cover artist:
Cheryl O’Neil
Cover artist Cheryl O’Neil’s pastel
painting, “Maine Blues,” was inspired by photos she took on a trip
to coastal Maine, a favorite travel
destination and source of creative
inspiration for both Cheryl and
her husband, David.
Originally an acrylic and oil painter, Cheryl started her journey with
pastels by studying under NCE
instructor Cyrus Whittier. She
was instantly struck by the vibrant
palette and versatility afforded by this medium. The subjects of
Cheryl’s pantings range from landscapes and botanicals to still lifes
and animals. Her works exhibit painterly strokes, bold color, and a
strong sense of composition.
Maine is just one source of inspiration for Cheryl. She’s also inspired when setting up her easel on Martha’s Vineyard or Florida’s
Sanibel Island, as well as when she’s right here in Newton along
the shores of Crystal Lake. Her love of painting and travel has also
led her to Provence, where she painted with her teacher, Jeanne R.
Smith. She currently enjoys painting alongside fellow NCE cover
artist and dear friend, Ann Marie O’Dowd.
From a young age, Cheryl has understood the power of art as an
expressive tool. As a registered art therapist and certified art teacher, she has worked in the field of mental health and has taught art
to children and adults in Newton, where she lives with her husband. She is continually inspired by the creativity of her mother,
aunt, and niece, who are also artists.

notes
featured teacher:
Gary Tucker
I remember clearly the words of my art teacher in high
school: “Gary, if you really want to know more about this
activity of painting, you will need to teach it.” Ms. Fahs’
words didn’t return to me until many years later when I
was to teach a basic watercolor class for NCE. Admittedly, my decision to teach
art came from the lowest of motivation (I needed money). As soon as I signed
the contract I hesitated, unsure if I could stand in front of a class and present
something meaningful to them. I knew how to draw and paint by myself, but
how was I to teach this craft? But then I remembered Ms. Fahs’ words and was
compelled to try.
Week 1. A student announced, “I have zero
talent but I’ve wanted to learn to draw since
high school.” I had no response then, but have
thought about this over the past 15 years. I
know now that talent is not necessary to draw
or paint. All you need is time and humility—finding the time is the harder. So I give
homework each week. Despite initial raised
eyebrows and mumbled excuses, after the first
few weeks I was being asked “What is this
week’s homework?” The weekly homework
review has become one of the highlights of my
classes. The truth is that it is at home, when the
artist is drawing and painting by himself, that
the deepest learning takes place.
Week 4: “You know, the world looks new to me these days; I see color in the
shadows!” Who knew that learning to draw or paint would make the world appear a better place? We are training our eyes and brains to see more. Most of the
time in our day-to-day lives our seeing is of the practical kind (is that a banana
or a branch I am about to eat?); learning a visual art form puts us in tune with
our surroundings so we learn to enjoy the simple act of looking, and marveling.
Honestly I have learned more about painting and drawing through teaching than I did
during four years at art school. I am grateful to
Ms. Fahs for those words uttered long ago, to
NCE for opening a door for me, and of course
to my students who keep me coming through
that door.

Conscious Parenting
with Cindy Kaplan
(page 34)
What makes me most excited about my
new classes each term are the instructors
I meet during the programming/hiring
process. What I love most about Cindy is
her wisdom and sincerity. She truly cares
about parents becoming the best for their
kids. Cindy wants children to thrive and
teaches parents to support and guide their
kids in a calm, loving manner.
Abstract Painting
with Paola Page
(page 7)
Paola’s work is gorgeous! She’s very
knowledgeable about abstract painting
and wants to share her love of this art
form. She comes to us from the Museum
School at Tufts and hopes to get students
hooked on abstract art.
Science of Cooking
with Kimi Ceridon
(page 23)
Kimi is a chef and an MIT-trained engineer! I’m not a science person, but I love
her approach to cooking through the lens
of science. This fall, she’s offering a few
cooking classes as well as a cheese-tasting
class. Here’s the complete list:
Let it Rise; Browning without Burning; The
Almighty Egg;
Caramel, Taffy,
Brittle; Artisan
Cheese Tasting.

Stock Market Game
for Adults
with Peter Yaffe
(page 39)
Finally, adults can play too! With Brexit and
our upcoming elections, who knows what
our stock market will do? It’s a fascinating
time to try this out with an experienced
teacher, and hey, I want to see how adults do
versus kids.
Moby Dick
with Matthew Sisson
(page 47)
We haven’t had a
literature class in at
least six years, and
Matthew’s passion
about this book is
unbelievably compelling. If you’ve EVER thought you might want
to tackle this tome, he’s a fun and interesting
guy—he has a lot to say about the book,
Melville, and more. Where else would you
have a former steel fabricator/erector turned
poet teaching about Moby Dick?!
Lisa’s picks
ChesS
with many different instructors!
(page 51)
This is a really big deal—we
have Chess at every elementary
school this fall! Plus we have
two middle school chess classes and four
advanced chess classes. You’d think I’d
play myself by now. Not yet, but I’m getting the bug, just a bit. Chess is a world
unto itself, with its tight community in
Boston and beyond. Lots of kids want in,
and we’re giving them the chance.
Art Odyssey
with Cheryl O’Neil
(page 51)
I love our catalog cover art this term.
Every time I see a printout (which is
the stage we’re at as I write this), I find
a new detail I adore. What a way to see
a blueberry! But I digress… I’m excited
about this art class because the teacher is
our catalog cover artist. She’s full of ideas,
and maybe one of her students will be an
NCE cover artist too, some day...
ACROSS the Blue/
Red Divide
Hands-on Electronics
with Circuit Lab staff
with Maggie Herzig
(page 39)
(page 54)
It’s become more and more apparent to me
that as a community and as a country, we
need to learn how to talk to people we disagree with. Maggie is a pro at helping folks
do this with a very practical approach. I hope
this class inspires some interesting political
discussions.
I am often approached by new science
educators, but technology ones don’t
come along every day. When I met Jake,
the director of Circuit Lab, I liked him
right away. He’s been in science education for a long time, and he gets what
kids want to learn and how they learn.
This class teaches programming and
electronics in, as its names suggests, a
very hands-on way. I think the projects
are really cool and kids will love them.

intro to art
Cheryl O’Neil, Instructor
This class is for the easily intimidated. Adult
coloring books are all the rage now, and
we’re putting them to great use here. They
provide a perfect medium for an introduction to color theory and an exploration of
how various materials are used to achieve
desired effects in art. Our instructor will
provide an assortment of outlined illustrations, project samples, and lessons on
how to use each material you choose. You’ll
experiment with watercolor, colored pencils, felt tip markers, watercolor pencils,
and more, as you color under her guidance.
You’ll leave the class with finished artwork
and skills you can apply when you’re ready
to choose your own subject matter to draw
or paint. All levels welcome.
Note: A $10 materials fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Drawing, the most approachable form of
visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and
more. It is also satisfying and challenging
on its own. Through the practice of drawing
we learn to see the world around us—and
then interpret it. Our instructor will provide demonstrations and exercises in basic
design using line, contour, shape, texture,
composition, shadow and light. Each week
you’ll work from a different still life. In addition, there will be homework assignments
and weekly critiques. New and returning
students welcome.
Note: Bring a 9x12 sketchbook, kneaded eraser,
2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, and a pencil sharpener.
A $7 materials fee is payable to the instructor at
the first class.

Sargent’s Method of
Drawing for Beginners
Jack Neylan, Instructor
John Singer Sargent’s paintings are world-renowned for their technique and beauty.
However, during his lifetime as an artist
and teacher, Sargent spent much of his time
drawing. Sargent saw drawing not only as
a valid medium in its own right, but as the
fundamental medium for any artist. Learn
Sargent’s techniques for drawing in both
graphite and charcoal. You’ll begin with
recreating his drawings and then gradually
work towards creating your own work uti-
lizing his methods. The course will culminate in two live-model sessions.
Note: Bring graphite pencils, charcoal pencils,
and an 18x24 drawing pad to class. A $10-$20
model fee is payable to the instructor.

Cyrus Whittier, Instructor
Whether you work in fine detail or more
broadly, join us and learn about linear
strokes, cross-hatching, scumbling, feathering, and blending. There will be plenty of
demonstrations to guide you along the way
as you practice your technique on a wide
variety of subjects from flowers to metal
objects. Expect to progress from a restricted
palette to full color compositions, focusing
on how to identify and adjust the colors you
observe. All levels, new and returning students welcome.
Note: Bring a small box of medium grade vine
charcoal sticks, two General’s 2B medium charcoal pencils, a kneadable and a Pink Pearl eraser,
a chamois cloth, and a 14” x 17” pad of quality
charcoal paper to the first class.

Children’s Books
Pamela Levy, Instructor
Learn how to illustrate a story. Whether
you’re planning a career in the field or just
want to add pictures to your own book, you
can learn from a professional illustrator.
This class will take you through the process
of developing small ‘thumbnails’ through
more finished sketches which we will make
into a ‘dummy’ book. We’ll discuss pacing,
unity, character and book design, choices
of color palette, medium, and style. Bring
a completed story (need not be your own)
and a book or two that you admire to the
first class. Returning students are welcome
to continue their projects in the second 4
weeks of class. We’ll talk about navigating
the publishing market and how to make
submissions, and, if time allows, create a
finished sample illustration. Expect to do
work at home.

Chinese Brush Painting
Michelle Yu, Instructor
Colored pencils empower the artist to create
works that incorporate aspects of both drawing and painting. In this class, we will work
with simple still life set-ups to study key concepts for handling the medium in a relaxed,
non-competitive atmosphere. Basic drawing
skills are recommended but not required.
New and returning students welcome.
Chinese brush painting originated in China
thousands of years ago, earlier than the
Chinese invention of paper. The Ancient
Chinese painted with bamboo sheets, silk
cloth, and rice paper. Today, artists are
constantly adding to these time-tested techniques. Varying gradients of three items:
paper, ink and a brush, generate designs in
thousands of manners. Learn to paint peony, bamboo, lily and pine, birds, animals,
and landscape mountains. Through instructor demonstration and in-class participation, you will also learn how to manipulate
ink and watercolors in order to create wonderful visual effects and develop your own
style and interpretation of this beautiful
craft. All levels welcome.
Note: Bring a set of 36 Prismacolor Soft Lead
Colored Pencils, a hand-held sharpener, a Mars
Staedtler Plastic eraser, and a 9x12 pad of
Stonehenge white paper to the first session.

Abstract
Watercolor Painting
Jeanne Gugino, Instructor
Explore new directions in your art through
abstract painting— a process that’s challenging and rewarding. We’ll begin with a
discussion about abstraction in art—why
the release of creative flow is so important,
and how to free-up your painting when
you’re stuck. We’ll view art by early cultures
and artists—the driving forces behind this
movement—and through in-class demonstrations, you’ll learn watercolor painting
techniques such as wet-in-wet, pouring,
spattering, and more. We’ll review homework in class and you’ll learn positive ways
to critique art. Individual attention will be
provided. Beginning and experienced painters welcome.
Note: Bring your watercolor paints, brushes,
water containers (3), tape, board that’s larger
than your paper size (11x15 sheets or pads), and
watercolor paper: 140 lb, cold pressed. A $5 materials fee is payable to the instructor.

Intro to Acrylic Painting
Jack Neylan, Instructor
Many artists enjoy working with acrylics
for its advantages: it can be manipulated
for various visual results, acrylics are water-based (instead of solvents, which are
toxic), and they dry very fast—so it is easy
to learn quickly! Explore art in this medium
and learn how to paint with acrylics. We
will cover essential foundation skills such as
how to set up your palette, color mixing and
theory, and composition. Class work will
include a variety of painting projects including observational painting from still lifes,
photographs, and portraits.
Landscape Painting
Zhanna Cantor, Instructor
Impressionist Painting
Zhanna Cantor, Instructor
Learn to paint landscapes from imagination
and photographs of nature using acrylics
or oils. Improve your technique by learning
about perspective, color mixing, and value.
We’ll practice rendering trees, rocks, water,
and other elements of nature. Supportive
class critiques will be part of the process.
New and returning students welcome.
The Impressionist movement, which included artists such as Monet, Renoir, and
Pissaro, developed in France during the late
19th and early 20th centuries. The genre
is characterized by the way artists render
reflected light using small strokes of bold
color. Students will receive individualized
instruction to develop at their own pace.
New and returning students welcome.
Note: Bring a pencil; acrylic or oil paints (acrylic
is recommended for beginners); three or more flat
brushes (1/4”, 1/2”, and 1-1/2”); either acrylic
paper, canvas board, or stretched canvas; a pallet;
and a jar for water (for acrylic) or turpentine (for
oil paints). See online class listing for materials list.

Grantwriting 101
Hillel Bromberg, Instructor
You need funds for your nonprofit organization; foundations have money to give
away. The link between them is called a
“grant proposal,” and this lecture, taught
by an experienced grant writer, provides a
whirlwind tour of its parts and how to approach them. We’ll start with some broad
concepts: what is a proposal, what are its
elements, what is the writing process, and
how best to use your team. Then we will get
down to specifics, exploring each of the major sections of a typical proposal. We’ll also
discuss other elements of the submission
package like the letter of intent, budget, and
supplementary materials. You’ll come away
with ideas about how to approach funders
via grant proposals, what makes a proposal
readable and effective, what reviewers look
for, resources to use, and pitfalls to avoid,
and what it takes to be noticed by foundations. There will be time at the end of the
lecture for Q&A.

Introducing Yourself
or Your Business in
30 Seconds (or less)
Deb Elbaum, Instructor
Imagine that you have 30 seconds (or less!)
to explain what you do, what projects you
are passionate about, or what your business
is all about. Can you do it? If not, we’ll help
you learn to give an “elevator speech” with
ease and poise. It’s not just about the rehearsing, though we’ll cover that—we’ll go
over body language, word choice, getting
feedback, and above all else, how to grab
someone’s attention with a compelling and
interesting story. Be prepared to practice.
We’ll help you!
Match Your Career
to Your Personality:
Work Happy!
Ilene Rudman, Instructor
Believe it or not, some people actually enjoy
going to work! If you aren’t one of those people, or if you can’t decide what sort of work
would suit you best, this is the class for you.
We’ll use the Myers Briggs Type Indicator
(MBTI) to help you understand your innate
personality and identify a range of satisfying
career choices. We’ll explore how people get
energized, process information, make decisions, and conduct their lives. The MBTI is a
highly reliable instrument that has been used
for decades to help people make career and
other important life decisions.
Note: Bring $15 to the first class for the cost of

Angela Pitter, Instructor
Like it, love it, hate it, but you simply can’t
ignore it—social media is here to stay!
You’ve heard all the names–Facebook,

my business benefit? You’ll walk away with
an overview and comparison of the most
popular social sites including Facebook,
LinkedIn, Twitter, and Pinterest. We’ll go
over the basics for using each, how to incorporate them into your marketing/PR

Programming:
Start from Scratch
Gregory Baryza, Instructor
It’s now a given that our kids are ahead of
us with technology. But it’s not too late for
you to catch up, or at least to learn how it all
works. Scratch is a programming language
created at MIT to get folks started with
computer programming. If you’ve never
done any programming, this is a great way
to learn. The end result is a video game,
and the process is similar to with other
programming languages. You’ll explore simple animations, and then construct a basic
arcade game and embellish it. By the end
of class you’ll be well prepared to take on
future programming endeavors, and, better
yet, to engage in tech talk with your kids.

MS Excel: Macros,
VLOOKUP, & Pivot Tables
Michael Toon, Instructor
We’ll quickly review the basics, then expand
your knowledge by showing you how to
create charts and graphs, write equations
that include logical expressions, and use
those equations to create “what if ” scenarios. You’ll get plenty of hands-on experience,
with in-class projects and examples galore.
Expand your basic Excel skills to efficiently
organize, summarize, and interpret your
data. We’ll first explore macros, which record and save your steps, so you can “play
back” or repeat your commands later. You’ll
then learn about VLOOKUP (vertical
lookup) to find a value in a list or table,
similar to looking up a person’s name in a

Learn how to buy and sell effectively on
eBay, the world’s largest online auction.
Taught by a former eBay Powerseller, this
workshop will teach you about searching
for and buying items, researching sold items
and item prices, and bidding. The focus will
be selling—how to create and submit listings and photos, determine auction timing,
handle payments, deal with non-responsive
buyers, maintain secure transactions, give
feedback, and build your reputation as a
reliable seller. Class will consist of lecture,
demonstration, and discussion. We’ll also

as works of art themselves. Once you learn
the process, you can easily do it on your
own. In class we will cover the use of different papers and fabric, tips and tricks for better results, ideas for making your own tools,
and even provide a recipe to make your
own permanent Gelli plate at home. Gelli
plate printing is fun, easy, spontaneous, and

Kumihimo is an old Japanese braiding
technique that has traditionally been done
with a round loom that sits on the floor.
Today, the craft is done using a small foam
disc with a hole in the middle to make the
braiding faster and easier. The popular
“friendship” bracelets are often made using
this technique. You’ll learn basic kumihimo
tying moves and make several bracelets with
lovely beads added to braided strands of
fiber resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces that

Quilting by Machine
Susan Rae Downs, Instructor
Quilting combines techniques from centuries past plus new ideas, materials, and
designs to create layered fabrics for walls,
beds, tables, and more. Quilting by machine allows you to show off these beautiful
patterns and intricate compositions much
faster than sewing by hand. With instructor
guidance and in-class exercises, you’ll learn
to sew traditional block patterns as well as
modern simplistic designs. You’ll also get
tips on different techniques and styles for
blending and matching colors and fabrics of
various patterns. Choose a project supplied
by the instructor, or bring your own ideas:
baby quilts, table runners, or place mats for
less-experienced quilters, and larger projects
if you’re more experienced. Rulers, cutting
mats, and rolling blades provided. This class
is for experienced sewers. New and returning students welcome.
Note: Bring your own sewing machine, with its
manual and accessories to class, including a seam
ripper, small scissors, good cotton thread, bobbins
that fit your machine, and machine needles (sizes

BollyX:
The Bollywood Workout
Lakshmi Karthick, Instructor
Once you’ve learned the fundamentals of
cabinetmaking and woodworking, you
can build almost anything. You’ll learn the
proper use of both hand and power tools,
safety precautions, and how to navigate in
a woodworking environment. Beginning
students will learn the basics by fabricating
a modest project, such as a bookshelf, coffee
table, cutting board, or Adirondack chair—
the project, which will vary from term to
term, will be decided on by the group with
instructor guidance. Returning students
will build off the acquired skills and work
towards independence as they progress
through the program.
BollyX is a dance-fitness program for both
men and women, inspired by Bollywood,
the film industry of India. It combines dynamic choreography and intensive workouts
with the hottest music from around the
world in a 50-minute cardio workout. Its
high- and low-intensity dance sequences get
you moving, sweating, and, most importantly, motivated. This unique workout not only
tones your entire body but also burns serious calories. No prior dance experience is
required—just bring a positive attitude and
the desire to unleash your inner swagger.
Note: You supply the wood for your project. A
materials list will be discussed in the first class.
Emphasis will be on safe and proper use of all
carpentry tools for new and returning students.

Before refrigeration and canning, fermentation was the only way to preserve vegetables.
Fermented foods have been a part of a traditional diet for hundreds of years; fermenting
allows fruits’ and vegetables’ natural bacteria
to grow and prosper by creating an anaerobic environment. In these conditions, good
bacteria multiply and when consumed,
provide your body with a wonderful source
of healthy bacteria. Learn how to ferment
vegetables, the health benefits, and why this
process is exploding in popularity! We’ll

bread. This dough can also be used for pizza
crust, dinner rolls, cinnamon buns, and
more. In the second class, you’ll learn to
make jams and jellies using an old French
method. These jams are pectin-free and
produce softer but intensely flavorful jams
that let the fruit take center stage. We’ll
prepare up to two varieties (depending on
what’s in season) and preserve them using a
water bath canner. You’ll learn several ways
for assessing the gelling point, as well as the
basics of water bath processing. Expect to go
home with jam, information to make your
own delicious jams and jellies, and recipes
to get you started.

Science of Cooking CLASSES
New
The Almighty Egg
Kim Ceridon, Instructor
Eggs are nature’s most versatile ingredient.
Packed with protein and nutrients, they are
a staple on the breakfast plate. But inside
those delicate calcium shells is a scientific
wonder that makes so many things we eat
taste great. The unique molecular structure
of eggs binds cakes while making them
moist; when whipped, they knit themselves
into a network that can coax water and oil
into coexisting or absorb air to bring dishes
to new heights. We’ll investigate the power
of eggs through three all-star recipes—
Caesar dressing, vegetable-loaded quiche,
and decadent crème brulee or catalan—enjoying the familiar delicious flavors, and
examining the science that makes each
recipe work.

Browning
without Burning
Kim Ceridon, Instructor
Caramel, Taffy, Brittle
Kim Ceridon, Instructor
How do you get that perfect golden
color without burning? It’s all in the
science! A reaction between amino acids
and reducing sugars at elevated temperatures causes browning. It’s known
as the “Maillard Reaction,” and it not
only makes food brown, but also causes
the release of compounds that enhance
flavor and send delicious aromas into
the air. Thus a seared steak browns and
releases inviting smells into your kitchen, and ordinary bread can be turned
into toast. Learn all about the science of
browning while making a three-course
meal featuring a sweet and nutty French
Onion Soup, Toasted Grain Pilaf Bowls
with Roasted Vegetables, and Brown
Butter Cookies.
Sugar brings much more than just
sweetness to our lives. From tender
fudge to chewy taffy to brittle lollipops,
sugar is the culinary chameleon in the
foundation of our most beloved confections. Its shape-shifting properties are
coaxed by the application of heat. At low
temperatures, it dissolves into liquid to
make syrup. Add some heat and it progresses through the candy stages from
thread to hard crack. Add just a little too
much heat and it burns into a pure, carbon charcoal. Learn what’s happening
at a molecular level in the candy stages.
We’ll observe the stages in our kitchen
lab, making salted caramels, vanilla
almond nougat, lemony taffy, and chocolate covered toffee.

Let it Rise
Kim Ceridon, Instructor
Why are baked goods so irresistible? Believe
it or not, it’s the leaveners. Leaveners help
soufflés and meringues reach new heights.
A loaf of bread rises with pockets of air
wrapped in a web of baked dough, thanks
to the magic of leaveners. In this hands-on
class, you’ll learn the science behind three
of the most common leaveners: yeast,
sodium bicarbonate, and mechanically-incorporated air. We’ll test our knowledge
through three airy recipes: Hand Whipped
Popovers, pizzas on a baking soda crust
(very unlike your usual pizza!), and individual Yeasted Sugar Cakes.

The Indian Spice Box
Shruti Mehta, Instructor
A South Indian Affair
Shruti Mehta, Instructor
Cooking Indian food can be both exciting
and intimidating at the same time. With
its array of exotic spices and herbs and
unfamiliar dishes, even a simple dish can
look daunting. This course aims to solve the
mystery behind the cuisine. You’ll be introduced to a variety of spices and grains like
cumin, coriander, turmeric, and ginger, to
name a few. Every spice works in conjunction with other spices. As a result the dish
can be sweet, sour, hot, and spicy all at once.
We will prepare a delicious Indian dinner
incorporating a variety of ingredients and
techniques to create a world of taste.
Southern India is known to the world for its
coastal beauty, IT industries, and classical
Indian dancing. The food of south India,
however, though quite popular in India,
remains a secret to the world. Unlike the
cuisine of the north, south Indian cuisine
is distinguished by a greater emphasis on
rice as the staple grain, the liberal use of
coconut and curry leaves and coconut oil.
South Indian cooking is even more vegetarian-friendly than north Indian, and uses
simpler ingredients. Come explore this cuisine and learn to make all new recipes like
Oat Adaii (rice and mixed lentil crepes with
oatmeal), accompanied by peanut chutney
and a spicy tomato and lentil broth, Rasam.
Other possible dishes may include tomato
rice, Moru (salted yogurt Lassi, south Indian
style) and a popular dessert called Kesari
(cream of wheat halwa).

High-Protein Vegan Meals
Lisa Kelly, Instructor
Everyone asks vegans: “Where do you get
your protein?” But actually some plantbased foods are surprisingly high in protein.
In this hands-on class, we’ll compare nutbased products and vegetables against their
animal-protein counterparts. It’s essential
that you get your protein every day, so our
recipes will include lots of it. We’ll make
spicy chickpea burgers, tempeh walnut
meatballs, a three-bean chili, and Mexican
and cranberry walnut quinoa salads; there
will be lots of sampling along the way. Good
news: vegan proteins are also much less
expensive than other types of protein, so all
of these meals will feed your family in a wallet-friendly way. Handouts provided.

The Fall is the best time to improve your
lawn. Everyone works in their yard in the
spring, but really autumn is the season to

root system before the stress of the summer
heat. Learn how to care for your lawn organically without chemicals or herbicides.
We’ll discuss why organic lawns have less

Traveler’s French
Lionel Claris, Instructor
French: Beyond Beginner
Phil Kaplan, Instructor
French is the official language—or one of
the official languages—of France, Belgium,
Canada, Haiti, Monaco, Switzerland, Tahiti,
and about 50 other countries and territories around the world. Approximately 190
million people speak French as a second
language. Traveler’s French will give you
confidence communicating for an upcoming trip—or just for fun. It will prepare you
to use simple, conversational French effectively. We’ll focus on developing speaking
and listening skills; we won’t spend much
time on formal grammar and there will be
little emphasis on reading and writing skills.
The French we learn is contemporary and,
when appropriate, colloquial. The course
will also explore key questions that come up
when exploring Francophone countries and
their unique cultures.
Improve your French. Gain exposure to the
language through conversation and in-class
written exercises. We’ll expand your vocabulary and introduce new verb tenses. You’ll
also learn about the culture as well as pronunciation and grammar. Emphasis will be
on useful, everyday words and phrases, including greetings, time, weather, travel, food
and more. English will be used only when
necessary. Prerequisite: our French: Beginner
class, or comparable experience.

the practice of integrating ‘nowness-awareness’ into daily life. Each session will include
sufficient Q&A time for participants to engage in conversation with Surya Das about

with a coworker, boss, friend, family member or client, and walked away feeling upset

This happens when people overstep boundaries. Establishing boundaries in your life is
a vital part of forming healthy relationships.
Conscious awareness of the relationship
and situation at hand isn’t always enough
to work through the problem. To really be
effective, boundaries need to be 100% intact
at the conscious, unconscious, body, and
soul levels of your being so you don’t end
up dragging unhealthy feelings around with
you. In this much-needed seminar, you will

Across the Red/Blue
Divide
Maggie Herzig, Instructor
The Gift of Comforting:
Compassion in Action
Val Walker, Instructor
This election season, many people have at
least one important relationship that has
been either frayed by divisive conversations
about political differences or constrained
due to fear of divisiveness. What alternatives are there? You can let media pundits
and campaign strategists paint a picture
of polarization as inevitable and hopeless.
Or you can consider taking a collaborative
journey with someone who is important
to you, neither paralyzed with fear of the
rough waters, nor unprepared for predictable strong currents. In this experiential and
interactive workshop, you’ll see how the
lessons learned by dialogue facilitators at the
Public Conversations Project over a quarter
century can be applied not only in group
settings with a designated facilitator but
also between two people who want to speak
about their hopes and concerns in ways that
can be heard, and to hear about each others’
hopes and concerns with new empathy
and understanding—even if they continue
to disagree.
Though we may feel compassion and understanding for someone in distress, the skills
of what to say or do can sometimes elude
us. We’ll examine how to put compassion
into action with practical examples of comforting at work and at home. To add to our
skills, we’ll explore recent research on empathy, grief, and social support, and review
the best practices for how to help. We’ll also
learn how to make realistic commitments
to people in need of our comfort, as well as
how to set boundaries around our availability. To conclude, we’ll reflect on the ways we
restore comfort to ourselves. This workshop
is ideal for anyone reaching out to others
who are grieving, as well as for caregivers
and professionals supporting people with
chronic illness, disabilities or aging.

... you plan in advance; you understand the

families who plan in advance—ideally

teach you the concepts and strategies that
will help you maximize your financial aid by
understanding the process, and how implementing strategies may increase a family’s
eligibility even if you have a “high income”
or own a business. The greatest amount
of financial aid goes to the families who

Procrastination equals less financial aid.
All schools are not alike, so it is important

What difference will it make if you wait and

convention and, with Mozart, to create a
new theater form without precedent. When
The Marriage of Figaro was first presented in
Vienna, it caused a great stir. Never before
had contemporary people with contemporary problems been treated in opera.
Following Figaro came Don Giovanni and
finally, Cosi fan Tutte. Join us as we explore
the lives of these two unusual people and
the still mind-bending works they created.
No previous knowledge of opera needed.

An Evening
with Beethoven
Richard Knisely, Instructor
Beethoven is widely considered one of the
greatest composers who ever lived. His fifth
and ninth Symphonies, the “Apassionata”
Sonata, and his violin and piano concertos are some of the most-performed and
best-loved classical music. But these giant
canvases of sound are created from the
most minute strokes. Join us for an evening
of revelation as long-time classical radio
host Richard Knisely guides you into the
microcosmic world of this musical master.
Learn to hear how these huge creations are
made from tiny cells of ideas, cells that grow
and transmute, and are inverted to create
great pyramids from small stones. In this
class, we’ll unravel the “Ghost” Trio, one of
Beethoven’s most beloved chamber pieces.

Genre Writing
Rachel Zakuta, Instructor
Learn to write a fast-paced, exciting story in
the genre of your choice: mystery, suspense,
science fiction, or fantasy. We’ll discuss elements of fiction-writing that are common
to all these genres, such as structure, pacing,
characterization, description, and dialogue,
as well as issues unique to each genre. You’ll
read a few articles on genre-writing and
short stories by popular authors at home.
In class, we’ll dissect those stories and determine what techniques we want to try,
and what we don’t enjoy. In class writing
exercises will help prepare you to write your
own story. In order to guide revisions, we’ll
critique stories by participants in a supportive and constructive environment.

Writing a Memoir
Judith Poole, Instructor
The focus of memoir is on eliciting meaning, a theme, an emerging pattern, or a
noteworthy incident, from a section of one’s
life. The specificity of this focus sets it apart
from autobiography, which spans one’s entire lifetime. Autobiography requires greater
historical accuracy and follows a more
linear progression starting with early years.
We’ll identify important turning points,
and use them to launch our stories. Then
we’ll give thought to the audience we aim to
reach, and the impression we wish to leave
with our potential readers. You’ll read published memoirs of your choice and discuss
in class what qualities appealed to you (or
not!). The instructor will offer writing cues
to keep your pen moving, and all will be
encouraged (but not forced!) to read their
stories aloud in class.

Poetry Writing:

Tracy Marks, Instructor
“Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity,”
wrote poet Audre Lorde. Whether you are
a beginning or experienced poet, we’ll feed
your appreciation of poetry and inspire
your writing—in free verse and/or formal
rhymed verse. Although many writing suggestions will be provided, the kind of poetry
you write and subject matter will be entirely
your choice. Class sessions will consist of
mini-lectures on the elements and kinds of
poetry, discussion of the craft in exceptional
contemporary poems, creative exercises to
help you generate poems, and constructive,
supportive workshopping of your writing.
During the fall, our focus may include
narrative, self-portrait, persona poems and
haiku (based on the interest of the class)
and may involve poetry of place, memory,

NCE/NAA YOUTH BASKETBALL
NCE is happy to partner with the Newton Athletic Association (NAA), Newton’s
largest youth basketball program. Leagues are for players in grades 3–12; the
program is for all players regardless of ability or experience. (High school JV or
varsity players may not participate.) Boys are in the majority, but girls are welcome to
play in all leagues. A mandatory evaluation clinic is held in late October to assist in
creating balanced teams for all leagues. Practices are one night per week (Monday–
Thursday and possibly Sunday) beginning in November and running through early
March. Teams play 10 to 12 games on Saturdays and/or Sundays, depending on
their age/league—please check the website carefully to determine when your child
will generally have games. The number of games, when and where they are played,
and practice locations, may also vary by grade level. League information and online
registration will be available by September 6. See www.naabasketball.org for details.

We may occasionally take pictures of students in our classes for our use in promotional materials. Your enrollment in a class
indicates your approval for this.
If Newton public schools are closed due to
inclement weather, our classes that run in
school buildings are cancelled. Decisions
about off-site classes are made individually;
please check your class listing on our website. Classes cancelled due to weather will be

BEHAVIOR POLICY
GETTING TO CLASS
PICK-UP AFTER CLASS
It is our expectation that students in our
classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. Students are expected to be respectful
of their teachers and peers. Students must
use only materials designated for their NCE
class and use them appropriately. If your
child does not meet these expectations,
we will communicate with you to discuss
his or her behavior. If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not
improved, we will ask you to withdraw your
child from the class and no refund will be
given. If your child exhibits threatening
physical behavior towards others in the
class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given.
Kids at each school typically walk themselves
to our classes, but younger kids are sometimes escorted by their classroom teachers;
please check with your child’s school and/
or teacher. NCE teachers arrive when school
ends (12:30 on Tuesdays, and 3:00 on all
other days). On Tuesdays, kids eat lunch
between 12:30 and 12:45, and on other days
they usually have a snack (you must provide
your own lunches and snacks). Kids from all
schools are welcome at all our classes. School
secretaries are at their desks until 3:30 each
day and can buzz in kids arriving for NCE
classes from other schools.
At the end of class, our teachers will bring
all kids to the main entrance of the school
to be picked up by parents, guardians, or
after-school staff. Kids in grades K-2
must be signed out by an adult; kids in
grades 3-5 can dismiss themselves with written permission from a parent or guardian.
To give your permission, send an email to
staff@newtoncommunityed.org stating your
child’s name, grade, NCE class, and school.

Susanne!
Fortune was smiling on us the day Susanne Chan-Wong joined our
staff in May. If you’ve called our office in the last few months, you’ve
likely spoken to Susanne and she’s probably helped you out in some
way. Susanne is a former software engineer who tired of the tech life,
turned her attention to raising her two now-grown kids, went to work
at Cabot School as a long-term substitute, and then found us. She’s
quick as a whip and game to tackle any task. Go ahead: ask her a question, and you’ll see what we mean.
