Coastal charm, outdoor adventure,
and sea-inspired artisans
F
rom the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Town
Lunenburg, featuring its colourful waterfront and narrow streets, to the inspiring views of the coast and its
40-plus lighthouses, the South Shore is much more than the
home of Bluenose II and the must-photograph Peggy’s Cove.
It is a place where you can live in the moment, let your mind
wander, and surprise yourself, perhaps by rowing a traditional dory near Cape Sable Island or throwing an axe with
six-time World Log Rolling Champion Darren Hudson at his
Lumberjack AXEperience in Barrington.
South Shore
Make some new connections with people and place at the
Port Medway Readers’ Festival. At Kejimkujik National Park and
National Historic Site, discover Mi’kmaw petroglyphs etched
in rock, with the help of an interpreter, and experience stunning
stargazing in the Dark Sky Preserve.
Culinary delights abound here, and fresh and delicious seafood serves as the cornerstone of many delectable dining
experiences, like the famed Shore Club Lobster Suppers in
Hubbards, which has served more than one million lobster
suppers in the past 70 years. After a stroll along historic Dock
Street in Shelburne, take a few steps up to the quaint Charlotte
Lane Café, two-time winner of the Nova Scotia Best Small
Restaurant Award. Tasty seafood is never far!

Taste of Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia’s South Shore is a feast for your senses where local seafood serves as the cornerstone of many succulent dining
experiences. Restaurants like rhubarb, Mateus Bistro, and
Charlotte Lane Café are just a few reasons to make the South
Shore one of your culinary destinations.
The historic town of Lunenburg is one of Nova Scotia’s culinary hot-spots. Taste

using many locally sourced ingredients.
One of the secrets to an amazing food experience is finding the perfect setting.

for over 70 years. With its scenic ocean view, the Galley Restaurant & Lounge
serves up fresh lobster, seafood chowder, mussels, and more.
Whether you’re enjoying lunch at the Biscuit Eater Café or lobster fondue at the

Here you will find unspoiled landscapes, majestic seascapes, and—clinging to the coastline
between them—captivating vibrant communities. Don’t forget to pack your camera.
Fort Point Lighthouse, Liverpool
Lunenburg Waterfront
This distinctive “hunchbacked” light is the thirdoldest surviving lighthouse in Nova Scotia. Become
an unofficial lighthouse keeper and go inside to
sound the hand-cranked foghorn and explore the
historical interpretive display (see page 103).
Red wooden warehouses, brightly hued heritage
homes, and crystal-blue water make the Lunenburg
waterfront a jewel-toned tapestry. The best view is
from the golf course on the other side of the harbour
(see page 102).
Hawk Beach, Cape Sable Island
Peggy’s Cove
This beach, with pristine white sand stretching
seemingly forever toward a backdrop of sparkling
blue surf, is one of the best places for birdwatching.
View Nova Scotia’s tallest lighthouse and a
“drowned forest” from here, the most southerly
point in Nova Scotia (see page 112).
Probably the most-photographed lighthouse in
Canada, the Peggy’s Point Lighthouse is a mustcapture for every visitor’s photo album. Just be careful
on the wet rocks—they can be slippery! Nearby the
William E. deGarthe Memorial Monument, a basrelief sculpture chiseled from the granite of a
30-metre rock face, depicts the lives and legends of
local fishermen. peggyscoveregion.com
Historic Shelburne Waterfront
Shelburne’s beautiful wooden buildings and
maritime essence combined with an historic streetscape free of power lines make it easy to capture a

Beachiness is a word.
Along with the sandy, hand-holding simplicity of sun-soaked days
at the seashore, comes a language native to White Point.
We shuck, we smudge, we plank year-round, and we make a distinct
“fwap” with the cottage door as we head for a round of golf. Here on the
South Shore, you’ll find time for skipping stones, tossing shoes, and
roasting marshmallows to gooey perfection. (S’moring.) You’ll sing along,
sip along, surf, nap, splash, unwind, and revel in the rustic, lobstery,
beachiness of it all.
