Dreamy Dresses:
An expression of passion
J
ulie Thomas' daughter thought her
mother waved a magic wand and
created a dreamy dress for a special occasion at school—out of virtually
nothing. At least that is what the daughter
thought, when she went to bed thinking
she didn't have a dress for her school's special event. But, Julie knew better. A seamstress for many years in Mexico, sewing
uniforms for school children, dresses for
special events, and clothing for the family,
Julie was not a newcomer to making something beautiful from almost nothing. Working magic with fabric is Julie's passion.
Today, Julie is helping customers put
patches on uniforms, sewing matching hol-

iday dresses for a young family, tailoring
and altering clothing for customers, and
laying out unique fabrics for holiday shoppers to mix and match for special party attire. She's smiling from ear-to-ear, and
says, “I love to come to my shop, and work
on my machines. It's comforting.”
A life-long pursuit of sewing has
brought Julie to Bishop's Main Street, and
a side-business as a Princess House (a direct-buy, housewares, and home décor
company) representative too. She's busy
placing patterns on fall-colored fabrics,
and searching for good deals on more holiday notions and prints. And, she adds,
her husband encouraged her to open the
shop, and try for her own successes in the
Dreamy Dresses business.

eri Jo Felkel's automotive repair and smogging business is
growing beyond her wildest expectations, and she's hap‐
pily smiling, saying she's "slammed" with work. Her
Bishop business, TJ's Firing Line, started 2 years ago, and "word of
mouth" is adding customers every week. Felkel likes her job, likes
working on Subarus, meeting new customers, and seeing the re‐
paired autos roll out of the shop with satisfied car owners. She's
been "learning the ropes" of the automotive repair and smogging
business, and says the laws and regulations (especially about smog
certificates) are ever‐changing.

neighbors for the advertising and
friendship we continue to receive.

A Little History on IMAH/Sierra Thrift Mall
Inyo‐Mono Association for the Handicapped (IMAH), a non‐profit
501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1972 by a group of concerned
parents and community members.
Since its inception IMAH has continued to take bold actions and has
overcome its struggle to survive. IMAH has become a concrete organ‐
ization providing solid programs and services that meet the needs of
the developmentally disabled adults who live in Inyo and Mono Coun‐
ties, In fact, IMAH is the only day program that serves this special pop‐
ulation in the two county area.
IMAH has many programs, it’s not just what you see here. While our
Thrift Store is our oldest running program, IMAH has come up with
many different and new programs in our 43 years of being open.
Workshop / Day Program
Program includes a host of components including independent liv‐
ing skills classes, work adjustment training, pre‐vocational training and
self‐advocacy training. We use the store as our training ground each
client works in the store and earns a pay check. Part of the day program
is recreational days. These days happen once a week on Thursday and
we go all over the community and even beyond.
Supported Living Services (SLS)
This program allows a client to live on their own in an apartment or
home of their choice. We provide support staff that helps in their every‐

day needs like shopping, cleaning, doctor appointments and many
other things. Our staff is there to support them and we provide as
much support as needed. Some Clients may need 24 hour support
while others only need an hour or two a day or a week.
Other opportunities include:
• Work Opportunities Program WOP
• Community Integration CIT
• Transportation
When you shop at IMAH or donate your gently used items you are
not just donating them to a thrift store, you are helping to enrich the
lives of our clients who are sometimes forgotten about in our society.
Each and every donation you donate or dollar you spend goes to help
one of our many programs here at IMAH.
Thank you for your support without you this wouldn’t be possible!

Happy Customers and Family Bring Smiles
Candice Kile: Chalfant Mercantile

T
he satisfaction of having customers happy” is what feeds Candice
Kile's smile, as she fixes home-styled menu items for the Chalfant
Mercantile, stocks the convenience store, takes care of propane customers, does the bookkeeping, and prepares the Merc's very popular weekend
dinner specials. She's had as many as three full-time jobs / businesses, and
that's not including her super-busy schedule with the kids (she's a hockey
mom), and family. “My whole family's in business,” she notes, so she comes by
her super-powers through experience, and lots of it.
As for the work-life balance, she “sets boundaries. Keeping time set aside
for family, and trying to make the most of my time while I'm working.” The
happy customers and appreciative community members remind her everyday
why she's in business, with her husband. She is also a volunteer firefighter (for
past three years) with the Chalfant Valley Fire Department, and she recently
helped out residents during the flooding in Chalfant.
The Merc and bar have a faithful following of neighbors and travelers, who
stop for pre-made breakfast burritos, or make a regular lunch-time and dinner
stop for the daily specials, pie, bread pudding, hot coffee, beer on tap, and good
company. Kile notes the Merc will expand in the spring, with an outside patio
area, live music, and local band members who will offer guitar sessions /
classes. The store also features handmade soaps, jewelry, and candy from
many local residents. It's a “really busy” place /cafe / store / gas stop, and she
serves up a mean prime rib or steak too!

Chris has a staff of twelve and nearly thirty years experience with the business.
She says “one aspect of running a store that might surprise people is that at any
given time I’m writing orders for products that won’t show up for at least a year or
more; choosing what our customers might want that far in advance, out of the myriad high quality offerings that are on the market, is a constant challenge.” Chris
travels at least four times a year to attend buying shows. She says an additional
challenge is the gender bias in the outdoor industry. “It’s slowly changing”, she says,
