2013-10 CommUUnique - Tapestry, a Unitarian Universalist
A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF TAPESTRY Vol.19, No. 10 Jim Semelroth, Ed. October 2013 "In order to create a meditative and reflective mood, please enter the sanctuary in silence if the Prelude music has begun." SEPT. 29— 29— 10:00 AM "A Chosen Life" David Salahi will examine questions of living an authentic life vs. a conventional life; of accepting society's values vs. consciously choosing our own values; and of living a passionate life vs. one of quiet desperation. David Salahi has been involved with Tapestry since 2000. He has served on the Board of Trustees, as a webmaster and currently serves on the Communication Committee. OCT 6 —10:00 AM “Holy Work” As we begin to explore the theme of vocation in October, this Sunday we focus on holy work. How can we find work that is meaningful and how can we find meaning in the work that we do? We will listen to what the Buddha’s eightfold path and Gandhi have to say about this modern American dilemma. The Rev. Kent Doss OCT 13 —10:00 AM “What’s in a Name” How will you let your unique light shine? What will you do with this one precious life? Each person comes into this world with unique challenges and gifts. This Sunday we explore those tasks that belong to us, because we are the only person who can do them. The Rev. Kent Doss OCT 20 —10:00 AM “This I Believe” In our continuing "This I Believe" series, Iris Anderson and Rob Balmuth will be our speakers and will share with us their beliefs, the principles that guide their lives, and a bit about what brought them to UUism. Iris is a fairly new member and has become active in social justice issues, plus has helped organize and coordinate our Sunday snacks. Rob is a long time member, a practicing attorney, a capable musician and has assisted us often by being an auctioneer at our service auctions, He has held house concerts and played special music for us on many occa- TAPESTRY, A UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CONGREGATION Vol. 19, No. 10 sions. You'll want to hear their stories. OCT 27 —10:00 AM “Multi Generational - Dia De Los Muertos” The Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico with gatherings to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. In this lively celebration of life, we will sing songs and tell stories for all ages to enjoy. Please bring a photograph or memento of your deceased loved one to add to the altar that we will build together. The Rev. Kent Doss October Worship Associate: Linda Yeargin Page 1 OCTOBER 2013 The Tapestry facility on Madero is rented Wednesday and Friday evenings and all day Saturday Sun Mon Tue 1 6 First Sunday Brunch, 2 Thu 3 Fri 4 Sat 5 Women’s Issue Book Group Dignity and Respect Rally, 11:00 AM 5:30 PM Blessing of the Animals, 4:00 PM 8 9 History Book Club, 6 PM Caring Committee, 4:30 Friends of OC Detainees Board Meeting, 7 PM Orientation, 7:00 PM 14 15 16 7 Peppinos, 11:15 13 Wed 10 17 11 12 18 19 Hazard Waste Collection Ladies Lunch Bunch, 11:30 Men’s Breakfast, 9 AM Coordinating Council Worship Comm. 6:30 Bridge, 6 PM 20 21 Madrigals through the Ages, 3:00 PM at Tapestry Fiction Book Club, 7 PM 27 28 1st UU tour. The fun holiday of Halloween can really bring out the best in our spirits. This link to our spirit is embedded in the roots of the holiday itself. “All Souls Day” or “Dia de los Muertos” is a celebration to remember those that have passed on to the spirit world. Of course, the holiday also has its roots in other rituals, such as the Celtic festival of Samhain, which comes from the Old Irish for "summer's end." It is a celebration of the changing of the seasons and a time to remember our loved ones. It is good, I think, to remember those who have touched our hearts, those that have helped form our spirit. I think of my father and my grandparents, my wife’s parents, and friends too. We have lost members of Tapestry over the past few years who helped enrich our lives and mold the spirit of this congregation. I hope that we can think of all of those who have made us who we are and honor them with our words and actions. As we celebrate with one another this All Hallows holiday, we can do some wonderful work together. We have the opportunity to raise funds for our Spirit Grant (isn’t that a fitting connection!) With the matching funds that we will earn, we can take steps towards fulfilling our Growth Plan, helping to meet the needs of our current congregation and those who will come after us. While we do this we can have fun too! We can partake in some tricks and treats as we join each other at Camp DeBenneville, meet at the park with our pets, or give time and talents at our service auction. We can help build the spirit of our congregation by being purposeful and positive in our interactions this month and all year long. We are connected and we hope to build our community in hope and in love. Chief Seattle taught us, “All things share the same breath – the beast, the tree, the man…the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports.” In the crisp fall air, may we link our spirits with those who have come before us and build a better and stronger Tapestry. Keith Tuominen MAJOR MERGER Major who? The Caring Committee is joining forces with the Hospitality coordinators to start a new tradition at Tapestry! We want to acknowledge and celebrate the birthdays of our congregants! To do this, we have decided to provide a birthday cake to honor everyone who has a birthday in each month on the third Sunday. We are asking any congregants who want to help out with the cost to support this new practice by donating the $20 that a cake costs and the hospitality coordinator, Jean Rosenberg, will order and pick up the cake. Each month we will have a poster up so all our birthday folks for that month can sign their names and give us all a chance to wish them Happy Birthday! Our new tradition will kick off in October, next month. The Caring Committee would love to have on hand a list of congregants who would be willing to provide some additional support to those who might need a ride or a meal now and then. Please contact Linda Yeargin at readhead45@cox.net if you would like to add your name to the list of sometime-helpers! Caring Committee Hospitality Committee TAPESTRY,AAUNITARIAN UNITARIANUNIVERSALIST UNIVERSALISTCONGREGATION CONGREGATION, No. 11 TAPESTRY, Vol.Vol. 19, 15, No. 10 Page 5 3 Page MINISTERIAL MUSINGS In several different conversations this month the topic of hospice care or end of life issues has come up. I figured this would be a good venue to share a few thoughts on the topic. Please be on the lookout for an adult RE class on the topic. In the next few months I hope to offer a short workshop on end of life issues. If you would like to help facilitate this three-session class please contact me and we can work on it together. Also, I want to broach the topic of hospice care with you. Hospice is a type of care focused on maintaining the comfort of terminally ill individuals. It can make a huge difference for those who are dying and the families around them. The concept of hospice has been evolving since the 11th century. Then, and for centuries thereafter, hospices were places of hospitality for the sick, wounded, or dying, as well as those for travelers and pilgrims. Today hospice care also involves assistance for patients’ families to help them cope with what is happening and provide care and support to keep the patient at home. Hospice is the only Medicare benefit that includes pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, twenty-four hour access to care and support for loved ones following a death. And Medicaid and most private insurance plans will cover it. Only a doctor can recommend hospice care. It is made available when death is likely to occur within six months. There are many different providers with a range of services, so I encourage you to ask around. Word of mouth is the most reliable source of information for this sort of thing. If you would be willing to share with me positive or negative experiences you have had with particular agencies, I would be glad to share that information with others when the right time comes. And of course I am always available to talk about whatever is on your heart. Sincerely, Rev. Kent WISDOM CIRCLES Wisdom Circles is a small-group ministry program based on the belief that each person’s story offers insight into truth. Sharing our unique ideas is a powerful way of building relationships, learning from one another, and deepening our UU faith. Small groups of seven to ten people will meet on a monthly basis. The discussion topics correspond with the monthly themes for Tapestry’s Sunday morning worship. One or two groups will begin in October with more beginning on a revolving basis as interested participants and leaders arise. Groups will meet for 12 months, and then be reorganized. While frank and personal sharing is expected, this is not intended to be a support group. If you have questions about what Wisdom Circles are or if they would be right for you, please contact Rev. Kent. If you are interested in participating please sign up with Meta, our office administrator by emailing admin@tapestryuu.org or calling (949) 581-0245. Please tell her your name, what days of the week you are usually available, and if you prefer daytime or evening meetings. The Board will be working on ways to further publicize the grant opportunity and raise the additional funds available for match. The Board voted in favor of exploring the possibility of hiring a ministerial intern. Phase two of the Tapestry Growth Plan includes the development of a teen program. A seminary student serving as our intern would be available to assist in this and other areas in need of enhancement. Bev Huff presented an Interim Reorganization Plan for the O.C. Detainees’ Visitation Program. The plan includes a leadership team to handle database management, pen pals, book collection, visitor support, external/ government relations and recruitment/orientation and media relations. Start Up meetings to help “Plan our Voyage” have been scheduled for Sept. 27 and Sept. 28. All are welcome to attend the Friday evening event on 9/27 to be held at Tapestry. The event on 9/28 will be a leadership planning event. The Board and Rev. Kent are in the process of forming the new Committee on Shared Ministry (CoSM). The Board voted in favor of a proposed increase in the Audio Visual team budget to include one additional A.V. assistant per month when necessary. The Board agreed to change its regular monthly meetings to the second Thursday of each month starting in September. Gary Glass TUNE UP THOSE PIPES Our new music director, Jesse Levesque, would like to extend an invitation to anyone interested to attend Tapestry Choir rehearsals. We would love to have you join us each week or ANY week to sing for healing (gets the endorphins going which promotes health and happiness!) and also expressing your beliefs in song. You do not have to know anything about singing or music in order to join. We need your voice! We are also working to create a children’s choir which will be singing at the children’s services. Please see Cheryl Kessler or Jesse Levesque for more information. This year’s theme is OktUUberfest! Wear your lederhosen and dirndl dresses if you have them. Tyrolean hats too! To offer a trip, a meal, an outing or other event or service for the auction, contact Marsha Medina: marshamedina@ymail.com When you email Marsha, include a brief description of your offering, a date (if a dinner, event or outing), how many bidders can bid, a starting bid amount, and the value of the offering. Was ist ein Service Auction? For new members, here’s the skinny: we hold a service auction twice per year. Generally, rather than offer “things,” we offer services and events. In the past, offerings have included: themed meals in a member’s home (an ethnic meal, a celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Christmas in July, an Alaskan meal, an African dinner, a Black and White dinner); tickets to sports events or plays; guitar lessons; hand-knitted sweaters or other hand-knitted or crocheted items; outings to museums, galleries or gardens; nature walks or outings on boats; rentals of condos or timeshares; pet sitting; childcare; food offerings (pies, cakes, cookies, spaghetti sauce, etc.); organizing and de-cluttering services; a meal plus game night; a meal plus showing of a movie; chocolate tasting; wine tasting; conversation salons; poetry readings with wine and cheese; swimming parties. If you have a special skill, craft, hobby or passion, think of a way to make it into an auction offering: think woodworking, beading, cooking, basketry, metal craft, bird watching, nature hikes – use your imagination. The bidding is fun and the more diverse the offerings, the more fun. And the food is always great as is the camaraderie. This year, German fare will be cooked up by our own chef Kathy Spahn. To pre-purchase tickets to the auction, contact Sue Dearing: sdearing@comline.com or see Sue after the service on Sunday(s).
