information about our school and our Baseball Program. We have a proud tradition of athletics at C.B.A. Our
baseball program is a part of the many exceptional athletic programs here in Lincroft. I am proud of the many
accomplishments that our players have had on and off the field. I am also proud of the fraternity that has been built
over the years by our Baseball Alumni.
We continue to work hard with our present student athletes to educate them about the hard work and
accomplishments of our past players. Our talented alumni laid the foundation for our exceptional program and they
are forever a part of our program. Hundreds of exceptionally talented and hardworking players and teams have
“worn the pinstripes” at C.B.A. Our media guide is a way to continue to connect alumni with the current players.
We remain proud of building what is one of the top baseball programs in the region.
I can speak as a former student, athlete, teacher and coach that there is no better place for a student/athlete to grow
than here at C.B.A. I am proud and thankful to have been a part of the Christian Brothers Community for over 45
years.

COACH MARTY KENNEY
Career Record: 756-319
Coach Kenney became the Head Baseball Coach at C.B.A in 1974. During his 40th
season, Coach Kenney joined an exclusive fraternity when he won his 700th Varsity
Baseball Game at Christian Brothers Academy. Coach Kenney is one of only four baseball coaches in the state of
New Jersey to reach that milestone. He is currently second all time in the state of N.J. with 756 wins.
Coach Kenney’s 2015 season may have been his most memorable. The team achieved what is known as ”THE
QUAD”, winning their Division, County Tournament, Shore Conference Tournament, S.J.
Sectional and Parochial A’ State Title. This achievement earned them #23 & #21 Rankings
in the U.S.A as well as being ranked #1 in the Tri-State, State, Shore Conference and County.
These accomplishment earned him the 2015 NJ State Coach of the Year award.
Coach Kenney is a member of both the New Jersey State Coaches Association Hall of Fame
and the Jersey Shore Athletic Hall of Fame. He is also a current member on the executive
board of the New Jersey State Baseball Coaches Association. In 2003 he received the Jim
Sullivan Award for his many contributions to baseball in Monmouth County. In 2006 he was awarded the Joseph
B. Hartman “Man of the Year” Award for his contributions to
Coach Kenney’s
baseball in the state of New Jersey by the NJSBCA. The Star
Ledger newspaper named Coach Kenney the 2009 N.J. State
Milestones
Baseball Coach of the Year. He also earned the NJ Coach of the
Year Honor from Gatorade/U.S.A. Today in 2015

Coach Kenney attended C.B.A. where he was a three year varsity
baseball and basketball player. He was the starting point guard on
the 1965 Basketball State Championship team, the first ever state
championship team for C.B.A.
Coach Kenney accepted a
scholarship for basketball to Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y.
where he also played baseball.

JOE LAROCCA:
Varsity Assistant Coach
Joe is a former All-County and All-Shore
player at Christian Brothers Academy. He
started his college baseball career at Sacred Heart University
before moving on to Brookdale Community College in 2000.
Joe finished his collegiate years at Wagner College in Staten
Island where he was selected to the All-Northeast Conference
team.
Joe was hired by C.B.A. as the freshman coach in 2003. In
2006 he took over the J.V. position before becoming an
Assistant Varsity Coach in 2009. Joe also coaches the Summer
League team for the Colts.
Joe is a science teacher at Joseph Bolger Middle School in
Keansburg.
PAT REYNOLDS:
J.V. Baseball Coach
Pat is beginning his 6th season as a
baseball coach at CBA. Pat was hired
as the freshman coach in 2009 before
becoming the J.V. coach in 2013.
In 2015, Coach Reynolds led the JV team to a 23-2 record,
winning both the JV Monmouth County and Shore Conference
Tournaments.
Pat played high school baseball at St. Rose in Belmar. During
his Junior and Senior season’s (2003 & 04) Pat was named
First Team All-Shore as well as was selected to the Jersey
Shore Carpenter Cup Team. Pat continued his baseball career
on the college level at Manhattan College.

Pat is also a Physical Education and Health teacher at C.B.A.
Brother Tim begins his third season
as an assistant coach with our freshman
baseball program. Br. Tim came to CBA
in 2012 after serving seven years as the
President of West Catholic HS in Philadelphia. Prior to
W. Catholic, Brother Tim was the principal at Hudson
Catholic H.S. in New Jersey. Br. Tim currently teaches U.S.
History at C.B.A. in addition to his coaching duties with the
freshman baseball team.

Program Pitching Coordinator
Marty has spent 18 years coaching on the
high school, college and professional levels. Marty began
coaching with his father at C.B.A. during the early and mid
90's before becoming the Associate Head Baseball Coach at
DeSales University in Pennsylvania in the fall of 1998.
During his seven years at DeSales Univ. (1998-2005), DeSales
was nationally ranked all seven seasons, won (7) conference
championships and advanced to the NCAA Regional
tournament (6) times. In 2003, DeSales won the NCAA
Regional and advanced to the Division III College World
Series. While at DeSales Univ. Marty also served as an
Assistant Director of Admissions.
During the 2006-2011 seasons, Marty served as a Professional
Pitching Coach for the Schaumburg Flyers and Kansas City TBones in the Northern League as well as the Evansville Otters
in the Frontier League.
As a player, Marty was an All-County and Shore selection,
selected to the N.J. State All-Star Game, chosen as one of the
top 25 high school pitchers in the nation by Collegiate Baseball
Magazine and USA Today. He accepted a full baseball
scholarship to the Univ. of Richmond during his senior year.
KEVIN DONAHUE:
Freshman Baseball Coach
Kevin was a former standout catcher at
C.B.A. His play and leadership helped
his 1997 Colts team win the A' North
Division and Monmouth County titles as
well as reach the finals of the Shore Conference Tournament.
Kevin continued his playing career at Mary Washington
College before transferring to Rowan University. After
receiving his Master's at the University of Maryland, Kevin
began working as a Guidance Counselor at Lacey Twp. H.S. in
2006. Kevin spent five years as a Lacey Township Assistant
Varsity Baseball Coach before being hired to be the Lions
Softball Coach in 2012. Kevin was hired by CBA in 2014
where he serves as the Director of Admissions.

BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONS:
Martorano RBI double gives CBA MCT title
LAKEWOOD – Brandon Martorano's double to right
center in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Will
Morgan with the winning run and gave Christian Brothers
Academy a 5-4 win over Wall on Tuesday night in the
Monmouth County Tournament championship game at
FirstEnergy Park.
It was second double, third hit and second RBI of the game
for Martorano, a junior catcher. It was also the second
consecutive MCT title and seventh overall for CBA (19-5).
Martorano's hit enabled CBA junior right-hander Luca
Dalatri to improve to 7-0 on the season and 18-0 over the
last two seasons.
Dalatri, who also had three hits, two doubles and three
RBI, struck out 12, walked none and allowed four runs,
two earned, on eight hits.
Will Morgan began the winning rally with a one-out single
to right. Martorano then ripped a 2-2 pitch from Wall
starter Ryan Orender (5-2) up the alley in right center.
Morgan raced all the way home from first. Mar
CBA, which had led 3-0 after three, tied the game 4-4 in
the bottom of the fifth on Dalatri's RBI double. With
runners on first and second and one out, Dalatri hit a fly
ball to deep left. Left fielder Nick Martinez made a gallant
attempt to catch the ball, but the ball appeared to come out
of his glove as he collided with the fence, allowing Will
Morgan to score. Morgan had doubled with one out and
Martorano followed with a walk.
Two batters later, Martinez made a diving catch — his
second diving catch of the game — to end the inning.
Wall (20-7) had taken its first lead in dramatic fashion in
the top of the fifth as first baseman Zach Wilson stroked a
two-out, two-run single to right with the bases loaded.
With CBA up 3-2, Nolan Cloney led off with a double to
left center. Martinez reached with an infield single to third
and Brendan Barcas' bunt single to the left of the mound
loaded the bases with nobody.
Dalatri appeared on his way out of the inning with
strikeouts of Wall slugging catcher Dan Wondrack and
Orender before Wilson flared a 2-1 pitch to right to score
Cloney and Martinez.
A misplayed fly ball with two out in the top of the fourth
that allowed two runs to scored enabled Wall to pull within
3-2.
Wondrack led off with a single and Orender followed with
a swinging bunt single to the left of the pitching mound.
Dalatri appeared to be on his way out of the inning by
striking out the next two hitters.
CBA struck first in the bottom of the second as Dalatri
helped himself.Martorano led off with a double to left
center. Dalatri then plated Martorano with a double down
the third base line.
The Colts added two more in the bottom of the third. All of
the damage came with two out and once again Dalatri
helped himself. The rally began when Andrew Buccellato
was hit by a pitch. Will Morgan walked. Martarano drove
in the first run of the inning with a single to left. Dalatri
followed with an RBI single to left.

CBA CLAIMS SECOND STRAIGHT SCT CROWN
The final week of the season is typically reserved for aces,
shrewdly used and monitored to optimize their availability for
games with state championships hanging in the balance. Christian
Brothers hasn’t had that luxury but you won’t hear it crying
poverty either. For the nearly a month, the Colts have been
unbeatable, the string of wins they’ve compiled presenting a
unique and welcomed dilemma along with a rare opportunity. As
one game runs into the next, the magnitude of their meaning only
increases, from county titles, to sectional crowns to conference
championships.
Through it all, one thing has become crystal clear: CBA may
have a highly-visible hammer at the top of its rotation in junior
standout Luca Dalatri but the arms that stack up behind him are
equally capable of nailing down critical victories. The
combination of junior right-handers Joe Gargana and Ken
Campbell epitomized the “next man up” vibe that permeates from
the Colts’ staff these days, pairing to spin a three-hit shutout as
third-seeded Christian Brothers, No. 2 in the MSG Varsity TriState Top 20, grabbed its second consecutive Shore Conference
Tournament title on Thursday night by blanking eight-seeded
Red Bank Catholic, 4-0, at Toms River North.
The win marked the fourth crown the Colts (26-5), winners of 13
in a row, have adorned, joining the A North divisional banner, a
second straight Monmouth County Tournament trophy and the
South Jersey, Non-Public A title secured on Wednesday. All that
remains on the table for CBA to match the five championships
reaped by Wall in 2004 is the Non-Public A final on Saturday
and a marquee matchup with top-ranked and unbeaten Don
Bosco (29-0).
“Finally, I got the chance to tell them to take the next day and a
half to enjoy what they have accomplished,” said CBA coach
Marty Kenney, who with the win, ran his career sum to 755,
second only to Toms River South’s Ken Frank (825). “It seems
like you’re rolling from one game to the next. Even when it’s not
a championship game and even when you win a championship,
the next day you’re back out on the field playing again, either in a
tournament or another championship game. You want to tell them
to enjoy but at the same time, you have to prepare for someone
else.”
Rolling is the operative word which has made that final point less
of a burden.
Gargana addressed a desperate need by absorbing two innings in
a spot start, allowing one hit, one walk and stranding four in his
appearance. Campbell (5-2) took care of the rest, yielding two
hits, walking a pair and fanning two over the final five. “I was

zoned in so it didn’t matter when I came in,” said Campbell. “Joe
pitched amazing the first two innings and did all we asked. It
came together, the offense pulled through and I did my job. RBC
is a big rivalry. It felt good to get this one.”
While the rich and often overlooked pitching depth of the Colts
has garnered notice, especially in the last week, quietly the length
of its order has risen to match the heightened climate that comes
with games in June. Junior Cid Porter, the quintessential leadoff
man, scored twice, including the game’s initial run in the bottom
of the first. After reaching on an error, Porter was sacrificed to
second from where he raced home on Dalatri’s bloop single. His
speed and savvy were captured in fourth when he tagged and
scored on a heady read of Brandon Martorano’s tricky pop up
into shallow right.
But, beyond his tangible contributions, Porter offers a public
service for CBA, working deep counts with his team’s best
interest in mind. “If I’m behind in the count, I don’t think it’s a
bad thing, I think it’s a great thing,” he said. “I want to see as
many off speed pitches I can, what the pitcher is throwing, if he’s
tailing or throwing curve balls. That lets the guys behind me get a
look and I can tell them what to expect.”
While Dalatri and Martorano each did their usual thing, driving
in runs, the Colts got an added boost from the lower third of their
order. Senior Matt D’Angelo went 2 for 3, including turning on a
pitch for a lead-off double in the second. Two batter’s later, No. 9
hitter James Miller pushed him across by lining a single to right
for a 2-0 advantage. D'Angelo, Miller and Trey Nelson, batting
eighth, combined to go 4 for 9. “We all have to produce,” noted
D’Angelo, a senior shortstop and St. Peter’s recruit. “The guys at
the top of the lineup aren’t going to hit every day. It’s up to us to
step up and put good swings on the ball. We’ve all worked so
hard, we all want to get the big hit for each other.”
Senior Will Morgan drew a bases-loaded walk in front of
Martorano’s sac fly in the fourth when the cushion was extended
to 4-0. Campbell opened his stint by retiring the first five he
faced and got a lift from the defense in the fifth when senior
second baseman Andrew Buccellatto triggered a 4-6-3 double
play.

CBA Takes Its Place In History By Beating Don
Bosco Prep to Win Non-Public A Crown

TOMS RIVER - Usually saying a
team from a specific year was the
best in Shore Conference history
explodes into a million different
arguments, but Christian Brothers
Academy achieved the rare feat on
Saturday of making its greatness
hard to argue against.
The Colts became just the second
team in Shore Conference history
after the 2004 Wall squad to win the
Quintuple Crown, claiming five
titles in one season, when they
buried previously undefeated Don
Bosco Prep, the No. 9 team in the
country, 7-0 to win the NJSIAA
Non-Public A title at Toms River
East. Junior right-hander Luca
Dalatri put together a masterpiece
with a four-hit shutout in which he
struck out 12 against one of the
most fearsome lineups in New
Jersey, one that no team had been
able to solve in 29 previous games
this spring.

“It’s incredible,” said senior
outfielder Will Morgan. “The kid is
a stud. To have 12 strikeouts against
that caliber of a team, that’s just
amazing.”
To finish the job on the Quintuple
Crown, the Colts had to beat Bishop
Eustace and Don Bosco Prep, who
were ranked 1-2 in the state, and
they won by a combined 9-0. They
also shut out Red Bank Catholic 4-0
in the Shore Conference
Tournament final this week. The
end result is the greatest season of
any baseball team in Shore
Conference history.
Hall of Famer Marty Kenney, who
is second all time in wins in New
Jersey history, has been coaching at
CBA for 42 years. He didn’t
hesitate when asked if this is the
greatest season any team in this area
has ever had.

“I think so, based upon what we had
to go through,” Kenney said. “It
wasn’t easy. We always stress the
essence of a team.”
The Colts might all still be
teenagers, but now they are
immortal.
“When Coach Kenney says
that…he’s been here so long,”
Dalatri said. “To be in that caliber is
a great feeling. It’s surreal.”
“I think it’s incredible to be a part
of this, especially my senior year,”
Morgan said. “The 2004 Wall team
was a great team, but I think the
teams that we played, the talent that
we had to face, was very tough.”
Saturday marked the first time in
CBA’s incredible run that the Colts
were an underdog. The Ironmen
entered at 29-0 with a national
ranking, but it’s not like CBA was
chopped liver. There were two
players on the field who are
committed to national power North
Carolina, and neither of them were
on Don Bosco Prep. One of them is
Dalatri, and the other is junior
catcher Brandon Martorano, who
slugged a two-run homer in the first
inning to get the party started.
“This is not a David and Goliath
(situation),” Kenney said. “We’re
pretty damn good, too. They’re
playing with so much confidence,
they feel like they can play with
anybody. They weren’t intimidated
by Don Bosco. We knew they had
somewhat of an ego. You can tell,
by their presence, but we weren’t
going to back off, that’s for sure.”
“To play a 29-0 team, No. 9 in the
country, and come out and blank
them 7-0 is just a testament to how
hard these guys in that dugout work
and how much their heart is into it,”
Martorano said.
This CBA team has all the attributes
you would want in arguing to be the
greatest in Shore Conference
history. It has the five titles, the
shutout wins over top programs in
championship games, multiple
Division I players, and a pitcher
who is rapidly going from having
“star” before his name to
“legendary.” Dalatri is now a
combined 20-0 over the past two
seasons and already has a CBArecord 25 total victories.
He buzzsawed a lineup that had just
mercy-ruled St. Joseph-Montvale in
the Non-Public North A final. For
good measure, he also launched
about a 350-foot solo home run in
the fifth inning to help his cause.
“Like I said back at the end of his
freshman year, his ceiling is
unlimited,” Kenney said. “The thing
that’s always been great about Luca
that separates him from others is
that he’s had command of his
pitches at an early age, even as a
freshman. Rarely does he make

mistakes down the middle of the
plate.”
“I think he believes that he needs to
go out there and be the man, and
that’s what he does,” Martorano
said. “He goes out there and shoves
it, and we just back him up on
offense.”

Martorano also gave CBA the only
runs it would need when he
launched an 0-2 pitch over the rightfield fence for a two-run homer, his
11th of the season, in the top of the
first inning.
“As soon as Brandon hit that, we
were inside the pitcher’s head,” said
outfielder Cid Porter. “He was
rattled completely.”
“I just wanted to go out and show
these guys, ‘Hey we can hang with
Bosco,”’ Martorano said.
CBA also has shown constant
resilience throughout this season,
which it ended with a 14-game
winning streak. The Colts were on
the ropes in the SCT quarterfinals
against Middletown South, down 51 in the seventh inning before
rallying to tie it and win in extra
innings. Martorano also gave the
Colts a walk-off win against Wall in
the Monmouth County Tournament,
and he and Morgan had five walkoff hits combined this year.
Plus, CBA weathered the loss of
senior first baseman John Moschella
to a season-ending injury early in
the spring. Moschella was off to a
great start and is an All-Shore
talent, but collectively the Colts
were able to patch the hole in the
lineup and keep winning. It also
helped that their pitching down the
stretch was dominant, led by Dalatri
and fellow senior Mike Garvey with
important contributions from juniors
Kenny Campbell and Joe Gargana
as well as freshman Nick
Hohenstein.
For the second straight season, the
Shore Conference will have the No.
1 team in the state after St. John
Vianney earned that honor last year.
This is the first time in history that
Shore teams have won back-to-back
Non-Public A titles. Add it all up,
and you have a team that will
always be brought up in the
conversation in the future any time
a new squad starts edging into “best
team of all time” territory.
“We’re all kind of in shock right
now,” Dalatri said. “We’re just
amped, and we’re enjoying the
moment. I think tomorrow or the
next day it will sink in what we did

“What I learned is, you can’t just
blow away a team like that,”
Dalatri said. “You can’t just run
fastballs up there without some
kind of set-up. I know now that
you can’t take pitches off. “To
pitch at that level, you need to
pitch your best every game. I
need to do it at the next level, so
why not start now?”
So for anyone who presumed it
bordered on impossible for the
6-foot-6, 240-pound Christian
Brothers junior to pitch better
than he has the past two seasons
– where he went 20-0 with 212
strikeouts in 143 innings – know
that Dalatri is fully aware
improvement is doable.

Here’s something to think about
for 2016: the big guy said he
would be even better next year
when he returns to CBA – and
he made it crystal clear that it
would be CBA.
“I know there are rumors out
there,” said Dalatri, who is
rumored to be heading to IMG
Academy in Florida where he
could have joined former
Barnegat ace Jason Groome.
“I’ll be back here.”

knew Luca would keep us in the
game, but I certainly didn’t
expect 12 strikeouts.”
Dalatri, however, managed to
raise his level beyond that which
won him New Jersey Gatorade
Player of the Year honors this
spring. “I was so fired up,”
Dalatri said. “But I had to
contain all those emotions. My
arm felt great, but I knew I
couldn’t just throw all fastballs –
that team would have figured it
out.”
So Dalatri mixed and matched,
throwing, by his estimate, 60
percent fastballs and 40 percent
off-speed.
“I didn’t want to be a
junkballer,” Dalatri said, with
the pride of a drop-and-drive
guy. “Location was a big deal.”
As Kenney noted, Dalatri was
“throwing 88-89 mph and hitting
spots.” “He threw all of his
pitches on any count,” Kenney
said. Just like he did all season
long. Dalatri was 9-0 this spring
after finishing 11-0 as a junior.
“Really the two seasons were
pretty similar,” Dalatri said. “I
had one no-decision and had one
relief appearance where I didn’t
get a decision. Had I won those
two games, my record would
have been the same as it was last
year.”

His statistics bear out Dalatri’s
theory. In 2014, he fanned 90 in
72 innings with a 0.39 ERA. In
2015, he pitched 71 innings,
struck out 112 and walked just
seven. He allowed 14 runs
overall, only nine of those
earned. “Really,” Kenney said,
“if he walks two in a game it’s a
lot.”
In three seasons of varsity
pitching, Dalatri is 25-2. He can
equal the Shore Conference
record for career pitching
victories held by former Toms
River East star Casey Gaynor
(34) with another nine-win
season or break it with more.
Gaynor is now the pitching
coach at Rutgers University.
Dalatri was also a differencemaker at the plate. Batting in the
No. 5 spot, he prevented teams
from pitching around clean-up
hitter Brandon Maturin, who
clubbed a Shore Conferenceleading 11 homers.
Dalatri hit nine home runs. He
led CBA with 44 RBI and
smacked a team-high 11
doubles. He had 35 hits with
only 16 strikeouts. He finished
with a .402 batting average, .480
on-base percentage and .839
slugging percentage.

rookie season, the University of North Carolina
recruit has improved exponentially with each
subsequent season.
threatened to end the Colts’ historic run right then
and there, but Martorano ignited a four-run seventh
inning with his second home run of the game and
won the game in the bottom of the eighth with a
walk-off RBI single that kept the Colts alive.
After matching the school record – held by his
current head coach, Kenney – with his seventh career
triple early in the season, Martorano must have
decided he had had enough running and started
hitting the ball over the fence. He did not hit his first
home run until April 17, but once the first ball
cleared the fence, the homers kept coming.
That game-winning hit against Middletown South
was the third walk-off hit in four games for
Martorano, who sent the Colts to the Monmouth
County Tournament final with a tie-breaking walkoff single against Manalapan in the bottom of the
seventh and then won the MCT title with a walk-off
double to beat Wall in the MCT final, 5-4, at
FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood.
Martorano, who committed to the University of
North Carolina before his sophomore season and
entered this season with two career home runs, had
three home runs heading into a May 7 showdown
with Manalapan. CBA had just lost to Middletown
South and with four division losses, was in danger of
letting the Class A North title slip away. For the
second time in two weeks, Martorano took a Braves
pitcher deep, this time for a three-run blast in a 5-1
win. That win was significant because it was the first
of 14 in a row to end the season and five of those
wins clinched a championship of some kind for the
Colts.
The walk-off barrage was far from the end for
Martorano. He hit his eighth home run in a 4-3 win
over St. Augustine in the NJSIAA South Jersey NonPublic A quarterfinals and came back the next day
with a solo blast off of Manasquan left-hander Tom
Sheehan in the Shore Conference Tournament
semifinals, which tied him for the Shore Conference
lead.
While CBA’s pitching rounded into form during the
final month of the season, Martorano’s bat was the
constant throughout the streak. Over those 14 games,
which spanned exactly one calendar month,
Martorano hit eight of his 11 home runs to go with 19
of his 31 RBI while raising his batting average from
.355 to .444.
Martorano took the lead in the home run race for
good by belting a solo shot off Bishop Eustace righthander and Penn State recruit Justin Hagenman in the
second inning at Monmouth University, giving CBA
one of its two runs in a 2-0 win over a team ranked
No. 2 in the state at the time. After beating the
Crusaders in the South Jersey final, CBA jumped on
top of previously undefeated Don Bosco Prep in the
state final on Martorano’s 11th home run of the
season – a two-run shot to right field off Seton Hall
recruit and Ironmen left-hander Cullen Dana.
Of those eight home runs, seven of them came in
tournament games, including two in a come-frombehind win over Middletown South in the Shore
Conference Tournament quarterfinals. The Eagles
took a 5-1 lead into the seventh against CBA and

In his 42 years at the helm, Marty Kenney has accomplished about as much as one high school coach can. His 729 career wins
coming into the season were the second-most in the history of the Shore Conference behind legendary Toms River South coach
Ken Frank and included two overall NJSIAA Group titles, seven sectional titles, six county championships and five Shore
Conference titles.
One feat, however, Kenney had never accomplished was one that only Wall coach Todd Schmitt could lay claim to at the
beginning of the season: winning the Shore Quintuple Crown.

Along the way to a 17th Class A North title, seventh MCT title, sixth SCT title and third state championship, Kenney moved
into second place on the all-time wins list in state history, now trailing only Frank. Kenney ended the season with 756 career
wins, 69 behind Frank (825) for the all-time N.J. record.
While CBA was led by its two North Carolina commits, the Colts evolved into a resilient team with key contributors
throughout the lineup and a strong defensive unit throughout the field. In addition, CBA found the pitching depth that it was
missing last year, when Dalatri was the only reliable, healthy pitcher for the duration of the season.
Kenney turned over the reins to the pitching staff to his son, Marty Jr., and the pitching staff flourished under the younger
Kenney. While Dalatri again headlined the staff with his second consecutive historic season, senior Mike Garvey blossomed
into an All-Shore pitcher while junior Kenny Campbell emerged as a five-game winner with a 2.03 ERA.
Kenney and his staff, which also includes assistant Joe LaRocca, found the right mix with this year’s Colts squad and the result
was a season that ended with 14 straight wins and five championships. Kenney had already cemented his status as an all-time
great in the Shore Conference prior to this season, but by leading his 2015 Colts to what will go down, arguably, as the greatest
season in Shore Conference baseball history, he furthered his case as one of the best coaches in state history.

CBA, which ended last season ranked No. 1 after a season in which it became the second team in Shore Conference history and first since

Players to watch: Luca Dalatri and Brandon Martorano. How can you talk about one without the other? They form arguably the state’s top
battery whenever the dominating Dalatri steps atop the hill and deliver a punishing 1-2 punch with the bat.
Dalatri, the MSG Varsity All-Metro Pitcher of the Year as a junior, has crafted one of the most impressive resumes in New Jersey history. He
went 9-0 last spring, stamped by a vintage performance against Don Bosco in the NJSIAA Non-Public A state final. Dalatri spun a four-hit
shutout that featured 12 strikeouts and added a home run as well in a 7-0 victory. He owns a career mark of 25-2 and hasn’t lost a game since
he was a freshman. His numbers…astronomical. He pitched to a 0.88 ERA, struck out 122 and walked seven in 71 innings as a junior, firing
nine complete games. Oh, and he batted .402 with nine homers, 11 doubles and 44 RBI.
Martorano was the energizing catalyst of a 14-game win streak that closed out 2015, a run in which he went on a hitting tear, batting .530 (26
for 49) with 12 runs, 20 RBI, three doubles and eight HRs, stamped by a two-run blast in the top of the first in the state final. For the season,
Martorano hit .444, drove in 31 runs, scored 29 more and counted 22 extra-base hits among his 48 knocks, including 11 home runs. Not just a
menacing hitter, Martorano is the intellectual glue of the Colts’ defense, constantly communicating to balance his deft handling of the staff.
Although both will be closely watched by MLB scouts, the two may continue their career paths together: they are both committed to North
Carolina.
Mr. Underrated: One big reason why CBA was able to score 214 runs in ’15 hinged on the guy who got everything started. Leadoff batter
Cid Porter had a .422 OBP, scored 29 times, drove in 21 runs and hit .333.

Campbell souped: There’s a good chance Kenny Campbell will slide into the No. 2 slot in the CBA rotation. The senior right-hander won
his last three starts a year ago, including five innings of two-hit shutout work the earn the decision in a 4-0 triumph over Red Bank Catholic
in the Shore Conference Tournament final. He went 5-2 as a junior with a 2.03 ERA.
Arms race: The Colts should be deep when it comes to pitching. Junior Mason O’Mara (2-1) and sophomore Nick Hohenstein (1-0)
contributed meaningful innings down the stretch last spring and juniors Ronnie Meehan and Sal Morreale are expected to provide depth to
the staff.

CBA is coming off arguably the greatest season a Shore Conference team has ever had after winning the quadruple crown –
division, county, conference and state group title – but it might be easy to forget just how close the Colts came to losing a few
of those games. It took a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to survive a Shore Conference Tournament game against
Middletown South and CBA also won the Monmouth County Tournament final against Wall and the NJSIAA South NonPublic A quarterfinal against St. Augustine in walk-off fashion. In addition, CBA did not actually win the Class A North title
outright and lost four times during the course of the season. It is overwhelmingly likely that as talented as this CBA team is, it
will lose at some point this season and will probably lose multiple times in A North given how good the division is.
If any team, however, can roll up a sweep of the major championships two years in a row, it’s a team that as two players the
caliber of Luca Dalatri and Brandon Martorano. Both are committed to play at North Carolina next year, assuming a Major
League organization does not make either a better offer by mid-August. Dalatri has been machine-like in his dominance since
his sophomore year and is already in line to go down as CBA’s best pitcher ever. CBA also returns Cid Porter to center field
and will be restocking a lineup that lost six starters with a number of potential breakout stars. Senior Anthony Falconite will get
a shot at an outfield spot and possibly second base, while sophomores Andrea Dalatri and Jack Harnish have earned an inside
track at starting infield spots – Dalatri at third and Harnish at shortstop.
CBA will have to replace senior Mike Garvey in the pitching staff, but the Colts pitching will be an unquestioned strength of
the group. Kenny Campbell leads the stable behind Dalatri after giving CBA 41 quality innings last year, while juniors Mason
O’Mara, Joe Gargana, Sal Morreale and Ronnie Meehan, as well as sophomore, Nick Hohenstein give coach Marty Kenney
plenty of options. Senior Luke Chece also returns to the mix after an injury-shortened junior year and both Chece and
Hohenstein will likely figure into the infield mix as well. Although the Colts lost some starting talent, their pitching depth
behind three returning All-Shore players – two of whom were tabbed as Louisville Slugger Preseason First Team AllAmericans – makes CBA the early favorite to finish as the state’s top team again in 2016.
