Kellokukka Shawl Materials and needles: Drops Alpaca (50g/180m ~200 yds/1,75 oz), 125 grams (~4,5 oz). 4mm (US #6) circular needles. After blocking measurements: Length at center back: 70 cm (~28 inches) Width: 150 cm (~60 inches) The shawl is knit top-down, i.e. the edges of the shawl will become the top line of the shawl. I used 2,5 balls of Drops Alpaca for the sample shawl. The stitch count increases on every row, so make sure you have enough yarn for finishing. The shawl can be knit with various types of yarn, such as Drops Alpaca or Kitten Mohair (by Sandnes Garn) or even tightly spun woolen yarns such as Ohut Pirkkalanka (by Pirkanmaan kotityö) or Silvia (by Wetterhoff). The thicker the yarn, the bigger the flower motifs will be. Knit 8 rows in garter stitch, pick up 3 sts along the edge and 3 more sts along the cast-on line. Turn, and purl the next row. Continue knitting according to chart (first Chart 1 and then Chart 2). Finishing: When you have finished 7,5 pattern repeats, knit 4 rows in garter stitch and bind off loosely. Block your finished shawl by soaking well and laying flat to dry. Blocking will bring out the motifs in the shawl, and the shawl becomes drapey. Pin the neckline edge leaving small gaps between needles, and use the picots of the floral pattern for blocking in the bind-off edge (see image on the last page for clarification). . The cast on point of the shawl is shown at the bottom middle of the picture. Chart 1 The chart begins on row 2 (this is the first row after you have completed the cast on directions) and only RS rows are charted. The beginning of a new floral pattern is marked in red in the chart. On these rows, you will increase more stitches than on the other rows. After Chart 1, knit Chart 2. row 38 36 34 32 30 28 26 24 22 20 18 16 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K Left edge of the shawl K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K K X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X O W O O \ O \ O Middle stitch \ O \ O \ O \ O \ O \ O O O O O O O O O W O O O O O O O O O O / \ O / O \ O / O / \ O / O M \ O / O / O \ \ O / O / O O \ O / O / O / O / \ O O / O / O / O / \ O / O / O / O O O O O O O O O M M M W O \ O \ O \ O O O O O O O O O O \ O \ O \ O \ / O \ O \ O \ O \ / O \ O \ O O / O \ O \ O / / O \ O M / O \ O \ / O \ O / O \ / O Beginning of the lace pattern on row 2 (repeat this for the other side of shawl) The red arrow indicates the fabric between the 3 edge sts and the middle st, ie. where the pattern repeats are knit Kellokukka Shawl http://www.mielitty.com Pattern & Images Copyright ©2006 Elina Urmas Translated with designer's permission by Tuulia Salmela and Sanna Syrjänen 2008.
