Lettuce Guide for Imperial & Yuma Iceberg Lettuce Acropolis is a sure-heading, hot season variety with remarkable uniformity and consistent performance; it produces large, dark green plant frames that provide good head protection; reliably makes flattened-round heads with a very smooth shape; large size and thick, crisp texture produces large round heads ensure high yields; very good internal quality due to its tipburn and bolting tolerance. (U.S. Patent with consistent size, has strong tip burn tolerance and strong germination. It is a good option for early 7,102,060) desert plantings. (U.S. Protected Variety / PVP No. 201000303) Caretaker Serengeti is intended for production in regions with mild winters. It is well adapted in the transition through tail-end slots of the desert season. Serengeti produces a uniform crop of vigorous plants with large, well-shaped heads that have great weight. Cannibal produces large round heads with good color and uniformity resulting in increased tonnage for processing or good for carton 18’s. is a consistent large heading variety Jeopardy is an early maturing sure- Pursuit with excellent dark green color. (U.S Protected Variety / PVP No. 200700031) EW Eagle NDesert Large cover and plant frame; larger, smoother heads with better weight; flattened to round shape; flat smooth butt, with smooth ribs; uniform to size, shape and maturity; medium core length (1-2” long); 4 to 5 days earlier to harvest than Midway, LT 4083 or Pinochle, Very uniform and consistent during the slot. Strong on internal tipburn and tolerant to bolting. (Provisional U.S. Patent Filed) Pinochle produces large heads with a large frame for extra head protection; is tolerant to Fusarium. Rome 59 is widely adapted for all Green Towers type planting slots. It is a multi use variety that can be used for romaine hearts, carton and salad plants. Oso Verde Oso Verde is a U.S. Green Leaf lettuce type that produces a large frame. Oso Verde has a medium green color with frilled leaf margins. It has excellent uniformity and a solid mid-rib giving it good weight. Gemberg Fenberg produces plants Red Oak Zorin is a Red Oak variety with good color and volume. Uniform plants with a short core. DMR I-VI. Red Oak Intrepid was selected for its potential as a red multi-leaf lettuce. Good volume, leaf color and slow to bolt. Strong mildew tolerance, DMR I-VIII. It’s a vigorous variety that produces leaves with a classic romaine shape. The leaves are medium green, they have a fresh appearance, good texture and mild flavor; DMR I-VIII. Green Romaine Carlsbad DMR I-VIII Carlsbad was derived from germplasm with extra thick texture; it is highly Bremia resistant and is ideal for baby leaf salads; it produces deep green colored leaves with excellent texture; serrated margins and a nice cup; very upright growth; DMR I-VIII. (U.S. Patent pending) Green Romaine Mutiny DMR I-VI A green romaine variety with exceptionally thick texture; compared to Lexington, it produces darker colored leaves with serrated leaf margins; Mutiny is fast growing and has a very upright habit; it has a potential for high yields and a long shelf life due to thick leaf texture; DMR I-VI. (U.S. Patent No. 7,579,519) Red Romaine Showdown DMR I-VIII A dual-purpose baby leaf lettuce that can be used as Red Leaf or Red Romaine in spring mix salads; it was derived from a red leaf pedigree but its baby leaves have a romaine-like shape; it produces dull, deep wine-red leaves with serrated margins and remarkably thick texture; DMR I-VIII. Red Oak Leaf Asilomar DMR I-VIII As attractive as Stealth but with higher resistance to mildew; produces leaves with excellent color and shape for baby leaf salads; it has good texture and a mild, non-bitter flavor; slightly more vigorous than Stealth; DMR I-VIII. Red Oak Leaf Stealth DMR I-VI An oak leaf lettuce that produces attractive, wine-red colored leaves with good texture; baby leaves have a medium-broad shape and smooth, wavy margins; DMR I-VI. (U.S. Protected Variety / PVPA No. 201400032) Red Leaf Blackhawk DMR I-VI A variety developed for baby leaf salads that produces very dark, winered colored leaves; the leaves have a broad shape, ruffled leaf margins and pliable texture; compared to Cavalry, this is a little more vigorous, it has slightly darker color and curlier margins; DMR I-VI. (U.S. Patent No. 7,371,931) Red Leaf Gimlet DMR I-VIII Gimlet is a new red leaf lettuce selected for baby leaf salads. It produces glossy, wine-red leaves with wavy leaf margins and good texture. The leaves have a narrow stem which makes for a small cut surface. DMR I-VIII. (U.S. Patent Filed) Lollo Rossa Fortress DMR I-VIII A triple-red Lollo Rossa with a higher level of mildew resistance and all the features required for baby leaf; medium to slow vigor, as expected for varieties of this type; leaves have a short, broad leaf shape and frilly margins; produces a uniform crop of wine-red colored leaves with a slightly blistered leaf texture; DMR I-VIII. (U.S. Patent No. 7,342,149) Lollo Rossa Strikeforce DMR I-VIII A new variety with the growth rate and leaf structure typical of Lollo Rossa lettuce; produces dark, wine-red leaves with a rounded shape and frilly margins; slightly blistered leaves with good texture; DMR I-VIII. Green Tango Sergeant A variety in the Tango class with thicker texture and darker, lime-green color; produces multi-lobed leaves with spiky, undulating leaf margins; its growth rate is similar to that of Tango. (U.S. Patent No. 7,314,977) Green Tango Mojito DMR I-VIII Mojito is a new Tango lettuce selected for baby leaf salads. The leaves have a nice Tango shape, very thick texture and dark green color. DMR I-VIII (U.S. Patent Filed) Green Tango NIZ 44-4707 BL 1-16, 18, 20-21, 23-25 Is a unique product with dark-green, curvy leaves. It has crispy texture which gives eye appeal and volume to bagged salad. BL 1-16, 18, 20-21, 23-25. Red Tango Spritzer DMR I-VIII A new red Tango lettuce for baby leaf salads. Attractive divided leaves with frilly margins, wine-red color and good texture. Better tolerance to mildew, wind and frost damage compared to competitor varieties. DMR I-VIII. Lettuce Guide for Imperial & Yuma Baby Leaf Greens Arugula, Roquette (Eruca sativa) Produces medium green, tender leaves that have a distinctive, spicy flavor; leaves are lobed at the top and have smaller, irregular lobes along the stem. Arugula, Daytona (Eruca sativa) This arugula is fast growing like standard Salad Arugula but its leaf shape is more similar to that of Wild Rocket. The leaves are very lobed or incised and have a peppery flavor. It is very uniform and matures in 30-40 days depending on the season. Arugula, SSC 2965 A new salad arugula with upright growth, long petioles and nice, dark green color. It’s a vigorous variety that produces leaves with minimal lobing. Compared to standard salad arugula, SSC 2965 is darker green, has thicker leaf texture, it’s slower growing and later to bolt. For baby leaf salads and micro-greens. Wild Rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) A baby leaf ingredient that adds texture and a spicy flavor to salads; produced thick, dark green leaves with a narrow, deeply lobed shape; it is highly mildew tolerant and has a slower growth rate compared to the standard baby greens. Wild Rocket, Wasabi (Diplotaxis erucoides) ”Wasabi” rocket is a new development in wild arugula with a flavor that’s surprisingly similar to wasabi or horse radish; compared to standard Wild Rocket, this strain is more vigorous, has a different leaf shape and is considerably more spicy; it produces a cluster of leaves from a central stem, varying in shape from oval with scalloped margins, to leaves having a rounded top and lobes along the stem; the leaves are a deep green color and have strong texture; it can be harvested for baby leaf at 30-35 days from sowing, or sooner in mid-summer plantings. (Not recommended for production to mature size.) (U.S. Patent No. 8,546,649 and Plant Breeders’ Rights pending) Wild Rocket, Nature A variety that is well-suited for the North American market on a year-round basis. Very erect plant habit. Bright, dark-green leaf color. Mild, yet flavorful pungency. Fuller leaf versus stem ratio. Tolerance to bolting. It’s strong attributes make Nature a top choice amongst professional growers. Lettuce Guide for Imperial & Yuma Baby Leaf Greens Beet (red), Detroit Dark Red Detroit Dark Red is a standard variety for baby leaf salad mix. Detroit Dark Red has medium green leaves with slight red tinges. Beet (red), Bull’s Blood An ideal ingredient for baby leaf salads where diversity of color is required; it produces dark burgundy colored leaves with color extending the length of the slender stem; the leaves have a narrow-oval shape and have a fairly smooth, thick texture; matures 28-35 days from sowing when grown for baby leaves. W E N Mizuna (SSC 3178), Origami A new strain of mizuna developed to have greater uniformity and the ability to maintain narrow leaves on the re-growth. The leaves have heavier texture, stockier stems and a darker green color than standard mizuna. “Provisional Patent Filed” Mizuna A vigorous mustard that produces deeply incised leaves with long, thin stalks; leaf color is medium to dark green and the flavor is milder than most mustards; slow bolting and cold tolerant. Ethiopian Kale, Amara Amara is an Ethiopian Kale with uniform, vigorous growth. It produces dark green, oval shaped leaves with scalloped margins. The leaves have good texture and a mild flavor with a hint of garlic. Compared to standard Ethiopian Kale, Amara is darker green and has a more controlled growth rate. Recommended for baby leaf and micro-greens production. (PVP Application No. 201400078) Kale, Lacinato Lacinato is a vigorous kale with blue-green savoyed leaves. Lettuce Guide for Imperial & Yuma Baby Leaf Greens Kale, Dwarf Siberian Very vigorous variety with slightly curled blue-green leaves. A great alternative for baby leaf plantings. Red Mustard, Barbarossa This red mustard is a tremendous improvement over Red Giant because it develops a more uniform, darker red color on the leaf surface and underside; like Red Giant, its attractive oval leaves with scalloped margins and good texture are ideal for baby leaf salads; its mild, mustard flavor and rapid growth rate are similar to that of Red Giant. Red Mustard, SSC 2784 A new frilly red mustard that produces a tough leaf that should process well in spite of its finely divided leaves; the leaves are a deep, wine-red color and have succulent, bright green stems with good texture and mild flavor. Swiss Chard (green), Barese A very uniform and fast growing variety with very upright growth; produces medium green leaves with white stems and veins; leaf texture is remarkably thick and smooth. Swiss Chard (red) This chard produces dark green leaves with intense read veins and petioles; leaves are smooth and have finely scalloped edges. Tatsoi A vigorous growing mustard that produces very dark, thick leaves; leaves have rounded shape with smooth margins and prominent, white petioles. Shamrock Seed Co., Inc. Resistance may be conferred by general plant health or by resistance genes. The use of resistance genes is a well documented method of conferring mildew resistance in lettuce. The use of resistant varieties, in conjunction with proper pesticide, fertilizer, cultivation and irrigation practices, will go a long way to reducing or eliminating infection. However, various factors, such as stress and pathogen populations, often lead to a resistant plant becoming infected.
