Hit balls with Flightscope measuring your clubs performance and comparing them with the Cobra class of '14. Mens Amateur May 17 & 18 Volunteer Crew Needed & Participation in the Event Sought Bob Smillie and his volunteer crew would like you to join them and make our annual Mens Amateur Tournament the best ever! Bob needs volunteers to help with ball spotting duties for all or part of the morning or afternoon rounds on either the Saturday or Sunday 17th and 18th. If you can manage some time, there are sign up sheets in the Pro Shop and Men's and Ladies Changing rooms. If you are competitive, then you should skip the volunteer duties and enter the event. Although we do attract a few good players from the island, the great majority of entrants are high handicap golfers who use their handicap to win great prizes and have a fun weekend. If you and your friends think that a weekend of great golf, food, beverages and prizes sounds like a plan, call in to the Pro Shop and get your self registered. If you prefer, complete the entry form found on our website (golfqualicum.ca) and mail in your entry. Fee is $150 Event Nights Mens and Ladies Nights Event nights start back up again in late April. By the time you read this our first Mens Night will be complete - Thank you Murray Tysowski and Aurora Roofing for your continued support in Sponsoring our opening Mens Night. Our Ladies Night Welcome Back event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6th with tee off at 5:30. It is sponsored by Dominion Lending Centres (Jody Henry) and Simon Holt Restaurant. Later, on the 27th May, Westrail Construction (thank you Lyle and Lisa) sponsors the 2nd Ladies Night of the year. Again tee off will be at 5:30, with teams encouraged to sign in early and play their way out to their starting holes. May's Mens Night is sponsored by Silverado Contractors (thank you Peter Classon) and takes place on Wednesday, May 14th. If you have never participated in one of our Men's or Ladies Nights it's first and foremost a relaxed, fun and social evening in which to share camaraderie, enjoy great golf and consume scrum-diddlyumptious food, with draw prizes to follow. Enter a team of four, or join teams, and play a fun scramble format, play for KP and Long Drive prizes if you're feeling competitive, or just enjoy the beautiful summer evenings. Please call the Pro Shop one week in advance to book your team. Mothers Day Special Guys - it's Mothers Day! Girls - it's Mothers Day! Girls - I know you have this under control. Guys - Here's a three step plan for success: Firstly, panic. Fret, chastise yourself. You promised yourself this year was going to be different, how can you fail her again? You're better than that. Secondly, forget the jewelry store, the shoe store, the bag store and the travel store. You know what she likes - so throw a new outfit together from the Pro Shop. Add a pair of golf shoes to it. A golf bag. Balls. A Monthly Impact Series of Lessons. Write a card. Think about what you write in the card. Think about the card you've selected. Purchase a different card. Re-write the card. Thirdly, pour yourself a long, cool beer. Congratulations, you made it through another one. That was some very nice work! Crocs Golf Shoes Buy Golf Crocs/Get Free Crocs We have Golf Crocs in the shop for the first time ever, and our feedback so far from our guinea pig customers is positive! Comfortable and lightweight is what we're hearing. We have guy and gals shoes as well as a gal-sandal. It rhymes if you practice it enough. We would like to give you a pair of original Crocs, Free of Charge when you purchase a pair of Golf Crocs. Look SNAPPY on the links this summer.... History of Qualicum Beach Video Dea Kern, one of Steven's favourite Members, (thank you for the Monday Baked Goods, Dea) sent us this short video, chronicling our golf course and the adjacent hotel that stood alongside it. It's a great little video of a very special little place. Golf Course YouTube Movie Putter Specials Up to 25% Off A selection of putters Each year our inventory of (new) putters get's demo'ed on our putting green and golf course. We have putters from PING, ODYSSEY and TAYLORMADE. With some convincing from you, bartering and negotiating in your finest hour, we will succumb and discount each putter from 10-25% off their original price, dependant upon your skills and the condition of the weapon. SunIce Shirts Special 25% OFF! Our SunIce Men's Shirts are on sale for the month of May at 25% off. The SunIce shirt collection is called Silver for good reason. Silver is at the core of their X-Static technology. Silver is recognized as one of the most natural and effective anti-microbial agents in the world. It has great thermo regulating, anti-odour and anti-static properties. X-Static XT2 incorporates pure silver in a synthetic fibre during extrusion process, (don't ask Steven what extrusion process means). Not nanotechnology (again don't ask) or a complex chemical formula, just silver. It is not a finish or treatment, but in every shirt, and will never wash out and last the lifetime of the shirt. If you enjoy moisture being wicked away from your body, and if you prefer paying 25% less, and if you like looking good for the ladies, then consider purchasing 2-3 SunIce shirts in May! Get A Grip! Free FootJoy Glove with installation of 12 or more grips! Throughout the Month of May we're running a promotion for those replacing their grips. Any customer replacing 12 or more grips will receive a FootJoy Glove Free of Charge. Our first Club Fitting sessions proved to be a huge success through April. We had golfers testing equipment against their own clubs, be it irons, hybrids, fairway woods or drivers. They tried different shafts, lofts, lie angles and lengths. Flightscope, with the help of Ross Mantell, your Head Professional, recorded all the Stats and guided the golfers in the correct direction for their game. In May, Ross will again be offering club fitting appointments. Join him on Saturday, May 3rd, 10th and 24th with appointments scheduled between 1:00 and 3:30pm. If you would like to book an appointment call the Pro Shop at 752.6312 Twilight Golf Evening Golf Like last year, we are offering some specials for those who enjoy golfing in the late afternoons. 1. Please call Thalassa at 594.1150 to reserve a table. Instruction Tip of the Month If you find chipping to be a challenge you are among many who feel the same. I often hear from golfers who are hitting behind the ball to duff it, and into the centre of the ball to roll it. The underlying problem I see on a daily basis is that golfers try to 'help' the ball in the air by swinging the club head up. They get both aforementioned results from this motion. Next time you've got a few minutes to practice, try to keep the handle moving towards the target, rather than up. Study the image above and notice the distance between right forearm and the end of the handle. Also notice the angle at the back of the instructors right wrist. Try to maintain this in to your finish position. Instead of watching the ball, look down and see if you can mimic these positions. In your stroke, allowing the knees to soften and move towards the target helps keep the club moving. Allowing your chest to rotate open towards the target also promotes this. Notice these good habits in each of the Tour Stars finish positions above. Tom Barrows Players Championship Pool Entries in before May 8th Tom Barrow won The Masters Pool, picking Bubba, Spieth, Kuchar and McIlroy among others. He pipped Wayne Hill for top prize, although Mr Overthe-Hill did have two winning sheets in the top ten. As winner, Tom will set up our Players Championship pool with our staff at the beginning of May. Come and grab a sheet (or five) and have your picks in before Thursday May 8th. The winner of each pool this year will set up the following months pool. Nice work, Mr Barrow! Sunday is Junior Day! Kids Classes from 10-1 Keana and Tyson Jeffs in their 'Golf Pose' Every Sunday morning, and technically early afternoon, (10am-1pm), Steven teaches kids how to play golf. He teaches them technique so they can actually enjoy the game - what a bizarre concept, enjoying golf! There are even occasions when he squeezes in a little etiquette knowledge, just when they are least expecting it. There are different ability and age groups. Four sessions costs $39. If you would like to register your little guy or girl call the Pro Shop or email Steven at golfinstruction@me.com. Fascinating Flightscope Facts Club Face Angle & Swing Path Two of the Twenty Four ball and club parameters measured by Flightscope are Club Face Angle and Swing Path. While we look at the other 22 pieces of data simultaneously, it always interests me to see what my students club face and swing path are doing at impact. In the images above and below, the clubface (yellow line) is facing 4.2 degrees to the left of target. My students swing path (orange line) is very slightly left of target at 1.1 degrees. Combined, the ball starts and finishes left of the target. This is, of course, only one swing. What we have noticed, and what you see on a regular basis, is that your 'miss' is often the same. When we capture that data we can change the process faster. There is no guessing. No assumptions. If you would like to improve your ball dispersion (see image below), book a lesson with Ross or Steven and tighten up your misses with improved technique. The image above is also extremely helpful to golfers trying to decide between clubs. Hit several different clubs, plus your own clubs, and see which club flies further and stays straighter and judge by the grouping displayed on this screen. See the clubfitting article above and book an appointment with Ross one Saturday in May. What's in the Bag? Steven's Set Over the next few issues we'll see what golf equipment our Pro Shop staff will be using in 2014. This month we'll begin with Steven's set.
