The web of racketeering is well organised, including insiders in transport companies, truck drivers, garage managers, taxi associations and police and politicians who own taxis. “These guys know how to cover up their books and even private investigators are finding it difficult to pin down offenders. This is a big syndicate and we need the Hawks to investigate,” said a police source who revealed the syndicate’s modus operandi to The North Coast Courier. There is no fuel theft reported locally and no fuel tankers are being hijacked, however, transport companies picked up that they have been losing fuel. Sources within the petrol industry said some North Coast service stations have been losing up to R100 000 in fuel sales a month because customers have been filling up at illegal depots at R10 per litre - compared to the current diesel price of R11.37. The source explained that transport company insiders abuse a loophole in the system which allows for some fuel loss to spillage and evaporation, to overfill tankers at their depots. The driver then pulls over on a quiet piece of road along the delivery route, commonly on the N2 north of the Mandeni toll gate, and offloads the extra fuel to a syndicate buyer. They are able to bypass the tankers’ computers by means of gravity siphoning with custom manufactured pipes and fittings that siphon fuel unnoticed. Eric Sthole used his beadwork skills learned at school to set up his Willard Beach business. Beadworking with a sea view Sboniso Dlamini A photo snapped at the illegal Isithebe depot. The fuel being decanted into the smaller yellow containers has a ready market. Continued on Page 2 When Eric Sthole lost his job in a joinery making coffins and caskets to put bread on the table, he was faced with a choice: turn to a life of crime or think creatively. Born and raised in Kranskop, in the KwaMxhosa area outside Maphumulo, Eric’s people gave no thought to doing handicrafts and beadwork for a living. But Eric had been taught beadwork at school, so faced with a hungry family, he decided to apply those skills learned long ago. The Shaka’s Head resident set up a small stand next to the lifesaver’s cabin on Willard Beach where he has developed a fun and quirky approach to beadwork decoration. To make his work different to others, he collects bottles, washes them and decorates them with copper wire and beads, to make it usable again. He also buys tin mugs and covers them with beads. “What looks like rubbish to most people, to me is business and I use my skills to make you pay for what you have thrown away. You can also bring anything of your choice and I can 18 JULY 2016 FIND US ON FACEBOOK decorate it with wire and beads,” said Sthole. When The North Coast Courier visited him last Thursday, he was busy covering an electric lamp a customer had ordered. Sthole said when he started his business eight years ago, it was very difficult because he did not have a permit. So he chose a spot where he could hide his products when KwaDukuza traffic and crime prevention patrolled the area. He has a permit now. His latest project is to work out how he can grow his business to be able to employ other people in his township. 2 The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 NEWS Truck drivers sell fuel to organised syndicate The blazing fire caused by petrol thieves at the N2 Shell garage in March destroyed a petrol tanker and a van carrying siphoned fuel. Continued from Page 1 The stops are quick and when questioned by an employer about an unscheduled stop, picked up by the tanker’s GPS system, drivers usually just say they needed the toilet. Some service station managers are apparently willing to cover for taxi drivers and issue fake receipts to those caught with suspicious quantities of fuel on board. It is illegal to store more than 200 litres of fuel without appropriate licencing. This “get out of jail free” card issued by service stations makes it impossible to make charges stick, the source said. “All fuel looks the same. How do you prove which tanker or garage a batch of fuel comes from?” The source said that a number of police officers and councillors were suspected of being involved. On March 27, 42 000 litres of petrol and diesel went up in smoke and the N2 Umvoti Shell garage was partially burnt down when a generator, used to pump petrol and diesel into containers on the back of a small truck parked between two fuel tankers, sparked a raging fire. Two truck drivers who were arrested were later released on bail. It is understood that a recent court case involving transport company Unitrans losing fuel to the syn- dicate, has fallen through. Uncontrolled fuel run-off and fuel seeping into the soil also pose a health risk to the community. Bail opposed for alleged farm attackers Erica Abrahams The condition of 80-year-old farmer, Simon Shepherd, who was attacked at his home in Upper Tongaat last month, is deteriorating rapidly. Two intruders broke into his Misty Ridge home on June 19 and beat him up while his wife, Joy, hid in the wardrobe. The attack left Shepherd with five broken ribs, a gash to the head and multiple wounds. After weeks of being in ICU, Shepherds condition worsened when he contracted a lung infection. “My dad was recovering well, he was even moved out of ICU for a day. We were informed on Thursday night, July 7 that he had to be moved back to ICU because he was struggling to breathe. He is now in an induced coma and on a ventilator,” said his son, David. The two suspects were arrested on June 23 and June 25 and are still in custody. They were due to appear in court on Tuesday, July 12. The Umhlali detective handling the case, constable Sidusiso Nkwanyana said that in light of Shepherd’s current condition, he will oppose bail. “We asked the family to bring us Simons’s medical records. What they allegedly did to the man was horrible and the community needs to be kept safe from people like this. They will be appealing for bail in front of the magistrate and I will be opposing. Ultimately the decision lies with the magistrate Simon Shepherd suffered multiple injuries and remains in ICU. but I do have a strong case, especially with Simon’s recent set back.” David said that although his father’s condition did not look good, the family hoped that the fighter would pull through. “He has already overcome so much and we pray that we will get through this recent setback,” he said. The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 NEWS Isithebe, survival of the fittest A burnt out truck seen through a hole in another truck paints a stark picture of the economic slowdown in the aftermath of the week long Isithebe protests in March this year. Photo: Jacqueline Herbst Jacqueline Herbst Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection, applied as a metaphor for economic environments, is busy unfolding in Isithebe industrial park. The violent protests in March and the week long siege of the Sundumbili waterworks, rapidly changed the industrial park’s economic landscape, leaving those who were unable to adapt quickly with no choice but to close down. The 150 businesses in Isithebe lost three weeks of production due to protests caused by the ANC’s internal power struggle. A confirmed 2300 jobs were lost last week as three factories and a warehouse in Isithebe went belly up. Zikiza Joinery and Distinctive Choice closed down and it was announced that the Gomma Gomma warehouse, that burnt down in March, will not be reopened. The Okapi factory in Isithebe is also no longer operational since it has been relocated to Pinetown. Managing director, Kevin Chadwick denied that the relocation was related to the financial loss suffered as a result of the protests. The Distinctive Choice clothing factory in Yellow Street employed 1500 workers and has not been open since it was torched by protesters in March and Zikiza Joinery, described on their outdoor signage in Red Street as the fastest growing joinery manufacturer in South Africa, shut down four factories that employed 800 people. A notice taped to their Red Street premises’ gate said they had to stop production because the bank ceased financing. When The North Coast Courier visited Isithebe, Mthembu Zulu, a security guard who guarded the Distinctive Choice premises in Yellow Street was still unaware that the factory had been closed down and still believed that “the people” would come back to work. In the meantime, Ithala Business Development Corporation has backed off the eviction notices served two weeks ago to about 60 businesses in Isithebe. Following a successful meeting brokered by the Ilembe Chamber on Thursday, July 7, Ithala has agreed to negotiate with tenants on a one-on-one basis to come to an agreement on rental fees. A source in Isithebe revealed that rent in Isithebe was below market value because it was left unchanged for a long time, leaving landlords unable to maintain the buildings. Isithebe reportedly hopes to have lease and rental negotiations finalised by October. “The meeting has opened up official channels of communication between Ithala and its tenants, which was part of the problem up to now,” said a source in Isithebe. Seven arrested for burning councillor’s house The remains of Banda’s car. Sboniso Dlamini Shaka’s Head residents protested on Tuesday morning, blocking the N2, R102 and all the internal roads in the township after seven people were arrested on Monday night in connection with the burning of Shaka’s Head councillor, Jetro Banda’s house and car on February 22. KZN SAPS spokesperson, lieutenant colonel Thulani Zwane, said the perpetrators are between 23 and 45 years old. They appeared at the Umhlali Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday charged with public violence, arson and malicious damage to property. Ward youth committee member, Philile Siyaya, said an angry mob descended on her home on Tuesday morning, accusing her of helping police to identify the perpetrators. They broke her front door and fridge. “I was getting ready to go work, when I heard a noise. When I opened the door, I saw protesters coming to my house and I ran to my neighbour’s,” said Siyaya. She was escorted by the police out of the township with her oneyear-old daughter, Zekhethelo. In February, Shaka’s Head residents protested against the outcome of the ANC ward candidate nomination meeting that was held last October, where Banda reportedly won by 85 votes. They wanted Mlamuli Ndlela as their candidate and accused Banda of manipulating the process. They finally won that battle when Ndlela was announced as a candidate for ward four. Ndlela denies rumours that he took part in the burning of his rival’s house and car. He said that even the people who have been arrested are innocent. “They were not part of the crowd who burnt the house and car. This is just dirty political games,” said Ndlela. The arrested residents were released on R2000 bail each and they will appear in court again on Thursday. 3 4 The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 NEWS On the road to recovery Jacqueline Herbst A year ago when water and sanitation minister, Nomvula Mokonyane visited a 26 per cent full Hazelmere Dam, it seemed the dam was doomed to fail before the end of the year. Certain sections of the dam were dry enough to walk across on foot and resembled a parched desert landscape with cracked earth and dead trees. Exactly a year later, thanks to little bouts of rain when all seemed to be lost and water authorities’ drought mitigation efforts, the dam is at a much healthier 43.97 per cent and some sections that were bone dry in July last year, now have enough water for fishing. The emergency pipeline is still transferring about eight million litres per day across from the Tongaat River into the dam and water restrictions adhered to by consumers have contributed to the survival of the region’s only dam. Hazelmere Dam duty officer, Sarah Zuma said although the dam is now a little deeper, it is still too low to launch boats. A fisherman who tried to launch a boat on the weekend got stuck in the mud. “Only once the dam has reached 60 per cent will people be able to launch again,” said Zuma. She said people still came to fish from the banks, have picnics, camp or stay in the chalets. “Because of the drought we are charging only 50 per cent of the normal entrance fee,” said Zuma. When The North Coast Courier visited the dam on Friday, July 8 there were two guys fishing with kick boats (small inflatable one-man boats that can be launched without a trailer) and the grounds were well maintained. Although the dam level is about 20 per cent higher than it was 12 months ago, the drought is by no means over and water restrictions still apply at least until the dam reaches 60 per cent. Although still critically low, Hazelmere Dam is in a far better state than it was a year ago. Friendly 23-year-old petrol attendant, Thobelani Zondi is qualified in the field of marketing but, like many, has struggled to find employment while also having to support a brother who is addicted to drugs. “I had good results in school and after matric I was accepted at the Durban University of Technology to study marketing. I received my diploma after three years and set off to Pretoria to find a job,” said Zondi. After a year of fruitless job hunting he returned home to Etete. “I became the breadwinner and although I have my diploma in marketing, I am grateful to have a job. It is an honest living and I am not ashamed.” With Zondi’s outgoing nature and love for people, he is passionate about influencing others to lead an honest lifestyle. “I want people to know that even though it is difficult to find a job, crime should not be an escape. Too many teenagers from Etete leave school and turns to drugs. They steal, sometimes from their own houses, to feed their habit.” The problem hit close to home when Zondi’s 15-year-old brother left school and became addicted to drugs. “It hurts to see him the way he is. He is so young and he looks terrible. I am saving money to send him to rehab but I know that it will not be a quick fix and that the long-term solution will be to move him out of the township. “ Zondi spends time trying to encourage the youth to further their education and concentrate on school. He knows that his current position is just temporary and that one day, his hard work and dedication will pay off. Zondi works passionately while praying for better opportunities. Challenge accepted Jacqueline Herbst The province’s flagship entrepreneurship programme, the Ilembe Chamber Entrepreneurs competition, got underway on Saturday, July 9 at the Ilembe Chamber offices. The 25 participants, hand-picked from 150 entries, represent all corners of the Ilembe district in the sixth running of the competition. In order to deliver on sponsors’ expectations of viability beyond two years and job creation, mentors will dedicate the next eight Saturday mornings (with mentorship continuing throughout the week) to train and assist each small business represented in the competition. To keep it fresh, this year sees the introduction of specialists in different areas of business contributing their expertise to the weekly workshops. One of them is business consultant, Anton Ressel who took time out of his Durban vacation to mentor participants on growth in business. “The purpose of the programme is to see how the Chamber can support you from a non-financial point of view, to achieve the sponsors’ expectations,” Ilembe Chamber CEO, Cobus Oelofse told participants in his opening speech. A diverse range of small business enterprises are represented in this year’s competition, including farming, steel manufacturing, furniture manufacturing, health and baby care products, medical tourism, a photographer, a laundry service and a guesthouse. Erica Abrahams The Cornubia development, a joint venture of eThekwini municipality and Tongaat Hulett, recently welcomed a R1.5 billion investment for a shopping mall that will occupy 8.5 hectares. Just 15 kilometres from King Shaka International airport, the R25 billion development was approved in 2014 and is predicted to be a huge contributor to the livelihood and economy of the North Coast. Tongaat Hulett’s development executive, Karen Petersen, said the development of the shopping mall would benefit many people on the North Coast. “This alone will create 3 856 construction jobs yearly. Permanent and sustainable jobs will be 3 407 and employment over the entire six-year construction period would be 23 138,” she said. The Cornubia development, deemed as a national high priority, extends through Mt Edgecombe and Umhlanga as well as lower income areas like KwaMashu, Inanda, Ntuzuma, Phoenix and Ottawa. Cornubia is set to be a mixed income, fully integrated “human settlement” with a town centre, business hub, industrial estate and now a retail shopping centre. The land will provide 24 000 homes, 15 000 of which are proposed for subsided housing. The retail investment is the first transaction between Investec and Tongaat Hulett that developers hope will serve as a catalyst for the broader area and unlock further sales. “It will serve as a key landmark and asset as the development of Cornubia unfolds, WBHO, as the main contractors of the shopping centre is building at speed and the construction site shows huge progress. The development is scheduled to open in September 2017,” said Petersen. National retailers which include, Dis-chem, Pepkor Group, Woolworths, Edcon Group, Virgin Active, Pick n Pay, Clicks, Bakos Brothers, Outdoor Warehouse, Nu Metro, Checkers, Cotton On, Truworths, The Spur Group and Burger King booked space in the new mall. My car wasn’t blocking the traffic - cars could easily pass. I’ve been told before that our traffic cops are killing the goose that lays the golden eggs, but this is the first time I’ve experienced it first-hand. Given the fact that the retail festival takes up the whole Willard Beach parking area, where is one supposed to park? There are some spaces behind La Montagne and Balvista centre, a few more along Dolphin Crescent, a few nooks and crannies here and there - after that there’s only the pavements. How many tickets do you suppose the cops wrote over the two weeks? 500? 1 000? 5000? Your guess is as good as mine, because they’re not talking. But I am sure there’s a lot of unhappy people. Now let’s apply some logic to this. You want the people to come to Ballito, so help them! Create more parking for the event. Hire marshalls to direct cars to those places. That will give much-needed jobs. Car owners give tips to car guards. Car owners happy. Car guards happy. Everyone happy. Everyone comes back next year! France was one of the first countries - to my knowledge - to introduce special tourism police to the streets of Paris, and the practice has spread around the world. Where has it spread to? To Thailand, Mauritius, Malaysia and many more countries that have realised that tourism is big business. Why do tourists need special attention? Because, in their innocence, they often fall foul of local rules and regulations. With a few words, they can be helped to avoid misfortune and enjoy the best of the place they are visiting. If they were simply arrested or fined, the experience would leave a bad taste. They would tell their friends and the word would spread that country ‘A’ was to be avoided. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out fewer visitors would mean less income for the country. Domestic and foreign tourism was worth around R100 billion to South Africa, according to SA Tourism’s 2015 annual report. Of that, Ilembe earns about R1.6 billion a year, and I would hazard a guess that the bulk of that is earned by KwaDukuza, in particular the Ballito holiday hub. Why am I spelling this out like a “Tourism for Idiots” guide? I’ll come to that in a moment. No signs, no lines restricting parking. You can view the tourists/holidaymakers visiting Ballito as chickens ripe for the plucking, or as conPerhaps I’m being unfair, perhaps nobody has tributors to the region’s bank account. If the first, explained the importance of the Ballito Pro to the then it is unlikely that they will return for a second traffic department. But isn’t this what we choose plucking, wouldn’t you agree? More money in the councillors for? Please, before Ballito Pro 2017 or till, year after year, from satisfied customers means any other event that attracts visitors to these shores, less money out of residents’ pockets to pay for can the mayor and his council apply their minds to essential services. Right? how visitors can be helped to enjoy the experience? Let’s take it down to micro level. The Ballito Pro And while they’re at it, can they investigate why has been running for eight years. Sentence is an insult to women The sentence of six years imposed on Oscar Pistorius for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp is an insult to women all over the world. A person who willfully shoots someone through a closed door thinking there was an intruder, even though your partner is not lying next to you in bed, should be given at least the minimum sentence for murder which is 15 years. This judgment has now set a precedent and has given menthe authority to kill their partners and using the same Burning schools destroys our future excuse as Oscar. In order to fight for women’s rights the state must now take this matter to a higher prosecuting authority and have this judge recused from this case as she clearly is not meting out justice fairly. This mild sentence given to Oscar has shamed our nation and brought our justice system into disrepute. SELVAN NAIDOO KwaDukuza Letter of the Week Beware gate motor conman Please make readers of The Courier aware that we have a new conman in our midst. I like to support Ballito businesses when I can, so when my gate was needing repair I saw an advertisement for (name supplied) and telephoned him. He recommended a new motor, but as he was just starting out asked that I pay for the motor in advance and he would buy and collect and bring it to us for fitting by him. I paid R4100 into his account and since then cannot get any joy. At first it was excuses, now he just does not answer any phone calls or emails. I went to the police to lay a charge and was told they could not accept it as it was a civil matter - an agreement between him and me so unless I go to a lawyer, which will cost me more money, he is free to move on to his next sucker customer and con them. He can make a living out of this kind of con. He drives a dark blue Fiat or Golf. It has since come to my notice that he has also conned other people in our area. JOY VAN LEEUWEN Ballito Best service ever! We were referred to CMH Nissan in Ballito and put in the hands of Andre Joseph. He gave us his undivided attention and showed us everything available. Having decided in a new small vehicle, we signed the offer to purchase on Monday, paid on Tuesday and had the car of our choice delivered with everything we required fitted, on Wednesday morning. Every step of the way he kept us up to date with phone calls, emails and sms’s. We couldn’t have had better service and recommend Andre Joseph to anyone. J DEMIEL Ballito A line has been drawn in the kitty litter! Cat owners are easy to spot in the cat food aisle (dog owners just seem to grab and go!) by their hunched shoulders, furrowed brow, pursed lips and anxious eyes, scanning the shelves for THAT brand that may hopefully meet the approval of the precious, furry f(r)iend back home. What will it be, sighs the hapless human - pellets (or kibbles), tinned or sachets with gravy, jelly, sauce, minced, or chunks? Months of whisp(k)ered threats and PETulent meowing, disgusted glares at every meal offered, persistent hovering all deliberate attempts to weaken your resolve NOT to give in, sudden flash of fur as one is about to descend the stairs . . . anyone who has ever owned, no let me re-phrase, anyone who has ever BEEN owned by a feline knows how persistent and successful these furry critters are at getting what they deem to be their constitutional right! Recently the Harry Bodasingh Primary School acknowledged and thanked the youth of 1976 for their bravery in fighting the apartheid government 40 years ago. Today we commemorate the role they played in taking part in the Soweto protests of 1976, many of whom were shot by the apartheid police while protesting against the sub-standard of education in black schools in South Africa. Learners were enlightened on the true significance of June 16th. I showed them pictures of the protest and the famous picture of 13-year-old Hector Pieterson – the iconic image of Pieterson’s body being carried by high school student Mbuyisa Makhubo, with his sister, Antoinette Sithole, running alongside. I also spoke to them of their method of protest being a peaceful one compared to the youth of today. Today’s youth live in a democratic society: they are not subjected to police or defence force cruelty, they have a right to protest yet they burn down and destroy institutions of empowerment at any opportunity without thinking of the consequence it holds for their future. They engage in drugs and alcohol, destroying their lives before even building them. Burning educational facilities postpones and destroys their chances of making a better life. They must fight peacefully. Let us follow the youth of 1976 and the great leaders that brought change in our country the right way like Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. Learners danced and sang the song freedom is coming tomorrow, we then did a candle light and learners shouted in the crowd “Mayibuye, iAfrika, iAfrika Mayibuye” then the entire school closed the program with the national anthem SHANE HANUMAN Groutville Just do your jobs! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which in laymans term’s is NASA for the oceans and atmosphere, is constantly monitoring climate data and is considered the global leader as a source of information. The severity of an El Niño event is measured by the positive deviation from average sea surface temperatures across a number of sites in the Pacific monitored by NOAA. The data from all these sites shows that as of May 2016, El Niño is effectively over and that there is therefore little reason to expect sub-average rainfall in our region for the coming summer. In addition to this, a severe El Niño event is typically followed by La Niña (the reverse of El Niño), which is measured by negative deviation from average sea surface temperatures. The general consensus is that a 75% chance of La Niña developing over the coming months exists probably by the start of our summer. La Niña typically leads to lower than normal temperatures and higher than normal rainfall for our area. So while the situation remains serious, the likelihood of dams failing in 2017 is very remote. The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 11 NEWS DJ's Records 1979 DJ Reed This is your invitation into a conversational prayer relationship with Him. He wants to speak to you and has a lot of amazing things to say to you and about you. He tells you the awe inspiring things he has done for you, and still wants to do for you. But, unlike ordinary human beings, He does not speak to just give us information. When He speaks, his words are weightier than anyone else’s, because his words have creative power. After all, He created the whole world and all the beauties of creation by simply speaking the word: “Let there be ... and there was.” (See Genesis 1). So when he speaks to you, yes, he probably will give you some important information, but his words will do much more than just that, they will create fresh and amazing things in your life. You can really get to know him, in all his awesomeness as you read the Bible, expecting him to speak to you personally. Read slowly, savouring the nuances of the various ideas. Take time to meditate on the truths and their rich impact on your life. The Bible is a miraculous book that God has placed in our hands. You may ask: “How can you make such a statement?” The supernatural nature of the Book is demonstrated by the following: There are over two hundred prophecies about Jesus in the Jewish section of the Bible. The Jews have kept the scriptures with meticulous care. These prophecies were fulfilled in detail in Jesus’ life. Here are just a few examples: • He was born of a virgin. (Isaiah 7:14) • He was born in Bethlehem. (Micah 5:2) • He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. (Zechariah 9:9) • He was sold for 30 pieces of silver, and this money was used to buy a potter’s field. (Zechariah 11:12) • Jesus, died by crucifixion. (Psalm 22:16) • They gambled for his robe. (Psalm 22:18) Also it is well documented, historically, that Jesus rose from the dead. You might say: “Come off it! How can you prove that?” Because over 500 eyewitnesses spoke boldly of the risen Lord; and many were prepared to die for this fact. Also, thousands of people embraced this truth, within a few weeks of his resurrection, and formed the earliest church, right there in Jerusalem. Jacqueline Herbst Beer pong, live music and excellent company took the Sables beer fest, held at Cane Cutters resort in Sheffield Beach on Saturday, July 9, to the next level of awesome. The festivities, in aid of Sables Creatures, got under way rather slowly at 2pm with cold weather and rain threatening to put people’s mood on ice. However, people kept pouring into the beer garden and they could not resist the lure of a variety of ice cold craft beers on tap alongside established brand name favourites on ice and warm food from the Mozambik mobile kitchen. The party went from zero to 60 in minutes when the team from Specialised Rescue Unit opened the beer pong tables. While the adults frequented the beer garden, kids had their faces painted and expended all their energy, playing on the jungle gyms and trampoline. Crystin Parnell and Brandon Bruwer were the first beer pong winners. ABOVE: Addison Cochran with Debbie and Blake Nicholson ready to have some fun. Le Spice up your life Jacqueline Herbst “People told me I was mad trying to sell pizzas in Shaka’s Head, but the support from the community has been amazing,” said Le Spice restaurant owner, Rodney Philip at the launch of his new eatery on Friday night, July 8. Warm fires and vibey music warmed up a crisp winter’s evening as guests savoured freshly made food under the stars. Describing Le Spice as a continental café/ upmarket shisa nyama dining experience where you can sink your teeth into wood fire pizza, tikka chicken, bunny chow, fragrant curries and shisa nyama. Philip said he has brought a little bit of Ballito to Shakashead. Those who grew up in Pretoria might think they have been transported to a reinvented Casbah, minus the famous “blondie”. Philip said he spent six months building up Le Spice from not much more than a container to the chilled outdoor spot it is today, boasting not only tasty food, but also a pool table and car wash. The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 17 NEWS Are you the next young farmer of the year? Entries for the 2016 Toyota Young Farmer of the Year have officially opened and KZN’s Agricultural Union, Kwanalu, is searching for an outstanding candidate to once again, do KZN proud. In 2015, KZN’s provincial winner, 34-year-old Anthony Goble, a sugarcane, banana and macadamia nut farmer from Tongaat, beat contestants from all over the country to become the Agri SA/Toyota SA Young Farmer of the Year, a first for the province. This year’s national competition takes place in October and the winner will drive away in a brand new Tohota Hilux single cab. “The way the competition is structured is great and the judge’s visit is like a free consultation. The added bonus is a great prize and the opportunity to compete on the national stage and maybe even win a bakkie. I encourage all young farmers to enter - let us keep the trophy in KZN,” said Goble. All young farmers under the age of 35, whether owners or partners in a farm, male or female and who are full members of their province’s agricultural union can enter. Farmers’ business philosophy and the technical competence with which this philosophy is applied are the main features on which farmers are judged. During the selection process, judges visit farmers on their farms to look at all facets of the farmers’ business, including financing, budgets, investment policy, technical aspects of livestock breeding systems, disease control, pasture systems, fertilization and weed control and cultivation practices of crops and orchards. Young farmers are also judged on labour philosophy and housing, attitude and reaction towards land reform and black economic empowerment as well as personnel practices, involvement in organised agriculture and the community and layout and appearance of the farm and farmyard. “We encourage all of our young farmers to enter this year; they are the future of this country’s food security and should be honoured,” said Kwanalu CEO, Sandy La Marque. She said the competition highlighted the great skills and entrepreneurial spirit required to be a successful farmer. Entries for the KZN Young Farmer of the Year competition close on July 29, 2016. For more information or to enter, visit www.kwanalu.co.za or call 033-3429393. Life with a colostomy Embroidery for your eyes Eyebrows are said to be the most important feature of your face. They accentuate your eyes, enhance your expressions and emphasise facial symmetry. But perhaps you are not satisfied with the ones you have. The micro-stoke technique or microblading (aka eyebrow embroidery) is the latest method for creating the most natural looking permanent eyebrows. Gone are the days of stenciled, pasted-on looking eyebrows! Now you can get a ‘tattoo’ that looks completely natural. We spoke to Cindy Brand of Vanilla Beauty Salon in Salt Rock, one of the few local beauticians who offer this service. “This is a very natural option that delivers semi-permanent results. Unlike the sometimes Sharpie-esque effects of permanent makeup, microblading is more of an embroidery of trompe l’œil (a visual illusion) with individual strokes that look just like real hairs,” said Brand. She said the micro-stroke method is considered by the international beauty industry as the highest standard in permanent eyebrows. “During the first appointment I first design the eyebrows using a cosmetic pencil and allow the client to visualise the best shape for their face. Every brow design is unique to suit each Bowel motions are passed out through the stoma and collected in a special disposable colostomy bag which fits over the stoma and sticks to the skin around it. The new R8 isn't just an exceptionally rapid Audi - it's quite simply the most powerful, fastest production car to ever wear the four rings. And its vital statistics are galvanising. No, electrifying. The new R8 comes, at the moment, in just two Àavours. The R8 V10 quattro S tronic, and the V10 Plus quattro S tronic. The V8 version is no more. I'm not going to dwell on the ¿rst of these. At last week's media launch at Kyalami we didn't get to drive it. Besides, the vast, overwhelming majority of new R8's sold will be the more powerful, halo Plus model - which I am going to tell you about. Now those vital statistics include 449kW and 560Nm at 6,500rpm from a free-revving, naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 that will redline at a giddy 8,700rpm. Ample to scorch, the R8 goes from rest to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, topping out at 330km/h. And it'll run from zero to 200km/h in 9.9 seconds. That puts it smack in supercar territory. But - and this is a big "but" - there's way more to the R8 than cold statistics. Try, for one, styling that has subtly evolved from the original, while keeping the cabin-forward design, long back, and comparatively short wheelbase. And naturally those iconic sideblades, ¿nished in gloss carbon, are still present and correct, although they're now deliberately interrupted by the car's shoulder line, while the Plus model comes complete with ¿xed rear wing. Dwell on this car a little - as owners and onlookers are likely to do - and you get the strangest sense that it belongs not in 2016, but in 2026. Then there's the driving experience. The R8 promises all the everyday usability, tractability and even (relatively speaking) practicality of its forebear, with the slick, rapid-shifting seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission adding to the user-friendliness of the car - and its visceral thrills when you light it up. Indeed, on hot laps of Kyalami, the midengined R8 V10 Plus quattro proved well... extraordinary. At full chat it's almost like being in a video game, with that sports suspension mated to a quattro drivetrain pouring on prodigious grip. Yet at the same time it's alive, tactile, and utterly controllable - even under duress - while standard ceramic brakes are fade-free and perfectly modulated. This car Àatters medium-level drivers into feeling like pros, while aluminium-intensive construction means a dry weight of just 1 454kg. Which translates into a wicked level of wieldiness. And of course it's an Audi. So it's exquisitely built with an interior that makes you weep. Indeed, from driver-centred cockpit to the turbine-shaped controls for the automatic airconditioner to the lightweight bucket seats ¿nished in Alcantara or Nappa leather, you get the impression that keeping costs down really wasn't a factor when building this car. Equipment levels are stellar. Of course. And you can expect the Audi Virtual cockpit, ¿rst seen on the TT, Bang & Olufsen sound, LED lights (with the option of laser lights), and R8 Performance steering wheel in perforated leather with multifunction plus and four control satellites, as well as MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch. The whole package, meanwhile, rolls on 19-inch wheels, with the option of 20-inchers. You'll pay R2,630,500 for the R8 V10 quattro S tronic, and R2,970,000 for the Plus model - which of course is the one we've been dwelling on. That includes a standard ¿ve-year/100,000km Audi Freeway Plan, an evocative soundtrack... and the sneaking suspicion that, if anything, Audi is losing money on those cars. Yes, it's that adjective-defying, that Àawless. LAST STOCK! CALL US TODAY! All the hot hatch-like trinkets probably give it away, but Adam over here has had a ¿ery chili shoved up the tailpipe to create what some are referring to as a 'warm' hatchback. Personally, I think that's a bit of a rude term. If you read my piece in last week's paper on the Opel Corsa Sport, you'll know I'm a big fan of a toned down hot-hatch; something that is true to the roots of the segment. This looks to be more of that. The Adam S does more to show off it's ¿ery underpinnings than the Corsa Sport. Deeper skirts and bumpers start us off, while a sneaky rear wing tops things off, literally. It looks suitably belligerent, like the spoilt teenager that might come to own one only with loads more charm. Eighteen-inch alloys housing brakes from the Corsa OPC to round off the look. On the inside Big bucket seats dominate the space in the Adam, which honestly is already lacking. If you're long in the leg, you're unlikely to accommodate someone behind you as the driver, such is the extent of space dominated by the seats. That said, they are marvelous seats. Supportive, comfortable and they look amazing. There are red bits all over the show and 'S' badges to remind you what car you bought aside from which you'll ¿nd everything that a normal Adam might have. Behind the wheel The Adam S is powered by the same 1.4-litre turbo four pot as you'll ¿nd in the Corsa Sport. ∙O Continued onon page 235 Continued page The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 AUTODEALER ∙ Continued from page 224 O Continued from page LAND ROVER APPROVED. LOOK HOW FAR WE GO. Accordingly there are 110kW and 220 torques. It's plenty in a car of this stature, but don't come thinking you'll be keeping up with Polo GTI's light-tolight. That aside, braking is impressive, and the ride is not bad considering the oversized rims. It's grippy, chuckable and the six-speed manual gearshift is sweet. Negatives? The electric steering is numb, like the Corsa Sport. Pricing At R330,000 it sure ain't cheap. The closest competitor is probably something like the Fiat 500 Abarth, which hits price lists at R355,000 odd. The Fiat has even more charm and street cred, but is less practical and not as well equipped. Verdict People might say the Adam S is a 'warm' hatch, but it certainly excites more than that. It's funky looking, so you'll stand out in the crowd and it has enough go to satisfy most needs. The Fiat might well win on overall lunacy, but the sensible choice is de¿nitely the Adam. E&OE. 23 AUTODEALER The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 T his year's KZN leg of the 4x4 X-Track Racing Season will take place on 23 July at Highstakes, Cato Ridge from 9am to 5pm. Get there early to avoid missing the action! This year, the obstacles are even more extreme, which presents great spectator value for a full action-packed Day. Here are some basic rules for spectators to better understand what they are watching: Time trial This is completed only once by each competitor, normally at the start of the day. The objective is to get around the time trial coarse with the quickest time. Normal obstacles Vehicles start with 60 points and have to navigate through a pegged route. For each peg touched 20 points are lost and for every rollback/ reverse, 10 points will be lost. Progressive obstacles Vehicles start with zero points and have to navigate through a nearly impossible pegged route. The further you get through the obstacle, the more points you get. Only one rollback/ reverse is allowed per progressive obstacle. Any outside assistance, be it help from a spectator, ends in disquali¿cation for that obstacle. If the vehicle rolls over and is unable to continue, it means zero for that obstacle. Entrance is R40 for adults and R20 for children under 14. Contact 031 713 2218. Its 126kW and 234Nm petrol engine slotted in at the back of the ¿eld when it came to performance, especially at altitudes where a turbo would have helped, but then again, this was a bus with seating for up to nine people. In 2010 they added a diesel engine to the mix, and in January this year gave the range a facelift and added a few more luxury and safety features. These include a revised dash layout, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, climate control, rear park distance sensors, glove-box cooling, side airbags and an electronic stability control system to keep the plot together when things got dodgy on the road. The steering wheel is now leather covered, as is the gear knob, and it has controls for the cruise control and sound system. There's also a new bumper and grille, along with new 16" alloy wheels. The bus sent to us for evaluation was the H1 turbodiesel nine-seater bus with a ¿ve-speed automatic transmission. This delivers 125kW at 4,400 rpm and 440Nm of torque from 2,000 to 2,250, which allows it to reach the 100km/h benchmark in 14,4 seconds. Top speed is claimed to be an academic 180km/h, which places it near the head of the class in terms of performance. It's a lovely performer on the road, and that gravelly engine sound adds personality rather than detracting from the driving experience. The gearbox works well enough despite not having a sixth gear, and there's loads of torque available wherever the rev counter needle is pointing. Space is what it's really about, and there's lots of that. There are eight full seats, but the table top/ console unit between the driver and passenger can be unfolded into a third front seat if required - as long as the occupant isn't a 120kg two-metre tall rugby player. I really enjoyed the Hyundai, and could imagine converting one into a camper van with a towbar for a motorcycle trailer. The downside is that the damage inÀicted upon our currency has hit Hyundai harder than other manufacturers, who earn import credits for the cars they send overseas. Hyundai imports all their cars, so full duties are payable and the H1 diesel bus now retails at R614,900. The petrol version with a manual transmission kicks off at a more reasonable R499,900, but the diesel version's performance makes it much more appealing. It comes with a ¿ve year warranty on the vehicle and a seven-year / 200,000km warranty on the drivetrain, as well as a ¿ve-year / 90,000km service plan. A good turnout of around 60 boys and girls varying in age from six to fifteen took to the courts playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles round-robin matches with all finals At the Net taking place on Saturday. It was great to host a few families from out of town, some from as far afield as Richards Bay and Vryheid. The finals day proved to be one of the best so far with some very closelycontested matches. Parents were biting their nails and emotions were running high (sometimes too high!) as the kids fought their hearts out to impress themselves and their families. There was only one triple-winner this year with eight-year-old Robyn Urquhart taking the honors in all under nine events singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Jaimie Fisher, Isabella Wilson, Joe Hill, Sophie Hulett, Kiara Dura, Josh Heath and Chanel Bates all made it two out of three. Karate South Africa (KSA) youth head coach, Brando Pillay passed his referees kata (forms) exam with flying colours at the World Youth Cup in Croatia two weeks ago. Brando, who achieved his world karate federation coaching licence for kumite last year and regularly conducts coaching workshops in Tongaat , headed the team KSA delegation to the world youth cup. “The course was attended by almost a hundred aspiring referees from around the globe (56 countries). Passing the tough exam at the conclusion of the course was very gratifying” said Brando, who also serves as the technical convenor of karate KZN. As a WKF licenced coach Brando can now coach any national team around the globe at international karate events. The president of KSA, Sonny Pillay Hanshi, paid tribute to the national coaching commission of KSA. “Our coaches like Brando Pillay are making great strides in the international karate arena around the globe and I look forward to them taking the youth of KSA to the next level”, said Pillay. The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 31 SPORT Mamba madness Elana Geist skate his way to winning the junior division, while Mamba skate park owner, Troy O’Sullivan, hung onto his title once again. “Both events were great and we would like to give a huge shout out to everyone who supported us,” said O’Sullivan. Check out more photos and videos on their Facebook page - Mamba Skate. Top South African, adrenaline-pumped skateboarders united at Salt Rock’s Mamba Skate Park recently for two of their biggest events of the year - the King of the Mamba and Peg Lunar Projects 2016. Supported by Red Bull and Gunslinger Longboards, the King of the Mamba saw fast, action-packed skating, with a few big wipeouts, which did not stop the competitors from having another go at claiming the crown. Ballito local, Eben Combrinck was crowned King, with Lungelo Mntambo coming in a close second and Jordy Johnson hot on their heels in third. A few days later, the skate park under the trees turned into an electrifying, light show with skateboarders racing through smoke and lasers in the Peg Lunar Projects event. The spectators took in the visual feast, while keeping warm around two flaming bonfires, sipping on one of the many beers on tap and listening The top three King of the Mamba juniors, from left, Richto the tunes from Red Bull’s truck. Richard Browning managed to ard Browning, Blake Duncan and Luke St Claire Mulley. Photo: Kevin Sawyer A grueling swim for a good cause Elana Geist The annual Four Elements Ocean Challenge recently saw about 90 swimmers, including Ballito’s Vladimir Lynov, jump into the rough, cold Indian Ocean for a 5,5 kilometre swim. At 67, Lynov was proud to be one of the oldest swimmers to compete in the Durban beachfront swim from Vetch’s pier to the Moses Mabhida Stadium pier, even though he said it nearly killed him. “When I woke up on the morning of the swim, I heard the branches cracking outside and saw there was a big storm. When we arrived at the beach in Durban, the waves were huge and the water was cold, but we swam,” said Lynov, who trains every morning in the Thompson’s Bay tidal pool with his swimming friends, Jose de Charmoy and Mike Oberholzer, who also took part in the race. “The first hour of the swim was good. The south westerly wind helped me, but when we started swimming to shore, things got difficult. The waves came and they broke over me. I swam and swam, but the waves kept coming. It was terrible - I Fish Eagle thought I was going to die.” With a little assistance from a jetski, the Russian swimmer made it to the finish line and completed the challenge - which aims to raise funds and awareness about the Four Elements Environmental Scholarship - in just under two hours. Mike Oberholzer, Vladimir Lynov and Jose de Charmoy relieved and tired after the swim through the huge waves. Fishing conditions were not at their best at the beginning of last week because of the bad weather at the weekend and it took a few days before the surf settled. Another West came through and angling was out of the question again. Fortunately, by Friday morning fishing conditions improved and anglers were looking forward to the weekend. As expected, the fishing was quiet during the first half of the week because of adverse conditions but as the water calmed, so the anglers were back on the beach and found fish on the bite again. A friend visited the Glenashley area on Friday, found promising surf conditions and proceeded to throw a spoon. He had four throws and landed four nice shad with anglers in the area also catching fish on bait. On hearing the news, my brother decided to have a few throws the next morning and he was on the beach well before first light. He pulled his first shad at around 5.45am in the dark, missed another and never had another bite on sardine. At 7am anglers fishing in the area with sealice bait started pulling pompano throw for throw. Every sealice bait that was cast into the water produced a pompano, some of the fish weighing between two to three kilos. One angler finished up the morning with nine pompano and the other anglers fishing with sealice caught pompano as well. My brother Vaughn Nundkisun caught this salmon of 10kg at the Tugela mouth. The fish took a live mullet. just sat on the beach and watched because he had come to the beach prepared to catch shad with sardine bait. He said that in all the years that he had been fishing in the surf, he had never seen the pompano feeding as they were that morning. Sea conditions were ideal for pompano on Saturday morning. The surf was fairly flat and the water nice and clean. The small pompano have been on the bite for some time now and anglers have been catching these fish in several areas, so maybe this is the year of the pompano. Last year it was the year of the copper bream and the bronzies before it Michael Brosnihan flying down the mamba. Photo: Kevin Sawyer South Africa has some of the most scenic runs and often takes runners to places few ever go to. This weekend our Dolphins were out taking part in some of this most magOn the Road country’s nificent and challenging runs. Congratulations to Danny and Pam Holton who completed the 19th Rhodes Trail Run. This year’s participants started in minus seven degrees and experienced very tough conditions due to the drought. A route change and loose underfoot conditions also added to making it more technically challenging. Definitely not for the faint-hearted. Danny completed in 7 hours 52 minutes and placed 27th overall and Pam finished in 8 hours and 50 minutes. Danny is only one of only two people to have taken part and completed all 19 runs. On the other side of the country, Dolphins were enjoying all the Knysna Oyster Festival had to offer. On Saturday Barry (2:02) and Debbie (2:28) Holland completed the Momentum Cape Times Knysna forest half marathon. The next day Marc McClure and Ross Holland took part in the stunning Houtkapper trail run. This trail run offers three routes of varying lengths and difficulty and takes runners through the forests made famous by was the turn of small brusher that were also caught in numbers along the coast. The shad are becoming more numerous now with some really nice fish being caught with several anglers complaining that they have had traces bitten off by the larger fish. It seems as if the anglers that arrive on the beach well before first light are the guys that have been scoring best of all and limit bags have been recorded. It must be remembered that the shoals of shad are moving all the time so it is not uncommon for shad to be caught during the day as pockets of these fish move inshore to feed. Unfortunately more and more anglers are fishing for shad and fishing can become very unpleasant when there is a big crowd. This is why it is sometimes difficult to get news of nice sized fish being caught because the experienced anglers try to keep the news quiet. A lot of garrick have been caught in the Tugela area along with some big shad and a few salmon. Live baits, spoon, plugs and other lures have all been working and some large fish have been landed. Local anglers should try the river mouths and although they may have to be a bit patient, they should catch a garrick or two especially on the outgoing tide period. The garrick make a beautiful pickled fish. The South Coast gamefish anglers have been catching some really big couta recently and I heard this week that a monster of 54kg was caught. This is just a couple of kilos short of the record that was set many, many years ago. Unfortunately the sea has been bumpy for much of last week and this kept the local anglers off the water but conditions should be more favourable this week. Sealice popular South African author, Daleen Mathee. Congratulations to Ross who placed second in the 9km trail run category. The race organisers said the 27km route was developed not only to challenge the intermediate to experienced trail runners but also to provide them with the rare opportunity to experience the deepest secrets at the heart of the Knysna forest. On completion of this route Mark commented, “this was the toughest race of my life”. Runners seem to have short memories, as this is a statement I have heard so many times before. However, they can often be found lining up again the following year. I wonder whether Mark will be back again, perhaps with a few more Dolphins in tow? Back at home the Jump Starters completed a solid 5km run on Saturday morning. For some this was the longest run that they have ever done. Well done for persevering over the last four weeks as you continue to get fit. We are starting to slowly increase the mileage as we work towards the 10 or 21km SAPS Striders race on September 11. Remember your goal and that nothing worth having ever came easy. Our awards evening will take place this Saturday, July 16 and will celebrate the Dolphins’ awesome year in running. Booking essential, please speak to Bev. The ticket price includes a meal and live music. Sarah Ross Holland was placed second in the 9km Houtkapper trail run in Knysna. “CATCH OF THE WEEK” Fishing joy! Hercules Dhundu with a stumpnose of 1,6kg he caught at Sheffield beach using a pink prawn as bait. NOW OPEN IN BALLITO UNIT 4, ADAM PARK, GARLICKE DRIVE, BALLITO 032 586 0704 32 The North Coast Courier, July 15, 2016 Sport Dolphins end season in style Murray Cup knockout tournament by that solidarity point despite a far superior points difference and tries for total. That said, compared to where the team was for the last two previous seasons, bottom of the standings and not recording a win for 23 games, the players can be proud that they have put the Dolphins firmly back on the map in first division rugby in KZN and are definitely a team for the future. The junior section has also come on in leaps and bounds after not being functional for over three years, to being the second and third rated teams in various junior age groups.
