Humanities Iowa
brings history to life
in Steamboat Rock
By Rick Patrie
News Editor
STEAMBOAT ROCK – A long
time interpretive presenter with Iowa
Living History Farms is coming to
Steamboat Rock this month to make
a presentation based on his research
into the pre-civil war underground
railroad in Iowa.
The presentation entitled “Josiah
Bushnell Grinnell and the Iowa
Underground Railroad” will be
Saturday July 18 at 10 a.m. in the
Steamboat Rock Historical Society
building, the old city hall.
Featured speaker, David Connon
has worked for the Living History
Farm historic center from a number
of years.
The Living History Farms site,
which features period reenactments
of different phases of Iowa Farm
history, is in Urbandale. He has
also worked extensively as a private
and independent researcher and
historian.
Connon is a prolific speaker and
writer of Iowa and mid-1800’s
Iowa history. This time he focuses
on Josiah Bushnell Grinnell who
was a prominent political figure and
participated in the Iowa Underground
Railroad. J.B. Grinnell and other
Grinnell residents helped at least 37
fugitive slaves who passed through
their town before the Civil War.
Not all his neighbors appreciated
his work.
David Connon says he “will tell
David Connon
a story of racism, noble actions,
and conflict.” He will highlight
abolitionist John Brown’s visit to
Grinnell, and Grinnell’s first riot
over the presence of fugitive slaves
in the public school.
It is a story that has special
resonance for people here in Hardin
County, considering the widely
acknowledged role played in the
Underground Railroad by people
living in the New Providence area,
too.
Connon is also an independent
researcher and writer. He has a
Master’s Degree in Education from
Northern Illinois University. His
wife is an Iowa native whose great(continued on page 3)

Volunteers
still needed
by Michaela Kendall
Staff Writer
ELDORA – With less than two
weeks until the big ride arrives, the
RAGBRAI Eldora committee is
making a final call for community
members to volunteer.
They still need help in several
areas, including: Beverage garden,
information centers, shuttle routes,
sanitation and clean up.
If you haven’t already, it’s not
too late to sign up to be a volunteer.
This can be done online, through
the RAGBRAI Eldora website, or
by contacting one of the committee
members.
There will be a Volunteer Meeting
on Monday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at
the South Hardin High School.
The meeting is for all RAGBRAI
volunteers, and it will cover things
such as: how to get around town,
how to check in at the volunteer
command center, who to call if you
can’t make your shift, and more.
After all the basic information is
covered, volunteers will be split into
groups to get specific instructions
from the chairperson whose
committee they are volunteering
for.
Speaking
of
volunteers,
RAGBRAI Eldora has several new
sponsors who have made donations
specifically for volunteers of the
event.
One of the donors, Grundy
County Memorial Hospital, is

Queen of the County Fair
A veteran showman, long active in the livestock and other competitions at the Hardin County Fair, was named queen of the event
for this year. Victoria Butt is the 2015 queen. She came to the fair with the banner of her hometown Iowa Falls. First Runner up for the
competition was Miss Eldora, Emily Mitchell, and Miss Congeniality was Miss Ackley, Rachel Frazier. Pictured is the court for this
year, from the left, Rachel Ostrem, 2014 Hardin County Fair Queen, Victoria Butt, Emily Mitchell and Rachel Frazier. The fair kicked
off with the downtown parade Wednesday night and will continue through Sunday. Look for some news of events in Tuesday’s paper, but the full coverage should be in next Friday’s Index.

ELDORA – If you see what
looks like a grain bin going up in the
parking lot of Anderson Dentistry on
July 21, don’t make an appointment
with the eye doctor.
It is your standard grain bin –
but grain bin become a home for
people who’ve lost theirs in natural
disasters.

based in Eagle Grove and founded by
an Iowa farmer in 2011 – is gearing
up to build a copy of the Sukup Safe

HARDIN-MARSHALL – They
won’t be a captive audience, but they
will be a natural audience.
When RAGBRAI pulls into town
on the 21st of this month enthusiasts
for a new Hardin-Marshall County
recreational trail hope to have a
block long showcase of their project
in place.
It will be only a block long, on the
rail bed just west of Hy-Vee, but trail
enthusiasts say it shouldn’t be hard
to stretch the block out for 30 miles
in your imagination. Until you have
the Iowa River Trail.
If you are a biker you have a lot
to look forward to in the next few
years, as the trail proceeds under
development.
Ever since the Iowa River Railroad
closed down and the rail bed found
its way into the care of the Iowa
Natural Heritage Foundation, local
groups have been envisioning the
trail. Now that the railroad salvage
is done, those interests have taken
ownership of the rail bed.
Thirty miles of multi use trail –
definitely bicycle-friendly – will run
from Steamboat Rock all the way to
downtown Marshalltown.
It will be a few years before fully
complete, but things are rolling.
And in honor of RAGBRAI coming
to Eldora, they have expedited a
block long sample of the trail for
demonstration purposes.
It is a ten-foot-wide paved stretch
with two and five foot crushed rock
sidings. It’s possible thanks to a
single $100,000 donor, Gehrke Inc.,
Quarries, which made a four-year
$25,000-a-year-commitment to the
whole 30 mile plus project.
And to celebrate a little more, the
local trail organizers will be giving
away two new bikes to some lucky
folks on RAGBRAI Tuesday.
They want a lot of the 15,000
visitors to begin keeping tabs on this
part of the country when RAGBRAI
is over. Someday they may count
Hardin and Marshall Counties as
home to one of the premier biking
routes in all of Iowa.

world which actually has been going

in the wake of that earthquake that
devastated Haiti.
The faith based relief project will
erect the home in Eldora on Tuesday
to greet riders on the Great Iowa
event.
They will then quickly take it
down for the move to Cedar Falls the
next day.
If you are at all familiar with the
process for constructing metal grain
bins, you already know exactly how
the project goes up.
The house is a very familiar
format here in Iowa, right out of the

Rec trail demonstration project greets riders
When opportunity
knocks...
by Rick Patrie
News Editor
ELDORA – If ever opportunity came knocking it was this summer, it came knocking calling for all the people who have been involved
in creating a two county long recreational trail
along the route of the old Iowa River Railroad.
They couldn’t have asked for more. Here they
were trying to drum up support, dollars and
interest in the trail that will run from Steamboat Rock to Marshalltown. And suddenly
word came down early this year that the Des
Moines Register Great Bike Ride was going
to make an overnight stop in Eldora. Fifteen
thousand avid bikers. All they needed was a
glimpse of what was in the works along the
Iowa River Line. And the glimpse was poured
this week here in Eldora along a short one
block section of the trail just west of the HyVee. Ten foot of travel area and a two foot and
five foot siding of crushed rock on either side.
Organizers hope the sight of it will inspire a
portion of the riders to lend their support to
the completion of the project.
RAGBRAI greeting goes out in The Ledger
by Rick Patrie
News Editor
Eldora – The Eldora newspapers and helpful advertisers will be
distributing a 20 page tabloid size
greetings section to the participants
in RAGBRAI come July 21. The
idea is to put as many as we can
in their hands as they are planning
their trip from Fort Dodge to Eldora.
And if you look at next Tuesday’s
Ledger you will find what they will
find.
If it’s unique to Eldora and Hardin
County, we have tried to point it out.
And since RAGBRAI always
includes not just an Iowa but a national and international contingent,
Conrad Hardware
102 E. Grundy Avenue, Conrad
we assumed there would be a certain amount of unfamiliarity to work
with.
The special section is addressed to
the visitors for the most part.
Some is about special features of
the town, but on the other hand, a lot
of it is very practical and could be
helpful to local readers, too. Something as big as the arrival of 15,000
visitors to a town of 2,600 creates
logistical challenges, and part of the
purpose of the publication is to put
information into the visitors’ hands
about where to find what.

That includes locations of a whole
cadre of vendors and service units
that will be offering up wares, souvenirs, of course food, and more.
Then there are the instructions everyone will need concerning what to
do in the event of emergencies, particularly rough weather. That means
the locations of shelters and instruction for everything up to evacuations.
Organizers of the RAGBRAI project have been working for several
months to arrange all of this. It has
meant bringing together groups and
individuals who want to lend a hand
in the welcome, but it has also meant
coordinating with the Des Moines
Register staff who do this sort of
thing all but year round, organizing
one ride after another. They have to
deal with everything, right down to
legal issues.
Even now, the local team is still
taking names of people and groups
who would like to volunteer to help
with the welcome.
But to see how local businesses are
saying hello in print, check for the
insert in next Tuesday’s paper. The
idea was to acquaint the visitors with
what is to be found here, not because
they would have time to see it all
in a one day stop, but in hopes they
would maybe take time in the future
to come back for a longer look.
And organizers of the welcome
here say that all of us can lend to the
hospitality if we go the extra mile
to extend a friendly welcome come
July 21.

Relief effort to showcase emergency housing
(continued from page 1)
modified one, which has been turned
into housing for displaced families
in Haiti and other areas around the
world.
GCN has built nearly 150 Safe T
Home® in Haiti alone, 10 in Peru
that are used as a bible camp, and 10
in Kenya to house missionaries.
It takes between 4-6 hours to build a
Safe T Home® and about 2 to take it
down. Global Compassion Network
will build the Safe T Home® in
Eldora on Tuesday, July 21st starting
around 11 a.m. at the Anderson
Family Dentistry at 1906 Edgington
Ave. for RAGBRAI. Volunteers will
take down the home at 6:30 a.m.
on Tuesday, July 22 and then build
the home in Cedar Falls later that
same day. Volunteers are needed!
Please call GCN Domestic Disaster
Relief Director Dennis Anderson at
712-887-0862 to volunteer. Global
Compassion Network volunteer Bob
Hibma, 77, to ride on RAGBRAI
team.
Global Compassion Network
also has a Domestic Disaster Relief
team that responds to disasters
in the Midwest. In 2013, GCN
helped Wayne and Debi Sadler of
Correctionville, IA after an EF4
tornado destroyed their farm. The
Sadlers will be joining GCN during
RAGBRAI where they will help
build the Safe T Home® and share
their story.
In addition, GCN will also have
a team of bikers including 77-yearold Bob Hibma of Sibley who
volunteers on GCN’s Domestic
Disaster Relief team. While Hibma
didn’t start riding until he was 60,
the past few years he has completed
numerous races including the 400mile Natchez Trace Parkway ride
from Nashville, TN to Jackson, MS
this past April.
Founded in 2011 in the wake of a
devastating earthquake in Haiti by
Ken DeYoung (Iowa farmer and
pilot) and Terry Baxter (Iowa pastor
and missionary), Global Compassion
Network is a faith-based nonprofit
headquartered in Eagle Grove that
is most known for the Sukup Safe
T Home®, small, highly modified
grain bins which serve as homes for
displaced families rebuilding their
lives after disaster.
The units have been employed
extensively in Haiti in the last
few years following on the great
earthquake, which hit the island
nation. A double roof system is used
to deflect what you might otherwise
suspect would be a great deal of heat
buildup. The homes are structurally
impervious to most problems that
otherwise afflict temporary quick
to construct emergency housing.
A four-man team easily assembles
them in as little as ten hours.
Their size and ground plan are
also subject to easy modification.
Ten of the units can be shipped
in a sing-shipping container and the
house comes with a rain collection
system for domestic use.
Global Compassion Network has
built three villages, a school, medical
and dental clinic, three orphanages,
a widows & infants village, and two
churches in Haiti, Hidden Creeks
Bible Camp and Agricultural Center
in Peru, housing for missionaries
in Kenya, supports orphanages and
pastors in India, and also responds to
domestic disaster relief in the U.S.
More than 400 Ambassadors have
traveled on a mission trip through
Global Compassion Network. Learn

meet the four candidates who are
interviewing next week for the
position of Provost of Ellsworth
Community College.
All open
forums will be held from 3:15 to
4 pm in the Gentle Student Center
formal dining room at ECC.
On Monday, July 13 – Dr. Barb Klein,
Iowa Falls. Dr. Klein, currently
Dean of Enrollment Services &
Registrar for Ellsworth Community
College, has been in her current
position since 2011; she has been
at ECC since 1992. Dr. Klein holds
a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership
& Policy Studies from Iowa State
University, a Master of Education
degree in Higher Education from
ISU, a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Business Management from Buena
Vista University, and an Associate
the Bank, and the General Store.
He has also compiled and
annotated a timeline of early Grinnell

the context of statewide and national
events. Hundreds of pages long, the
timeline includes Grinnell as a stop
in the Iowa Underground Railroad.
He also began researching Iowa

Sherman’s March to the Sea.
Connon also regularly gives
another presentation, called “Iowans
Who Fought Against the Union.”
The public is invited to the
Steamboat Rock Underground
Railroad presentation, which comes
thanks to funding from Humanities
Iowa, a private non-profit affiliate
of the National Endowment for the
Humanities.
Connon, who is also a substitute
teacher, moved to Poweshiek
County in 2000. Knowing of

Starting at the upper left: Michaela Friest, Miss Hubbard; Rachel Miller, Miss New Providence; Rev. Justin Weber followed by Robert Prosser, neither of whom was in the running for things royal; Emily Mitchell and little Sofia Burk, Miss

The 4-H Conference
Judging on Tuesday went
especially well for 4-H’er
Elizabeth
Vogel
(right

three purple ribbons and
three blue ribbons for her
photography, and has one
photo being considered
for state. Elizabeth will be
a freshman at Iowa FallsAlden this fall, and has
been in 4-H for the last five
years.
Elizabeth is shown above
(middle) with judges Laurie
Olk (left) and Carol Rash

in a large 4-H Conference
Judging
event,
which
brings together exhibits in
just about all of the nonlivestock categories, such
as: photography, visual
arts,
cooking,
fashion
design and more. All the
ribbon-winners will have
their art displayed at a
gallery during the Hardin
County fair. Full fair
coverage in the July 17
paper.
All year round we invite you to join us
in celebrating God’s love.
Our doors are always open to those
whose hearts are open to His word.
May you and yours enjoy a truly
blessed week.
We hope to see you soon in church!

South Hardin softball
beaten by 8-run fifth

HAMPTON-A never-ending fifth
frame made it a one-and-down postseason showing for the South Hardin
softball team here Wednesday.
Hampton-Dumont exploded for
eight runs in the fifth and captured a
12-6 Class 3A regional quarterfinal
victory over the Tigers.
The host Bulldogs sent 13 batters
to the box and turned a three-run
deficit into a commanding five-run
cushion. H-D combined six singles
with two walks and a pair of errors
for the scoring spree.
H-D’s Shelby Tidman in the number nine hole, started the at bat with
a bunt single and after a sac-bunt the
next nine Bulldogs all reached base.
Pinch-hitting Autumn Harlan delivered a two-run single with RBI base
hits for Madie Mason and Callie
Grover.
“We knew going in that they
would put the ball in play,” stated
South Hardin coach Dave Donahue.
“We came out well, but then we
got stagnant and didn’t keep the
pressure on. We got down on ourselves and they jumped on us,” he
added.
South Hardin started with a quick
one-two-three punch in the visitor’s
half of the first inning. H-D struck
right back with a three-spot in the
bottom of the first to pull event. After a scoreless second, the Tigers tallied another there in the third.
South Hardin’s first featured a
one-out infield single by Jenny Allen, who circled the bases when
Hannah Tripp reached base on an
error and the softball rolled into the
dugout. Rachel Mildenhall also was
safe on a throwing error, and both
Tripp and Mildenhall scored on
Shannon Teske’s two-out single.
The Tigers regained the advantage
in the third at 6-3. Tripped doubled
off the leftfield fence, Mildenhall
singled, Cora Spainhower singled
to score Tripp, Teske fly-ball was
misplayed, plating Mildenhall and

Teske hustled home on Briana Kendall’s sac-fly.
H-D hurler Hansen then found a
groove and retired 12 of 15 Tigers
faced in the final four innings. She
struck out two and walked three.
Spainhower had SH’s only base hit
after third with a two-out single in
the seventh.
The Bulldogs answered South
Hardin’s first three with back-toback two-out walks followed by a
Macy Scheiderman RBI single and
two-run base knock by Mallory
Wohlford.
After the Wohlford single, Tiger
pitcher Miquela Teske set down
10 of the next 11 entering the fifth.
Teske struck out one and had four
base-on-balls in the loss.
The loss ended the summer campaign at 6-20 for the Tigers, while
the Bulldogs improve to 10-11.
Hampton-Dumont now travels to
Van Horne to play highly-ranked

ELDORA- A three-run eighth
inning ended an offensive-minded
marathon matinee here Wednesday.
The South Hardin and BCLUW
baseball teams combined for 31 base
hits and 27 runs in a North Iowa Cedar League West Conference contest
that started a 3 p.m. and ended near
six-bells.
The visiting Comets plated the
three runs in the extra inning for
a 15-12 win and home-and-away
sweep of the Tigers.
No lead was safe in regulation
as BCLUW owned a 6-2 advantage through four frames, later an
8-6 cushion and were up 12-9 after
a four-run visitor’s seventh. South
Hardin’s one lead was 9-8 after a
three-run bottom of the sixth.
“We were sloppy. We were coasting along and defensively we broke
down and let South Hardin back in
it,” said BCLUW coach Matt Zoske.
“On a positive note the kids kept
fighting. Up and down the lineup the
guys were hitting well and putting
the ball in play,” he added.
Offensive leaders for the Comets
were Troy Dolphin, Mitch Miller and
Clay Silver. Dolphin banged out five
singles, Miller had two base hits and
scored four runs, and Silver hit home
plate five times with a single. Josh
Sharp and Austin Willett added two
singles, Ian Showers a double for the
winner’s lone extra base knock, and
with one single were Brad Barkema,
Ty Runge and Ethan Hoveland.
Hoveland reached base on an error to open the eighth. Pinch-running
Caleb Engle took second on a sacbunt, third on Silver’s single and
scored on Miller’s safety. Silver and
Barkema, who reached on a fielder’s
choice, added insurance runs on
Dolphin and Sharp singles.
“It was so frustrating,” commented South Hardin coach Dick Shindelar. “We had our opportunities to
take control of the game and didn’t.
We were not sharp at all.”
David Shindelar’s three singles
paced the Tigers’ attack with a double and single each for Sam Shindelar, Cade Spieker, Dane Butler and
Zac Farrell; two singles for Alex
Gustafson and one safety for Hunter
Edgerton and Zach Shore.
South Hardin forced the eighth on
Spieker’s two-out two-run double
to left-centerfield. Farrell opened
the seventh with a two-bagger to
rightfield, Ty Cook walked, S. Shindelar’s fielder’s choice scored Farrell and Spieker’s laser two-bagger
plated Cook and S. Shindelar.
The Tigers went from down 8-6
to up one in the sixth as D. Shindelar singled, S. Shindelar doubled to
score his twin brother. Spieker singled and on a double steal S. Shindelar motored home. Spieker then
scored on Gustafson’s safety.
S. Shindelar in relief of Cook was
tagged with the pitching loss, while
the win went to Sharp in relief of
Miller. Cook and Shindelar struck
out three and issued nine free passes, while the Miller-Sharp tandem
fanned three and walked four.
BCLUW won the two team’s first
meeting 3-0 in less than two-hours
behind Miller’s three-hit shutout.
The loss was a fifth straight for the
Tigers and eighth in nine games to
stand 5-11 overall. The Comets after
an 0-5 start to the season climbed to
9-11.
