Larnaka is a destination which offers all possible amenities, but on the other hand, it has plenty of hidden gems. And that is why the Larnaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry is, for the sixteenth consecutive year, issuing the “Larnaka This Month” edition. We want to recommend to you places and attractions worth visiting and interesting monthly events which will not only entertain you but will also get you acquainted with the Cypriot culture. Every piece of Larnaka offers something special and we want to show it to our esteemed visitors. What I personally love about Larnaka is the fact that it has the atmosphere of a small city and the convenience of a metropolitan area. Larnaka has qualities that distinguish the region from other holiday resorts. You can rarely find a place which combines historic attractions, the commercial centre, cosmopolitan promenades and blue-flag awarded beaches together with numerous activities, all in a single area. So, Larnaka’s compact size is what makes the destination special together with other characteristics which can be revealed by reading this edition. Wishing you a memorable holiday ... and make sure you truly experience Larnaka to its fullest! A city with a continuous and uninterrupted history. Larnaka is the third largest city of the Republic of Cyprus in terms of population. It hosts the main international airport, a port and a nice marina for yachts. It has clean sandy beaches with clear blue waters and an efficient tourist infrastructure. The town is organized with everything that a large city can offer. The development plan of the city is extremely ambitious and it is already turning the wider Larnaka area into a field of investments and opportunities. The regeneration projects will unify the city center promenade with the popular palm tree –finikoudes pleasure and entertainment area. Furthermore, a number of other projects in the city are already under materialization and I urge you to find out about them by enjoying a walk in the city. Larnaka is worth visiting! Message from the Larnaka Tourism Board Chairman Mr. Dinos Lefkaritis On behalf of the Larnaka Tourism Board, I would like to warmly welcome you to the lovely coastal region of Larnaka! Larnaka is considered to be Cyprus’s oldest town. With a history of 10.000 years, Larnaka is the gateway to Cyprus and a magical blend of old and new. From its traditional architecture, authentic taverns and local handicrafts to its cultural sites and religious monuments, old Larnaka is an evocative glimpse into a Cyprus past. New and modern Larnaka harmoniously intertwines with the elements of ancient Kition and offers the cosmopolitan visitor beautiful sandy beaches, a bustling promenade lined with cafes and restaurants, brand-name shopping, advanced infrastructure and every conceivable amenity. Larnaka has numerous landmarks and unique places of interest. This useful edition shall enable to you discover Larnaka’s hidden treasures and make the most out of your stay! 6 SEPTEMBER 2015 7 june 2015 LARNAKA: Historical and other places to see The successor of the ancient city-Kingdom of Kition and the birthplace of Zeno, the great Stoic philosopher. Evidence of Larnaka’s glorious past are scattered all accross the region. The most interesting places worth visiting in and around Larnaka are the following: Church of St. Lazarus: Of great interest is the church of St. Lazarus. As the name suggests, it was built to enshrine the tomb of Lazarus, who, according to legend, was expelled from Bethany after his resurrection and forced into an unseaworthy boat which brought him to Kiti. Here he met with the Apostles and was consecrated a bishop and canonised. The Saint’s remains were discovered and removed in 890AD. However, the sarcophagus is held in great veneration to this day. Angeloktisti Church: At Kiti, to the west of Larnaka town, is the famous church of PANAYIA ANGELOKTISTI ("build by Angels”). This 11th Century building replaced an earlier one, whilst the chapel at the entrance is of the 14th Century. The outstanding feature of the church is its splendid early Byzantine mosaic, considered to be the finest on the island. The church is certainly worth visiting for the mosaic alone. 7 8 LARNAKA this month larnaka this month SEPTEMBER 2015 Phaneromeni Church: On the way to the Airport there is the underground chapel of Ayia Phaneromeni. mosque in her honour. The place is considered to be fourth holiest in the Moslem world. It is a rock cavern with the two chambers. The structure suggests that it was a pagan tomb once, possibly dating back to Phoenician times. The place is credited with various magical properties: thus, those who suffer from headaches or other diseases walk three times round it and leave a piece of clothing or a tuft of their hair. It is visited by girls, whose lovers are overseas, who come here to pray for their safety. The Larnaka Salt Lake is near Larnaka International Airport. It fills up with water during the winter and is visited by migratory birds, mainly flamingoes that stay here from November until the end of March. The Larnaka Medieval Castle was erected by the Turks in 1625. This fort is now a museum and its inner courtyard is used as a an open air garden-theatre during the summer months, by kind permission of the Director of Antiquities. The Larnaka District Museum houses a rich collection of antiquities from Larnaka and its surrounding district. The Old Aqueduct, known as “Kamares”, stands outside the town on the way to Lemesos. It was built in Roman style in 1745 to carry water from a source about 6 miles south of Larnaka into the town. Larnaka Palm Trees Promenade: One of Larnaka’s most distinctive features is the seaside promenade lined with tall palm trees. It is a popular meeting and walking place bordered by tavernas a sandy beach, the Medieval Castle and the Marina. The Pierides Marfin Laiki Bank Museum contains a unique archaeological, medieval, post-Byzantine and Cypriot fork art collections gathered by five consecutive generations of the family. It also exhibits an old arsenal and a rich collection of old chartography of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. Marina: The Largest Marina in Cyprus, located in “Phinikoudes”. Walking on the Marina Pier is a social activity of the locals. Municipal Art Gallery & City Museum & Archives. This Museum is now open at the five old customs stores of NeoGothic architecture which were handed to the Larnaka Municipality by the Cyprus Government. This dates back to the early years of British rule in the late 19th century. Discovered in 1934, this significant site revealed numerous stone foundations of bee-hive shaped houses, usually circular. The houses themselves would have been of mud brick and the ancient inhabitants of Choirokoitia buried their dead under the floors of their dwellings. As many as 26 adult and infant skeletons have been discovered beneath 8 superimposed floors in one of the houses. The Bust of Zeno stands at Europe’s Square in Phinikoudes Avenue. Zeno was born in Kition (ancient Larnaka), in 326 B.C. After studying philosophy in Athens he founded the famous Stoic school of Philosophy. Ancient Kition: The earliest architectural remains date back to the 13th century B.C. In about 1200 BC the area was rebuilt by Archaean Greeks. The remains of the Cyclopean Walls, made of giant blocks and the complex of the five temples are of interest. 8 june 2015 The Hala Sultan Tekke lies on the banks of the Salt Lake. Within the precincts of this Tekke is the tomb of Umm Haram, said to be the foster mother of Mohammed. According to Moslem tradition Umm Haram died on this spot in 647 A.D. while accompanying the Arab invaders. She was buried here and later the Ottomans built the present Choirokoitia: It is the oldest site that one may visit in Cyprus and its dates back to 7000 B.C. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Stavrovouni Monastery, about 15 miles from Larnaka, stands on the peak of a striking lone mountain, over which St. Helena, the finder of the cross of Jesus, saw a strange light gleam. Taking it as a sign from heaven, she founded the monastery and left a piece of the Cross enshrined there. 9 9 10 larnaka this month LARNAKA The traditional Village of Lefkara can be reached after a pleasant drive through the hills. It is renowned worldwide for its lace which is included in the UNESCO World list of intangible Heritage. The villages of Orini are in a mountainous area which is studded with beautiful traditional architecture and old churches. A visit to this area, which offers breath-taking scenery is a must for the tourist as it is unspoilt and untouched by tourist development. The most interesting villages are Tochni, Skarinou, Vavatsinia, Ayioi Vavatsinias, Ora, Odou, Kato Drys and Vavla. Zygi Village Zygi has started developing in a rapid mode during the recent years as a coastal area. The deep blue sea, the fresh breeze as well as the beautiful natural environment of the village provide a peaceful getaway. Several apartments and cottages have been built, new roads have been constructed and the services and infrastructure projects have expanded so as to serve both the permanent inhabitants as well as visitors. Today Zygi is the best known fishing village in Cyprus. The Venetian Castle of Pyla at the centre of the village and next to the old church of Archangel Michael. Pyla is the only mixed village in Cyprus, where Greek and Turkish Cypriots have lived peacefully together for many years. What to see & do Tower of Regena, 17km west of Larnaka is the Venetian observation castle near Pervolia village. The castle stands on a hill overlooking the beach and the surrounding area and was used by the Venetians and Cypriots for observing the coasts to inform the people of the approach of pirates and other invadors. From Pervolia castle they used to make signals of fire and smoke to Pyla Castle informing them of the coming danger. - Fishing Reserve: was completed in 2011 and is the jewel of the village. Highly recommended for strolls and to see many professional fishermen at work as well as amateur anglers. The old chapel of prophet Elias is on the top of the highest hill of Voroklini village. The visitor may have a breathtaking view of the whole Larnaka town, Voroklini village and the Larnaka Bay. 10 SEPTEMBER 2015 this month - Fishtaverns: since Zygi is Cyprus’s most famous fishing village, there are plenty of fish restaurants that offer a wide variety of fresh seafood. - The Community Park of Zygi: includes a playground for children, a kiosk, verdant areas and a volleyball field. - Heroes Monument: a marble plaque with an engraved inscription in honour of the hero Georgios Koumparis and a new park which was created in the honor of the 13 heroes of the Mari explosion. For more information about Zygi: http://www.zygi.com/en/ 11 LARNAKA SEPTEMBER 2015 this month Franciscan Convent of Terra Santa Cyprus potato salad This is the church of the Latin community in Larnaka. Franciscan monk Callixte Martel founded the church and the convent in 1596 mainly for hosting Latin pilgrims to the Holy Land. In 1724 another bigger church and convent replaced the first, which were demolished again in 1842 to be replaced by the present church structures. The convent is also known as Santa Maria delle Grazie and its Latin style is one of the best in Cyprus with Renaissance and baroque characteristics. It is on Apostole Mathieu Street, at a short distance from Chrysopolitissa church. The Terra Santa church and its catholic nuns of Italian origin have a long tradition of philanthropic services to the community of the town. They are now running a home for the elder built at the place of the 19th century convent in 1970.
