While most plant name constructions in the list are fairly straightforward, there are a few unusual ones that could benefit from an explanation. To get to that point, this summary covers the basics first. Use of serif or sans serif, bold or plain typeface applies to this handbook specifically and is not a prescriptive for plant names per se. Examples shown may not be in the sale. not widely used or incorrectly used, the fallback position is to simply Family Name – (italicized, use the un-capitalized generic Latinized, plain serif type, e.g. name. Buxaceae) The family name is the last Taxonomic Name - This is also information presented in the name called the botanical name. It is sometimes referred to as the “Latin section of the plant list. A family is defined by characteristics in name,” the “scientific name.” Its a unique combination, usually development began in eighteenth of flowers and fruits, which century Europe with the effort to provide a precise and unique name distinguish it from other families. Almost all family names are a for each living thing. Because combination of a genus name of its usefulness, taxonomy, this derived from the type genera found Latinized hierarchical naming classification system, has survived within that family and the ending – Common Name – (non-italicized, with some modification to this aceae. The latter means “belonging non- Latinized, plain serif type, to or having the nature of.” day. The plant sale names section non-capitalized except for proper includes only the last three taxa of The exceptions which contain a names) the seven major taxonomic levels, Latinized description rather than a A common name is common to an plus when it exists, the infraspecies generic name, were the first groups area, group of people or culture to be identified as families and subtaxa. Taxa listed by rank in but is not universal. Confusion were named prior to the current descending order are: results from the fact that some convention. Because of widespread common names are used for acceptance, they have been Kingdom many different plants and some retained. Division Species or Binomial Name – individual plants have a multitude Class (italicized, Latinized, bold sans serif of different names. However, Order type, the generic name is capitalized common names do have some Family while the specific epithet is not, e.g. usefulness in the trade when they Genus are combined with the taxonomic Specific Epithet Buxus sempervirens. The current name. Where a common name is Infraspecific species naming authority for all plants is the International Code of Epithet 11 Botanical Nomenclature. This code was established and is maintained by consensus of the international academic and scientific communities of interest and has no real enforceable legal standing. Many names are simply a basic binomial construction consisting of the generic name (first word and sometimes also called genus) and the specific epithet (second word). Together, these two words name the species. This would represent a species as commonly found in nature. Infraspecific Epithets – (italicized, Latinized, bold sans serif type, non-capitalized) Within species, there can be a variant group of plants that differ enough morphologically from the species to justify adding an infra-specific epithet. If this variant group occurs and naturally reproduces itself in the wild, it is frequently the result of interbreeding and geographical isolation. Technically, they are ranked in descending order of difference and termed a subspecies (subsp.), or a variety (var.). In both, the abbreviated labels are not italicized. Interestingly, as in the third example below, it’s possible A FEW NOTES ON NAMES AND DATA but rare for a plant to have a fourpart botanical name with two infraspecific epithets in addition to the binomial species name. Subspecies - (e.g. Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris) Variety - (e.g. Cornus florida var. urbiniana) Subspecies and Variety – (e.g. Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana var. alba) Cultivar – (non-italicized, nonLatinized, bold sans serif type, capitalized, contained within single quotation marks, e.g. Buxus sempervirens ‘Elegantissima’) The current naming authority for horticultural (ornamental) cultivars is the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants. As with the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, this code was established and is maintained by consensus of the international academic and scientific communities of interest and has no real enforceable legal standing. Cultivar names are 12 registered with an International or National Registration Authority, associated with a single or related group of plants, following the International Code. At some point in the life of a cultivated species, it may be determined that a plant in the species displays significantly unique characteristics and that this plant should be propagated as a cultivar. In a few very rare examples of cultivar propagation, seed is used. While not genetically identical, the offspring of this sexual propagation displays the same characteristics, can be considered generally coming true to the original plant and may use the cultivar name after a cultivar group. However, most cultivar propagation is asexual and results in new plants that are genetically identical to the original selected plant. Sometimes the plant identified as a cultivar is a variant of an infraspecies. An example is Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris ‘Skylands Giant’. All words in a cultivar epithet are written in the language of the person who described it and are not translated within the cultivar designation. The exceptions to universal capitalization are Japanese names rendered phonetically into a Roman alphabet and used as cultivar names. Nandina domestica [Obsession™]=’Seika’ illustrates this anomaly. Plant Patents (PP) and Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR) Anyone may propagate and sell a cultivar using the cultivar name without financial liability or obligation unless there is an active plant patent. Plant patents in this country are granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office to applicants describing a plant with characteristics not previously registered. A patent number rather than a name identifies the plant. Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Little Honey’ was discovered and cultivated by Briggs Nursery, a commercial breeder and grower. ‘Little Honey’ was patented through breeders’ agent PlantHaven, Inc. and has been granted a US Plant Patent, PP# 15,477. The patent number and the cultivar name are different since a cultivar name must be in a modern language, not a number code. In the European Union, an equivalent process is the granting of Plant Breeders’ Rights. There, the PBR name must be registered under the approved name, which is the cultivar name, e.g. Ajuga reptans BLACK SCALLOP =’Binblasca’(PBR). By default, the cultivar name, ’Binblasca’(PBR), becomes an intellectual property right or patent, identified in Europe, which is secured through the payment of fees covering the initial application and subsequent renewals. By law, the cultivar name must be on the label at point of sale. This particular plant has acquired a US Plant Patent number as well. Trade Names – (non-italicized, non-Latinized, bold sans serif type, capitalized, securing symbol suffix ™ or ®, contained within rectangular brackets, precedes cultivar name with “=”, e.g. Hydrangea macrophylla [CITYLINE®Rio] A FEW NOTES ON NAMES AND DATA =’Ragra’). In the US and other countries where permitted, growers who have acquired and registered a cultivar and who want to market it, may secure the commercial rights to a separate trade name associated with the plant through promotion. This may be easier and cheaper than securing a plant patent. than the cultivar name. Intergeneric Hybrid – (nonitalicized “x” symbol prefix in front of generic name, xHeucherella ‘Sweet Tea’ or xGordlinia grandiflora) These hybrids are the result of sexual propagation by merging reproductive material from two different genera. It can Acquiring the name rights is be created naturally or through done through a trademark or a human intervention. When a hybrid registration and can be granted only by a governing authority, such is produced between two different genera it is termed intergeneric. as the US Patent and Trademark Notice that the first example has Office. As is applicant to select a memorable commonly the practice, the new name for his marketing name and, generic name is a combination of for various reasons, a nonsen- sical the two original generic names. name for the cultivar name as the above example demonstrates. A user of themarketing name Interspecific Hybrid – (nonwill promote it to the point that italicized “x” symbol between the consumers will ask for it rather generic name and the new specific epithet, e.g. Abelia x grandiflora 13 [Pinky Bells™]=’Lynn’) When a hybrid is produced between two different plants from the same genus but with different specific epithets it is termed interspecific. When the origins of the original species’ subsets are confused, the hybrid designation recognized by the “x” symbol and a new species epithet may be dropped, as in Thuja ‘Green Giant’. PHS GOLD MEDAL PLANTS The Gold Medal Plant award program has been helping to steer home gardeners towards high quality garden plants since 1978. Each year, this Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) administered program awards Gold Medal status to 3-5 woody plants, chosen and evaluated for aesthetic appeal, performance, and hardiness within growing Zones 5-7. According to PHS, Gold Medal plants reliably “exhibit standards of excellence for pest and disease resistance, as well as ease of growing, when planted and maintained by recommended methods.” The same principles that guide the PHS Gold Medal award program are also reflected in the mission of the Scott Arboretum, in demonstrating to the average home gardener how to successfully and beautifully grow plants best suited to eastern Pennsylvania. As such, the Scott Arboretum is pleased to offer these Gold Medal selections in its upcoming Plant Sale. 2015 Plant Sale – Gold Medal Plants Acer griseum Aesculus parviflora Lindera glauca var. salicifolia Metasequoia glyptostroboides Aronia arbutifolia ‘Brilliantissima’ Parrotia persica Campsis grandiflora ‘Morning Calm’ Sarcococca hookeriana var. humilis [Fragrant Valley™]=’Sarsid 1’ Clematis ‘Betty Corning’ Clethra alnifolia ‘Tom’s Compact’ Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ Cryptomeria japonica ‘Yoshino’ Diervilla sessilifolia [Cool Splash®]=’LPDC Podaras’ Eleutherococcus sieboldianus ‘Variegatus’ 16 Thuja ‘Green Giant’ Viburnum nudum ‘Winterthur’ (List as of 7/21/15) WOODIES PLANT LIST AND DATA Abelia mosanensis fragrant abelia Zone: 5-9 Bloom Time: May-June Height x Spread: 4-6' x 4-6' Bloom Color: pink, white Acer griseum paperbark maple Zone: 4-8 Bloom Time: April Height x Spread: 20-30' x 15-25' Bloom Color: insignificant yellow-green Actinidia arguta (Male) May Height x Spread: 25-30' x 7-20' Bloom Color: white Actinidia arguta 'Ken's Red' hardy kiwi Zone: 3-8 Bloom Time: May 17 Features: Evergreen Native x Deer Resistant x Attracts Pollinators Soil: x Well Drained x Moist Dry Drought Tolerant.
