He is the seventh head coach in Wilkes football history. During his tenure on the Wilkes’ sidelines, he has led the Colonels to seven post-season playoff berths. Over the past five seasons, Sheptock has led Wilkes to a 41-23 record, highlighted by an 11-1 record in 2006. In 2006 Sheptock was named the MAC and AFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year after leading Wilkes to an 11-1 record, a conference title, and a berth in the NCAA Division III Championship. The 2005 season saw Sheptock guide the squad to an overall record of 8-3 and a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs. For his efforts he was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year. The Colonels have also earned a berth in the ECAC Playoffs during two of the last six seasons, including a 31-7 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the 2002 South Atlantic title game. Wilkes also claimed an ECAC Southeast championship in 1999. Coming to Wilkes with former head coach Joe DeMelfi in 1990, Sheptock was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Colonels from 1992 to 1995. During his tenure as defensive coordinator, Sheptock turned the Colonels into one of the top defensive teams in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Under Sheptock, who is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and served as chairperson of the MAC Football Games Committee, the Colonels have had 109 players named to the All-MAC teams, including 65 first team selections. Sheptock has also coached 33 All-ECAC honorees, including two players of the year, and four All-Americans. 4 A graduate of Bloomsburg University with a degree in Business Administration/Accounting, Sheptock played linebacker under DeMelfi while a member of the Huskies football team. A member of the NCAA Division II Team of the Quarter Century (1973-97), Sheptock held school records for tackles in a career (537), single season (159) and single game (23), and career fumble recoveries (12). The four-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) first team pick helped Bloomsburg win the PSAC championship title and earn a berh in the NCAA Division II semifinals in 1985. Sheptock, a three-time All-American and AllEast honoree for the Huskies, was inducted into the Bloomsburg Sports Hall of Fame in October of 1997 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in July of 2007. Frank, his wife, Lisa, and daughters, Nicole and Kelly, reside in Berwick. Mike McCRee Assistant Head Coach Wide Receivers 10th Year McCree returns for his 10th season as assistant coach and will primarily work with the receivers this season. McCree was a standout linebacker for the Colonels during the early 1990s. A two-time MAC all-star, he was named the team’s Defensive Most Valuable Player in 1993 after helping Wilkes rank first in Division III in takeaways, and second in scoring defense. He spent the 1994 season as an assistant coach at Wilkes after receiving his degree in business administration from the university. He then moved on to Wyoming Seminary for three years. Prior to returning to the Colonels staff, McCree spent one year as an assistant coach at Tunkhannock High School. Will Luca Assistant Coach Offensive Coordinator 2nd Year Luca enters his second season on Sheptocks coaching staff as offensive coordinator. In his first season with the program, he guided the Wilkes offense to 288.5 yards a game and 4.5 yards per play. Two offensive players and three special teams performers were named all MAC under his guidance. Luca comes from the University of Albany where he coached the tight ends, running backs and outside linbebackers from 2005-2007. Prior to Albany he was at Moravian from 2003-05 where he was the offensive line coach. Moravian won the ECAC championship in 2004. Before Moravian he spent a semester at Kutztown as the assistant offensive line coach. Luca graduated from Kutztown with a Bachelor of Science in History. He resides with his wife Laura in Lehighton, Pa. 5 Marvin Clecidor Assistant Coach Secondary 1st Year Clecidor is in his first year with the Wilkes football staff and will work with the secondary. Prior to arriving in Wilkes-Barre, Clecidor was a two-time All-Patriot League performer at Lafayette after ranking third in the conference in passes defended and led the team with 10 pass break-ups. While with the Leopards, he started 28 games in three years and was named the team defensive back MVP as a junior as well as the Patriot League Player of the Week the same year. He collected a career-high eight tackles his senior year against Georgetown. Lon Hazlet Assistant Coach Quarterbacks 2nd Year Hazlet is in his second season with the Wilkes coaching staff after 13 years as a head coach at the high school level. After working with the wide receivers in his first year with the Colonels, he will oversee the quarterback position in 2009. He served as the head coach at Karns City High School from 1995-2000, reaching the PIAA state quarterfinals in 1997 and 1999 and was the coach of the year in 1997. In 2000, he became the head coach at Dubois High School for five seasons where his team was the co-conference champions in 2000 and 2001 and made the PIAA District 6/9 semifinals in 2001. Before coming to Wilkes, he was the head coach at Pittston Area High School from 2005-2008. Hazlet served as the head coach for Team Pennsylvania in the Down Under Bowl in Australia as well as the head coach of the North South All Stars in 1998. 6 Hal Hula Assistant Coach Secondary 2nd Year Hula, who will be working with the defensive backs once again this season, enters his second year with the Wilkes football program. In his first year with the Colonels he coached one all-conference performer. Hula comes to Wilkes-Barre after serving as the defensive coordinator at Buffalo High School in Missouri from 2005-2007. Prior to his stint in Missouri, he was the defensive backs coach at Marshall High School in Texas in 2004 and the graduate assistant coach at Evangel University in 2003. He played at Evangel, where he received his physical education degree in 2003. He was named the NAIA Defensive Back of the Year in 2000. Ryan Hess Assistant Coach Running Backs 2nd Year Hess is in his second season on Sheptock’s coaching staff and will work with the running backs. Before arriving in Wilkes-Barre, he served as a student assistant at Rowan University for three seasons working with the defensive backs as well as linebackers. While at Rowan, the Profs advanced to the national semi-final game and won back-to-back NJAC championships in 2006 and 2007. 7 Keith Klahold Strength Coach Assistant Special Teams 6th Year Klahold came to Wilkes University in August of 2003. His education includes a BS in athletic training from Slippery Rock University and a MS in human performance and injury prevention from California University of Pennsylvania. He holds certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist as well as the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Performance Enhancement Specialist. Prior to Wilkes University Klahold spent five years building and creating the Florida Atlantic University strength and conditioning program as the head strength and conditioning coach. An avid powerlifter, he has captured eight national powerlifting championships and three World Championship titles. He currently holds six World Records in powerlifting. Joseph Zabielski Assistant Coach Defensive Line 3rd Year Zabielski returns to the Wilkes coaching staff for his third season where he will work with the defensive linemen. Zabielski’s coaching career began at Old Forge High School where he served as an assistant coach. He also served as an assistant coach at Crestwood High School and spent nine seasons at Susquehanna High as the defensive coordinator. He was promoted to head coach at Susquehanna in 2002 and held that capacity until 2004. 8 2009 Outlook 9 Wilkes University head football coach Frank Sheptock has seen his Colonels go 4-6 the past two seasons, but believes he may have the depth and experience to work themselves back into MAC contention. The Colonels have 34 returning players which include nine starters on offense and six on defense. Not only does Wilkes have a strong nucleus on both sides of the ball, they are also returning nearly every coach from last season which means Sheptock’s system is already in place. “This is the second year we pretty much have everybody in place staff wise,” Sheptock said. “Last year we were replacing a lot of key positions, so this year we hope the experience carries over.” Back for the Colonels is quarterback Rob Johnson, who will be playing his final season at Wilkes. In his first year as a starter, Johnson completed 145-263 passes for 1,747 yards with 19 touchdowns. The Bridgewater, N.J. native ranked fourth in the league in passing yards per game and was second in touchdowns. Johnson will have Jordan D’Emilio and Gennaro Zangardi to throw to as D’Emilio caught 25 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns, while Zangardi caught 20 balls for 274 yards and three scores last year. “Both Jordan and Gennaro could be dynamic players for us this year,” Sheptock said. The Colonels also return of slew of running backs including sophomore Harry Reese, who led the team with 44.5 yards a game last year as well as Zachary Tivald, who led the team with 4.7 yards per carry. “It will be a very interesting camp in the backfield this year. We have a lot of returning guys who all have talent. They are a very hard working group,” said Sheptock. Perhaps most importantly, Sheptock will have all but one offensive lineman returning for Johnson and the rest of the backfield. “We are more solid on offense this year and we have more players with experience under fire. We lost some close games and we need to learn from those types of losses,” Sheptock said. The only holes Sheptock will have to fill are four-time all-MAC performer Josh George, who anchored the offensive line as well as wide receiver Jason Prushinski, who was third in the conference in receiving yards per game with 64.1 10 to go along with six touchdowns. Not only will the offense be solid this year, but the Colonels will also be counting on the services of sophomore kicker Chris Horn, who was one of the best in the conference last season. In his first collegiate season, Horn was a perfect 9-9 in field goals and 23-25 in extra points. He led the team with 50 points and three of his nine field goals were from 40 yards or further which included a career long of 47 yards. While the offense looks to pick up where it left off last season, the defense will rely on an experienced secondary led by Corey Gilroy and and Kevin Gerhart. “We have a lot of experience returning in the secondary. They developed into a very strong unit last year,” Sheptock said. Returning at defensive back is Gerhart, Gilroy and Darnell Corbin, who have been mainstays in the defensive backfield for numerous seasons. Gilroy is a three-year starter, while Corbin has started the last two seasons and served as team captain last year. The Defensive line will feature Chris Swinarski and Jimmy Moore, who combined for 14 sacks and 49 tackles last year. “We have a good nucleus on defense, we just need to find our depth,” Sheptock said. “Our main priority on defense is stopping the run. We had two games start to finish where we stopped the run and struggled in the other games. Not being able to stop the run is vastly different than what we are accustomed to,” Sheptock said. The Colonels will start the 2009 season with back-to-back home games against Muhlenberg and Montclair State on Sept. 5 and 12. They will head to Newport News, Va. on Sept. 26 to face Christopher Newport for their first road game, followed by an Oct. 3 date with Albright in Reading, Pa. Wilkes will also host Lebanon Valley on Oct. 10 as well as FDU-Florham and Widener on Oct. 24 and Nov. 7. “We are playing a lot of successful programs. We like the competition.
