Members,
Another month gone by
and it is starting to look
like we will have the
mildest Hurricane
season in years, the
boats are being launched
again, so most people
seem to agree with that
assumption! The ...

Confessions of a would-be Captain
Nemo:
I remember when the only time you wore
deck shoes was when you left the boat to
go to the bar. Even when I was learning to
sail in the English Channel in winter, you
were looked on as a wimp if you wore
anything on your feet. An unwritten rule
said that wearing shoes on deck would
damage the teak and this snobbish
etiquette later extended to fiberglass
boats. How you can damage a fiberglass
deck by wearing shoes beats me. In fact

Hello SMYC Members……..
I’ve finally found myself in Malta, and am
delighted to make this my home. For this
history boff, the 7000 years of civilization,
the allure of the Knights of Malta, the
grand architecture, fortifications and
abundant culture, I am truly in my
element!
As can only be expected, I have joined
the Royal Malta Yacht Club—and have
been volunteering for races and regattas.
The most recent being the 33rd edition of
the Rolex Middle Sea Race. (Which took
place this past week, starting 19 October
2013) ..

On October 5th Neil organized fun racing for Lasers. There were 5 lasers and 1 RS out
on the water. The kids enjoyed the afternoon very much. It was great to see so many
youth sailors out on the water for this casual event. We look forward to more greatly
attended events this year.
We also had a great turn out for the Halloween sail. We had 6 Optimists out on the
water and a total of 8 kids and two teenage volunteers. It was a great night with lots of
candy! The kids really enjoyed it and some said "best Halloween ever".
We look forward to having more fun events!
Islands International Challenge held at the Seawanhaka
Corinthian Yacht Club, New York.
Written by Robin Philip-Norton
I wanted to give you and update from the
islands challenge. We (Sint Maarten)
came in second by 1 point. The wind was
light and we had no sailing on the first
day at all. The second day we went out
late and got in one round robin of which
we were 2 and 2. The third day the wind
started great. we got in a round robin for
which we were 4-0 and then unfortunately
the wind just died as we had really come
into our own. ...next time.

The very first edition of the Ladies Lunch,
was a great success!
On Tuesday 29th of October over 20
ladies appeared at the St. Maarten Yacht

While enjoying a nice beverage and great
food, new business- and personal
relationships have been formed.
A great thank you will go to Brian for his
contribution to this event. We are proud
that there was a good turn up, and we
hope to be able to welcome you all at the
next edition again!
Keep an eye on the Weekly Updates- an

Blustery final day for St Maarten Day Regatta
A break in the feisty weather of the last few days provided near-perfect conditions at the
start of the final day of the Sint Maarten Day Regatta organised by the Sint Maarten
Yacht Club. By the last race, the breeze had increased to a healthy 20 knots providing
excitement and challenge for the 15 boats competing.
