Merry Christmas to you all
Full to bursting again! Just like Christmas stockings in a few weeks. The editors of the Forncett Flyer
would like to wish all our readers a very happy and satisfying Christmas, with plenty of events to
amuse and entertain you in the diary column opposite. We would like to thank all who have
contributed to this newsletter over the past year, including the Parish Council and our advertisers
who keep us financially afloat: also the team of people who faithfully deliver each edition whatever
the weather; well done! Please note change of email for your parish clerk: berwicks@btinternet.com
Some dates and ideas for next year.
At the entertainments committee meeting on Thursday 24th
November, a good number of ideas were put forward for events
next year. These events will be confirmed in the next edition of the
Forncett Flyer, but just to let you know what might be on the
calendar for next year:
Saturday, 4th February 2012, Playgroup quiz with chilli at the
Village Hall £6. Saturday, 25th February, Bingo at the Village Hall.
Saturday, 24th March Mr and Mrs. at the Village Hall (we hope to
have Bob McClenning for this.) Three times during the year,
playgroup will be having a cake stall at the beginning of each term,
and shortly after Easter it is hoped to have Brian Skinner again to
entertain in Forncett St Mary church. A cheese and wine somethingor-other is being talked about, and of course there is always the
fete. Plans for this will be made at the inaugural meeting of the
2012 fete committee, at a meeting in the Pelican Pub on Monday
5th December (this year!) at 7.30 pm, and new blood is always
welcome. Most years there have been around 80 volunteers, so the
amount of work you would be required to do is lessened every time
a new volunteer steps forward. Also, I think that the workers are
granted free refreshments on the day - but I could be wrong. Some
years it rains; some years it doesn't, but everyone has a smashing
time watching the children performing whilst eating burgers and ice
cream (but not together, obviously). Diggers & Dibblers should be
there selling their weeds-and-seeds and offering a crèche for heavy
bags (but not babies).
To add to next year’s fun, there will be an attempt to paint the
Village Hall outside, and rescue it from its rather dreary appearance.
Anyone who knows one end of a paintbrush from the other would
be more than welcome.

Forncett Archive
I have published some of my recent work on bakers and butchers in
my Archive Notes on our website (www.forncett.info/). I now am
compiling information about blacksmiths and wheelwrights; in fact I
have been hoping to get some information for the latter. It will
combine with work on the millers in the Forncetts.

Many years ago Hadrian Jeffs launched a newsletter entitled ‘Village
Voices’ that folded after a few editions. I am keen to have these in
the Forncett Archive; if anyone can help please get in touch,
especially if you have No. 2.
An essential document for historical research are the tithing maps of
the parish. I have been offered the facility of photocopying such a
large map, but unfortunately my previous source is no longer
available. Does anybody know of a public-spirited person who has
access to such a map and would offer it to be copied for the
Forncett Archive?
Forncett St Edmund Church
Despite our inability to fill the posts of three officers and thus
constitute an official ‘Friends of St Edmund’s’ group, an ‘ad hoc’
group of enthusiastic folk has been meeting regularly to continue
the momentum created by the highly successful Summer Fete. The
members are not only planning for next summer but also
2 discussing ways to improve the church’s focus for the
Remembrance Sunday.
This year the Act of Remembrance was held at St. Peter’s War
Memorial and a short service was conducted by Rev. Andrew Good.
Because the village has two Memorials, for the first time in recent
years, wreaths were laid at both St. Peter’s and St. Mary’s on behalf
of the village. One wreath was sponsored by Forncett Parish
Council, and the other by a private donor as were the small crosses
which were laid on each of the three War Graves and a family grave
bearing a memorial to a son lost in WW1. It is hoped to continue
this practice in future years.
The names of all the Fallen from Forncett and also of Hapton were
recited by Graham Prior and Quinton Spratt respectively and the
poignant words “They Shall Not Grow Old ......” by Lt. Cmdr. Roy
Francis a Royal Naval Veteran of WW 11.
Lt. Cmdr. Francis also laid the wreaths. Previously this had been
done by Gladys Mower, an honour she had been proud to
undertake for many years. Unfortunately ill health now prevents her
from doing so. We wish her well. Jackie Scully, Forncett PCC

More ‘Approved’ advertisers
Hi Su, I used Peter Cooper for the first time last week following
recommendation from neighbour.
Only one way to describe 'excellent and efficient service!'. Also
reasonably priced. I called in the morning and spoke to his wife. He
got back to me early afternoon and arrived and fixed toilet by late
afternoon. He also checked my shower and next day, bought and
replaced the shower by lunchtime! He also solved the dodgy seal on
the shower door.
Having a shower is bliss now! No more worrying about sudden
changes of temperature, strange noises coming from the shower
and pools of water to mop up at the end! Plus the toilet is no
longer constantly refilling itself! Sally.

community at Forncett End. At the most recent meeting, plans for
the coming year were hatched to raise awareness of the target for
renovating/replacing the roof, installing a piped water supply,
arrangements for the fete (stalls, activities etc) and outline plans for
Diamond Jubilee celebrations next Spring.
Margaret reported on two highly successful fundraising events: the
St Edmund’s Supper, which made over £500, and the coffee
morning (‘It’s nearly Christmas’), which made £176. In addition
Margaret’s Christmas Cakes raised £110. She also announced that
funds raised over the past year for the Roof Fund had topped
£2,700 - a tremendous achievement! This has only been
accomplished by the generous support and interest of local people.
Although the signs are very positive, there is no doubt that more
volunteers would result in even greater progress and relieve the
workload on the few. Your offer of help would be most welcome.

Celebrations for the Diamond Jubilee
The ‘ad hoc’ group of the Friends of St Edmund’s Forncett End has
decided that they would like to organize and provide a focus for
celebrating the sixty year reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in
2012. The aim is to set up a community focus at Forncett St
Edmund Church with the help of as many children and grown-ups as
possible. There will be competitive games followed by children’s
teas.
The date being proposed is in mid-May, the time – afternoon. More
details will be published later, but offers of assistance will be
appreciated by Margaret or John (1953-788114)

School Report
As usual, it’s been a very busy time with much going on so I
have chosen two things to share with you all this month.
We have recently heard that we have qualified for the Food
for Life Partnership’s Bronze Award and are feeling very
excited and proud about receiving this acknowledgement for
all the work we have been doing in school. The aims of the
Food for Life Partnership are to transform school food, encourage healthy
eating and improve food awareness amongst children and young people.
To gain the award we have had to demonstrate that we are committed to
growing food in school, ensuring that the meals which are cooked for us are
made with fresh and local ingredients wherever possible, learning about
healthy eating, experiencing cooking in class and learning about where our
food comes from, which included making a farm visit last month and holding
a farmers’ market on the 2nd December in our school hall.
We still have lots of ideas for things we can do and will continue this work
into the spring term and beyond. The Food for Life Partnership have granted
us £100.00 towards our farm visit and another £115 towards the purchase of
a portable oven and hob so that we can increase the amount of cookery we
can offer our children. In the current economic climate it’s lovely to think
there are still odd sums of money available for us to use to benefit all our
children.
Tomorrow I shall be going to the Award ceremony at Swaffham’s Eco-Tech
Centre with two of our children. We will be accompanying three other cluster
schools who have also qualified for the award and would like to thank Long
Stratton High School for generously arranging transport for us all.
We have held our Anti-Bullying Awareness Week this week and been very
busy learning all about what bullying is, why it happens and what can and
must be done to eradicate it. The theme this year is verbal bullying and
name calling and the slogan we have been promoting is ‘Stop and think…
words can Hurt!’
The children have been exploring the saying ‘Sticks and stones may break my
bones but words will never hurt me’ and have used drama, philosophy and
debating sessions to unpick this idea. On Thursday they will be coming to
school in blue to show their support for a bullying-free community and on
Friday will be presenting a special assembly to parents on all they have
learned.
Since this is our last report before the festive season, the staff, governors and
children at Forncett Primary School would like to wish all our readers a Joyous
Christmas and Peaceful New Year!

We were very sorry to hear of the death of Norman Hawes
who died in hospital after a short illness. He and Nora had
lived in Forncett all their married life of 55 years and
brought up their family in Mill Road. We extend our
sympathy to Nora and family at this sad time, and trust
they have many happy memories to look back on.

In July this year St. Peter’s Church suffered a significant lead theft
from its roof. The thieves were never apprehended.
Since then, after much investigation by the PCC and
Churchwardens it was agreed that a ‘State of the art’ alarm should
be installed.
The system consists of sensors, alarms, recorded warnings and
Strobe lighting. Should the alarms be activated the emergency
security services will automatically be alerted and within minutes be
at the Church.
There are lead alternatives but these do not have the longevity of
lead neither are they as pleasing aesthetically.
We had hoped to update the heating in the St.Peter’s but to comply
with the Church Insurer’s conditions and to protect this beautiful
and ancient building for the community we have no choice but to
proceed with the security arrangements.
This is an expensive venture and if anyone would like to make a
contribution towards the cost involved, we would be most grateful.

paid for so we also had a fund-raising
Harvest Supper with entertainment by Gerry
Morris. What was surprising was that Gerry
also decided to become a waiter and helped
serve the food. Jokes (how liberal minded
are the ladies of the WI? he asked), songs,
instrumentals and anecdotes – he was the
all-rounder who made our evening
complete.
Next meeting is on 8th December when we
will have our Christmas party.

At our October meeting we had stalls
galore: a book stall, a trading stall; a large
fund-raising plant stall and one stall selling
goods direct from rural Turkey. How did that
particular one pitch up in Forncett you may
ask? Well, the goods were brought by our
speaker Jenny Gibbs who came to give us a
talk on her life in rural Turkey but who,
more specifically, explained how a 50 year
old woman still recovering from the end of
her marriage travelled alone to Turkey
unable to speak the language, with no
accommodation booked and no final
destination in mind and ended up finding
love and settling in a remote Turkish Village.
As she stood before us dressed in the
traditional costume of her adopted village
her natural ability as a storyteller, her
expressive features and her warm humour
held 31 members spellbound. We were
listening to a modern day Shirley Valentine.

Rainbows and Brownies
The Rainbows have had a busy time making paper aeroplanes, and witches on broomsticks.
The most important night was when four girls made their Promise to our Division
Commissioner, Mrs Tracey Betts. The Brownies have completed their First Aid badge and
are now busy working towards the Friends to Animals badge. We had a visit from a lady
with her rescue dog, and held a 'Pet Show'. Cuddly toys being entered in various classes.
Six Brownies have made their Promise this term. The Guides held a Hallowe'en Party
organised by the older girls working on their Baden-Powell Badge. The Seniors have
returned from their trip to India and they are now looking at the WAGGS 'Stop the Violence'
campaign. The Guides and Seniors are looking forward to their annual sleepover, followed
by their Christingle service on the 11th December in Bunwell Church at 4 p.m. to which you
are invited.

Parish Council, & Church Services
Present at the meeting on 17th November were
Councillors Beverley Humphreys, Jackie Bowers, Terry
Henderson, Brian Frith, Gillian Barnes, Mark Dixon,
David Peacock, County Councillor Beverley Spratt, clerk
Sarah Berwick and 2 members of the public. District Councillor Bob
McClenning sent his apologies.
One planning application was considered: Mill Grove Farm, Wacton
Road-proposed extension to existing agricultural building and
erection of agricultural plant storage building: Councillors agreed
that this application should be recommended for approval and
councillors commented that businesses in Forncett should be
encouraged.
Report on the Future Role of Small Schools in Norfolk Meeting:
Brian and the clerk attended this meeting at Long Stratton High
School. The meeting was attended mostly by head teachers and
was a general ‘talking shop’ regarding small schools in Norfolk.
The clerk has been asked for a few more bits of information from
the Department of Communities and Local Government before they
will make a decision whether we can remove the Statutory
Allotments outside the village hall.
There have been two crimes recorded during October; a theft from
a locked shed of some copper pipe and a male reported being
assaulted by a taxi driver on Low Road.
The next meeting is on 15th December 2011 at 7.30pm in the
village hall, everyone welcome!

particularly all those who came along to buy the items.
The sum of £400 was raised for Church Funds.
Our next event will be the Carol Service on Sunday 18th December
at 6.30 pm, a warm welcome to all.
Remembrance Sunday Service started with a short service at
Forncett St Peter Church War Memorial and two minute silence led
by Mr. Clifford Davidson. Lots of people attended this, then all
proceeded to the Methodist Church for the full service continued by
Ethel Coleman
Mr. Davidson.
We had many visitors to welcome at our Autumn Fair, with a good
range of items to purchase – home-made cakes, mincemeat &
marmalade which were in great demand, lots of Christmas wrapping
paper, crackers and Christmas cards, and hand knitted gloves and
mittens (mostly made by one of our oldest ladies). A good range of
bric-a-brac, lots of super jigsaws and masses of books were on
offer. There was a very good raffle and tombola. Refreshments
were served by Barry and Giles

A reader from Wreningham has very kindly got in touch to say that she has a photo of Buttonhole Ted.
And here it is: Edward Sheldrake is seen at the far left of the photo in his fine, elegant outfit complete
with the buttonhole that made him famous. But what of the other people in this photograph? It was taken
in August 1914 at Hapton White Horse - otherwise known as ‘Hapton Hole’.

Craft Fair at Forncett St Mary church
All sorts of things were all on sale at
Forncett St Mary craft fair.
Refreshments were served and a great
time was had by all.
This
was
another
successful event held in
St. Mary’s Church, to
jointly raise funds for
St. Mary’s and St.Peter
‘s Churches.
The eleven craft tables
were stocked full of
high quality items to
tempt
the
many
visitors; beautiful gifts,
jewellery,
cards,
Christmas wreaths and
table
decorations,
original paintings and
cards, and fashion
accessories.
Homemade
cakes
were
particularly tempting
and
disappeared
rapidly, as did items
Paul Lanaway chats to Gail Goodyear about her crafts
from the tombola stall,
and with refreshments,
raised funds for the two churches. Framed cross stitch pictures crafted by Ann Warner, and
wooden dinosaur jigsaw puzzles crafted by Bill Hinkley were kindly given to raise funds. The
Christmas teddy was another donation which raised
£50. His name was Ozzie and that of his friend was
Paul. At the end of the afternoon over £645 was divided
between St. Mary’s and St Peter’s. Again thanks must
go to an army of willing helpers who donated items for
the tombola, spent a good day slaving over a hot stoves
baking such a wonderful array of cakes, and those who
looked after tables.
It is becoming more and more apparent that the
renovation of St Mary’s Church has created a valuable
community space within Forncett. More practical than
St. Peter’s and larger than the village hall, its close
proximity to the latter means events can also be shared

Curry and quiz night at the Village
Hall
Nothing gets in the way of a good quiz, not even the
damp, cold, dark nights of November; especially where
food is included. And what food it was! Pans of curry
ranging from pleasantly mild to unspeakably hot were
served out to 45 eager participants in the Village Hall
on Saturday 26th of November. £200 was raised, and
Pam Thurtle and her team won the quiz which was
entertainingly presented by the host and his wife. If
you missed this one, just like London busses there will
be another three along quite soon: look at the diary
dates on the front cover on 10th December; 28th
January and 4th February for proof of that!

Guess who’s coming to Forncett!!!
On 18th December from 2-4 pm there will be a chance for the young and the young at heart
age 3-12 yrs to see Santa Claus before his official rounds a week later. There will be a small
charge of £3 per visit payable on the day. While the children are playing with their new
presents the adults can enjoy a drink and a chat at the Tas Well. It is not a fundraising
event and we aim to provide good value for money. To help with planning we would like to
have advance warning of your child’s intention to attend; please fill in the slip below and
hand in to playgroup/school or hand to Emma Leeder/Tracy Land. You can also register your
interest (to save you cutting up your Forncett Flyer) by phoning 01953 789848.

On New Years Eve we will be holding our popular free gathering at the Tas Well, from 7.30 pm on December 31st.

and do a raffle with items that YOU bring on the night, so if you have anything that was duplicated at Christmas or
just do not like your Great Aunt’s hand-knitted hat and glove set then perhaps you could win something better or

Forncett Clangers come in from the cold
Last year the intrepid handbell ringers braved the freezing conditions of minus 6
degrees to raise about £370 for funds. Because of the severity of the cold, this year
they will be performing in daylight - most probably in Norwich. However they will be
appearing at :Forncett Methodist Church’s Carol concert on
Sunday 18th December at 6.30 pm, where there will be refreshments afterwards: the
collection will be for a children’s charity. This year’s full schedule of the Clangers

New Year’s Day walk
If you have never done this walk (or even part of it) you can't imagine what you
are missing. There are two starting points again this year, but as it’s a Sunday we
cannot make use of Forncett St Edmunds church, so you will be welcomed at the

to walkers venturing out from the ‘top of the hill’, as Greg Spencer puts it. This
exciting venue can be found at the bottom end of Tabernacle Lane, after the 30
mph limit runs out. I will put a sign up of some
sort. Walkers from ‘the bottom of the
hill’ (Forncett St. Peter and Mary) will forgather
at the Village Hall for their pre-walk
reinforcements and will leave there at 10 am
SHARP, as Pam Thurtle puts it!
At lunch time, soup and rolls (and possibly
other things) will be available at the Village Hall
as they were last year. I shall probably drive
round the route with a box of chocolates (if
anyone gives me any for Christmas) to hand
out to weary, foot-sore travellers.

DIGGERS & DIBBLERS have almost completed their bookings for
next years calendar, and would like to share it with you. Anyone
may come to club meetings whether a member or not: you will be
made very welcome. The annual subscription is currently £6 (takes
you up to July next year) after which it is set to rise. If you come as
a visitor, the charge for the talk is £2 and that also entitles you to a
cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit; also entry into our monthly raffle.

Any space for a recipe? I've been making this cake for a long time
and it’s superb - hope others might like to share it, Gabby.
Bunwell Village Screen is on the
second Friday of the month, every
month except July and August. The
next showing on Friday 9th December
is Mao’s Last Dancer (12a) true story of
a male ballet dancer. Then on 13th
January (!) is 'Mr Popper's Penguins'.
We haven't decided what will be on the
other dates as yet.
Banana & Raisin Loaf
225g self raising flour
1/2 tsp. salt
100g butter or margarine.
175g soft brown sugar
75g raisins
2 ripe bananas
1/2 tsp. vanilla essence
1 egg, beaten
3 tbls. milk
Grease 2 lb loaf tin, or line with paper case.
Prepare oven 160C, 325F, Gas Mark 3.
Place flour and salt in bowl, add marg (cut in pieces) and rub until
mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
Stir in sugar and raisins.
Mash bananas with fork , add vanilla essence.
Add to the mixture with beaten egg and milk and beat till well
mixed.
Turn into prepared tin and bake in preheated oven for about 50
mins (depending on oven).
Leave to cool in tin.
Can be served sliced with/without butter.
Either way - delicious !
