chair; front edge of keyboard even with edge of

• disk drives placed for easy
access and disks within

keyboard; top raised for
easy reading

Keying Position
The features of proper position are shown at right and
listed below:
• fingers curved and upright
over home keys
• wrists low, but not touching
keyboard
• forearms parallel to slant of
keyboard
• body erect, sitting back in
chair
• feet on floor for balance

1.Find the home keys on the

2.Locate and place your fingers on the home keys on
your keyboard with your
fingers well curved and
upright (not slanting).

3.Remove your fingers from
the keyboard; then place
them in home-key position
again, curving and holding
them lightly on the keys.

Techniques: Home
Keys and Spacebar
1.Read the hints and study
the illustrations at the right.
2.Place your fingers in homekey position as directed in
1C above.
Keystroking: Strike each key with a light tap with the tip of the finger, snapping the fingertip toward the palm
of the hand.
Spacing: Strike the Space Bar with the right thumb; use a quick down-and-in motion (toward the palm). Avoid
pauses before or after spacing.
3.Strike the key for each letter in the first group below
the illustration.
4.After striking ; (semicolon),
strike the Space Bar once.
5.Continue to key the line;
strike the Space Bar once
at the point of each arrow.
Space once.
6.Review proper position
(1 B); then repeat Steps 3-5
above.

1.Read the information and
study the illustration at the
right.
2.Practice the ENTER key
reach several times.

Hard Return
To return the insertion point to the
left margin and move it down to
the next line, strike ENTER.
This is called a hard return.
Use a hard return at the end of all
drill lines. Use two hard returns

double-space.
Hard Return Technique
Reach the little finger of the right
hand to the ENTER key, tap the key,
and return the finger quickly to
home-key position.
