AUGUST 2011 2011 OFFICERS PRESIDENT Becky Field 480-813-6838 beckyfield@q.com VICE PRESIDENT Sharon Maloley 602-448-8138 smaloley@solarconceptsaz.com SECRETARY Alyce Ancell 480-983-2510 MEMBER and CAR OF THE MONTH BRENDA & DON WISE We both grew up with Mustangs and have them in our blood! Donnie’s first car was a 65 Coupe 200 6-cyl automatic, dark green. This car stayed with him until after he was married, and unfortunately was traded for a Honda Gold Wing which could be sold for more than the Mustang at the time. The money was used to buy a Honda 350X ATC. Can you believe that!!! Crazy but true. My parents (Ron & JoAnn Johnson – also CMC members) are the original owners of a 64 ½ Coupe with a 260 3-speed. The car was purchased in Ohio and the family of 5 drove across country from Ohio to California in the car, when I was 5 years old – 3 kids in the back seat (we were MUCH smaller then)!. Growing up my parents had their original and acquired 2 more Mustangs. In 1995 Donnie & I bought a 1965 200 6-cyl Convertible from Brenda’s parents. The car needed restoration and we were happy to take on the project. We didn’t know at the time, that the engine had a cracked block, but that’s the way it goes. We restored everything ourselves except for paint & body work. r.ancell@q.com TREASURER JoAnn Martorano 480-969-7884 jdmartorano@yahoo.com SGT. Tom Baird Stewart & Susan Truitt Timmy Nystrom Clyde & Linda Seiber Tim & Anita Francis THE PARKING LOT WORD FROM YOUR PRESIDENT…. Our club has a fall show each year. As of yet no one has come forward to be the show chairman. I have done some preliminary work to find a venue for our show and have found that the Radisson Resort at Fort McDowell has approved in having us there again; car show and banquet on Saturday, October 29. We can plan some kind of hospitality for Friday night and maybe a road trip for Sunday. They will give us a preferred rate at the hotel of $99 a night. NEWS FLASH American muscle cars are actually a big deal in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Despite the notion that the culture in the Middle East hates America, they love our hot rod cars. We have recently written about the efforts of Roush selling their supercharged Mustangs there. Chevrolet sells the Camaro as well. Ford Racing isn’t missing a beat either. Vaughn Gittin Jr. has made more than one appearance in the Middle East, preaching the gospel of drift. Nothing shakes hands with the hearts and minds of other cultures like a good tire smoking burnout that lasts 10 minutes. If there is someone out there interested in chairing the Fall Show, please let me know. Time is of the essence! I also wanted to remind you to save the dates for our Annual Pizza Party on November 5th at Uncle Sam’s and our Christmas Party on December 11th at the Double Tree Inn and Suites. Thank you to all who have helped me to make this year successful so far. Hope to hear from someone soon regarding the Fall Show. Contact Becky Field (480) 813-6838 or beckyfield@q.com. News comes this week from the Geneva auto show that the next generation Mustang will for the first time be developed with more global influence. Autoweek Magazine is reporting that the 2014 Mustang will be designed with input from Ford of Europe, Australia and Asia divisions. The actual design will be headed up in Dearborn, but concepts and ideas will be shared from marketing groups, design and engineering studios globally. Alyce Ancell, Secretary THE FAST LANE 2012 BLUE ANGELS MUSTANG 5.0 Ford and its partners have created another awesome one-off custom Mustang to be auctioned for charity at the EAA AirVenture event in Oshkosh, WI. Ford has released a group of photos that really show up close and personal all the great details inside and out of this special car. The blue chrome paint job alone is stunning. Photos don’t do it all the justice it deserves, but it is truly mystical and reflective. THE FAST LANE BY: Becky Field, President CMC On Saturday, July 9th the Wounded Warriors Tour stopped in Phoenix at Sanderson Ford. The car is quite beautiful as you notice in the pictures. Kool FM was there to promote the tour and Wild West Mustang Club had quite a few cars there as well as cars from our club. Copperstate Mustang Club donated $250.00 to the cause. John was delighted with our donation . Berge Ford was the meeting place last year and next year will probably be another Ford dealer. This is a very worthy cause that we support as the money goes to help returning soldiers from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. Copperstate Mustang Club is honored to be a part of this effort. THE FAST LANE Colonel Folsom, USMCR (retired) and CMC President, Becky Field ON TRACK HAVE YOU EVER FOLLOWED THE LIFE OF A MUSTANG? DETAILS PROVIDED BY: FABRICE SARGET We recently received an email from Orleans France, the happy owner of a ‘67 Convertible Mustang, frost turquoise, as listed on the retail buyers order. The new owner contacted Berge Ford, where the Mustang’s life begins….. Berge Ford dealership in Mesa, AZ sold the 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible “C Code”, engine capacity 289 ci (4,736 liters), V8, 2 Venturi carburetor, 195 bhp (145 kW) a 4 600 tr/min, 390 N.m 2 600 tr/min on December 5, 1966 to Mr. Mayer of Phoenix, AZ. The first license plate number was JCW721 (Arizona 1967). The car was shipped from San Jose (Milpitas) Ford factory on Wednesday, November 16, 1966 and arrived at the dealership on December 3, 1966. The car was delivered to it’s first owner on Monday, December 19, 1966. The exact purchase price was $3,320.78. The various license plates over the first ownership were JCW 721; KJH 070; PHZ 642; ME 4404 and then ECT 763. “Greenie” Then on March 8, 1987 Mr. Mayer sold it to Mr. Heaton of Scottsdale, AZ. Mr. Heaton purchased the Mustang for $5,950 with 91,939 miles. The license plate remained ECT 763. On January 25, 1989 the Mustang was sold to it’s third owner, Mr. Hendershot, the grandfather of “Nikki”, Nicole Florez, who was just 16 years old and had recently passed her driving test on February 21, 1989. Nikki drove the car for the first time on February 17, 1989 to Manuel’s Restaurant for dinner with her grandparents. Nikki named the car “Greenie”. The mileage on February 1, 1989 hit 100,000 miles. Nikki had an accident on May 30, 1990 when the car had to be repaired and repainted in June 1990, to it’s original color. Nikki’s mom, Phoebe, took over the car January 2, 1991 when there was 113,000 miles on the car. She overhauled the engine, crankshaft, pistons, changed to an automatic shift and a sundry of other items, completing the mechanical changes on March 8, 1991. ON TRACK HAVE YOU EVER FOLLOWED CONT’D On February 3, 1995 Nikki and now her husband Mason Nelder bought the car from her mom. Nikki and her husband then moved to Tucson, AZ. Later they moved to Roswell, NM and then to Aliso Viejo, CA. They had the car repainted again on May 23, 2008. The last American license plate number was 5 JMP 824. The Nelder’s sold the Mustang to Mustangs and Fast Fords OC in California on February 7, 2009. Nikki now lives in New Jersey and provided the information of the last garage who worked on the car: Pacific Automotive. On September 11, 2010 a French man, Mr. Levy, bought the Mustang and transported it to France. The last known official mileage was 205,624 miles on June 3, 2010. The actual shown mileage when recently purchased was showing 53,690 miles on July 1, 2011. It is assumed the odometer has been “updated” between June 2010 and July 2011, most probably in France. The actual miles are estimated to be around 210,000 miles, a yearly average of 4,800 miles. On Wednesday, June 29, 2011, Fabrice Sarget of Orleans France purchased the Mustang “Greenie”, and a new life begins. His quest is to locate the original owner, Mr. Lewis P Mayer. If anyone knows of this man or any of his relatives, please contact Fabrice Sarget at sarget.fabrice@orange.fr Fabrice Sarget and son ON TRACK WHAT A GLOBAL MUSTANG REALLY MEANS By Sam Haymart, The Mustang News With my many hats including publisher of TheMustangNews.com, FnSweet.com – the largest Roush Enthusiast forums that exist, and the promoter of Mustangs Across America driving events since 1994, I have had the blessed privilege of rubbing elbows with Mustang enthusiasts from around the country and the world for over 20 years. The thing that has always piqued my interest is the love and passion that our friends from Australia and New Zealand, Europe, the UK and other parts of the world have for the Mustang. While all of us here in America love our pony cars, what it takes to love the Mustang around the globe requires a lot more money, effort, and passion than we have to expend here. I have friends met through Mustangs Across America from Australia, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, and more who have traveled here to the States many times to participate in our cross country drives, and to attend the big MCA events and shows. These people are Mustang fanatics like you cannot believe if you’ve never met them. They own Mustangs, have clubs and shows in their home countries that rival many we have here. And to have Mustangs at home they have to go to great expense, toil and hassle to own and operate them. In Australia and New Zealand the cars must be converted to right-hand drive to be street legal. In other places you can get away without doing so, but in OZ it’s the way of the world. I’ve seen these conversions and even driven them. They are well done but very expensive – especially with the newer cars. Interior and chassis parts have to be modified and manufactured from scratch. I know fellow Mustang enthusiasts through FnSweet.com who own modern day Mustangs and Roush Mustangs in England, Spain, the UAE and in Czechoslovakia. These Mustang enthusiasts modify, customize and tune their cars just as we do here in the States, but pay a much higher price to do so. Imagine embarking on a Mustang build project, ordering up suspension kits, wheels, tires, superchargers, body kits, interior and exterior trim add-ons….and then multiply the cost about 4 times or more when you factor in the shipping overseas and tax duties these Mustang faithful have to pay. And when things go wrong, they have nowhere to turn most often but the online community to get answers to their issues because dealers and parts vendors across the pond are not versed. As we are learning recently that the next generation 2014-2015 Mustang will be going global, designed to be sold and offered en-masse to markets around the world it’s worth stopping for a moment and contemplating what that really means. Most of the stories up to date have been about how that might be a bummer for Americans because “our Mustang” may have design compromises so that it will also appeal to buyers in Europe, the UK, Asia and other continents. Complaints about the smaller engines, the IRS, the smaller size can already be found on many of the Mustang forums. ONTRACK WHAT A GLOBAL MUSTANG REALLY MEANS Cont’d But stop for a second. Think about the doors that will be kicked open by this significant shift that Ford is mounting. The Mustang for the first time in a long time will be offered around the world at Ford dealerships as a regular mass-production model, not some bizarre borderline grey market novelty. It won’t have to be modified by a local importer to be licensed or purchased at a high priced boutique exotic dealer. It can be financed and insured just like any other car a person might buy in their home country. Despite the news that America is this hated commodity around the world, people LOVE our icons. People LOVE the Mustang. And what a better way to reach out and preach the spirit of freedom than through the rumble and rush of the Ford Mustang. And if we are smart, we in the Mustang community will welcome our new Mustang enthusiasts from around the world. We will enthusiastically help them on our forums to find the parts or mods they seek. And we will show them how we do it. If you sell high performance parts, you’d be smart to think about how you are going to tap this new mass market. If you publish Mustang news or run a Mustang forum as I do, you’d be smart to think about how your are going to reach your new readers and welcome new members from around the world who will be poring over your site to learn about the Mustang. And conversely, we will be watching as Mustang enthusiast sects and communities grow in other countries with their own cultures and themes, their own style of customizations, and their own interpretations of what Mustang means to them. We will be watching with a warm glow as our long time friends who have long been Mustang owners around the world finally gain access to the dream in a less expensive and free flowing way we have always enjoyed them here at home. It will be a beautiful thing to see. We had just finished the restoration of the convertible, and were excited to sign-up for our first show! We attended the Hospitality on Friday night, the show on Saturday, and received a trophy! We have been hooked ever since! . In July of 2000 we added our 2nd pony to our corral, a 1965 Blue Fastback. The previous owner had worked on the car himself, and made some improvements that needed to be corrected and upgraded. We worked on that car, but in 2004 a 66 Black Fastback with a 289 4-barrel with long-tube headers, 4-speed, with a sleek look caught our eye. We sold the 65 and replaced it with the black 66. Over the years, we have made many improvements such as changing to a 5-speed transmission, front & rear suspension, sub-frame connectors, sway bars, A/C, Aluminum Radiator, Monte Carlo bar, export brace, SCAT Procar Elite high-back seats, shoulder harnesses, stereo with CD changer, front disc brakes, larger rear drum brakes, dual reservoir master cylinder, and a really cool Ford dip stick (that is Brenda’s favorite!). The Fastback is driven frequently to work, around town, and to various events and shows. We believe that cars are made to be driven and enjoyed! A couple months ago, we sold the Convertible to Donnie’s Cousin in California. He is retired and is able to drive the car much more than we could. They are enjoying it and at least it is still in the family! Since joining the Club, we have been active members and have been fortunate enough to hold positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Board Members for quite a few years. We have Chaired Shows, coordinated events, been members of Show Committees, and help out whenever we can. Although our current work schedules keep us from doing all of the things we want to with the Club, we always enjoy getting together with our long-time CMC family, and meeting new members and friends! We are looking forward to the Flagstaff and Pinetop Shows in September! Happy Trails!
