As a leader of the profession, Mr. Guerard helped guide actuaries and actuarial organizations across the globe through some of the most turbulent economic times of the modern era. His steady hand, keen insight, vast knowledge, foresight and positive nature enabled the profession to work together—across borders as well as across actuarial disciplines—to fulfill our universal commitment in serving the public interest. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Mr. Guerard built a truly international portfolio from his base in his native Canada. With his work and experience in countries far and wide—Australia, Bolivia, Cook Islands, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Indonesia Kenya, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Vietnam and more—Mr. Guerard distinguished himself as one of the foremost international ambassadors for and on behalf of the actuarial profession. Through his work as Secretary-General of the International Actuarial Association and his support of and involvement with numerous other actuarial organizations and associations, Mr. Guerard has helped the actuarial profession develop its potential in many ways in many countries. Through his work in promoting application of actuarial principles to private and public financial issues, Mr. Guerard has worked tirelessly to ensure that actuarial science plays a positive, constructive role in the development of modern economies throughout the developing world. Through his expertise on a wide range of actuarial issues, Mr. Guerard has set a standard of professional competence, public service, and depth and breadth of knowledge and experience to which actuaries everywhere can aspire. Mr. Guerard’s distinguished career brought him numerous awards of the highest honor and professional recognition. The American Academy of Actuaries joins our colleagues throughout the profession and throughout the world in applauding an actuarial career of accomplishment, integrity, and public service, and we wish Mr. Guerard years of good health and personal success in his well-earned retirement.
