66 Mustang stock 1965 red Mustang fastback 1965 red/white Mustang 1965 black Mustang coupe Class 1100 - 1967-68 Mustang stock 1967 black Mustang fastback 1968 black Mustang fastback 1967 bright red Mustang fastback Class 1200 - 1969-70 Mustang stock 1st 1204 Dave Lebeis 1970 pastel blue Mustang Boss 429 2nd 1210 Tony & Julie Huneke 1969 calpyso coral Mustang Mach I 3rd 1209 Ron Danielson 1969 red Mustang fastback 1st 1305 Jim Bakken 2nd 1309 Tim Garant 3rd 1304 Charles Bonanno Class 1300 - 1971-73 Mustang stock 1972 gold Mustang fastback 1973 viper red Mustang sports roof 1971 red Mustang Mach 1 fastback Class 1400 - 1974-86 Mustang stock 1st 1404 Maria & Carl Erickson 1978 black/gold Mustang Cobra II coupe 2nd 1401 Bob Rose 1979 pewter Mustang hatchback 3rd 1406 Dale Jacobson 1977 white Mustang II Cobra II 1st 1502 Brownie Ekenberg 2nd 1506 Mark Johnson 3rd 1504 Brian Bathwell Class 1500 - 1987-93 Mustang stock 1987 red Mustang convertible 1989 black Mustang convertible 1989 red Mustang GT 1st 1608 Brian Jacobsen 2nd 1607 David Rausch 3rd 1601 Jeff Lehn Class 1600 - 1994-04 Mustang stock 2003 azure blue Mustang Mach 1 2001 dark green Mustang Bullit 2004 yellow Mustang GT convertible 1st 1722 Nick Loiacono 2nd 1712 Jana Kulseth 3rd 1710 Paul Lommen Class 1700 - 2005-15 Mustang stock 2014 gotta-have-it green Mustang Coyote coupe 2008 blue Ford Saleen Mustang fastback 2015 orange Mustang fastback Class 1800 - 1993-04 SVT Cobra Mustang stock 1st 1812 Matt Jensen 2004 orange Mustang Cobra coupe 2nd 1803 Carson Turnquist 2003 gray Mustang Cobra coupe 3rd 1804 Dan & Lynn Nicewander 1995 white Mustang Cobra R 1st 1911 Gary Allen 2nd 1910 Troy Kruger 3rd 1901 Kevin Reich Class 1900 - 2006-15 Shelby Mustang 2007 grabber orange Shelby GT 500 coupe 2006 black Shelby GT Hertz 2012 blue Shelby GT 500 Class 2000 - 1965-70 Shelby Mustang, ORIGINAL Cobra, Pantera, Ford GT 1st 2001 Steven Casperson 2005 Ford GT 2nd 2002 Paul Perleberg 1986 Detomaso Pantera GT5 3rd 2003 Steve Goubic 2005 Ford GT 1st 2104 Dennis Harper 2nd 2105 A. The 7th Annual High Five Tour will be at Apple Valley Ford on Monday, July 11, 2016 from 5 to 7 PM. They will be driving the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350. Mark your calendars, come and sign the car and show your support for our club charity, Wounded Warriors Family Support. UMRSAAC July meeting will follow in the AVF conference room with pizza being brought in. Wounded Warrior Family Support I met with Ron Julianelle, the High Five Tour Coordinator and Colonel John Folsom from the Wounded Warrior Family Support on Monday, June 6, in their office in Omaha, NE. We had a very good conversation about the WWFS and High Five Tour. We went to lunch and they invited me to an event on Tuesday night that the car would be at. It was a very good turnout. I met a few of the members from the Omaha Mustang Club. Two of the members of that club are going to be bringing the Mustang GT 350 to Apple Ford Lincoln in Apple Valley on Monday, July 11. That same night we will hold our monthly club meeting at the dealership. They feel bad that they would not be able to have the car for our August show. They will still try to make that happen next year. I am going to get information for the 2017 season, if anyone is interested, to take the car to some of their events. This may or may not be a Mustang. Chris Gulbrandson and Brian McCulley, from the dealership, are very excited about having the car at Apple Ford Lincoln and for us to have our club meeting at their dealership. Mike Ackerman PS: I was on my way to a job I was working at so I thought I would stop by. My job took me to prison but they did let me back out. May 2015 Hot Rod Magazine named this the “Most Beautiful Dragster Ever Built” Now owned by Steve Andersen of Minneapolis. Tom Hoover and Doc Halladay were both there signing posters. Doc Halladay also drove this car at one time. Asked Tom Hoover to sign a photo of my Roush on the starting line at BIR (Wednesday Night Drags), he looked at photo funny then looked at me and asked if he could sign it Mopar’s Forever…. we got a good chuckle… told him he could sign it however he wanted. Both great guys. My memories of Tom Hoover are as a kid seeing the Showtime Funny Car. The victory comes 50 years after Ford's first overall victory in 1966!!! Congratulations to all Blue Oval supporters and fans!!! PRESIDENT’S CORNER At one time or another in our lives, we have been told that if you live long enough, nothing that happens in the world should surprise you. Well, recently, I was just about knocked off my feet. One of my co-workers (and fellow car guy, even though they are the German ones with the four rings in the grill), lost his 91 year-old father. I had only met him on two occasions, but he seemed like a very nice gentleman, a veteran, and quite the story teller---something Brad has continued in the family tradition. Anyway, the funeral/memorial service was held at the beautiful Basilica of St. Mary's. Those of you who have been in The Basilica, know what I am talking about. Due to a previous business commitment, I arrived about ten minutes before the service was to begin. Being the anal retentive sort that I am, I found a parking spot on the street to avoid possible door dings if I parked in the adjacent parking lot. It was about a block walk to the church. Seemed like a good idea at the time. The service and meal that followed lasted about 2-1/2 hours. When I came out of the church it was raining lightly, so I stepped up my walking to stay as dry as possible. When I approached my car, I noticed a piece of paper under my wiper blade. A parking ticket I thought. Damn! Turns out, despite my efforts to avoid damage to my car, I never thought about someone hitting my parked car! My left front quarter panel had gotten hit by someone using the adjacent driveway to turn around. A piece of their outside mirror cover was laying in front of my car. The dent did not seem very big, but enough to make me mad! You start to think, why me? Increased insurance premiums, mismatched body panels and paint, having to get a rental car while mine is in the shop, etc., etc. Double damn!! That was before I took a look at that piece of paper under the wiper blade. Turns out, it was a note-not from the guy that hit my car, but from a young lady who witnessed the moron hit my car, and take off! She wrote down the license plate number, and make of car, along with her phone number. She even went so far as to call the Minneapolis Police to report it. She was told there was nothing they could do because she was not the owner of the car. She felt terrible, there was nothing else for her to do, but leave me the note. I called her when I got home, and she offered to help if I wound up in court. She gave me her permission to give her phone number to the police and my insurance company. I was speechless!! I thanked her and told her that what she had done was very admirable, and that her parents had done a great job in raising her! I have yet to hear from the Minneapolis Police Department, but my insurance company apparently has, and they have told me to go ahead and get my car fixed. Oh yeah, that little dent - try $2700!!! But I will have to pay my $500 deductible. Once they get him and his insurance company to pay everything, I'll get my deductible back. I'll believe that when it happens. I don't understand what has happened to our society - especially to the "Millennial Generation" where the world apparently revolves around them, and they don't have to take any responsibility for their actions, like driving properly! To me, this is a classic example of that behavior. While I greatly appreciate what this young lady did in reporting everything to me, it is sad to think that the person who is responsible is still trying to wiggle out of the whole thing. While this is not a life altering experience, but it has really opened my eyes somewhat. In a time where there is so much division in our society, we need to go back to thinking how some actions do have an effect on others. This young lady could have just kept on walking; she didn't owe me anything. But as she told me, what he did was wrong and he should not get away with it. Now it is my responsibility to pay it forward to the next person, whenever that situation presents itself. I hope to meet this young lady soon, and plan to give her a gift card as a small token of my thanks. I also hope to meet her parents to thank them for raising a good kid!! Hope you get out soon to drive something fun!! See you all soon. Mike Identify where ‘The Steg’ is in the monthly photos. The more precise the better.
