SOMETHING PATRICK-AL “AUTHOR!!” “AUTHOR!!” He hated his job - every minute of it! — in a Boston customs house. Ledgers, import levies, and ships’ tonnage were not his forte. One day - no surprise! - he was fired. Dejected, facing the harsh reality of not working, finding another job, he thought himself a failure. When he told his wife about it, her glee astonished him. “Now you can write your book! I know you can do it!” He did not share her optimism, and besides, “How will we support ourselves while I am writing it?” She ‘fessed up, having saved house-keeping money, a little each week. She figured that if they were careful, they could manage for several months, perhaps even a year. And so, Nathaniel Hawthorne began writing ... The Scarlet Letter. No doubt Hawthorne’s tale of Hester Pyrenne, Arthur Dimsdale, and others in colonial New England was “simmering” long before he lost his job. Perhaps even, creating those characters and imagining their story made his toil in the customs house almost bearable. An author’s idea, when put to paper, can be feit, seen, and heard. Writing that book, crafting its story, developing its characters, changing a scene, revising a conversation [and before word processing!] - quite a task! The story energized its author, and The Scarlet Letter has long been a widely-read literary classic. This Trinity Sunday, might we think of God as “author”? His “idea”? — a people created in His image, formed in His likeness. Jesus, God’s Son born of Mary, “...like us in all things but sin ... “ is God’s idea, God’s own self made flesh. The Spirit “ ...proceeding from the Father and the Son”, we profess in the Creed - gives life to the idea, energizing and inspiring those who embrace it. Scripture is God’s book, God’s Word - its panorama of salvation history to inspire and challenge us. The Gospels are especially God’s book - the words and ways of Jesus, so faithfully handed on by the Evangelists and our early Church. But, we are also God’s book in a way — God’s idea taking shape, en-fleshed, in us. God’s every gift is ours “ . . . to renew the face of the earth”. Our “chapter” in God’s book? — no one else has it, ever had it, nor ever will have it — God’s to craft in love, and ours to live with God’s gift of free will. God as “author”.... That thought finds voice in an Opening Prayer at Mass for Trinity Sunday today: “God, we praise you: Father all powerful, Christ Lord and Savior, Spirit of love. You reveal yourself in the depths of our being, drawing us to share in your life and your love. One God, three Persons, be near to the people formed in your image, close to the world your love brings to life”. God’s presence, fulfilling that prayer, makes for quite a story - indeed, your story and mine. Imagine it! God! “- - ...near to the people formed in your image, close to the world your love brings to life”. Our living that prayer each day? — that’s when God’s “book” becomes a best seller! Blessings galore ! 2 Church of Saint Patrick Huntington, New York STEWARDSHIP: TIME, TALENT & TREASURE Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity May 22, 2016 3 PARISH MINISTERS STEWARDSHIP: TIME, TALENT & TREASURE PRESIDER SCHEDULE WEEKLY COLLECTION MAY 14/MAY 15 $24,680.00 EFT Total Weekly Collection Budget Variance Saturday, 5:00PM May 28, 2016 Msgr. WebSite: http://www.wwme.org Church of Saint Patrick Huntington, New York TEEN MINISTRY Solemnity of the Holy TTrinity rinity There is likely nothing more important in a person’s faith than the way that they understand the infinite mystery of God. Today we celebrate the fullest expression of that understanding: the Trinity. Christians believe that God is three in one, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But so what? For many of us this simply means that there is an old guy with a beard, his son Jesus and a dove hanging out together in heaven. So what? What does that have to do with us down here on earth? Believe it or not, everything. When we call God “Father” we are not talking about some old guy with a beard. We are saying that God, who is the infinite source of all things, is also our Father. Dad. Daddy. Pop. Imagine your dad on the day you were born. His joy could not be contained. You could not wipe the smile off his face. (I hope that was the case for you). Being a parent is a type of love that many of us never imagined before it happened. Now imagine that joy on the face of God as He looks down on you right now (and on your parents, grandparents etc because we are children in His eyes). Your life is now and always will be in God’s hands. Just as your dad held you close, threw you in the air, played with, taught you all kinds of things, so too your heavenly Father takes great delight in you. When we call God “Son” we are celebrating the fact this infinite God has actually taken flesh and lived in our midst. If God were a human being what would He be like? That question has already been answered. If “Father” tells us that God is love, then “Son” tells us the meaning of love in human form. Divine and human love come together in Jesus. While Jesus is the Son with a capital S, you and I are “sons” and “daughters” as well. I am God’s son. You are God’s son or daughter. Now the question before us is this: will we become who we are? According to Jesus, this requires a “change of heart”. We must start recognizing the extraordinary dignity we have as children of God and live accordingly. Goodbye selfishness (as best we can), hello love and grace. When we call God the Holy Spirit this has nothing to do with ghosts or doves. The Spirit is the power and presence of God inside of us and connecting us. The Spirit is not so much a person as the inner dynamic of that person. If you have been on a team, you know that the success of the team is based on more than individual talent. It requires passion and energy and teamwork. The same is true if you have ever been part of a theatre group or chorus. When it comes to our faith, the Holy Spirit is the passion and energy within that draws us to God and fills us with divine energy. Divine energy looks like love, compassion, forgiveness, and faith. Divine energy creates a community of faith like sports energy creates a team. The Trinity: an old guy with a beard, and Jesus on a throne and a bird flying around? Instead, how about believing in God’s infinite and eternal love for you personally, revealed in Jesus Christ and trying to make His way into your heart and soul each day? Works much better for me.
