In January 2014 we moved 27 rabbits, guinea pigs and For the first time since the opening of its Godmanchester Centre in 1987, Wood Green has started rehoming small animals from a new centre at the Bee Hive in Northampton. It’s an exciting new project which we are delighted to be involved in; here we take a look at the background and introduce you to some of the animals who will be making the Bee Hive their temporary home. Wood Green has been associated with the residents and communities of Northamptonshire for a number of years. Initially this was through the rehoming of animals and attendance at events, but more recently through visits to schools and other education establishments, working with community groups and social support organisations such as I have enjoyed learning with Wood Green at the Bee Sure Start, the Daylight Centre and the Hope Centre. Hive because Our Hands On team have been working with Northgate School I have met new Arts College since 2011. In 2013 we extended the support from six students to 13 taking part in a six week responsible pet ownership course – ‘All about animals!’ – at our Godmanchester chickens into brand new accommodation at the centre. These animals will be available for rehoming and we will be following the same rehoming procedure that is in place at our three main centres – visitors are welcome to come along on Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 3pm. The Charity will also run a small retail outlet from the site, which in the first instance will sell a range of animal food. In partnership with The Bee Hive, Wood Green hopes to Meet the animals Rusty and his gorgeous girlfriend Dusty are just two of the animals who will be living at the Bee Hive until a forever home can be found for them. They are a very friendly pair once they get to know you, and will need a home with spacious accommodation that they can run around in and explore. You can find out more about the welfare and accommodation needs of rabbits by turning to page 14, and can see more of our animals looking for homes on page 23, or by visiting our website: www.woodgreen.org.uk/rehome demonstrate how we can maximise the benefit of animals to people whilst at the same time managing very high levels of welfare and care for the animals that the charity is thoroughly committed to up holding. animals Centre. The students, aged between 16 and 19, worked with a variety of animals and learnt skills in handling, feeding, training and the health of companion animals. On completion of the course all students were entered into a level one independent living qualification relating to animal care and were all successful in gaining the accreditation – a huge boost to all involved! Wood Green has now entered a partnership with The Bee Hive, a new enlightened vocational centre for students with severe learning disabilities. The centre is an extension of the Northgate School Arts College in Northampton and has been designed by professionals in the field of special educational needs. Opening in September 2013, the centre offered 35 places to pupils aged 16 to 19. 8 www.woodgreen.org.uk | Donation Hotline 0844 875 0150 Wood Green | The Animals Charity 13 9 OLD FRIENDS Catching up with some of the pets who have left us to go to loving new homes... So pleased we adopted her, she’s just perfect! – Sharon & Carl Williamson Wood Green | The Animals Charity 11 Insuring your pet’s future One of the hardest things about working for Wood Green is seeing elderly pets brought in for rehoming. Many will have spent their entire lives with one family or person, and often it will be the death of their owner, or the owner moving into accommodation that does not allow animals, that forces the separation, which can be heartbreaking for both parties. Sadly, many of our older animals will not be rehomed as quickly In a time when we’re all trying to save money, cutting back on as their younger counterparts. Many families who come to outgoings – such as pet insurance – can seem like the obvious us looking for a pet are hoping for a younger animal who will thing to do. But how would you cope if your pet was involved grow up with their children; we also know that people are put in an accident, or developed an illness that you couldn’t afford off taking on an older animal who is more likely to have health to treat? Unfortunately we see many pets handed in to us for issues related to old age. this very reason, if the owner had taken out insurance then they may not have had to face the trauma of giving up a much-loved pet. how would you cope if your pet was involved in an accident, or developed an illne ss that you couldn’t afford to treat? At Wood Green we try to encourage the rehoming of an older pet by offering four weeks’ free pet insurance with Petplan As a charity we try and help as many for every cat, dog and rabbit that we rehome, regardless of people as we can, so to try and address this need and help its age and health (although existing health conditions may some responsible owners we set up the ‘Pet Support Kitty’. be excluded under the terms of your policy).
