Whatever we do for our mind reflects in the body. For example, if we think negatively, our body suffers from stress. If we think positively, our body relaxes and becomes more immune to illnesses, or disease states. It is the quality of our thoughts that results in what kind of health and general bodily conditions we have. So, it is important to watch and change our feelings into positive thoughts because our health and also wellbeing depends on them. Like how meditation gives our mind a break and prevents it from overworking, positive affirmations are extremely useful, because the constant repetition of a positive phrase will convince our mind of good feelings that we are experiencing. This is a shaped situation, all right, but it helps to convince our mind of our present reality. When we affirm, it starts showing in our thoughts, and also our life. The mind-body connection explains the relationship that exists between our mental processes and bodily states, or processes. When we nurture our mind with good thoughts, our focus improves and the work we do will reflect good quality. It's like reading a good book and deriving joy and positive direction from it. Many of us live in a dream world, hoping to fulfil our dreams and leading a great life. You may have noticed that such people are always getting what they wish for; they are considered “lucky,” because everything they want comes their way. This happens because they are closely aligned to who they really are. You could do this too. It's not difficult — so long as you nurture your mind and body with positive, affirmative thoughts that you too can, no more, no less. As motivational guru, Denis Waitley, rightly said, “Our limitations and success will be based, most often, on your own expectations for ourselves. What the mind dwells upon, the body acts upon.” Dr Mukesh Batra Founder & Chairman DBPHCPL CASE OF THE MONTH Tress Returns M allikarjun first visited our Malleswaram Clinic with a vexed expression, if not annoyance. He was distressed with his problem alopecia areata, an auto-immune disorder, in which the body attacks its own hair roots, causing hair loss in patches. The origin of his complaint was traced to December 2008. It first started off as a small patch in his beard. Initially, he “brushed it aside,” thinking that it was allergy. He also blamed it on kali-mehendi/dye, or “quack” medication, that did not help him. Over a period of time, his hair loss worsened — it spread rapidly all over his scalp. He began to use conventional treatment, but without relief. It was at this point that he turned to homeopathy — on a friend's suggestion. Since he did not know much about homeopathy, he was wary of the results. “But, why not try,” he thought. A detailed case analysis revealed that Mallikarjun was ambitious and irritable by nature. Being a businessman, he had high stress levels. Apart from this, for a practical and fastidious person, he frequently indulged and took comfort in stimulants. He was counselled about his problem and informed that there was no quick-fix, and that patience would help. He was prescribed Nux Vomica 200C, based on his emotional and physical symptoms. He was also advised to practice stress-relieving techniques. 4 I JULY 2010 Before Treatment After Treatment As the treatment progressed, the patches stopped expanding further. Mallikarjun began to gradually get his hair back. He now began to develop faith, or belief, in homeopathy. He is grateful to Dr Batra's for giving him “hair-rising,” excellent results, and for bringing about a positive change in his life. Case handled by Dr Sachin Patil Malleswaram Clinic, DBPHCPL TABLE TALK All About Folic Acid F olic acid is a B-complex vitamin. Your body needs it to produce red blood cells. Folic acid also plays a key role in the metabolism of the amino acid, methionine. If there is a lack of B-complex vitamins particularly folic acid, homocysteine [an amino acid in the blood] can accumulate and make blood cholesterol levels rise dangerously high. High homocysteine levels are strongly linked with the development of osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Folic acid deficiency can cause mental illness. Folic acid deficit can also reduce food absorption and decrease our defence against many diseases. The villi, which line our small intestines, absorb nutrients from food. The rapid turnover of these cells requires large amounts of folic acid. Folic acid is most easily destroyed by light and heat; so, vegetables should be stored in the fridge and cooked for as short a time as possible. Whole grains, rather than their refined equivalents, should be eaten on a daily basis. The synthesis of folic acid is reduced by alcohol, the contraceptive pill, conventional medications [e.g., aspirin], zinc deficiency, and vitamin B-2 [riboflavin] deficiency. Vitamin B-12 [cobalamin] deficiency also causes folic acid to be trapped — it cannot be used by the body. Infection with Helicobacter pylori also seems to have an unhelpful effect on the absorption of folic acid. It is suggested that every woman who is thinking of pregnancy, or is in the first trimester of pregnancy, takes a daily supplement of 400 microgram [mcg] of folic acid and also eats a folate-rich diet to reduce her baby's risk of getting some types of birth defects. Sources Of Folic Acid Leafy green vegetables — e.g., raw spinach peas, corn, cauliflower, green pepper, beetroot, mustard greens, and lady's finger. Fruits such as strawberries, honeydew, or cantaloupe, melons, bananas, pineapple, papaya, oranges, and raspberries. Almonds, cashew nuts, peanuts, and walnuts. Liver Freshly squeezed orange juice Sprouted seeds, sesame seeds, and soybean Whole grains, and yeast extract. 5 I JULY 2010 SMOKING AND HOMEOPATHY Stop Smoking With Homeopathy A ccording to the World Health Organisation [WHO], smoking leads to nearly three million deaths across the globe, every year. In the United States alone, over 420,000 people die of smoking-related causes annually. Everyone talks about the major health dangers of tobacco use. However, for most smokers, kicking the habit for the good is the hardest challenge they face. To quit smoking successfully, people need a “to-do-comewhat-may” strategy, tons of patience, and psychosocial support. In other words, it boils down to the power of one's will — where there's a will, there's always a way… to quit smoking. Smoker's Cough The walls of our airway [trachea] secrete mucous. This keeps the air moist and warm. The surface of the walls is lined with tiny hairs; these move like grass on a meadow. They help to “stir” dust and foreign bodies away from the lungs to be coughed or sneezed out of the airway. In smokers, the hairs become paralysed by nicotine — so, the particles remain in the lungs. This creates the perfect “soil” for viruses and bacteria to cause infection and produce excessive amounts of mucous. Addiction Tobacco is a powerfully addictive drug, where the smoker quickly develops a tolerance for nicotine. Like any other drug 6 I JULY 2010 addiction, users experience withdrawal symptoms — when they stop using nicotine. These include sleeplessness, irritability, anxiety, and depression. This is the bugbear for any remedial measure and/or intervention. Healing with Homeopathy Homeopathy can help increase one's will power, ease and beat one's craving for nicotine and also relieve withdrawal symptoms, safely and gently — without the dangerous side-effects of anti-smoking conventional medications, nicotine patches, or other popular smoking deterrents. Conventional smoking deterrents have been linked with difficulty in breathing, cold sweat, fainting, flushing, sleep disorders, heart palpitations, and visual disturbances. They'll be around a lot longer to thank homeopathy for it. SMOKING AND HOMEOPATHY Two homeopathic remedies that are often used to kick the tobacco habit are Tabacum and Caladium. Tabacum is primarily “homeopathic” tobacco. It is, in other words, “diluted,” or “micro-dose” tobacco. It relates to the “likes cure likes” principle — the motto of homeopathy — “what can cause can cure, and vice versa.” Tabacum reduces the craving for nicotine, while Caladium eases the yearning for it. Nux Vomica is used for the “go-getter” types who “go over the top” with everything in their lives. They are as much addicted to tobacco as socialising. Nux Vomica can also ease both irritability and sleeplessness during tobacco withdrawal. For the best and the most profound results, a professional homeopathic physician, who can “zero-in” on a “customised” remedy for the individual [because each of us is different and unique], and not just the addiction problem, should be consulted. How It Works The unique benefits that homeopathic medicines provide is that they strengthen the person's overall mindset and constitution, so that they are not only less physically addicted to tobacco, but they also feel stronger emotionally, and less socially addicted to what smoking represents for them. Homeopathy is keyed to the individualised, or customised approach, where a remedy is selected on the basis of one’s personality, temperament, sensitivities, sensibilities, and idiosyncrasies. It has the potential to reinforce them physically and psychologically, help them tide over the problem of addiction, and to also giving up the smoking habit for the good. Fact-File Smoke Signals Cigarette, cigar, pipe-smoking, and tobacco use, are so devastating that cessation of the habit is always the first step of any programme to improve one's health — this is suggested to be more important than vitamins, diet, or exercise. Around six million people may die each year worldwide starting from 2010, because of smoking and tobacco-related diseases, according to WHO [World Health Organisation]. Tobacco use may kill one billion people worldwide in the 21st century, if current smoking trends continue. 6.6 billion people are on this planet of which 1.3 billion are smokers. 66 per cent of all smokers live in just 15 countries. 1.8 billion young people aged between 10 and 24 smoke cigarettes. More than 85 per cent of these young smokers live in the developing countries. One billion men and about 250 million women use tobacco, in some form, every day, around the world. 7 I JULY 2010 PCOS AND HOMEOPATHY Coping With Ovarian Cysts A woman is a born multi-tasker, homemaker, wife, mother, and professional. She steps into any of these roles effortlessly; she also tends to attend to everyone's needs. Well, in order to perform her duties, she tends to sometimes neglect her own health and well-being. Women's disorders are soaring at an alarming rate; today, they range from simple menstrual disturbances and infertility to malignancies. A frequently encountered complaint currently on the rise is polycystic ovarian disease. Many women, who have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, have limited success in treating the problem through conventional medication. PCOS is the leading cause of infertility; it is also the most common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. It affects about five per cent of all women. Coping With Complexity Coping with PCOS is complicated; it is also a painful challenge. From the many embarrassing symptoms to difficulty in conceiving, women with PCOS often feel that they are all alone. Hormonal changes are the hallmark of this disease; almost every body system can be affected. Some women may have irregular ovulation or menstruation, increased hair growth in odd places, or excessive effects of masculinising hormones and weight problems. 8 I JULY 2010 The exact cause is not known. Research suggests that the prime cause could be insulin-resistance diabetes, which leads to hormonal imbalance, causing disruption of normal menstruation. The adrenal gland is also said to produce more testosterone in PCOS. This increased level may prevent ovulation and produce symptoms related to the disorder. Polycystic ovary disorder has been linked to a number of health complications, including Type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular [heart] disease and endometrial cancer. The earlier you begin to monitor PCOS, the sooner you can manage symptoms. Conventional treatment of PCOS aims at restoration of the normal menstrual cycle, fertility, lowering of insulin levels, treatment of excessive hair growth and prevention of endometrial cancer, dietary therapy and/or use of contraceptive pills. The downside is they provide only temporary relief, besides leading to dependency without eliminating the problem from the root. In recent times, researchers have shown that alternative treatments, like homeopathy, offer better results when compared to conventional treatment. PCOS AND HOMEOPATHY Healing With Homeopathy Homeopathy corrects imbalances in the body and brings about harmony, without the risk of side-effects. It also helps avoid the use of surgical procedures, while bringing about regularisation of the menstrual cycle, and increasing the chances of conception or preventing recurrence. In a clinical trial of 36 women suffering from PCOS, fitting the mental picture of the homeopathic remedy, Pulsatilla 30C, 32 had complete disappearance of symptoms of PCOS, followed by the production of normal ovulating follicles. A further 4 of the 36 became asymptomatic [Source: Sanchez-Resendiz J, GuzmanGomez F, “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome,” Boletin, Mexicano de Homeopatica, 30, 1997, 11-15]. By the way, the homeopathic medicine Calcarea Flouricum is evidenced to dissolve cysts, while Apis Mellifica is indicated as a general remedy in PCOS. However, it is imperative to speak to a professional homeopathic physician for the best, tangible, long-term results. Self-Help Along with medications, the following dietary recommendations are useful in PCOS. Eating carbohydrate alone, as many of us do, may not be a good idea. Instead, combine them with proteins and/or moderate fat intake Try to select foods with lower glycaemic index, as they cause a slower rise in blood sugar [Example, bran, bread, cereals] Drink at least 10-12 glasses of water; keep yourself well hydrated Limit foods high in saturated and transfats [i.e., red meat, whole milk, dairy, butter and stick margarine, chicken skin, fat/fried foods, rich dessert] Select monounsaturated fats [olive oil, canola oil, nuts] and omega-3 fats [fatty fish, such as salmon and bluefish, flaxseed, nuts] Exercise, under the guidance of a trainer, on a regular basis A calcium supplement [1,000 mg] fortified with folic acid [400 mcg] is recommended Homeopathic treatment depends upon one's personality, unique nature of symptoms and/or characteristics and also one's overall constitution, and not just looking at the disorder in isolation. 9 I JULY 2010 HELLO DOCTOR A Blemish Eased I was suffering from psoriasis for over 10 years. The problem increased over a period of time — it took a big toll on my life. I could no longer mingle with friends and others due to embarrassment. I tried various treatments, but everything failed. In my search for long-term results, I turned up at Dr Batra's Jaipur Clinic. Soon after the treatment began, the patches stopped spreading, and as the treatment continued — they disappeared completely, much to my own surprise. It's been few years now; there has been no recurrence. I thank Dr Deepa Sharma for helping me get rid of this embarrassment. Many thanks to Dr Batra's Homeopathy. Pushkar was suffering from white patches [vitiligo] on his legs and arms. They were spreading rapidly. Knowing that conventional treatment offered no more than temporary results, they came to us in search of long-term relief. Pushkar was put under Dr Deviprasad's clinical expertise, who after detailed case analysis and history prescribed him Calcarea Phosphoricum 200C, based on his lean stature, stubbornness and desire for travel. As the treatment progressed, the patches stopped spreading. Better still, they slowly disappeared… much to his and his parents' delight. HEALTH QUIZ 1. The medical name of cancer of blood is a.
