With the Holidays over and into the new year our
class will be exploring our beautiful country
through our watercolor
paintings. This month we
are off to the Appalachian
Mountains
and this striking red barn,
complete with the local art
displayed high in the gables.
High noon sunlight is
casting strong colorful shadows on the weathered
siding. What a great barn to paint!! You will learn
about shadows and how to paint them. You will
also learn how to dry brush to create the
weathered wood look. You can paint a subdued
sky, or a very dramatic sky; a summer green or
multi-colored fall hillside behind the barn. You can
also draw your own barn. The choices are yours.
Beginners welcome, a template of this barn is
available to you. So grab your paints and brushes
and let’s leave the winter behind and warm things
up with the “Appalachian Barn”.
Remember, we always have a great time!
(Don’t forget your lunch)

The art making process is
creative. It can serve as a way
to explore your past and your
present experiences. Whether
you look at artwork as therapy
or just a way to have fun, it is a
powerful tool. You are never too
old. Discovery, stimulation and
finding new ways to relax are a
vital part of your being. Sign up
for a class and visit an arts and
craft store. It is time to get back
to those promises that you made
to yourself years ago. Someday
is here.

'grow old gracefully' -- and through her experience
shows us how to make the most of this time in our
lives; to avoid depression and to stay happy.
de Hennezel explores the secret of eternal youth
and provides us with the keys for a happy, free
and spirited old age. A must read, with a message
of happiness and wisdom for all ages. A wonderful
lesson that will inspire anyone who wants to age
without becoming old.

COMMUNITY AT THE OSHKOSH SENIORS CENTER
By Toni Anand, Friend’s Board Member
HANDS ON CLAY
Have the winter blues gotten to you yet? The Christmas holidays are but a thing of the past, and a
long winter is still ahead of us. This is the perfect time to consider a new endeavor.
A wonderful class is offered at the Seniors Center where you can create beautiful clay objects under the
teaching and leadership of Kathy Dittmer. Kathy is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh
and studied under a world renowned artist, the late Professor Dr. Paul Donhauser. Kathy is happy to
share her talents and gifts with us.
Once you decide to create a clay object, the first step is to roll out the porcelain clay. Note the word
porcelain. Only the finest clay is used. Once you have decided what you are going to make, you mold
your clay around the object, (a bowl, cup, plate, figure, etc.) to generate a replica of the
aforementioned object. You then fire your project at high temperatures within a kiln. The next step is
to sand your object smooth, apply glaze and fire it one more time. Voila!
I have given you a simplified version of the process. Each person in the class decides what they want to
make. I have seen beautiful porcelain objects such as boxes adorned with flowers, a table-top rocking
horse, vases, a turkey, ice cream dishes, and heart shaped dishes, a cake topper, and all porcelain!
Men and women alike are enjoying this class.
Before you know it, it will be Easter. Why, you have time to make a porcelain Easter Bunny, eggs, or a
beautiful candy dish!! Come and enjoy! Classes are held on Tuesdays from 1 pm to 3:15pm.

It is possible to improve quality of life at any age – it is the little things that matter. Programs that

Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center
Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center
Annual Report
2015 is in the books. The Friends advanced in some areas and took a few steps backwards in others. I am
proud to report that the Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center (FOSC) will once again make a substantial
financial contribution to the Oshkosh Seniors Center, City of Oshkosh. The target fundraising dollars were not
totally met, but will once again sustain the Oshkosh Seniors Center (OSC) for another year.
What is the definition of a “Friend”? A companion, comrade, confidant, someone to count on, always there for
you. We all have friends in our lives and these words or phrases fit them. But what is a “Friend” of the Oshkosh
Seniors Center? Over my 6-year tenure on the Friends Board, I have heard many definitions of it. I have heard
participants say, “I have never heard of this”, “I will not be a friend, I already pay my program fees”, “The City
runs the Center, I pay my taxes”. On the positive side, I see and hear very clearly that a great deal of
participants and NON-participants alike give and truly understand the greater meaning of the term “Friend”. A
Friend is someone that believes in the purpose, that doesn’t blindly stand by and expect something for nothing,
that sees, hears, feels and has an intuition of what the Center can do for adults 50 and older. Being a Friend is
more that just receiving the monthly newsletter, it’s the blood that runs through the veins of the OSC.
Each and every year we all receive our annual tax bill or if you are a renter you see it in your monthly rent. The
City of Oshkosh is charged with managing a very complex business; the City, and all of its services that we use
on a daily basis. There are mandatory essential services that receive 100% funding and there are departments
categorized as non-essential services. And yes, The Oshkosh Seniors Center is in that non-essential category.
In fact, the OSC is only City funded at approximately 50%. The City of Oshkosh Seniors Center must rely on
other resources to keep its doors open and programs running. The Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center, a
non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization was formed years ago for this precise purpose; to assist and help raise funds
to offset the less than 100% City funding. Over the years, Friends and very generous financial donors have had
a significant impact on the Oshkosh Seniors Center. This has happened through major capitol campaigns to
build and renovate the current buildings, to assisting in day-to-day operations and programing funded through
the Friends annual appeal. Thank you so very much!
There is confusion about the difference between OSC programs and FOSC fundraising events. Programs are
OSC managed and the curriculum is planned for specific participants. Fundraising Events are joint ventures
between OSC and FOSC. They are managed and planned by the FOSC for the sole purpose of raising money.
Staff and an army of volunteers run these events in the hopes that they will be a successful financial venture.
This is accomplished by regular Seniors Center participants, non traditional participants attending the events,
financial sponsors providing generous donations, raffles, silent auctions, etc. The Friends of the Oshkosh
Seniors Center Board is very proud to say 100% of fundraising efforts are returned to assist the OSC.
With the conclusion of 2015, another successful year for the Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center and my role
as FOSC Board President and Board Member end. I have served the FOSC for 2-terms covering 6-years. I
proudly served as President for 3 of those years with very dedicated teams of board members. As I step down,
I feel very confident that the Board will continue to move forward and accomplish the goal of supporting the
Oshkosh Seniors Center.
What is needed? We need YOU! Every year the annual appeal brings in new and returning Friends who all
serve as financial supporters. We have seen an 8% growth during my tenure and have increased our annual
contribution back to the Center by nearly 46%. In other words, a great deal of fundraising has occurred. We
have you to thank for that. The Center belongs to our community and it needs everyone’s support to keep it
going. If you are not an annual financial supporter, please become one. Please support the yearly FOSC
fundraising events, and think about Planned Giving to the Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center.
Respectfully,
Jeff Liethen
President, Friends of the Oshkosh Seniors Center
