Music Row Communications, LLC 1231 17th Ave. S., Nashville, TN 37212 615-349-2171 www.musicrow.com ——————————————— MusicRow’s phones are working once again! Our new number is (615) 349-2171 You Oughta To Be In Pictures by Peter Cronin Nashville writers looking for an alternative outlet for their musings would do well to take a close look at the upcoming 2010 Nashville Screenwriters Conference. The annual gathering of screenwriters, songwriters, directors, producers and other assorted celluloid junkies will convene June 4-7 at Nashville’s Union Station Hotel, and the stage is already set for one of the best conferences in the event’s 12-year history. Established in 1998 by financial guru Gary Haber, screenwriter Leslie Bohem and producer Karen Murphy, the conference has built an enviable reputation among Hollywood’s creative elite and has grown into "one of the best screenwriters conferences in America" according to Script Magazine. One reason for that steady growth is the tireless work and passion provided by 821 Entertainment Group’s Anastasia Brown. Not own surprisingly, Brown’s Anastasia Br ©2010, MusicRow Communications, LLC—ALL RIGHTS RESERVED annual Music in the Movies Luncheon & Panel (which is sponsored this year by ole Music Publishing) has grown into one of the conference’s not-to-be-missed events. The open-to-the-public panel takes place at the Country Music Hall of Fame and costs an additional $40. According to Brown, it’s a perfect way for Nashville scribes to get some hands-on experience at writing for film and TV. And while she acknowledges a bit of a learning curve for Nashville writers, the potential for those writers and for the community at large is limitless. “Songs are like little movie scripts in three minutes, and Nashville is certainly a town full of storytellers” she says. “One of the real challenges for this community is that these writers don’t have the actual scenes to write from. They have to learn to serve the scene, not themselves.” news@musicrow.com page 2 ©2010, MusicRow Communications, LLC—ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Friday, May 14, 2010 news@musicrow.com page 3 To surmount that obstacle and lessen that learning curve, Brown invites some of Hollywood’s top music supervisors to her luncheon to play selected scenes or read scenes from upcoming, as-yet un-scored films. The panel presents the opportunity for individuals to submit music for placement in upcoming projects. This year, Brown invited music supervisor Julia Michels (Sex and the City 1 and 2, The Blind Side, The Devil Wears Prada); Universal Pictures President of Film & Music Publishing, Mike Knobloch (Avatar, Crazy Heart, Alvin and the Chipmunks); Music Supervisor Andrea Von Foerster (500 Days of Summer, It's Kind of A Funny Story, Stargate Universe); Music Supervisor Howard Paar (Hung, Monster, L Word); and Music Supervisor, Dave Jordan (Iron Man 1&2, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, The Upside of Anger). Over the years, the Music In Movies panel has created its share of success stories. A few years back, when scenes for the then-unreleased film August Rush were shown, songwriter Lucas Reynolds of the band Blue Merle responded with “Something Inside,” and the song was featured prominently in the film. Songwriter Steve Diamond also hit pay dirt, placing a song in the hit film, Santa Claus 2. With their busy schedules, visiting panelists can’t possibly listen to the hundreds of songs submitted, so Brown and 821 Entertainment serve as a clearing house, narrowing down the list of submitted material. And while she acknowledges the “you-really-haveto-live-there” aspect of writing for the screen, for Brown the conference is also about enlightening Hollywood’s creative community to the unique creative nuances that have always made Nashville such a special place. “Our ultimate goal is to generate films that are created, filmed, scored, controlled and financed by Nashville,” Brown says. “Music City is suffering, and film and TV are real areas of growth that represent a way to bring in more pennies and boost Nashville’s economy.” For more information and a complete 2010 Nashville Screenwriters Conference schedule, visit www.nashscreen.com. The disc was placed in the iTunes country section and promoted with high visibility banners. However, on SoundScan, the new album was not deemed country and not included on the Country top Current 75 albums sales chart. "Every album is looked at on a case by case basis," says Billboard Nashville Senior Chart Manager Wade Jessen. "It's not about any controversy. With respect to Court Yard Hounds there simply isn't much of anything driving it to justify a country connection. Sony Nashville isn't involved, and no single is being promoted to country radio. However, if something changes we would re-examine it." —DMR news@musicrow.com page 4 Friday, May 14, 2010 Army Wives Recruits Wynonna Industry News by Peter Cronin BMI Nashville Reopens BMI’s Nashville office is back open (5/13), with all employees returning to the building for business as usual. “We’re all relieved to be getting back to normal,” says Jody Williams, BMI VP, Writer/Publisher Relations. “Right now, our thoughts are with our many neighbors who are still suffering the effects of the flood.” While BMI’s vital systems remained fully operational in the midst of last week’s devastating floods, the six-story building experienced a lack of water pressure and air conditioning, prompting most of the Nashville office’s 400 employees to work remotely. “Writer’s Block” This Sunday Don’t forget. This Sunday (5/16), May 16, Nashville’s Listening Room Café will host the First Annual Writer’s Block featuring performances from a long list of top songwriters and artists including Jeffrey Steele, Rivers Rutherford, Kirsti Manna, Bridgette Tatum, Andy Griggs, Danny Myrick, Dylan Altman, Greg Barnhill, Chris Blair, Deanna Bryant, Lisa Carvers, Megan Conner, Steve Dean, George Ducas, Lorna Flowers, Julie Forester, Mark Stephen Jones, Lindsay Lawler, Whitney Layne, Brice Long, Lance Miller, Alissa Moreno, Eric Pasley, Stephen Salyers, Chas Sandford, Sarah Silva, Arlos Smith, Tiffany, Trent Tomlinson, Bruce Wallace, Brian White, D. Vincent Williams, Karyn Williams, Rachel Williams, and Mike Willis—with more artists confirming daily. GAC’s Storme Warren and MuzikMafia’s Two Foot Fred will emcee the event, with a percentage of the proceeds raised benefiting Hands On Nashville to help underwrite their flood volunteer management efforts. Compass Bluegrass Helps Flood Relief The good folks over at Compass Records are getting ready to hold their annual sale on the label’s extensive catalog of bluegrass releases, and this year’s sale will double as a benefit for bluegrass musicians affected by the recent catastrophic flood. The company will donate $5 from the sale of any bluegrass CD to the Bluegrass Trust Fund to help flood victims. Artist News by Peter Cronin Parton Joins Country Gospel Hall of Fame The Country Gospel Music Association has inducted Dolly Parton into the Country Gospel Hall Of Fame. The ceremony took place at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Gospel and country star Donny Richmond made the presentation. Parton was recognized for her many gospel compositions and recordings, including “God’s Coloring Book,” “Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man,” “The Seeker,” “Sacred Memories,” “Comin’ For To Carry Me Home,” “Letter To Heaven” and “Coat Of Many Colors.” Curb records artist Wynonna Judd guest stars as herself in an upcoming episode of the Lifetime Television drama series, Army Wives. In the episode titled Evasive Maneuvers premiering Sunday, May 16 at 9:00 PM CT, Fort Marshall is buzzing with anticipation of an upcoming USO concert featuring a special performance by Judd and John Ondrasik’s Five for Fighting. Wynonna Tyler Reeve Joins Country Throwdown Tour Americana/country artist Tyler Reeve has been selected as one of the few independent acts to perform on the inaugural 2010 Country Throwdown Tour, set to kick off May 14, in Tampa, Fla. With a lineup that includes major label artists Jamey Johnson, Montgomery Gentry, Jack Ingram and Little Big Tyler Reeve Town, Reeve will serve as the tour’s official “BBQ Band” and one of the only unsigned performers on the bill. Reeve and his band will open the shows, then fire up the grill at the end of the night to serve food for the rest of the acts. www.TylerReeve.com Radio News Joyce Rizer Goes Bald For The Cure Sirius XM Radio Exec. Producer Joyce Rizer took a drastic step in her fundraising campaign for the "Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure" and shaved her shoulder length black hair. Rizer jokingly posted on Facebook that if anyone wanted to donate $300 to her walk, she was sure her husband, who had recently started shaving his head, would grow his hair back. Her younger brother turned the tables saying that he’d make a $300 donation if Joyce would shave her head. Joyce Rizer Within a couple of hours, two of her friends offered to match it. Joyce agreed to step up to the challenge providing her other brother participate, bringing the total to $1200. To sweeten the deal, Joyce offered to let her brothers shave her head while she was home in Illinois for Mother's Day. “It’s just hair,” Joyce shrugs. “Compared to what these women go through in the fight against breast cancer—to borrow lyrics from a Craig Morgan song—’this ain’t nothin’.’” To make a donation and view photos / video please visit www.the3day.org/ goto/jmrizer. Rascal Flatts is also currently nominated for Best Group Video (for “Here Comes Goodbye”) at the 2010 CMT Music Awards which will air live on CMT June 8. Spin Zone by Jon Freeman Rascal Flatts hangs tough at No. 1 for a second week with “Unstoppable,” despite a small downward trend in spins. Ross Tweetsters will recall that last week Ms. Julianne Hough was leaning heavily on Mr. Danny Gokey's chart position, with only 111 followers keeping them apart. And now the long predicted transfer has taken place. Ms. Hough has danced (DWTS alum) her way up our chart from No. 7 to No. 6 and in the process moved the Idol Alum down one position in the process (Hough now leads by 226 followers). Rascal Flatts “Unstoppable” is fighting for that top spot as well, and sticks at the No. 2 position. Moving up through the Top 10 are offerings like Eric Church’s “Hell On The Heart” at No. 4, Reba’s “I Keep On Loving You” at No. 5, Justin Moore’s “Backwoods” at No. 6, and Brad Paisley’s “Water” at No. 7.
