By the time you read this, “Christmas in August” will be upon us. I urge our members to get involved and light up your property. Following that weekend, the next BIG EVENT is OUR ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING and VOTING DAY. If you will not be in the park on AUG. 15, PLEASE get your absentee ballot now. If you will be in the park on that day PLAN NOW to attend our annual meeting AND TAKE TIME TO VOTE. Choose your three candidates from among the seven candidates, and the board urges a ”YES“ vote on the golf proposal. We believe you will see it as an investment to protect your MEMBERSHIP INVESTMENT. Now let me speak to some other park concerns. Speed of golf carts is an URGENT concern. Youth learn from adults, and adults are just as guilty of violating the ten mile per hour speed limits. Your rebuttal is “I don’t have a speedometer” as if that gives you a free pass. I think we all know if we are speeding. I was driving my old Honda golf cart, considered by my grandchildren to be the slowest golf cart in the park. Even in that old cart I could have, and wanted, to push the pedal to the metal. Have you ever had that experience? We each need to take responsibility and cut back on speed voluntarily. Parents need to have conversations with your teen drivers. I think we all know. Some other alternatives that you may not like would be a massive ticketing campaign unannounced or requiring some kind of governor device or requiring a speedometer on each cart. Other concerns are music on golf carts loud enough to be an annoyance to those near and far both because of volume and lyrics or both. It’s for your personal enjoyment not for other’s annoyance. Remember, your cart is open air. Please be sensitive to others and turn down the volume. Walkers, for safety reasons, please walk facing traffic, no more than two side by side and move to the edge of the road for golf cart and automotive traffic. Bicycle riders, are you aware that park rules require you to stop at all stop signs? Irresponsible disposing of trash at roadways, beaches, playgrounds and dumpsters has become a huge concern. It has been noted by maintenance and others that litter See CHAIRMAN on page 4... Letter from the President by Gene Van Koevering It seems the summer is going fast. August is the month that many of our Members take extended family vacations, so we want you to know that there will be many events and things to do for the whole family and as a Staff, we will do all we can to make sure your time here is a great experience. One of the most important things to take place in August, are the elections. Many of you have attended Face to Phase meetings and forums to learn more about the golf and bylaw ballots, as well as learning about the Candidates who are running for the Board. Thanks to the Golf Committee, Board Members and Board Candidates that have attended the Face to Phase meetings and forums. In planning ahead regarding the posting of election results, I have been assured that we will be able to email the results to the Sandy Pines Media Manager after the votes are counted, and they will post the election results on channel 9.1 the evening of August 15. Other locations where the results will be posted will be on the Admin. doors, at the Ranger Station and on the CC bulletin boards. Some of the notice locations may not have the results until Monday, but it’s our intent that the Admin. doors, Ranger Station and channel 9.1 will have them by early evening of the 15th. If you have not seen the Lake and Fishery Report prepared by Earth Sciences this year, you may find a link to it on our Website. PRESIDENT continued... and irresponsible behavior with regard to this issue is at an all time high in the park. Please monitor yourself and your children and dispose of your trash in the proper receptacles. Be proactive and pick up trash when you see it. Committee to develop a 10 year management plan that will assure the continued health of these great resources. Dog owners need to be reminded that their pets are not allowed everywhere humans are and must be on a leash. Just like children, you must clean up after them. Please observe all posted signs. In an effort to protect the future of Sandy Pines amenities financially, we are working with Long Range Planning, Finance and Board of Directors, to approve the development of a Capital Reserve Fund, which is something Sandy Pines does not currently have. What is a Capital Reserve Fund? It includes such items as repairing or replacing our buildings, pools, tennis courts, etc. Basically, all physical assets above or below ground level. As you may realize, many of our capital assets are 20,30,40 years old and just as you experience in your own home, things wear out and need replacing or repair. The plan One more concern that I must mention. Park rules state that alcoholic beverages must be consumed on your site. No open cans or bottles are permitted anywhere in the park. Golf Course has its’ own rules. I like to be positive. Let’s all take a positive attitude to these concerns and turn each of these concerns Into positive behavior. THANK YOU!!!! Subsequent to the review of this plan by all of the above, I will be seeking a recommendation for approval from the Board to bring this to the membership in the 2016 election. If the recommendation of the plan is given by the Board, our Team will begin planning for a number of informational events in 2016, with the focus of providing all the details, data and reasoning for the membership to approve it at the ballot box in August 2016. A summary of a number of other news worthy items are: (1) The potential for grants. FEMA is accepting applications for new construction projects, if the project meets the requirements of their P-320/P-361 Storm Shelter armoring criteria. These grants are extremely competitive in nature, however if approved, Sandy Pines would receive a 75% grant. Given that we will be replacing CC 5 & 6 very soon, as well as the Indoor pool building within five (5) years (if approved), our park will have all of these projects applied for, as we are able. (2) Cell tower status: I have met with the Cell tower Developer and was pleased to hear that he has received a commitment from Verizon to be the Anchor Tenant on a new tower to be constructed here at Sandy Pines. He was quick to say that there remain a number of criteria to be met before the tower is approved, including an environmental study, research study on the potential existence of Native American Burial grounds or artifacts, the existence of any endangered plants or animals in the area, etc. The proposed tower would be 180-190 feet tall and would allow for up to four Wireless Carriers, County 911 equipment, and possibly other emergency related communication equipment. Thus, the tower would be good for Sandy Pines, but also good for the local area and the county upon completion. At this point the proposed location is on the northeast corner of the lot that was purchased in 2013. The approximate space that is needed will be 60 feet deep and 80-90 feet long. This would provide space for the tower and up to four Pods for the Wireless Provider equipment. If all goes well, construction would likely be in late 2016. I hope you agree with me that a number of options are presenting Sandy Pines with opportunities never before offered, and these are exciting times to be a part of this great Park. About half had children under 20. Our Sandy Pines License Plates are immediately available at the office or at the flea markets for $20 each. Sign design collage of license plate size decals are available for $10. We have just placed 61 orders for signs. Place your order now! In bulk order of 10 signs cost will be $45. If you want to wait until we get a bulk order of 50 signs cost will be $40. Here are some new ideas that our committee is trying to initiate. Design a unique Welcome to Sandy Pines Card that the Outreach Committee could send out within a week of your closing. If you have the gift of design, please submit it to me at kkron6759@att.net. Offer new members a guided tour to learn all the ins and outs of the park. The committee is seeking volunteer tour guides. SANDY PINES FOOTPRINTS | AUGUST 2015 RECREATION DEPARTMENT NEWS by Mary Applehof Thank you to everyone who participated in our Second Annual Rainbow of Color run! We raised enough money to buy the two new AED’s and Cases for our Park! We had a great turn out and we are very fortunate to have had 18 sponsors for our race. I would like to thank Robyn, from Advertising Solutions, for making all of the shirts, donating all the water bottles and helping find all of our sponsors! Speaking of participating, we are so thankful for all of our volunteers, and we are looking for more of you to sign up for our volunteer program. I can’t stress enough how much we appreciate everyone who volunteers for our activities. All of the events that we do, cannot happen without each and every one of you. So thank you from the bottom of my heart. The new sign up genius program has made it very easy to sign up for the events that you are interested in helping with. Please call me if you need any assistance in signing up. We have had great volunteers help out at the Family Fun Day and Kiddie Carnival, Trunk or Treat, and the Adults 3 Disciplines Triathlon. If you volunteered and need a service hour’s certificate, please come to the Recreation office and we will be sure to get that for you. Some dates to put on your calendar yet for August are: Saturday the 8th is a very busy fun filled day: We are Celebrating Christmas in August. We hope that many of you will take the time to decorate your sites and make it a really fun time enjoying the Christmas Spirit around Sandy Pines. Thank you to the Chapel for Sponsoring the Live Nativity that will be held in the core area. Also on this day, we have the Pickle ball tournament, Soccer tournament, Golf Cart Rodeo, Tractor Ride with a character, along with a BBQ Cook-off at the Flea Market t-pee area. The Golf Cart Rodeo will be happening in the parking lot of the indoor pool. This is where the driver of the golf cart is blindfolded, and then someone else tells them where to go on the driving course! This is going to be great for all of you backseat drivers. Saturday, the 15th is the Adult/Child tennis tournament, starting at 9 am, at the Water Park courts, along with the last drive in movie for the summer! We are planning to do our first ever Disc Golf Tournament at the new Course in Phase 3. We are very fortunate to have West Michigan Builders sponsor this new and exciting event. We will be selling the Sandy Pines Golf Disc’s too! With all of our activities coming to a close for the season, please take time to thank the Recreation Staff who kept your kids safe and entertained this hot summer! The Tennis, Golf and Swim lessons are running smoothly. The Kid’s club, Pre-teen club and Teen clubs have had record numbers attending, and are having a great time too. We will be having our end of season “Recreation Party” for all kids who have attended any Recreation activity this summer. It will be held on Friday, August 14, at the Phase 1 beach. Our fish are healthy and have plentiful food supply. Sailboat Cove does have leaf sediment, approximately one foot around the edge. We also talked about dredging and where we can put the sediment and sand we take out. We are planning to put together an 8-10 Year Plan to keep our lake in good shape. A full report has been put on our website, or you can stop and see a copy at the Administration Office. We appreciate everyone helping to keep the dog park clean. You are doing a great job! by Mike Young The Blue Dump Wagons were also discussed and the committee felt that they should pass an inspection and be stickered each year. We did have an accident earlier this summer that had to be cleaned up. Aquatics News by Kim Day Our pools have been very busy. Please remember to shower before going in them. Showering before entering really helps keep our pools healthier. Please remember that at the water park there is ONLY BOTTLE WATER allowed. We are finding a lot of people are bringing in their coolers and eating in the water park. This is not allowed. We need to keep our water park clean and free from ants. We are still in need of swimsuits, if you have any that you can donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Just drop them off at the recreation office any time we are open. Our annual end-of-the-year party will be held on August 14th. The party will be at Phase 1 Beach, beginning at 10 am until noon. The Dog Park is located in Phase 6, behind the bathroom. It is a fenced in area where your pet can run and enjoy themselves, in a shady area. There is water for them to get a drink, with a bench and table in the shade for you to sit, while they play. There are baggies for you to pick up after your pet, and a pail to dispose of it. Stop by the Park and Garden and check out our supply of Christmas Lights. Let’s light up Sandy Pines this year! If you have always wondered about the water softener program and wanted to try it, now is the time. We have a few softener tanks available for the last couple of months of this season. The cost is $100, and if you want us to install and pick up the tank at the end of the season, add an additional $45. We have a limited number available, so this offer is only available until we run out of our supply. We have had a lot of problems with the white hoses and the plastic couplers at the risers. If you are tired of the hose splitting or the coupler cracking, stop by the store and see our new gray hose with crimped-on couplers for the risers. Yes, you will have to buy these, but it should end your problem. As we approach Labor Day many of you will be closing up for the season. If you have a softener through the Maynard program, please contact us when you would like the tank returned. If you want the program again next season, be sure to contact the Park and Garden before you leave for the season, for a discount on next year’s tank. Oh by the way, the Golf Cart Rental, Kayak rental and Paddleboard rental have been very busy this year. It is getting important for you to call ahead and reserve your item, as we have been running out of rental times weeks before each holiday. Get your cart for Labor Day soon! LMGC Update by Gary Peters Reduced Food Prices: Now that we’ve got Memorial and Independence Days under our belt, the staff and I have closely reviewed all the food prices at the course and have lowered the price on most hot food items. For example, the all-beef hog dog is now $2.25, brats and polish dogs are $3, hamburgers are $4, and all new chicken breast sandwich is only $4.50. For $1.25 more you get bag of chips and a pop. Policy Reminder: I would like to thank most golfers for their pace of play. We still have a few that want to play five somes and six somes. There is a note on both doors as you come into the Pro Shop that states if you do play as a five some or six some, you will be asked to leave the course and lose two weeks of use of the course. Additionally, all players must have their own set of clubs to use on the course. Sets of clubs are available for purchase in the Pro Shop. Some things that are new at the course…the flag sticks have been refinished and we have put on prim tape, which will reflect to laser range finders to giving you a distance to pin. This was in response to many golfer requests. Foot Golf on its first Sunday had well over 25 kids show up to play, which is great. We will continue this program on Sunday for the rest of the year, and may start a midday during the week if we see the need. New Sandy Pines Member Benefit: Effective immediately we are offering the membership a special…if you bring three guests to make a foursome, we will make a price break of only $18 per guest, which includes one cart rental. I hope everyone is having a great time as our season is more than half over! As I write this letter, we are working at getting all of the lots and trailers cleaned up that were not done by the June 1st deadline. Please keep in mind this is not a cleanup that needs to be done only for the June 1st deadline, but all season long. Lawns must not be more than 6” long at any time. Trailers, porches, garages and sheds must be kept clean and free from mold and mildew, or I will be forced to have it done for you, and charge your account for all fees. You will also be assessed a $100 automatic fine. The last thing I want to talk about is boat stakes. I have been in the process of remarking boat stakes to make sure that everyone has their boat in the proper location, and trying to find a way to make room for more boat spots. I started in Phase 2, behind the tennis courts, spending several hours remarking the area. I was very disappointed to discover that someone went down in the area a couple of weeks later, and removed all the stakes that were put in the ground. This area will now need to be completely re-done. Please…if you see blue or yellow flags on the water’s edge, leave them alone! Thank you! We know a lot about improving your lot. The Maintenance Department will be working on additional parking by the Adult Pool for golf carts. We will also be rebuilding some of the larger signs in the Park. I would like to take a moment of your time to give breath to some of the goals and directions. Sandy Pines / Charter Internet – Those that have subscribed to the Sandy Pines / Charter Internet modem offering have been enjoying 60MB service. I, for one, have enjoyed the blazing fast reliable internet connection at my site. Cellular voice – Our current filing with the FCC has piqued the interest of a couple of the carriers. Nothing has been formalized yet, but the silver is starting to show in the clouds. As Sandy Pines grows from the campground into the resort campground, we are working on making sure the amenities and facilities of the park are technologically able to grow with it. We are currently deploying a backhaul system that will allow all the park facilities to communicate with one another. This will give the ability to control environmental, security, features and amenities at each of the facility. I would like to share the Sandy Pines Technology Committee Mission Statement: The SPTC will provide leadership for effective strategic and tactical planning in the use of technology. The SPTC will promote new uses of information technology within the park through the support for exploratory and innovative applications. In the event that a person is found operating a rental golf cart within the park that is under the age of 18 years, the Ranger Staff will stop the golf cart, take the rental golf keys, issue a violation and inform the rental agency. This may result in the loss of use of the rental golf cart and any rental fees. Mopeds and Scooters: Two wheeled scooters with a seat and a motor are permitted within the park. Motorized scooters without a seat are not permitted. Youth must be 15 years or older, and must have a state issued vehicle license or Moped license, to operate a Moped or park approved motorized scooter in the park. Mopeds must have a moped registration sticker and the membership site numbers on the front and rear of the moped, at least two inches in height. All mopeds/scooters operated within the Park must have $300,000 liability insurance coverage. Watercraft: All watercraft within the park must display a Sandy Pines watercraft registration sticker. This watercraft sticker must be displayed on the right rear end of the watercraft above the water line. Please observe “No Wake” zones in the lake. Please be sure you provide personal flotation devices that are in appropriate condition and fitting for all persons on the watercraft. I continue to play piano at the chapel whenever needed. I have also offered volunteer time in developing and implementing a new Performance Evaluation program with our park President, Gene VanKoevering. I retired from AAA Michigan in 2013, as the Vice President of Michigan Branch Operations. My 40 year career there will allow me to share my experience with organization, financials, sales, communication skills, strategic planning, facilities and impacting best-in-class customer service. My core values include integrity, honesty, interpersonal skills and work ethic. My husband, Scott and I reside at Sandy Pines full time during the summer. We enjoy traveling, bicycling, playing volleyball, reading, our love for the Lord, our family members and friends. I believe I have a lot to offer our park. I love Sandy Pines and would be honored to serve on your Board of Directors. Roger Grinwis, Site N-22 My name is Rog Grinwis, and my wife, Karen and I, have been members since August, 1992. We live at Lot N-22. for two years. I am running for a position on the Board of Directors. I have previously served on the Board for seven years in the early 2000’s. I have also served on the Long Range Planning Committee, and served as Chairman I have been active on the Special Events Committee, the bus trips, Tiger ball games, morning coffees and potlucks. The Veteran’s Memorial program has also been part of my service here in the park, for many years. My wife, Annette, and I will be enjoying our 3rd summer at Sandy pines this year. We love our place and spend the summers here with our 2 kids, Jason age 14, and Heidi age 12. I grew up in the Jenison, MI area and had heard that Sandy Pines was an amazing place and now we get to experience it for ourselves. We have not been let down. We really look forward to building memories with our children and hope to enjoy our grand children here as well in the future. My daughter loves the swimming program, riding her scooter, and meeting all the kids her age. My son enjoys tennis, remote control cars and being able to drive a golf car independently. I joined the Marketing Committee last year and have a passion to see Sandy Pines continue to grow and flourish. I believe there are a lot of challenges, and a lot of opportunities in the years ahead. I am a business owner with 4 BIGGBY Coffee shops and a 5th on the way. I have been involved in the BIGGBY world for over 8 years. As well as managing my stores, I have also been the President of our Advertising Coop representing 50 stores, and President of our Franchise Association. I enjoy people, marketing, and helping to make a difference. I have also served as President of our South Kent Rotary Club. If elected to serve on the Sandy Pines board I want to bring my business experience and help Sandy Pines be a great place for many generations to come. Robert Klein, Site 880 I have been married to Dawn for 27 years and have two sons Greg and Mitch. We became members of Sandy Pines in 2003 and have spent the summers enjoying the park. My current job requires me to travel and when I am not traveling my position provides me the luxury of working from home. My wife Dawn being a special education teacher and having the summers off makes for quality family time at Sandy Pines. I love the outdoors which came from my childhood where my father got me involved in Scouting at an early age with Cub Scouts. I loved my Scouting experience and achieved the rank of Eagle at the age of 14. I have been active with Scouting most of my life, and it has provided me with great core values with it’s foundation in service to others. I attended college at the University of Michigan for my ungraduate in finance and now I am completing post graduate studies in Law at Wayne State University. I am currently employed with AT&T where I lead the Midwest Healthcare segment. I have 25 plus years experience in Management, Information Technology, Communications and Contract Compliance. I have also served on several boards both profit and non-profit, and have chaired committees while serving these boards. I served as a member of the board of lay ministries for my church, where our focus was on outreach to our members and the local community. In the past 12 years I have seen Sandy Pines grow and change with its continued focused of providing a great value to its members. My family and I have been on the receiving end of the value proposition and now I believe it is my turn to step up and give back to the Sandy Pines membership. I am happily married to Ellen for the last 50 years, have three adult married children who have blessed us with 10 wonderful, enjoyable grandchildren. Our children all have 11 years of childhood memories of Sandy Pines fun as we spent at least two weeks each summer in my parents place in Phase2 on Fireside trail. Our grandchildren, with the exception of the youngest three are experiencing their ninth season of summer fun since we became members in January, 2007. I was born in Jamestown, MI in May of 1941 as the second child and eldest son of Melvin and Margaret who became members in 1973. I graduated from Grandville High School, Hope College, and Western Theological Seminary. I pastored churches in Clymer, NY, Westland, MI and Orlando, FL. My other employment as an adult has been school bus & motor coach driver, a family service counselor with a group of funeral homes and cemeteries. Currently my wife and I clean CC#2 (4th season) during the season and I work during the winter months as an usher for a company who has the contract for all the city of Orlando Venues which include the Amway Center, The Citrus Bowl, The new soccer arena, The Bob Carr performing arts center which means I work all Orlando Magic & most Orlando Solar Bears Hockey games, some Orlando City Soccer& some Orlando Predator Arena Football games, all Citrus Bowl football games and many celebrity concerts and shows. You may have guessed. We have a winter home in Orlando, FL. I also volunteer my time as an assistant pastor at our home church. While here at Sandy Pines I volunteer each Thur. morning and work with our Men’s Volunteer Group serving the maintenance department with many assigned projects. Sandy Pines ownership has privileges! My wife has previously served on the Sandy Pines Board in 2000’s and I served on the Rules Committee. Presently I am serving on the Finance Committee of Sandy Pines. Three generations of our Ritsema family have enjoyed Sandy Pines with one daughter and family becoming owners of their own lot recently and the other two families as Associate Members. Sandy Pines is our “home” with wonderful memories. VISION FOR SANDY PINES - Sandy Pines is at a crossroad right now and many critical decisions need to be made that will impact every present and future owner. After 40+ years the Sandy Pines infrastructure needs attention, new legislation may require increased capital outlay for upgrading several operating systems in the park, requested improvements by our members need proper consideration, and administrative, operational efficiency is essential. This will require progressive wisdom and financial accountability to all of our members. Some just want a place to camp, while others may want a country club atmosphere with all the amenities. Wisdom and fairness must balance the financial contribution of each accordingly. EXPERIENCE - I have served for over 40 years on church boards as President/Pastor, on two other non-profit organizations. For seven years I was Director and Chaplain of Anchor House, a hospitality center for seafarers out of Port Manatee, Florida in charge of all administrative and financial responsibilities. I just recently gave up my license as a Michigan Residential Builder and I built many a deck and three season porch floor system throughout Sandy Pines in the past. I still retain my Michigan Real Estate License for the near future and am familiar with current marketing values. I served on the formation committee and initial Home Owners’ Association Board as Treasurer in Parrish, Florida and currently I am President of the Central Village Condominiums Association in Holland, MI. In my retirement I hope to dedicate all my experience and energy to promote, preserve and protect every individual Sandy Pines Owner’s interest and total enjoyment of Sandy Pines today and into the future.
