Getting Around Long Island The Hyatt Regency Long Island is located on Motor Parkway: The Long Island Motor Parkway also known as the Vanderbilt Parkway and Motor Parkway, was the first roadway designed for automobile use only and part of the courses for the 1908 to 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race. Felice Nazzaro in his #8 F.I.A.T. sped past the only railroad grade crossing on the course on Jericho Turnpike in Mineola What’s to do? Manhattan (simply, “The City” to LI’ers) is less than an hour West of the Hotel. Its attractions need no explanation. Likewise, what Long Islanders call “Out East” and what the rest of the world calls “The Hamptons” is one hour away East of the hotel. But really, much of what you can find Out East or in The City can be had right within a short drive of the hotel. The following are 60 minutes or LESS round trip from the Hotel (See “Other Information” Below for more details) World class BEACHES, like Jones Beach, or quiet North Shore beaches as at Stony Brook. SHOPPING is a Long Island pastime, and there are stores ranging from the bargains at Tanger Outlets…to Shopping Malls…to the very upscale Americana in Manhasset. Other Attractions: Museums The Cradle of Aviation Museum is a must see. Long Island Children’s Museum The Old Bethpage Village Restoration Amusement Parks Adventureland Petting zoos White Post Farms Oh…and a Raceway Riverhead Raceway Riverhead Raceway is one of the oldest stock car race tracks in the country, having been built in 1949. It is a one-quarter mile asphalt, high-banked oval which includes a Figure 8 course. FOOD: Americans like to eat. Long Islander’s like to eat. There’s a reason they made those 500 seats bigger for the US market. When in the Greater NY area, there are three major food groups you must try, as they are better than anywhere else in the world (never mind the USA): PIZZA CHINESE and Bagels Trust us. Causal and fancy meals are often found in Gold Coast towns of Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor & Northport. The North Shore of Long Island, from Great Neck to Huntington, is called the Gold Coast. Starting at about the turn of the century and through the 1930's, the North Shore was a virtual Who's Who of High Society. From the Astors to the Vanderbilts, this was THE place to be for some of the most notable Americans. Speaking of which, a Gold Coast mansion is the location for our Saturday Concours Westbury House mansion at Old Westbury Gardens Old Westbury Gardens is the former estate of John Shaffer Phipps, heir to a U.S. Steel fortune. The mansion was completed in 1906 and contains 23 rooms. The grounds cover 160 acres. Scenes of the driveway were used in the 1970 film Love Story to depict the entrance to the home of Ryan O'Neal's character. Other movies filmed on the grounds include North by Northwest, The Age of Innocence, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Wolf, Hitch, Cruel Intentions, 8MM, Bernard and Doris, American Gangster. Scenes from the television series, Royal Pains and Gossip Girl also used the location in filming. 4 Events: Thursday, July 7/18-2013 • Registration • Activity: Run Out East - About 175 miles, round trip Approximately up to 5 hours One of the most renowned attractions on Long Island has been the vast expanse of vineyards, simply known as Long Island Wine Country. A stop at Pindar or other Vineyards for a wine tasting? Don’t over do it…. …We still have lots of driving to do. At this point, you can turn around and head back to the hotel. You’ve had a nice 75 mile round trip. Want to explore further? Keep moving east. You will eventually hit a ferry that will take you to Shelter Island. It is only about12 miles from the wine country. The 50 or so miles back to the hotel can be punctuated with stops to check out the shops and beaches……or you can make a bee line back via route 27 and the Long Island Expressway. Long Island itself is not bad, but getting past NYC is the part that some may find daunting. This can be dealt with. Keep in mind you need not drive through Manhattan at all (unless you want to!) You can generally avoid heavy traffic by avoiding rush hours: For the New York City area it begins in the morning around 5:00AM and runs until around 9:00AM. The afternoon rush hour starts around 2:00PM and can run until 8:00PM. With a little planning, you can work around these times. If you don’t, the worst case scenario is you delay your leaving or arrival. Obviously, commuters deal with such traffic every day. A one-time trip in & out, vs. the daily commute New Yorkers deal with, is bearable for most anyone. http://wikitravel.org/en/New_York_(city) Toll information (as of 2/1/13): http://www.mta.info/bandt/ http://www.panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/goethals-bridge.html By way of example: If one takes the Belt Parkway from points west and south, you first take either the Goethals or the Outerbridge Crossing through Staten Island. The tolls are $13.00 to NY and free return trip for Goethals and Outerbridge. One then crosses the Verrazano Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. There is no toll to the LI area. The return trip is $13.00 per car and there is an extra charge per axle for trucks and trailers. Thus, the total tolls for a car to get to and from LI and the NY via this route area is currently $26.00. The Verrazano Narrows bridge is named for the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1964. It is still the longest bridge span in the Americas. Another way to get to Long Island from points West and North would be the George Washington Bridge (“The GW”). Routes 80 and 95 are the two main routes flowing into the bridge. The toll to the LI area is $13.00 per car and there is an extra charge per axle for trucks and trailers. No Toll return trip. Once you cross the GW, you then cross one more bridge, the Throgs Neck or Whitestone (they both get you to LI). Toll is $6.50 each way. and there is an extra charge per axle for trucks and trailers. Thus, the total tolls for a car to get to and from LI and the NY via this route area is also currently $26.00. Opened in 1931, the George Washington Bridge has the greatest vehicular capacity of any bridge in the world, carrying approximately 106 million vehicles per year, making it the world’s busiest motor vehicle bridge. Driving Distances Charlottesville VA 392 mi, 7 hours Washington DC 275 mi, 5 hours Philadelphia, PA 146 mi, 3 hours Youngstown, OH 445 mi, 7 hours Montreal, Canada 405 mi, 7 hours Buffalo, NY 443 mi, 7 hours 32 Asheville, NC 737 mi, 12 hours Once here, Long Island is, well, long. It has three main highways traversing its length. Northern State Parkway, Southern State Parkway, and down the middle, the Long Island Expressway. Easy. But take along a GPS… just in case. You Need Not Drive Through New York City at all to get to FFO 2103! Read on. FERRY Those who wish to avoid NYC altogether can take the Bridgeport Port Jefferson Ferry. It takes cars, trailers and pedestrians. Board in Bridgeport, CT, then cross the Long Island Sound and arrive in Port Jefferson, Long Island. From Port Jefferson to the hotel is about 14 miles… little to no traffic. Rate are Auto & Unlimited Passengers $71 each way. http://www.88844ferry.com/Rates.aspx There is also a ferry from New London Ct. to Orient Point Long Island https://www.longislandferry.com/default.aspx 2 Ferry Street, New London, CT 06320 (860) 443-5281 6.
