Vibration vs velocity
For many years, I have written and believed
that high velocity destroys the accuracy of pellets.
I developed solid ideas that seemed to be based in
science and aerodynamics to explain why this was
so. After 18 years of writing and explaining this
phenomenon to my readers, I had developed a very
convincing argument.
There was just one problem: I may not have been
right. Velocity may not destroy accuracy as much as
vibration does.
Of all the airgun powerplants, the springpiston is the one that vibrates when it fires.
And the harder it works, the more it vibrates.
Coincidentally, the harder-working spring-piston
powerplants are also the more powerful ones that
develop the highest velocity. So, high velocity was
always associated with the guns that vibrated the
most.
In December 2011, I did an extensive test
of a spring-piston gun in which I was able to
independently control both the velocity and the
vibration of the gun. The rifle was a handmade

vibration-tuning
device called the
Harmonic Optimized Tuning System or HOTS.
The test was constructed to demonstrate
that pellets became inaccurate when they went
supersonic, but it failed to prove that. Instead, a
certain very light pellet was considerably more
accurate at 1,216 f.p.s. than it was at 772 f.p.s. when
shot from the same gun. That contradicted my
theory about high velocity destroying accuracy.
Because I had the HOTS available, I was able to
adjust the gun to vibrate optimally at every speed.
I adjusted it for the pellet going 1,216 f.p.s., and
the group that had been the largest shrank to half
its former size, making it the smallest of all. So,
vibration rather than velocity had determined how
accurate that particular spring-piston pellet gun
was.
But the Whiscombe is a unique air rifle. No other
spring-piston rifle can do what it does. I haven’t
had time to test if the effects of vibration can be
tuned on other airguns—at least not conclusively.
I’m testing an aftermarket vibration-tuning device
on another spring rifle; but as of this time, there
hasn’t been enough testing done. The results do
look promising, however.
More testing is needed before I can say for
certain that velocity does not affect accuracy. I’ll
need to test pellets in precharged rifles that don’t
vibrate as much as springers to get a better idea of
how higher velocity influences accuracy—if it does
at all. All I’m prepared to say at this time is that I
believe vibrations have a greater effect than velocity
on the accuracy of pellets.

The king of triggers
large sear contact surfaces. As these surfaces wear,
the characteristics of the trigger-pull will change.
These are the triggers that everyone warns should not
use moly grease. The BSF trigger comes to mind as a
standout in this characteristic.
In contrast, the Rekord uses multiple levers
to control the sear release. As a result, the release
may be made very light without compromising any
operational safety. A well-worn BSF rifle can fire by
itself, given enough time. A Rekord trigger should
never do that!

In the world of airgun triggers, one name stands
above all others—the Rekord. It’s been around for
over half a century, and—like the 1911 pistol—it’s
still the design that’s most often copied. It’s found
on many models of the Weihrauch air rifle, including

A Rekord trigger is unitized and housed in a
folded sheet metal box. It has a latch to catch and hold
a piston with a central rod and cannot be adapted
to pistons that catch on the periphery. Its safety is a
spring-loaded crossbolt that sets automatically when
the trigger is cocked. The act of cocking the trigger
moves a lever out of the way of the spring-loaded
safety button. Once the safety has moved, it must be
pushed back intentionally.
What makes a Rekord so good?
I’m sure new airgunners must wonder what all
the fuss is about. Why does everyone rave about a
Rekord? I would have to say it’s two things.
First, they’re two-stage triggers with crisp second
stages; second, they’re highly adjustable. Don’t think
that a Rekord is the lightest trigger on the market,
because it clearly isn’t. There are triggers on 10-meter
target rifles that release the sear with less than two
ounces of pressure. A properly adjusted Rekord
sporting model should go no lower than about one
pound. So why make all the fuss?
The fuss is because the Rekord comes on airguns
with power. Ten-meter guns shoot no faster than
about 650 f.p.s. on their best day. They’re pussycats
compared to the guns the Rekord must control!
The powerful Beeman R1, for example, has a coiled
mainspring that’s under 150+ pounds of compression
when the gun is cocked. Yet, the trigger can be set
to release the piston with very little effort, and do it
safely time after time...with repeatable results.

What a student of Weihrauch airguns soon
discovers is that the Rekord trigger can be used with
or without a safety. Several models of rifles have been
made both ways. Some, like the HW55 target models,
never had a safety; while others, like the HW80,
always had one. The trigger doesn’t need the safety to
function, so the parts can be left off the gun, though
that’s never recommended.
Purists can identify five different variations of
the Rekord. The two that stand apart are the one with
a safety—installed on sporting air rifle, and the other
that has no safety—found on target models. The first
variation is the one I’ll call the sporting trigger, for it’s
found on Weihrauch’s sporting guns.
How low can it go?
Behind the trigger blade is a long aluminum
screw that adjusts the pull weight by changing the
return-spring tension. It’s the single feature that most
people identify with a Rekord. Turn it in to increase
the tension and pull weight and out to decrease.
It’s possible to clip some coils off the return
spring so there’s no tension at all on the trigger. After
this is done when you pull the first stage, the trigger
blade never goes back to where it was. It just hangs
there...limp and moveable. Only by cocking the gun
again it can be reset. It’ll give a very light second-stage
release, but overall it’s an undesirable modification to
make. Instead, you’re better off with a lighter return
spring that always has some tension but doesn’t
add much to the trigger-pull weight. You get that
by removing the standard trigger return spring and
installing one made of thinner wire.

exactly what Weihrauch did when
they turned their sporting trigger
into a target trigger. The HW55 has
a Rekord with no safety and a very
light trigger-return spring. If the
pull is adjusted to the lower range—
say six ounces or less, then the
return spring places no tension on
the trigger blade. Once the trigger is
pulled to the end of stage one...but
the gun is not shot, the trigger blade
just flops around loose until the gun
fires.
Fine-tuning a Rekord
As easy as the Rekord is to
adjust, it’s not quite so simple to
tune. There are levels of lubrication
and tuning that can be done, each
of which makes the unit just a little
better and more special. Let’s take a
look at them now.

Trigger adjustment
The easiest thing you can
do to your Rekord is adjust the
trigger return-spring tension.
On the sporting trigger, this is
accomplished by simply turning the
adjustment screw located behind the
trigger blade. Turn it in to increase the tension and
therefore the trigger-pull; turn out to lighten the pull.
A hole in the triggerguard allows a narrow-bladed
screwdriver access to this screw, so the gun can
remain in the stock while the trigger is being adjusted.
Clean and lube
The next step would be a simple clean and lube.
For this and all procedures that follow, the trigger unit
has to be separated from the action. The first step is to
clean the trigger.
I’ve seen Rekords with all stages of factory
lubrication in them. That’s to say nothing about what
might be found on a trigger someone else has worked
on. The factory usually over-lubricates the trigger
with thin, general-purpose petroleum grease. It will
be found everywhere inside the trigger box, with no
particular spot being favored. Sometimes, there will
be just a general blob of grease in the box, as though
put there as an afterthought. Either way, the factory
grease must be removed for best performance.
The factory lubricates each airgun never knowing
how long it’ll be in-transit to the sales floor, in storage
or even where in the world it will wind up. They lube
for the worst case—and for everything else, they’ve
done too much.
You remove their grease and leave a tiny bit of
moly grease on the sear contact point. That point is
shown in the drawing, and you can see it when you
cock the trigger by pressing down on the back of the
long hook that grabs the rear of the piston rod. See
the drawing to see what it looks like when cocked.
You can also apply a small amount of lubricating oil
to each of the two bushings that pass through the side
of the trigger box. That’s all there is to this level of
lubrication.
Full-blown tune
For a full-blown tune up, the trigger must be

disassembled. All the bushings and pins must be
removed and the parts taken out of the trigger box.
Then, each part should be examined and all rough
edges and burrs removed. No stoning of the contact
surfaces is required because of the design of the
trigger. It works through levers and contact points
rather than sliding contact surfaces. Pay attention to
the adjustment and operation of each lever. The sear
contact area can be adjusted by screw 52a (shown
in the drawing on the part called the tongue), but it
usually doesn’t need anything. After cleaning and
smoothing the parts, this trigger should work as well
as it’s ever going to.
This is also the time when a tuner will modify the
trigger return spring and sometimes the trigger blade.
In the unlikely event that there’s any side play in the
parts, this is also the time when shims are introduced
to take up the slop. But that usually isn’t necessary
unless the trigger has a lot of use or has been modified
by someone before.
Troubleshooting
There are two problems Rekords can have. The
first is that someone has adjusted the sear contact
area so it’s too small, making the trigger unsafe. You
should be able to cock the trigger and not fire it by
jarring it. If you do this when it’s in the gun, make
sure there’s a pellet in the gun and that the muzzle is
always pointed in a safe direction. Remember to fire
the gun when you’re done if it doesn’t fire during the
test.
The other problem is that sometimes the safety
spring gets caught between the safety button and the
receiver, locking the safety. Use a plastic hammer to
tap it off safe when this happens. Dress both ends of
the safety spring to keep it from happening.
An airgunner has every right to be proud when
he owns a gun with a Rekord trigger. Some feel it’s the
best part of the airgun.
