Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard Upcoming Nutrition Workshops Spring and Summer 2016 To register for a workshop, sign up in the pantry or contact kayte@mhcfoodpantry.org, ph. 355-6843. Workshops are free and everyone is welcome. Those who don’t meet the guidelines for our food pantry can attend the workshop, with a suggested donation of $5 per person. The MHC Kitchen is located at 1100 W. Allen in Bloomington, Indiana. No registration required for the ongoing demos such as Fermentation Fridays and Kids Cook. Beans and Whole Grains Wednesday, February 17, 1-3pm Location: MHC Kitchen Join us for tasty, simple ideas for transforming these affordable staples into nutritious meals the whole family will enjoy. We’ll sample some satisfying recipes and cover the basics on how to work these nutritional powerhouses into your day-to-day cooking. Pizza Making with Muddy Fork Wednesday March 23, 1-3pm Location: MHC Kitchen Making your own pizza is easier than you think, and tons of fun for all ages. Homemade pizza is also cheaper, healthier and tastier than anything you’ll get from a box. In this hands-on workshop with Eric Schedler of Muddy Fork Bakery, you’ll learn all the steps involved in making your own delicious pizzas in your home oven, and how to make "pizza night" part of your regular routine. Good and Cheap Workshop: delicious, simple and affordable cooking Tuesday, April 26, 1-3 pm Join us as we explore tasty meal ideas found in Leanne Brown’s famous cookbook Good and Cheap. Her book features simple recipes and ideas for eating well on $4 per day, plus tips for smart shopping and stocking a pantry. Participants will receive a copy of the cookbook. Space is limited, so register early. Burritos on the Run Tuesday May 17th 6:30-9:30 Location: MHC Kitchen Looking for a delicious, grab-and-go meal you can make ahead and freeze? Hub Garden Coordinator, Kendra Brewer has developed a brilliant and flexible system for making a batch of burritos, wrapping them individually and freezing them. Grab one in the morning for a heat and eat lunch, or any meal on the go. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll go over the basics and make sure you leave with everything you need to know to customize “Kendra’s Way” to your own tastes and schedule. Kitchen Garden Economics, Thursday May 26, 1-3pm Starting a kitchen garden, is a great way to boost nutrition and culinary excitement, while saving you money at the grocery store. If you're longing to grow some food of your own, this workshop is for you. Join Stephanie Solomon and Kayte Young, from Mother Hubbard's Cupboard to learn some simple tips and techniques to get you started planning your own small garden. Then we'll whip up a garden-fresh dish to sample. Easy as Pie June 14 1-3pm Location: MHC Kitchen. Apple pie, peach pie, pumpkin pie, gorgeous galettes, and pocket pies—a mere sampling of the wonderful things you can make with piecrust. Crafting a piecrust that is both tender, and flaky can feel like a mysterious process. Even experienced cooks can be intimidated by piecrust. In this tasty workshop, we’ll discover how easy and fun pie making can be. Fruit based desserts can help add one more serving of fruit into the diet of even the pickiest eaters. Fruit and pastry are made for each other! In no time, you’ll be whipping up your own pie shells and dreaming up new combinations to nestle inside. Canning with the Hub July 20, 1-3pm Location: MHC Kitchen Learn everything you need to know to preserve the fresh, local harvest through hot water bath canning. Any fruits can be preserved with this method, along with acidified foods like pickles, salsa, ketchup and chutney. This is a hands-on workshop, and participants will can a product, and take home a sealed jar of food. Dehydration and Freezing August 23, 1-3pm Location: MHC Kitchen Drying and freezing are simple ways to preserve garden fresh and locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs. In this hands-on workshop we’ll talk about choosing the best methods for your household and the produce available, and share preparation tips for successful preservation through freezing and drying. Annual Canning Workshop with Purdue County Extension Thurs. August, 11, 6:30-9:30 Location: MHC, 1100 W. Allen. Learn about preserving fresh vegetables and fruits using hot water bath method and pressure canning. This informative, hands-on workshop covers all the basics for safe home canning, and sends you home with your own jar of canned food and the confidence to try canning on you own. This class is open to the public for a fee, with 10 spots reserved for MHC patrons and volunteers, free of charge. Ongoing Drop-in Cooking Demonstrations Join us in the pantry for drop-in demonstrations on cooking, food preservation, and money-saving ideas and recipes. No registration is required for the following regular demonstrations: Fermentation Friday Every Friday, 12-2 pm Domestic Diva, Barbara Lehr hosts drop-in demonstrations (no registration required) on how to make your own delicious, probiotic, fermented foods such as homemade yogurt, kim chi, sauerkraut, sourdough and refreshing beverages such as kefir "soda" and kombucha. Barbara will offer several quick demonstrations throughout the two-hour slot, including recipes, samples and starters for that week's featured ferment. Special health topics, such as “Bone Broth for Soups and Health” will be offered from time to time. Here's the schedule of topics for February-May: Kayte’s Kitchen Every Wednesday, 12-1:30 Nutrition Educator Kayte Young whips up simple, delicious dishes featuring seasonal produce and items available in the food pantry. In Kayte’s kitchen you’ll find tasty samples, easy to follow recipes and helpful tips. Kids Cook Every Tuesday and Thursday, 4:15-5pm This weekly drop-in session features hands-on cooking projects for kids of all ages, simple ideas and tips for healthy food choices, plus tasty samples. We explore kitchen science together, and take trips to the vegetable patch for gardento-table cooking and memorable lessons on where our food comes from. Kids can work in the kitchen while caregivers shop, or the whole family can join in!
